Lead Paint Deadline Looms

2010 is shaping up to be a busy year for remodeling. Many homeowners who held off on projects for the last year or two are now ready to move forward with their plans. There’s extra incentive to do energy-efficient improvements this year because of a $1500 federal tax credit that will expire at the end of 2010.

All this remodeling activity may be complicated, however, by a new EPA regulation on handling lead paint in pre-1978 homes. The new rules go into effect next week on April 22nd, and require that remodelers who work on projects as small as bathroom remodels and minor siding and window replacement be certified to safely remove lead paint and be registered with the EPA.
