This seminar will be led by our other friends at Socialbees, a company that specializes in helping businesses create and market using social media like Facebook. Publisher/Editor Scott Schaefer has taught in seminars for Highline College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) with these folks, and he can attest to their knowledge, wisdom and zeal about social media.

The two part “Taking Your Photography to the Next Level” workshop happens on July 23 & July 30.

According to the course description, you’ll:

Capture wonderful images and get creative with the world around you. Join Burien’s own Michael Brunk in learning the basics of photography. This two-part photography seminar is intended for beginning photographers. Session 1 will cover the basic types of cameras and how they work, techniques for composing photos and the use of light, both natural and flash. Session 2 will consist of a guided photo-walk in Seahurst Park where you’ll be able to put your new knowledge to work. Pre-requisite: digital camera and enthusiasm for photography and improving your results.

Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development (SEED) is hosting a “City Light Community Solar Q&A” workshop from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, July 9^th, at the Burien Community Center to discuss a community-based solar energy project involving solar picnic shelters.

This is a free, family-friendly event, and refreshments will be provided.

“Come learn how you can be a part of a Community Solar project!” reads a website, which adds:

Seattle City Light is launching an innovative community-based solar energy project at Jefferson Park. Up to 500 customers will be able to enroll in the first project and receive bill credits for the electricity produced by a group of solar picnic shelters. These solar shelters will generate clean, renewable electricity while providing a place for community gatherings.

This workshop will provide a brief overview of the project, Q&A and enrollment details. Refreshments provided! Families welcome!

Burien’s Environmental Science Center will be holding a FREE workshop from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12th called ‘Natural Yard Care,’ which will teach natural and chemical-free ways to care for your yard.

“In this workshop you will learn natural alternatives to managing vegetation on your property,” reads an email. “You will learn how to fertilize and deal with pests without using harmful chemicals. This workshop will also focus on how to incorporate more native plants that use less water, how to attract more wildlife, and how to improve soil and water health, and the overall health of the Puget Sound. Join us as we partner with the Garden Hotline, managed by Seattle Tilth.”

PREVIOUSLY: If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to design and build your own rain garden, you’re in luck – there will be a workshop from 6pm – 8pm on Tuesday, March 15th at the Shorewood Room of the Burien Community Center.

At this workshop, you will:

Learn how to design and build a rain garden. Rain gardens function like a native forest to absorb polluted runoff in a cost-effective, low-maintenance, and beautiful way. They reduce flood damage, erosion, mold problems, and increase property values. Whether you have a green thumb or a brown thumb, there are free resources available:

All classes are from  6-8pm on weeknights. At the workshop, you’ll receive a rain garden manual and additional materials. Stewardship Partners is also looking for six to eight homeowners who would like rain gardens installed in their neighborhood.
