Burien jazz singer/musician Sandra Locklear wants all our Readers to know that if you’re a parent of a Highline Public Schools student, or perhaps just a concerned community member, you are invited to voice your views on HSD’s Fine Arts programs on Wednesday, March 31st at 7pm at the district’s central office (aka ERAC) located at 15675 Ambaum Blvd. SW in Burien (across from Azteca next to the bowling alley).

The Highline Arts Council is the outcome of the arts advocacy work of district Fine Arts teachers, parents and caring community members last year, who gathered last April at a special Fine Arts Work Study session with the HSD school board.

According to HSD’s Highline e-Highlights:

“The superintendent’s Council on the Arts is gathering input about arts course offerings and related opportunities in our schools. The council is charged with developing a recommendation to the superintendent that outlines a vision for the arts and a slate of programs and offerings for students in grades K through 12; identifies programs that can be offered by the school district and community partners; and identifies resources to support those programs.

Other opportunities to give input will be available at selected arts events. An input session for Spanish-speaking families will be co-sponsored by the Latino Parent Advocacy Group at a time and location to be announced.”

Providing K-12 “comprehensive and sequential” Fine Arts offerings is a part of basic education as defined by Washington State law. It is up to local school district communities to hold their districts accountable in providing these programs. Please attend and bring a friend!

Sandra adds:

“If you are a Highline School District alumni, please come and share your stories on what the arts (music, dance, drama, visual arts) have done for you, or what the arts programs were like in the Highline School District when you were going to school.”

You can also give input via email at arts@hsd401.org and at the council’s social networking site:
