They combined a QFC “mega sale,” along with numerous manufacturer’s coupons to get some extremely deep discounts.

Their total bill came to $453.67, which amounted to a total savings of $1,833.33 – an 80% discount!

Rick Jump of the White Center Food bank was there with vans to load the food. Scott Hieronymus, Manager of the Westwood Village QFC, worked with them to close down a lane and check out the massive order. It was a lot of fun and they are looking forward to doing it again.

Be on the lookout in the spring flier for the Burien Community Center for free classes on how to get started couponing. They are looking to share this fun and rewarding hobby with individuals, churches and community services to Cut Out Hunger in our area.

Special thanks to St. Bernadette’s Parish for donating the coupons.

Here are some photos from the big shopping trip:

In an informal ceremony at The Mark Restaurant on Tuesday, Discover Burien’s Debra George passed out checks to two local food banks for the funds raised at this year’s Empty Bowls event.

(L to R) Debra George – Discover Burien, Rick Jump – White Center Food Bank, Mike Werle – Highline Food Bank, Gina Kallman – Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services

The Highline Food Bank and White Center Food Bank split the proceeds down the middle, with each organization receiving a check for $8222.83.

Rick Jump, Executive Director of the White Center Food Bank, said “In this economy, with fewer pounds of donated food, this donation will allow us to purchase more food to support the increase of families that we’re serving.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mike Werle, Director of the Highline Food Bank, explained “Because we buy in bulk, we get a pound of food for around $1.25 so this donation will stretch quite a ways.”

REMINDER: Burien’s annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser is TODAY (Friday, Jan. 28th) at a NEW LOCATION — the Burien Community Center, (14700 6th Ave SW), with both a lunch (11am-2pm) and the dinner session running from 4pm – 8pm.

According to Rick Jump of the White Center Food Bank, the lunch turnout was around 350, including several local dignitaries were seen slurping from the great choices of soups and food.

If you’re going to the 4pm-8pm dinner session, we recommend getting their early, as there were only 1,300 bowls made.

Here are some sneak peek pics showcasing some of the original artisan-crafted pottery that will be available for sale:

For a minimum donation of $15, you can buy your own beautiful, original bowl, locally-made by potters at Moshier Arts Center, then get it filled with a meal of soup, bread, drink and dessert.

And yes, you get to keep the bowl!

This event is a fundraiser for the Highline and White Center Food Banks, and last year it raised over $13,000 for hungry neighbors in need (read our coverage and see our photos from 2010′s event here).

“Moshier potters have teamed up with Discover Burien and Burien Parks and Recreation to host Empty Bowls 2011,” says a statement on the city’s website. “Empty Bowls events can be found around the country raising money to combat hunger in our communities. Potters have donated bowls to be filled with soup at this fun event…all are invited!”

Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, drink and dessert donated by area businesses. Proceeds will go to the Highline Food Bank and White Center Food Bank.

For more info, read our original event posting here, call (206) 988-3700, or visit the city’s website here.

“We will reschedule this very successful event as soon as possible,” said Blog staffer and event organizer Bart Bryan.

The Turkeys N’Diapers Fundraiser supports the very much needed services of the White Center Food Bank and WestSide Baby.

“We will let our readers know as soon as we reschedule our third annual fundraiser,” Bart said. “We look forward to seeing a strong turnout at that time from our Burien and White Center neighbors and hope to make it our best one yet!

“In the meantime, we encourage our readers to make the biggest and most heartfelt direct donations they can muster before Thanksgiving,” Bart said.

The White Center Food Bank makes food available year-round to nearby families in need.

The Food Bank works hand-in-hand with WestSide Baby, a non-profit organization that collects previously-owned items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to South King County families in need.

Please stay tuned for a new date.

The B-Town Blog, along with our sister site The White Center Blog, look forward to seeing as many of our Readers and Neighbors as possible on Saturday, Nov. 20th at the White Center Albertsons for a special Thanksgiving-related food and diaper drive: our 3rd Annual Turkeys N’Diapers Fundraiser!

It’ll run from 10am to 3pm, and all donations will go to the White Center Food Bank (food) and WestSide Baby (diapers & baby stuff).

Albertsons is located at 16th Avenue SW and SW 106th Street in White Center.

We’ll be collecting turkeys and diapers (yes, that’s correct: turkeys and diapers!).

Stuffing and canned vegetables and other Thanksgiving-related food items would be greatly appreciated.

Donations in the form of cash and checks (made out directly to “White Center Food Bank” or “WestSide Baby”) will also be gratefully accepted.

The crew will be lead again this year by the blog’s own Mark Neuman and Bart Bryan, with special appearances by other hard-workin’ local bloggers.

And get this – if you’re a local business who wants to get some free publicity, all while helping out your community – for each business that donates over $100 in either cash or goods, we’ll not only post your name in our stories on this event, we’ll link to your website as well!

The White Center Food Bank will make available the food, as they do year-round, to nearby families in need.

The Food Bank works hand-in-hand with WestSide Baby, a nonprofit organization that collects previously-owned items for children and babies and distributes them free of charge to South King County families in need.

In 2008 WestSide Baby served more than 12,000 children.

This is our third consecutive year doing this fundraiser. Previously, we’ve raised over $1,110 (year #1) and $800 (last year), and we’re hoping to eclipse both this year.

Here’s year-round contact information:
