Bet on local women’s causes, literally, with Cards for a Cause on Saturday, May 14 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Normandy Park Cove.

Cards for a Cause is a charity casino night and silent auction hosted by Soroptimist International of Seattle South. Proceeds will benefit Highline Community College Women’s Programs and Hospitality House Women’s Shelter.

Participants can play blackjack for fantastic baskets and prizes donated by local businesses and Soroptimist members. The more play money a participant wins the more raffle tickets the participant receives or a chance at prizes.

There will be a Texas Hold’em Tournament at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. with two semi-final tables. All eight players at the Grand Final table will get prizes.

First place is a trip for two to see the LA Lakers in Los Angeles, including airfare and hotel room.

Players will also enjoy scrumptious food donated by the Mark Restaurant, a no-host full bar and music.

Space is limited, so preregistration is encouraged. The poker tournament fee is $40 with preregistration and $50 on the day of the tournament; both provide a $5,000 value in poker chips. General admission is $25 with preregistration and $35 on the day of the event; both provide a $2,500 value in poker chips.

Preregistration for the Texas Hold’em tournament is recommended by contacting Patti Gifford at 206-227-4848 or pattigifford2@gmail.com, or going online to SoroptimistSeattleSouth.com.

The Soroptimists’ tagline is ”Soroptimist means ‘Best for Women.’ Soroptimists are women at their best helping other women to be their best.” The group is a volunteer service organization comprised primarily of women in business, management and the professions.

Normandy Park Cove is located at 1500 S.W. Shorebrook Dr. in Normandy Park.

For more information, call Patti Gifford at 206-227-4848.

Elderly women are at risk when driving at night – from Police.

Many older women must realize personal risks when stopped by police. Why? We are not schooled in avoiding “suspicious” behavior.

Did you know that the following personal idiosyncrasies can and are labeled drug behaviors:

Fast speech (when nervous)

Flushing ( when humiliated)

Red eyes (if they provoke tears)

Having ANY unmarked medication on your person or in your car, (aspirin, Zantac, tylenol, etc.)?

Misinterpreting questions (hard of hearing)

And finally being too nervous to keep up with their fast, curt directions

An experience involving using brights after turning from a side street to HWY 99 ended in a 4-hour interrogation. Handcuffed and driven by a lone man for a long distance in the dark, left a terrified, violated, helpless (handcuffed) woman. Police report stated “polite and cooperative” responses. All charges were dropped. Except a $200.00 bill for having the car towed.

Unable to sleep, refusal to drive at night and panic around police cars has lingered since the event August 23. It will not resolve. Why?

How will you respond when you now know their report will exaggerate your every word, gesture and mistake? Many mistakes were made in naive belief that the police were experienced enough to differentiate simple error from drug-induced responses. How would I respond again if stopped – when panic is felt just recalling the incident? Think about this and talk to all who may offer you some police savvy advice for avoiding this same experience.

Any thoughts for the rest of women at risk?

- Ruth Maloney

The King County Prosecutors Office is charging Jennings with the crime of “malicious harassment,” which is considered a hate crime.

Jennings is accused of calling two Somali women “suicide bombers,” and slamming a car door on one of them.

She will be arraigned on Nov. 2nd.

According to KING’s report:

“It was humiliating,” says Imaan, one of the women who says she was attacked.

Imaan and her aunt Maryon, who are Somali, were buying gas at the Arco station at 154th and International Boulevard when Imaan says Jennings walked up to them and called them a terrorist.

“She was saying you’re a suicide bomber and you don’t know how to pump gas. You need to go back to your own country!” says Imaan.

On behalf of all of us at Hospitality House Shelter in Burien, thank you for supporting our Walk for the Women fundraiser on your blog (read our coverage here). The web allows us to reach so many more people than in the past and judging by the numbers of new supporters we met last Saturday, it is a valuable medium.

Our work is only possible through the generous donations of groups and individuals in our community. Each year we take about 80 women living on friend’s couches, in their cars or on our streets into our House for a fresh start and a much needed second chance. Through individual attention by our case managers, each women begins to work through her program of healing and rebuilding. Over 65% of the women that enter Hospitality House move into stable housing and a new life.

Thank you for your continued support and the support of your readers.

Sincerely-
Tammie Schacher
