The Seattle Times is reporting that a couple from Normandy Park is suing Toyota in federal court, demanding that the company either take back the vehicle they just bought or reimburse them for its loss in value since the automaker’s sudden-acceleration troubles became news.
According to The Times:
The lawsuit alleges that the issues plaguing Toyota violate the state’s Consumer Protection Act and amount to a breach of contract. The lawsuit is a proposed class action and, if certified by a federal judge, could apply to other Toyota owners in Washington with similar issues.

On Monday (Mar. 1st), Seattle Times columnist Jerry Large published a followup article that is basically a reaction to him being confronted by Burien Mayor Joan McGilton, Councilmember Kathy Keene and City Manager Mike Martin over Burien’s desire to annex the remaining portions of White Center.
The encounter came after Large published a column on Feb. 3rd extolling how White Center is “the right fit” for Seattle.
Councilmember Keene then sent us a copy of a letter she sent The Times, where she strongly refuted Large and claimed that Burien would be a better fit for White Center (read Keene’s letter here).
In Large’s latest column, he starts out by saying:
Burien is getting feisty.
The small city is not counting itself out as a home to the northern neighborhoods of North Highline.
So now, “feisty” Burien has struck back, and the columnist has printed our cityfolk’s claims, stating that “Burien knows what it wants” – read his full column here.
We wonder what will happen next in this political opinion-shaping chess match…stay tuned.
The Seattle Times reports that the Coast Guard searched the waters off Burien’s Seahurst Park Friday after receiving a report of an overturned kayak around 5pm.
Two Coast Guard boats on the scene found nothing more than a floating piece of Styrofoam that was the probable cause of the call.
The search was called off around 9pm after nothing else (and thankfully no humans) were found.

According to The Seattle Times, Hollie Beston, 31, of Burien, was arrested along with her ex-husband, Brian Beston, 36, of Kent, for filming themselves raping their 4-year old daughter and sending photos of the abuse to a man in Southern California.
The two were arrested by Seattle Police last week after the FBI learned of the crime from the recipient of the photos, a man facing child-molestation charges in Southern California, said charging documents filed Wednesday in King County Superior Court.
The Times goes to on report that the Bestons have each been charged with:
- First-degree child rape
- First-degree child molestation
- Sexual exploitation of a minor
- Depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct
Both are currently being held at the King County Jail on $500,000 bail each.
Some other amazingly unpleasant facts from this story:
- Police believe the Bestons abused the girl for several months.
- Hollie Beston is also accused of operating the camera and sending the images via a cellphone and the Internet.
- Police apparently searched the Bestons’ homes in Kent and Burien last week and confiscated computers, cameras, flash drives, cellphones and other electronics, court papers said.
The child was taken into custody by state Child Protective Services.
We did our own Google search for “Hollie Beston” and found a profile for her (direct link here), which includes some incredibly ironic statements like:
- “I am a fun loving and caring person.”
- “I have a problem with caring for people too much, which leads to people trying to use me.”
- “It is a lot of fun meeting new people but I am careful because I have a young one to take care of.”
Here’s exact wording from her Google Profile:

I have a problem with caring for people too much, which leads to people trying to use me. I enjoy doing a variety of things and have hopes and dreams that will someday come true. According to The Seattle Times, Burien resident Christopher C. Saunders, 24, who was arrested last Friday by Port of Seattle Police for lasering approaching airplanes near Sea-Tac Airport (a felony), was apparently “playing around” with a green laser light at a party in the 2200 block of South 136th Street on Feb. 22nd.
The Times says that the renter of the house said Saunders first pointed the laser at their horses until he was asked to stop. At least 12 airplanes reported being “lasered” that night, and numerous incidents happened over the following 2-3 weeks.
As the police interviewed the renter, Saunders arrived at the residence and confessed to pointing the beam in multiple directions on the day of the party and that he might have “lasered” a plane.

According to The Seattle Times, Alexander F. Hughes, 27, of Burien, was charged for Monday’s erratic ax attack at Schuck’s Auto Supply in Burien, with a bail proposed at $250,000.
Hughes, who apparently has a history of drug addiction, was charged with one count of second-degree assault and one count of first-degree attempted robbery in King County Superior Court. He is currently being held at the Norm Maleng Justice Center in Kent.
Documents detail Hughes erratic ax attack thusly:
- He went to the store at 5pm and tried to take a generator from a display.
- Upon realizing that the generator was chained down, he exited, then got an ax from his van and returned to the store.
- He swung the ax at a customer (Leonard Lucas), grazing the man’s stomach.
- Leonard Lucas of Burien, the customer, then pushed two people outside to safety who were entering the store.
- Hughes apparently followed them, asking, “You want something?”
- A worker came out, walked up behind Hughes and grabbed the ax out of his hands.
- Lucas then grabbed Hughes and pushed him into the back of an SUV, breaking the glass.
- Lucas pushed Hughes to the ground and punched him until he stopped fighting.
- Cops arrived minutes later, and our eyewitness counted seven patrol cars converging on the scene.
- Both Hughes and Lucas were taken to Highline Medical Center. Neither was seriously injured.
Also, according to the article:
- Hughes’ brother claims that the family had spent that day getting a protection order against him because he told his parents that “someone would die.”
- Also, according to his brother, Hughes had a history of drug addiction and recently sobered up. However, two weeks ago, he started acting “weirder and weirder,” and began taking cough medicine.
- Hughes also told his brother he was going to Washington, DC, because a man there was filled with “great evil,” according to the brother’s statement to police. He didn’t name the man.

The Seattle Times has an interesting article today about a couple in neighboring Des Moines who’ve had their home-based swingers sex parties shut down by the city.
Apparently neighbors complained, cops “investigated” (undercover perhaps? or should we say undercovers…) then the city threatened them with a $513 per day fine for “running a business from their home.”
They called their ongoing sex parties the “Hardwood Cabin” and promoted it online at HardWoodCabin.com, which of course is no longer active (we know you’re going to check it but trust us, there’s nothing there now but an “Account suspended” notice but we’ll wait while you copy and paste the URL in…).
Okay, done checking it now?
We did a little online research and found some cache’d web stuff about the place, including this juicy description:
Description: The HardWood Cabin has a central entry and Kitchen space with multiple areas that consist of semi-private rooms for playing and a main Dungeon Area with 12 foot high ceilings that have 2 suspension points, along with 2 Crosses and spanking pedestals off to the sides. On one end of the facility is a more private room with a Large Bondage Bed and a third Cross. Scattered throughout the cabin you will find beds, and slings for additional places to play. Outside in a private courtyard, is a large pool, along with 3 hot-tubs, and a large overhead pergola structure for in-promtu bondage points among tables, couches and chairs.
Events at the Hardwood Cabin for those that have not attended a party before will find a very relaxed comfortable environment within to play. Basic things are provided (cups, bowls, plates, utensils, etc) along with some food and drinks, but everyone is encouraged to bring along something favorite. Typically parties become a pot-luck with regular attendee’s. There is also a gas grill which is available for anyone who has a taste for something BBQ’ed.

Tuesday’s wild bank robbery-turned-police chase that ended with cops shooting a suspect in downtown Seattle involved a 50-year old man from Burien named Douglas Cox, according to police.
Cox was armed with a pellet gun, which he wouldn’t drop after being order to by police. The weapon, which resembled a real handgun, was the most likely reason he was shot, police said. He was shot at the intersection of First and Spring Streets downtown.
Seattle Police Sgt. Gary Nelson said that Cox had recently bought the weapon — a near replica of a Colt .45 — with plans to rob the Wells Fargo Bank branch in West Seattle. Cox, who has been convicted of two previous bank robberies, was arrested with getaway driver Kevin Palmer.
Cox and Palmer are suspected of robbing the bank in the 2300 block of California Ave SW shortly after 10am Tuesday, then leading police on a lengthy chase to Capitol Hill and then to downtown Seattle.
Police said that Cox, and Palmer, 43, met while living in a halfway house in Seattle and plotted the West Seattle robbery over the past week. After his arrest Tuesday, Palmer told police that Cox told him that he refused to be caught by police, Nelson said.
Despite repeated warnings to surrender, police say, Cox displayed a handgun, prompting three Seattle police officers and one King County sheriff’s deputy to pump numerous gunshots into a Jeep Cherokee the men used in the robbery.
Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz said today that officers fired 15 shots and Cox was struck up to five times in the head and neck.
Cox was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition this morning. Metz identified the officers who fired their weapons as: Seattle police Sgt. Joseph Bauer, 45; Seattle Police Officer Jeff Geoghagen, 37; and Seattle Police Officer Chriseley Lang, 46. King County sheriff’s Deputy William Kememer, 40, also fired.
All four officers are on administrative leave while Seattle police investigate.
One bystander suffered minor injuries when he was sprayed with glass while seated in a nearby vehicle. The man declined medical aid, police said.
Palmer had been arrested before the shooting after he jumped out of the Cherokee at Eighth Avenue and Yesler Way, said FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs.
