Since it’s Photo Friday here at The B-Town Blog, what better way to continue our exploration of one of our favorite arts than by showcasing an interview done by one Photographer (Francis Zera) with another (Jason Smith)?

Seattle photographer Jason Smith recently opened a show of his work at Burien’s Vino Bello (636 SW 152nd St.). Jason works as a photographic printer, as in, the old-school method of making prints using darkrooms, enlargers, vats of stinky chemicals, and fiber-based archival papers. There’s nothing digital about the work in this show, but that doesn’t make it anachronistic, rather, the prints offer a timeless look at ordinary (and sometimes extraordinary) objects and situations.

Professional Photographer Francis Zera was fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with Jason as he hung the art at Vino Bello, as well as during the show’s opening night, where he took some time to talk about his inspiration for the show, which we now present in this SoundSlideshow:

We’re huge fans of Photography here at The B-Town Blog, and while we are only rarely able to achieve it, we always appreciate it, honor it, and encourage others to experience it.

I mean, have you ever really thought about Photography? How it’s almost a kind of magic that can capture a moment in time and turn it into beautiful art? And how cool it is that in this nascent digital age that more and more magical moments are being captured by more people than ever before?

Nah…neither did we.

But seriously, that’s why we’re promoting a show opening Friday night, Feb. 12th, at Vino Bello, featuring Jason Smith, a Seattle-based photographic printer. This guy’s done tons of work for other artists, much of which has been exhibited internationally, and now it’s his turn to display his own hand-processed and hand-printed true black-and-white images right here in Burien.

Here are the details:

WHEN: Open reception is Friday night, Feb. 12th from 6pm – 9pm.

BTB Advertiser Vino Bello is holding a special Book Signing & Wine Tasting on Friday, Sept. 11th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm with Author Neil Low, who will be signing his new book “Sign of the Dragon.”

Neil Low is a captain with the Seattle Police Department and the agency’s first commander of its new Ethics and Professional Responsibility Section. Other areas he has commanded include: Homicide and Violent Crimes, Internal Affairs, and Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. He is a Vietnam veteran and a cum laude graduate of the University of Washington’s Bothell campus, where he also wrote for the school’s weekly newspaper, The UW Bothell Commons. A Seattle native, he now lives in Everett with his wife and three daughters.

Author Neil Low is a Captain for the Seattle Police Dept.

Here’s a synopsis of “Sign of the Dragon”:

1940 – The eve of WWII. Imperial Japan threatens to conquer Asia and the entire Pacific Theatre. Supplies and support are flowing into the region. Vital to this effort is the city of Seattle. But now, its crucial role in the supply chain is beginning to attract the interest of some shadowy and exotic international forces… Following a tip from his mentor Vic Morrison, young Alan Stewart uses his detective skills to track down Tiger Lee, a sexy American operative on a mission to disrupt the Japanese spy network. Working together, the two set out to eliminate the head of their Japanese rivals: a dangerous samurai whose movements are shrouded in mystery. What begins as a hunt for justice quickly turns into a maelstrom of revenge—and a race against the clock as politics becomes personal and loyalties are tested from every side. Returning to the scene of his first novel, Thick as Thieves, author Neil Low, proves once again that in the shadowy underbelly of a city nothing is as it first appears, and what you don’t know just might hurt you after all….

Here’s a review:

“Here’s the first thing I can tell you about Neil Low’s new novel: There are strong women herein. If you don’t like strong women or stories about them, find another book. The mood of this tale reminds me of the foggy, black and white crime movies of the period before World War II, and that’s not accidental. It’s clear that the author has extensively researched the Seattle of that era and makes that time real to his readers with deft, subtle touches. This story may humor you, and it’s likely to get your juices flowing. But perhaps most importantly, it’s going to make you think, because it has more twists and turns than the catacombs under Chinatown, which Low describes so vividly. And here is something else I can tell you: You will have to wonder if Low’s catacombs are real or if they are stuff of legend and myth. “Ay, there’s the rub,” as someone else who knew a thing or two about telling a good story once wrote.” –Lowen Clausen Author of The River, and First Avenue.

Returning B-Town Blog Advertiser Vino Bello Wine Bar and Wine Shop is celebrating three years in Burien this Saturday, July 11th – owner Michele Smith and her team have planned a special anniversary party and invite all BTB readers to stop by between Noon and 9pm to partake in the festivities!

Vino Bello’s anniversary events include a Wine Tasting with Wind River Cellars Winemaker, Joel Goodwillie.

“From the Columbia River Gorge, Joel brings us his new releases and a serious dose of humor, and we are very excited to have him back in the house,” Michele told us.

Winemaker Joel has a very simple winemaking philosophy – begin with some of the best grapes in Washington State and let them do their own thing.

“It’s similar to raising children,” says Joel. “Hopefully you begin with something healthy and then you provide a healthy, caring environment for both to mature. The only difference I see is wine doesn’t drop French fries between the seats of my car.”

In the Vino Bello tradition, you can’t have a real party without live music. Saturday’s shindig will feature “Son Jack Jr. & Michael Wilde.”

You can catch the NW’s hottest Blues act live at Vino Bello starting at 6pm and playing through 8pm.

Son Jack Jr. is a blues singer, songwriter and guitarist who performs acoustic solo, duo & electric band sets. His live shows have been described as “intoxicating, intense, exciting experiences” and are comprised of mostly original material and a heady mix of classics from a wide range of country blues greats.

But a rollicking third anniversary party is not all that’s happening at Vino Bello – it’s also a wine shop where low production and high quality wines can be found in a wide array of prices from $7 to $150.

“We also take special orders for whatever you need if we don’t carry it at that time,” Smith said. “We provide quality bulk wines for weddings and large parties and offer discounts on all case and mixed case orders. We have gift certificates and four different wine clubs. We also offer Illy Italian espresso to enjoy here or buy the beans to take home. We carry Theo 100% Organic chocolates from Fremont.”

If you’re not into wine, but love beer, Vino Bello carries 16 eclectic brands of brew that you can enjoy in their sophisticated bar/tasting room or outside on the sidewalk patio, where you can watch the world of Burien pass by.

And did you know that Vino Bello also does private parties? They’ll work with you to create the perfect party for any occasion, from private wine tastings to sit down dinners, you’ll experience food, wine pairing and fun that your group will surely remember.

Vino Bello is located at 636 152nd #F, in downtown Burien. Hours are: Tues-Thurs 11-9, Fri-Sat 11-10, with a Tues-Friday Happy Hour from 4-7 where wine is an affordable $6.00 per glass.

So if you like parties, great wine, beer, people and music in a great location, you’ll love this Saturday’s third Birthday Bash at Vino Bello – here are the details:

  • Noon – 9pm: Wine Tasting
  • 4pm – 9pm: Meet the Winemaker

The B-Town Blog is proud to raise a glass to its latest Advertiser, Vino Bello!

You’ve probably seen us list their unique Saturday Wine Tasting Events often, and that’s only because we think they’re great folks with a fantastic business (not to mention a huge selection of outstanding wines).

On July 4th, 2006, Vino Bello – Italian for beautiful wine – opened downtown at 636 SW 152nd Street, making it Burien’s premier wine shop & wine bar.

Featuring an extensive wine-by-the-glass menu and retail selection from around the world, Vino Bello offers something for everyone.

Meet your neighbors at the Saturday wine tasting events that often showcase winemakers from our own backyard – little known, boutique wineries from Walla Walla, Yakima Valley, Chelan County and the Willamette Valley in OR.

And this Thursday night (April 24th), don’t miss a special Beijo Bag & Accessory Party, starting at 5pm. It’s always a great “girls night out” when Diane brings the latest Beijo fashions to Vino Bello.

Michele Smith of Vino Bello

Saturday tastings start at Noon and go to 8pm; live music starts at 5pm, featuring jazz, blues and folk music.

Be sure to come by Vino Bello this Saturday, April 26th, from Noon – 8pm for wine tastings of Ash Hollow Vineyard, which is located just within the western edge of the Walla Walla Valley appellation just south of Highway 12. Having the same 46º N latitude as Bordeaux, it has become as an exceptional source for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah grapes. Because of its northern latitude, Ash Hollow Vineyard enjoys up to two hours more summer sunlight than other wine growing regions. The longer days allow the grapes to fully ripen, and the cool nights provide a higher natural acidity. The vineyard also offers dramatic views of the Walla Walla Valley and Blue Mountains.

Saturday’s Tasting Lineup:

  • 2007 Dry Gewurztraminer: This wonderful dry Gewurztraminer, 100% stainless steel produced, has intense tropical fruit & spicy lemon zest aromatics. Golden lemonade in color, terrific legs, great body, layers of fantastic tropical fruits with just the right amount of spice.
  • 2007 Sauvignon Blanc: Crisp & clean, light & refreshing; the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc waits to share its zesty citric, lush tropical fruits & dried pineapple aromas with you. Hints of starfruit, cut grass, and a complex minerality develop into a somehow lean yet rich, long finish.
  • 2007 Somanna: Somanna, their premier white wine, is a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris which exhibits lovely notes of pear, passion fruit, and pineapple, followed by the subtleness of cut green grass and lemon zest. Unique, Boutique, Crisp & Clean; Enjoy!
  • 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon: This wonderful wine is what the Ash Hollow Estate Vineyards are all about; classic “Old World” style Cabernet Sauvignon! The dark red color teases of the richness to come; aristocratic layers of complexity & a fantastic finish.
  • 2006 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley Estate: The Ash Hollow Estate Syrah is “Old World” in style with a little “New World” attitude. Blackberries, blueberry pie, dark chocolate & cigar box; seamless power & elegance. Get ready to love this 2006 vintage! Wow!
