B-Town Blog reporter Bart Bryan called in to the newsroom minutes ago with the following phone report:

“Brian Partridge and Janie Kelly are playing at Advertiser The Barrel Tavern in north Burien tomorrow night, Saturday, February 11, starting at 9.

No cover, but lots of fun.

“They rock the gamut from Lady Gaga to Zeppelin to Fleetwood Mac to Aretha.

“Brian masters the keyboards and provides well-timed backup vocals. The light show is phenomenally 70s and 80s!”

Bart adds “I vouch for ‘em! You won’t be disappointed. Put on your dancing shoes!

“And lead singer Janie with a pitch-perfect voice and just the right touch of showmanship sings leads.

“She knocked them out through two rounds of American Idol tryouts last year in Portland, Oregon. And you many see her go even further sometime soon.

“See you there. The Barrel is located at 11051 1st Avenue South in Burien.”

“Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, which features the songs from the classic family film ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,’” reads a press release. “The memorable score features “The Candy Man”, “Pure Imagination”, “Oompa Loompa” and ”I Want it Now” by Academy® and Grammy® award winners Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, neatly fitted into a new script adapted under the auspices of the Dahl Estate. With a flexible cast size, featuring roles for children and a tour-de-force role in the title character.”

Well now our friend Manuela’s gone and created ‘Bavaria On Acid,’ her own one-woman show, which she’ll perform this Thursday night, June 16th, from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. at the Can Can, which is located at 94 Pike Street in the Pike Place Market (206-652-0832).

Manuela describes her show as:

The Ultimate Oktoberfest Training Program is here!!!

Well Bottoms up!

Raise your glass and three cheers for “Bavaria on Acid”!

Manuela Horn is on a Highway to Yodelaehihuuu as the hottest Bavarian Ambassador you have ever seen.

This funny, foxy lady has her own yodelishes interpretation of some unforgettable Top 40 Hits.

Do yourself a favor, get your party hat on and see “Bavaria on Acid”, starring the one and only “yodeling dominatrix”!

Expect the Unexpected!

Tickets are $5-$10, and can be purchased online here – but order quickly, as there are only 200 seats available at this club.

If you’re not familiar with this tall, Germanic, comedic bombshell, here are some videos of her in action, including our own 2009 interview:

Here’s more info:

There has always been a kinship between the aerodynamic designs of fast aircraft and fast automobiles.	These characteristics often grow from one industry to the other.	Exotic machines of the ground and sky also share a common beauty of design as well.

On the afternoon of May 14, 2011 these shared qualities will be on display at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field.

The Event…
This event will demonstrate the aerodynamic similarities between exotic cars and aircraft. Because of the uniqueness of the automobiles displayed, the event should draw a substantial attendance.

The Cause…
Too often dogs and cats are abandoned by their owners. Animal shelters and pet rescue groups work tirelessly to find hope and homes for these creatures. Many are volunteers who are working out of the kindness of their hearts. Representatives from Homeward Pet Rescue, Shelter, and Adoption and Animal Aid & Rescue Foundationcwill be on site to give out information and to accept donations.

Aviation High School (AHS) is the only college preparatory aviation- themed high school in the North- west. It is our goal to become the premier school of choice for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in the Pacific Northwest.

Although Highline Public Schools is the home of this unique learning community, students throughout the Puget Sound region may apply. This year about 65 percent were local students and the rest com- muted from surrounding districts, some as far away as Tacoma, Everett, and Bremerton. Many as- pire to become scientists, engi- neers, astronauts, pilots, aviation technicians, and CEOs in aviation/ aerospace fields. Many are drawn by the school’s focus on math, sci- ence and technology.

Mission
To prepare all students for college, career and citizenship through a personalized, rigorous and relevant learning experience that is facili- tated in the context of aviation and aerospace.

Senior Project Rationale
…to provide students an opportunity to test themselves—to see for themselves as well as to demonstrate and communicate to others that they can apply their knowl- edge and skills in important and practical situations to solve problems and achieve goals.

What makes an exotic car?
First , an “Exotic” is not generally in the same category as “mainstream” automobiles like Kia, Honda, or GM, etc. An exotic car is not a hot rod, typically seen at most car shows. Some brands which are labeled exotics are (but not limited to) Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Bentley, Tesla, BMW M-Series, Audi R8, and Lotus. This group can also include rare brands such as Alfa Romeo. The far majority of exotic cars are European, however there some American and Japanese cars that fit the description as well.	These automobiles are all “drivable art”.

About Me…..
“My name is Alex Bergler and I am in my senior year at Aviation High School. For my senior project I have planned an event that will combine three of my passions, aircraft, exotic cars, and animals.	Since I was just a toddler I have always loved aircraft. Most of my childhood memories are filled with attending air shows and spending a lot of time at the Museum of Flight, I joke that the Museum became my second home.	My plans and dreams have always involved flight. As I started high school I began to seriously pursue my dreams of flight by starting flight lessons at Boeing Field. As I studied aerodynamics and design I soon became enamored with another great pas- sion and beauty , exotic automobiles. Now the passing sound of a Ferrari evokes the same excitement and awe as that of a F/A-18 takeoff. From my earliest memories ani- mals have always been an important part of my life. My family and I have always been very animal friendly. So when I was selecting an endeavor to pursue for a senior pro- ject it really made sense to combine my passions into something which will positively contribute to my community .”

REMINDER: The Highline Classic Jazz Festival is this Saturday, Feb. 19th, with two shows at Burien’s Performing Arts Center – a matinee at 2pm and an evening show at 7pm.

Tickets are $20 for each show, or $35 to see both, and FREE for youth 18 and under. Buy tickets online here, or buy them in person at Burien Press (423 SW 152nd Street) or Allusia (921 SW 152nd Street) or one hour before showtime at the door on Saturday.

Although there are a lot of fine music festivals in the Puget Sound area, the only one that celebrates the first half century of Jazz in ALL its forms is the Highline Classic Jazz Festival. From its birth in New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century through the wildly popular mid-century Big Band era, America’s unique art form constantly reinvented itself, lending it’s exuberant rhythms and tonality to other musical styles and borrowing from them as well.

Presented by Burien Arts, a non-profit group dedicated to providing access to visual and performing arts in the Burien/Highline area, the Highline Classic Jazz Festival seeks to keep alive the diversity and freedom of expression of that wonderful era by presenting a variety of early Jazz styles in a fun one-day event at a single venue.

This year’s festival includes New Orleans and Chicago style Hot Jazz (aka Dixieland), Gypsy Jazz, Ragtime & Stride Piano, Jump, Swing Standards, and Novelty Tunes from the 20’s and 30’s (check out videos from the artists below).

Here’s more info from the event’s organizers:

Six top jazz performers, including Rebecca Kilgore and the Butch Thompson Trio, will appear at the Highline Classic Jazz Festival on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Two shows, a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m., will feature a mix of early 20th-century jazz styles, from Dixieland and Gypsy to ragtime and swing. The Canote Brothers will emcee both shows at the Highline Performing Arts Center, 401 S. 152nd St., Burien.

The afternoon program will include vocalist Rebecca Kilgore with pianist Dave Frishberg performing favorites from the Great American Songbook, the Gypsy-style quintet Pearl Django and traditional jazz pianist Ray Skjelbred.

The evening show will present the Butch Thompson Trio, best known for ragtime and a long run on “A Prairie Home Companion” radio show, the Chicago and New Orleans Dixieland septet Holotradband and jump and jive artists Casey MacGill & Blue 4 Trio.

Tickets are $20 per show for adults or $35 for both shows. Admission is free to those 18 and under. For $100, individual sponsors receive two all-day passes, preferred seating and other extras. Tickets are available at Burien Press, 423 152nd St. SW, Burien, and Allusia, 921 SW 152nd St., Burien, by calling Burien Arts at 206-244-7808 or at the door. Tickets and more information about the festival and the performers also are available at www.highlineclassicjazz.com.

The third annual festival is organized by Burien Arts, a nonprofit group dedicated to providing access to visual and performing arts in the Burien/Highline area. Several of this year’s acts also performed at the earlier festivals, according to Lance Haslund, festival director who also is a member of Holotradband.

“Even with the economy still in bad shape, we decided to give this another try,” he said. “We have great support from the musicians and think this is a wonderful way for people to hear excellent performers for a very reasonable price.”

The festival is a veritable history lesson in jazz as well as a highly entertaining event suitable for all ages. From its birth in New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century through the wildly popular Big Band era, America’s unique art form has constantly reinvented itself, lending its exuberant rhythms and tonality to other musical styles as well as borrowing from them. Festival organizers hope to keep alive the diversity and freedom of expression of the jazz era with this one-day event at a single venue.

“There are a lot of fine jazz festivals in the area, but this is the only one that celebrates the first half-century of jazz in ALL its forms, from the beginning through swing,” Haslund said.

By offering free admission to teens, Burien Arts hopes to expose young people to jazz musicians who often play in adults-only venues.

The festival lineup includes several longtime performers at Seattle’s clubs and jazz events, such as Pearl Django and Ray Skjelbred, as well as some from out of town. Rebecca Kilgore lives in Portland and Butch Thompson is based in Minneapolis.

“As a group, they have most of the jazz styles covered,” Haslund said. “Most have been performing for decades all over the world. We’re fortunate to bring them together for the festival so people have a chance to sample jazz at its best.”

Here’s the schedule:

Butch Thompson Trio
You may know him from his long run on A Prairie Home Companion. Now discover Butch Thompson as one of the world’s top jazz and ragtime performers, a concert artist who connects easily with his audience as he gives them a personally guided tour of a rich American tradition. With dazzling technique and engaging commentary, Butch establishes a rapport that makes any concert hall seem intimate. Butch Thompson – piano; Matt Weiner – bass; Chris Tyle – drums www.butchthompson.com

Rebecca Kilgore with pianist Dave Frishberg
Rebecca Kilgore is one of America’s leading song stylists who finds particular delight in preserving and interpreting the music of the Great American Songbook. She regularly performs worldwide at jazz festivals, jazz parties, and on jazz cruises. She is a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s ‘Fresh Air’ with Terry Gross, has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and with Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall. www.rebeccakilgore.com www.davefrishberg.net

Pearl Django
Now in their sixteenth year of performing, Pearl Django continues to be one of America’s most respected and busiest Hot Club style groups. Though still strongly influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt, Pearl Django’s repertoire now includes many original compositions. Ryan Hoffman & Troy Chapman – guitar; Michael Gray – violin; David Lange – accordion; Rick Leppanen – bass. www.pearldjango.com

Ray Skjelbred
One of the top Wast Coast traditional jazz pianists, Ray Skjelbred has been a featured piano soloist and band member in concerts and festivals for many years. He usually performs an eclectic mix of early jazz standards, blues, barrelhouse, classic ragtime, unexpected pop tunes and original compositions. www.rayskjelbred.com

Holotradband
This seven-piece band, a staple at Pioneer Square’s New Orleans Creole Restaurant, and led by cornestist Dave Holo, evokes the sounds of New Orleans and Chicago traditional and Dixieland jazz from the 20′s and 30′s. With its hard driving rhythm section and irrepressible horn line, this brash, hot and swinging improvisational group hits the spot. Dave Holo – cornet & vocals; Dave Loomis – trombone & vocals; Bruce Hall – clarinet & saxophone; Alex Guilbert – piano; Jeff Norwood – bass; Mike Dougherty – drums & vocals; Lance Haslund – guitar & vocals. www.holotradband.com

Casey MacGill & Blue 4 Trio
Casey MacGill’s Blue 4 Trio performs music that swings. Nat “King” Cole Trio meets the Mills Brothers. Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Slim Galliard meets Fred Astaire. It is music of many decades and no decade in particular, all happening at the same time, woven into a seamless, beautiful whole. At the core of this group’s sound are the band’s sometimes sweet, sometimes rough-hewn three-part harmony vocals and a piano-ukulele-bass-and-drums rhythm section that swings in a variety of textures. Casey MacGill – piano, ukulele, cornet & vocals; Matt Weiner – bass & vocals; Mike Dougherty – drums & vocals. www.blue4trio.com

The Canote Brothers
We welcome back the fun loving, family friendly Canote Brothers as our musical Emcees. Their finely-crafted music, grounded in a number of vintage styles, sounds both familiar and fresh. Maybe it’s because these identical twins have been singing and cutting up together since they were toddlers that their relaxed performances leave their audiences with aching grin muscles. Greg Canote – violin & vocals; Jere Canote – guitar & vocals. www.canote.com
