Here’s the latest advisory, issued at 8:55 p.m. Friday night (Jan. 20):

…WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 10 AM PST SATURDAY…

* SOME AFFECTED LOCATIONS…EVERETT…SEATTLE…TACOMA…OLYMPIA.

* TIMING…SOUTH WINDS WILL INCREASE LATE TONIGHT AS A STRONG TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE MOVES ACROSS THE AREA.

* WIND…SOUTH WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH.

* IMPACTS…GUSTY WINDS MAY SNAP TREE BRANCHES AND CAUSE LOCAL POWER OUTAGES. AREAS WITH TREE AND LIMB DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE ICE STORM MAY SEE NUMEROUS ADDITIONAL FALLING LIMBS. BEWARE SNAGS WHICH ARE LIKELY TO FALL WHEN THE WIND INCREASES OVERNIGHT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 39 MPH OR GUSTS OF 45 TO 57 MPH ARE LIKELY.

Oh, and did we forget to mention that they also issued a ‘Flood Advisory,’ in effect until Saturday afternoon:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED AN URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR RAIN AND MELTING SNOW IN…

CLALLAM COUNTY…
ISLAND COUNTY…
JEFFERSON COUNTY…
SAN JUAN COUNTY…
GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY…

* UNTIL 330 PM PST SATURDAY.

* AT 331 PM PST RAIN GAGE REPORTS AND NWS DOPPLER RADAR SHOWED MODERATE RAIN OVER MOST OF THE ADVISORY AREA. AMOUNTS RANGE FROM OVER AN INCH IN THE SOUTHWEST WHERE THE RAIN BEGAN SEVERAL HOURS AGO TO A FEW HUNDREDTHS OR ZERO TO THE NORTH WHERE THE RAIN IS JUST GETTING STARTED.

LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN WITH OCCASIONALLY HEAVY RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD THE ENTIRE AREA TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY. TOGETHER WITH MELTING SNOW OVER THE LOWLANDS…EXPECT PONDING OF WATER ON ROADS AND IN NEIGHBORHOODS. STORMWATER WILL POOL IN THE SNOW COVER BEFORE EVENTUALLY MELTING AND RUNNING OFF. IN ADDITION…THE SNOW COVER AND ICE COULD BE BLOCKING STORM DRAINS AND/OR CULVERTS WHICH COULD ALSO RESULT IN EXCESSIVE PONDING OF WATER OR CAUSE SMALL STREAM TO OVERFLOW THEIR BANKS.

RUNOFF FROM THE RAIN AND MELTING SNOW WILL INCREASE THE POSSIBILITY OF LANDSLIDES AND DEBRIS FLOWS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

CLEARING NEARBY STORM DRAINS COULD HELP LESSEN THE PONDING OF WATER.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF FLOOD WATERS. ONLY A FEW INCHES OF RAPIDLY FLOWING WATER CAN QUICKLY CARRY AWAY YOUR VEHICLE.

And here’s the latest 7-day forecast:

UPDATE 12/27/11: Seattle City Light is reporting that power has been restored to all Customers affected by Christmas Day’s windstorm by 2:30 a.m. Monday (Dec. 26).

Seattle City Light experienced multiple outages throughout its service territory, starting about 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25, when a cold front moved through the area causing wind gusts of 50 mph. At the peak of the windstorm approximately 18,000 customers were without power.

PREVIOUSLY: BTB Reader Carrie Baggaley Rasmussen texted us these pics, taken by her husband Justin, of a large tree down across SW 152nd near the Ruth Dykeman Center, felled by a Christmas Day storm, which also caused scattered power outages in the Burien area.

As you can see in the foreground, a car was also damaged by a fallen telephone pole.

Seattle City Light says that more than 7,000 homes and businesses were affected by the storm, with some of the largest outages in the SeaTac and Burien area – here’s a map showing the outages:

“Crews are responding to identify the exact locations and causes of the outages and then will make repairs,” City Light said in a statement.

Customers can get outage information online at www.seattle.gov/light/sysstat.

If you have any photos of other storm damage, please email us and we’ll try to post them (in-between eating and visiting with family…).

The National Weather Service released a ‘Wind Advisory‘ Monday (Nov. 21), warning residents of south winds from 20 – 30 mph with gusts between 45 – 57 mph through Noon Tuesday.

So batten down your blue tarps Burien, and make sure you’re ready, as “winds tonight through Tuesday morning could topple small trees or cause local power outages,” according to the weather peeps.

According to noted UW Meteorologist Cliff Mass:

A VERY serious storm is going to hit the Northwest during the next two days–one that will cause flooding and coastal wind damage.

And the urban areas are doing to experience a deluge.

Folks, this will be a major event.

Here’s the Wind Advisory, as of 4:54 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21:

… Wind Advisory remains in effect until noon PST Tuesday…

* some affected locations… Stanwood… Everett… Seattle… Renton… Bellevue… Bremerton… and Tacoma.

* Wind… increasing from the south at 20 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph overnight… then decreasing Tuesday morning.

* Timing… the strongest winds are expected to occur between 10 PM tonight and 7 am PST Tuesday.

* Impacts… winds this strong can topple trees and cause local power outages.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph or gusts of 45 to 57 mph are likely. Winds this strong can snap small tree branches… topple small or shallow rooted trees… and cause local power outages.

And if that’s not enough, a Flood Watch was also issued for Tuesday morning through Wednesday night:

… Flood Watch in effect from Tuesday morning through late Wednesday night…

The National Weather Service in Seattle has expanded the

* Flood Watch to include a portion of western Washington… including the following counties… King… Lewis… Pierce… Snohomish… Thurston.

* From Tuesday morning through late Wednesday night

* rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches tonight and Tuesday as the snow level rises to around 6000 feet… then another 1 to 3 inches of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday as the snow level gradually falls to around 3000 feet.

* Rivers facing the greatest threat of flooding include the Newaukum… Chehalis… Puyallup river near Orting… Snoqualmie… and stillaguamish.

* If flooding does occur… it will probably be relatively minor.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding but flooding is not imminent or occurring. Monitor the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service and be ready to act quickly if flooding is observed or a warning is issued.

And here’s the latest forecast:

Late Afternoon: Rain. High near 49. Breezy, with a south wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Story by Scott Schaefer
Photos by Bob Seaton

On a windy Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 28), an 18-foot motorboat broke away from its mooring buoy off the north side of Burien’s Three Tree Point neighborhood and ended up getting slammed repeatedly against a concrete retaining wall before being rescued.

Nobody was on board at the time, and there were no injuries to humans.

However, the boat didn’t fare so well.

“It got pretty chewed up – both sides were damaged with heavy scarring and scraping from bow to stern,” said Capt. Nick Stivers of Vessel Assist, the company that rescued the boat. “Even the steel anchor roller was busted and bent.”

After breaking off its anchored buoy sometime in the afternoon, the unmanned vessel floated in to shore and came to rest against a concrete paving wall, where wind and waves battered it.

“These kind of rescue jobs are very common,” Stivers added. “It’s very typical, especially during transition periods between summer and fall when the wind comes – people aren’t always ready for when that first blow comes in, and sh*t happens.”

The good news out of all this? The boat never ‘turtled,’ or turned over, which Stivers said is common, and often causes much more damage.

“This particular boat was a Gig Harbor-produced Tiderunner that didn’t ‘turtle’,” Stivers said. “It just filled with water, so when we pulled it away from the scene, we just pumped the water out and towed it to CSR Marine in Des Moines. If it had turtled it would’ve cost a whole heck of a lot more to rescue.”

Stivers said the boat’s owner contacted Boat US, a AAA-style service for boats, and their dispatch center called him and he responded.

The boat apparently came loose after its rope frayed and broke from the mooring buoy. Waves some three to four feet high didn’t help matters.

“Ropes can fray pretty quickly in rough seas,” Stivers said. “Boat owners should be more aware of this.”

The cost to rescue a boat can be pretty high too – Stivers’ minimum day rate starts at $240 per hour, with a 4-hour average rescue time.

Area resident Bob Seaton shared these pics of the boat:

As I was sitting at my computer and watching the trees in the wind Thursday afternoon, I heard an odd noise coming down the street. It was a neighbor’s canvas carport making a desperate run for freedom. I’d seen it cruelly tied to some concrete blocks and forced to endure all of our miserable winter weather with no protection. However, in its unhealthy state and still dragging those awful concrete blocks, it was harassed by traffic and managed to make it onto the shoulder, where it expired.

Soon its owner showed up. With the help of a buddy and showing no respect for the deceased’s body, he proceeded to tear it apart, limb by limb. I managed to get some photos and hope someone can contact the SPCCC and report this horrific abuse.

* Winds… south winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts 60 mph until the early evening hours. Winds easing to 15 to 25 mph after 8 PM and to 10 to 15 mph after midnight.
