It’s time to break out your walking shoes again and meet up with your B-Town neighbors for another stroll – Burien’s monthly ‘Walk-n-Talk’ will take place this Sunday, Nov. 6, meeting at 2 p.m. at the top of the grassy knoll in the middle of Town Square; the walk will start at 2:15.

“We’re going to walk the same route as last month, and be able to view the now-installed Eagle sculpture at Eagle Landing Park (see map below),” said Organizer Maureen Hoffmann. “We’ll walk west and then a little north, making a loop through Seahurst, and stopping along the way at the park. For anyone that has heard about Eagle Landing but hasn’t found it yet, this is a great way to pinpoint where it is in this quiet neighborhood. Those that wish to descend the trail and the many metal stairs (257?) are welcome to break off from the group and head down to the beach, while the rest of us wind our way up and around some scenic, neighborhood back roads.”

Here’s a little dab of description of the park from the web:

Eagle Landing Park is a small six-acre park, in a quiet residential neighborhood. It opened on June 15th, 2005, and it is located at the west end of SW 149th Street, where it meets 25th Ave SW, in Burien. The walk from the parking lot to the beach is about a quarter of a mile, dropping 275 feet in elevation. Open 8:00 AM to dusk.

Adding to the impression of untamed wilderness are the screams of the eagles, who have been nesting in a tree in the middle of the park since 1989. The park is home to over fifty species of native plants. Visitors have seen woodpeckers, hawks, raccoons, otters and foxes, and you may see these creatures if you keep your dog on a leash and walk quietly along the trail.

Here’s a map of this Sunday’s planned walk:

Click image to see larger version.

It’s a free event, and is meant to encourage residents to meet up, walk and talk, then eat and drink.

“Hope you got your walking shoes ready!” reads a Facebook post. “…after walking around the lake, remember The Tin Room Bar & Theater is offering some great specials again, so stop by and enjoy some good company, great food and maybe a ‘restorative’ drink or two!”

From one participant from a recent Hash:

“It took about an hour, it was beautiful, a good opportunity to walk & talk and my Venti coffee lasted the whole walk!”

What’s a ‘Hash’ you ask? Well, we’re not talking about the traditional dish here.

According to Wikipedia:

A ‘Hash’ is a non-competitive running/walking, social, drinking event. It got it’s start in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur and has since spread around the World.

If you can’t make this one, note that there will be one more ‘Hash’ before the Burien Brat Trot on Oct. 9th (we’re Sponsors) – Sunday, Sept. 25.

Read (and see pics) from the most recent ‘Hash’ here.

The second Brat Trot ‘Hash’ was held in Olde Burien Sunday, Aug. 28th, and according to Organizer Chuck Tuman:

“The second Hash went off without a hitch yesterday. More folks joined in the fun of exercise and socializing on the Brat Trot route. Once again the group ended up at the Tin Room and enjoyed their food and drink specials!”

The next Hash is set for Sunday, Sept. 11th. If you’d like to participate, just put on your walking shoes and meet at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Building at 10th SW and SW 152nd in Olde Burien.

It’s a free event, and is meant to encourage residents to meet up, walk and talk, then eat and drink.

“That (Sept. 11th) will be such a nice day for folks to get together with folks they do like so much,” Tuman added. ”A day to celebrate our friends and family.”

These “Hashes” are meant to promote the 3rd annual ‘Brat Trot‘ (we’re Sponsors) 5k run and 1.2 mile fundraiser walk, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 9th – click here for early bird registration (expires Aug. 31st so act fast).

“The Burien Brat Trot has quickly become one of South King County’s most fun and festive fall events!” reads the event website. “Beginning at 10:30 am on Sunday, October 9th the band will strike up and begins to play in Olde Burien. All day, event goers can enjoy brats, the beer garden, a german oompah band, booths and of course — the Chicken Dance!”

Sponsored by BTB Advertiser The Tin Room, the Brat Trot is a fundraiser for the Highline Schools Foundation, Multicare + Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Health Center, and Safe Kids of King County – South.

It’s a free event, and is meant to encourage residents to meet up, walk and talk, then eat and drink.

“After you walk the Brat Trot route, remember to stop by Tin Room Bar & Theater for some delicious food & drink specials,” reads a Facebook post.

From one participant in the Hash on the 14th:

“It took about an hour, it was beautiful, a good opportunity to walk & talk and my Venti coffee lasted the whole walk!”

What’s a ‘Hash’ you ask? Well, we’re not talking about the traditional dish here.

According to Wikipedia:

A ‘Hash’ is a non-competitive running/walking, social, drinking event. It got it’s start in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur and has since spread around the World.

If you can’t make this one, note that there will be two more ‘Hashes’ before the Burien Brat Trot on Oct. 9th (we’re Sponsors) – Sept. 11 and Sept. 25.

Read (and see pics) from the most recent ‘Hash’ here.

The Burien Brat Trot was developed in 2009 as a way to gather the community together, Octoberfest style, for an afternoon of exercise followed by a celebration.

In the spirit of community, the Brat Trot also raises critical funds for two local non-profits Safe Kids King County South and Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence. Safe Kids supports injury prevention through education and access by providing needy families with essentials such as car seats and cribs. The Highline Schools Foundation provides community resources to help all Highline Public Schools succeed by supporting classroom innovation, the arts, athletics, college scholarships and many more district programs and needs.

The 5K race begins on 10th widely circling Lake Burien and finishes to cheering crowds on 152nd. In addition there will be a short-course race perfect for kids and adults alike looking for a more leisurely pace and distance.

The first Brat Trot ‘Hash’ took place Sunday morning (Aug. 14th), when participants met up at the corner of 10th and SW 152nd streets in front of the Masonic Hall for a leisurely romp around the Brat Trot course that wound up back at the Tin Room for food and drink specials.

“Danny (House, Tin Room Owner) had some great specials for the participants,” said Chuck Tuman, who sent us the pics below. “Pints of Alaskan Amber were $2.50 and Bloody Mary’s for $3.25. Tin Dog and fries for $7.50, Tin Room Pancakes with fruit and maple syrup for $6.00 (really a dynamite pancake according to the young woman eating it…) and my favorite, Huevos Rancheros with potatoes on the side!”

The Tin Room Bar (a BTB advertiser and Brat Trot sponsor) is sponsoring these fun events leading up to the Brat Trot, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 9th in Olde Burien. According to the event website:

The Burien Brat Trot has quickly become one of South King County’s most fun and festive fall events! Beginning at 10:30 am on Sunday, October 9th the band will strike up and begins to play in Olde Burien. All day, event goers can enjoy brats, the beer garden, a german oompah band, booths and of course — the Chicken Dance! Many of Olde Burien’s quaint restaurants and shops will be open for business with drink and event specials. The Burien Brat Trot was developed in 2009 as a way to gather the community together, Octoberfest style, for an afternoon of exercise followed by a celebration.
The next hashes will kick off at 11am on three more Sundays leading up to the Brat Trot — August 28, September 11 and September 25.

To register to run/walk in the Brat Trot, click here. Cost is just $30 for early registration, which ends Aug. 31st.

The next Moonlight Beach Walks will be from 7:30pm – 9:30pm on Saturday Dec. 4th and Saturday Jan. 1st at Seahurst Park Beach.

Here’s more info from the Environmental Science Center’s website:

Our Moonlight Beach Walks (usually in December and January) get more popular every year. These walks are a unique opportunity to see Seahurst’s beach at low tide and in the dark. When the tide goes out during the day most of the creatures on the beach go with it or burrow under something. But at night they stay on the beach and can be seen with flashlights. Naturalists from several organizations will be on the beach to lead tours and explain what you’re seeing. And to point out things you would probably never notice on your own. Many of the animals are still well concealed even though they aren’t hiding like they do in daylight. Remember that you’re in their house, and tread gently. The goal is to Do No Harm. This is a great opportunity for kids to see the beach in a whole new way. Click on the photo at the right to see a collection of photos from past Beach Walks.

These are unique opportunities to join our naturalists and experience Seahurst’s beach at low tide in the dark. It’s a whole different world out there at night, with lots of things you can’t see during the day. Dress warmly and bring the kids! See our 2010-2011 flyer for more details.

Imagine you’re on the shoreline at a lovely low tide. Rocks that are covered all year lie exposed to view while the sea denizens remain happily cold and wet in the dark.

All around you, people waving flashlights are intently studying the amazing and abundant sea life as local naturalists help you discover the wonders of your Puget Sound shoreline.

BUNDLE UP AGAINST THE WEATHER AND BE SURE TO BRING:

Bright flashlight with good batteries

Wading boots (you’ll be in ankle deep water)

Warm hat & dry gloves

Free and family friendly!
