Longtime Burien resident and local artist Dave Branson was out and about this last weekend, spending time sketching at Seahurst Park Beach, which played a significant role in his life growing up here since his family used to own a 9-acre wooded waterfront residential lot nearby.
Here’s what Dave had to say about this sketch:
It was a beautiful sunny day Saturday, so we went to Seahurst Park, and I did this sketch while we were there.
I was young when the sea wall went up at Seahurst Park, and it’s always felt like the park’s dominant feature to me. My Dad would jog at the park regularly, and I would join him sometimes when he could pry me away from Saturday morning cartoons. I remember when the sea wall was new and the concrete pavers on the path along the top of the wall hadn’t settled yet. They were musical because they would ring a little bit when we ran along the path.
Now I’ve heard that the northern part of the wall will be removed, just like the southern wall has been. It will take some getting used to. I’m still not used to how the southern half of the park has changed. I know it’s all for the best, environmentally, and now the beach will feel like the dominant feature of the park when our family visits the park in the coming decades.
And for a little historical background on this part of Burien and the Branson family, here’s some info taken from the city’s website:
In the early 1900s, the land known as Eagle Landing Park belonged to the Branson family. The Branson property was part of a 200-acre parcel owned by the Seahurst Land Company, which supplied water to local residents from springs on the property. The original Branson estate was a 9-acre wooded waterfront residential lot. In 1915, a relative of the owner built a residence in the northern portion of the property, which was upgraded and expanded in the 1930s. A county road through the property was platted but never built, and has been vacated since 1935. The property was logged about 90 years ago, when much of the timber in Burien, Seahurst, and Gregory Heights was felled to supply wood for America’s Liberty Ships in World War I.
The steeply sloped property sits atop two geologic units – glacial lake clay and silt below, and glacial outwash sand and gravel above – both deposited during glaciation of Puget Sound in the last Ice Age. Springs trickle from the hillside at an elevation of about 50 feet. The area has a long history of slope instability, according to oral history and the topographic features of the site.

There are “New Lower Auto Rates” out there, and new B-Town Blog Advertiser Harbor Insurance Services will help you find them.
Harbor Insurance Services is located in the Seahurst neighborhood of Burien. Owners Julie and Tim Reagan started this agency over 30 years ago in their basement. Shortly after that they moved their office to Burien, and 13 years later to Seahurst. Their daughter Leah Caudle “officially” joined the family biz in 2001, but she’s actually been working with them since the 8th grade doing filing, answering phones and helping out in the office.
Tim, Julie and Leah pride themselves in their shared philosophy of selling insurance which is service, service……and finally, service. They add to the service aspect by being family friendly and accessible. Julie adds, “When you call Harbor Insurance you’ll always talk to an agent.”

The folks at Harbor Insurance will treat you like family.
In addition to auto and home, Harbor Insurance insures a variety of vehicles, or as Julie calls them, “the toys.” This includes boats, RV’s, motorcycles and motor homes. And because they’re INDEPENDENT insurance agents they can shop around for best prices to suit your needs. Among their portfolio of insurance companies are:
- Grange
- Progressive
- Foremost
- Hagerty
And about those lower rates, Tim? “We now have tiered rating systems so we can offer the most preferred rate to the most preferred driver while still getting good rates for those with less than perfect records.”
Unlike other “Ma and Pa” businesses in Burien, Julie and Tim are also “Nana and Papa” (to Leah’s boys, Atticus- 2 1/2 and Dominic- 6 months). Atticus has moved on to daycare, but Dominic is in residence every day, holding court in his well-toyed corner of the office. “Customers just love bringing their kids in here because of all the toys”, explained Leah. A lot of customers also stop by just to watch Leah’s little red-headed boys grow and change.
Harbor’s slogan is “Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1979.” “Nana and Papa” pride themselves in taking care of insurance needs for multiple generations of families. Original customers have referred Harbor Insurance to their kids, who have again referred them to their kids. And with Leah on-board, there’s another generation or two of families who will enjoy Harbor Insurance Services’ .….well, service!

Harbor Insurance is located at 2104 SW 152nd in Seahurst.
If you want to shop around for lower rates on your insurance, contact Harbor Insurace:
- Send an email to reaganharbor@aol.com
- Call 206-241-8744
- Fax 206-246-0810
- Online at www.harborinsuranceservices.net
- The old-fashioned way: stop by and see them in person at 2104 SW 152nd (across from The Bean).
They’d love to meet you.
However you contact them, give Harbor Insurance Services a chance to show you how to lower your insurance rates on your auto, home and toys.

Advertiser Bistro Baffi Italian Fine Dining has been voted the “Best Italian Restaurant in Seattle in 2009″ by the readers of City Search!
That’s great news for us Burienites, as we don’t have to travel far to enjoy what thousands of voters already know….that Burien’s own Bistro Baffi is the best for SEATTLE Italian food. And a special note – there’s nearly 400 Italian Restaurants in the Seattle area…and Bistro Baffi is numero uno!
And the locals love it too. Bistro Baffi has just been awarded “The Best Place to Bring a Date” and “Best Restaurant $10 and Above” by the voters in the “Best of Highline” conducted by the Highline Times (or read our review here, conducted by Gina Bourdage).
These back-to-back honors have been well earned by owners Dinka and Michael Vujovich. From a full bar, to Italian and local wines, to authentic and homemade pastas, fantastic steaks and seafood prepared the Italian way, there’s something to suit every discerning palate at Bistro Baffi.
Don’t forget “Bring Your Own Wine Thursdays,” when, if you bring your own bottle of wine, there’s no corkage fee.
New to Baffi this fall is Chef Francesco Troiano (pictured, left). He’s a third generation chef from Napoli (Naples). He’s also a graduate of Paris’ Culinary Arts in BOTH Italian and French cuisine! He’s created what Chef Michael calls the “perfect marriage of blending sauces” (created by Chef Michael) “and pastas” (created by Chef Michael). Every night they’re preparing Italian specialties like cannelloni, ravioli, agnolotti, lasagna and strozzapreti for their patrons. The fun thing is that Chef Francesco or Chef Michael will bring these pasta specials and their seafood and meat specials directly to your table for you to see before you make up your mind.
Bistro Baffi is located in what they like to call “a cozy little corner of Burien.” You can find them at 15217 21st Ave SW, behind The Bean espresso stand and across from St. Francis, or online at www.bistrobaffi.com. When you’re online, be sure and sign up for their newsletter to see the weekly specials. Reservations are recommended on weekends at 206-244-0737 or online by clicking here.
BTB congratulates Advertiser Bistro Baffi on their big wins. You can enjoy the #1 Italian cuisine in the Seattle area Monday-Saturday starting at 5pm.

The B-Town Blog offers a warm-smile welcome to our latest Advertiser, Dr. Jim Coleman, and his amazing team at Seahurst Dental Design.
At the office of Dr. Jim Coleman you will experience how pleasant modern dentistry can be! Their focus is always on your health, and your comfort is their first concern. Their passion is creating gorgeous, healthy smiles coupled with minimally invasive complete care.

Dr. Jim Coleman
Dr. Coleman takes the time to involve you in deciding what the right care is for you. The office has a fun, relaxing, non-judgmental atmosphere. How refreshing!
Dr. Coleman’s office is truly “state-of-the-art.” Remember the sound and feel of “the drill”? Well, Dr. Jim says: “In our office, we offer the gentle process known as air abrasion. This decay-removing process is virtually pain-free as I can control the speed of the spray of air/powder mix as well as the intensity. There is generally no need for shots with this technology. It’s also free of the noise vibration and smell associated with the old drill.”
Just imagine a filling done with no drilling and no shot!
Patient safety and comfort are always the top concerns for Dr. Coleman. They use digital x-rays, which reduce radiation exposure by 90 percent, the Diagnodent system to locate problems on average three to five years sooner, along with pictures so you can see your teeth, too. To help you relax, you can enjoy chair massagers, hot towels, aromatherapy and Tempur-Pedic™ chair pads.
Would you believe a same-day onlay or crown is possible?
One visit, no temporary, no “silly putty” impressions to gag on. Start to finish in a little over an hour. Dr. Coleman uses CEREC technology to design, fabricate and place all ceramic, metal free restorations in just one visit.
Sedation dentistry is wonderful for those whose fears or busy schedules have caused them to put off care. Can you believe, it is possible to achieve a healthy mouth often in only one visit! Millions of people have experienced this relaxing non-IV technique where, by taking a pill, “hours seem like minutes.”
For patients who want whiter teeth, they offer in-office power whitening (i.e. Zoom!), which achieve brighter smiles in just a couple of hours. Or, for the do-it-yourselfer, professional home whitening kits.
Jim Coleman, DDS, FWCMID, has more than 35 years’ experience providing smile makeovers along with comprehensive dental care. At Dr. Coleman’s office they provide all the expertise and services of the downtown Docs but with the hometown warmth and convenience.

It’s one of the highlights of the Burien area on the 4th of July – the Three Tree Point Fireworks celebration, which is supported entirely by donations from residents in area communities, not just the citizens who live down there.
From personal experience, I can say that these fireworks celebrations are amazing all-day Americana affairs, starting with a community breakfast, a flag-raising ceremony, a children’s parade (with the incentive being a prize of a popsicle at the end) then an evening of outstanding, professional fireworks launched from a barge anchored right off the point.
It’s a crazy block party, with live music, beach parties, insanely huge bonfires and more, and the 10pm display can be seen for miles.
Neighbors have already set up a website for this year’s blast, and they’re seeking donations to help offset the $20k+ cost. For those who donate more than $150, you get invited to a fun neighborhood dinner party.
Here’s some info from the Three Tree Point Fireworks Fund website:
The Three Tree Point Fireworks celebration is supported entirely by donations from the communities of Three Tree Point, Seahurst, Normandy Park, Seola Beach, Arroyo Beach and Arbor Heights.
Our barge based, high-altitude fireworks show has gotten better every year thanks to countless people of have donated time and money.
In 2009, our goal is to keep the fireworks and community celebrations at the same great level that they have been at. This is the first year we are seeking corporate sponsors for our event.
We raise funds in May to ensure we have time to get all the permits, insurance and the best vendors.
Originally started by the Miller family as a gift to The Three Tree Point Community, the firewoks tradition was continued by neighbors when the Millers moved away.
In addition to the fireworks, the neighborhood traditions of pancake breakfast , kids games, flag raising with awards, bike parade and more have been ushering in summer at our great communitnity. What a great place to live!

BTB Advertiser Philip Kelley just sent us this photo and update on Jason Sanders of “The Bean” espresso, who is back working as of today (Thursday, March 26th).
As you may recall, Jason broke his pelvis in a head-on collision in California in late December:
Important announcement, sort’a:
Jason Sanders, Seahurst’s fav-o-rite barrista, who was seriously injured in an accident back in December has returned to work.
Tanned, rested, ready.
He is, not surprisingly, very happy to be back in action, and is lookin’ good.
Reduced hours this week; 9 AM – Noon, then back to a fuller schedule as early as next week if he feels up to it.
Caffeine ergo sum.
So be sure to drop by The Bean, located across from the Seahurst Post Office, near Bistro Baffi, and welcome Jason back! And while you’re in the ‘hood, be sure to say hello to Philip Kelley, who’s located across the street, next to the post office in Advanced Massage.
Here’s a link to our previous coverage of Jason’s accident and recovery.

BTB Reader Sally Irvine sent us the photo above, of herself feeding an apparently lost male Golden (aka “Chinese”) Pheasant bird Thursday in the Hurstwood neighborhood of Burien.
Sally says:
“I live in Hurstwood and have been visited by a Golden Pheasant, he ate out of my hand today.
The zoo thinks he is most likely an escapee from someone’s private aviary. I would like to try to find his owner so a coyote doesn’t get him.”
According to Wikipedia, the Golden Pheasant is:
“…native to forests in mountainous areas of western China but feral populations have been established in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.
The adult male is 90-105 cm in length, its tail accounting for two-thirds of the total length. It is unmistakable with its golden crest and rump and bright red body. The deep orange “cape” can be spread in display, appearing as an alternating black and orange fan that covers all of the face except its bright yellow eye, with a pinpoint black pupil.
Males have a golden-yellow crest with a hint of red at the tip.
Despite the male’s showy appearance, these hardy birds are very difficult to see in their natural habitat, which is dense, dark young conifer forests with sparse undergrowth. Consequently, little is known of their behaviour in the wild.
They feed on the ground on grain, leaves and invertebrates, but roost in trees at night. Whilst they can fly, they prefer to run: but if startled they can suddenly burst upwards at great speed, with a distinctive wing sound.
Although they can fly in short bursts they are quite clumsy in flight and spend most of their time on the ground.”
So, has anyone out there lost a male Golden Pheasant?
If so, please email us immediately and we’ll connect you with Sally, who will help you retrieve your bird.
BTB Advertiser Bistro Baffi gives Burien a refreshing twist on the expected Italian fare.
From the moment you enter the Bistro you feel like family. Fresh, not over seasoned flavors resonate though each dish. The originality and robust selections on the menu make an evening in the little corner Seahurst hideaway enchanting. I don’t know if it was the fireplace, the colorful artwork or the impressive wall of wine but the romantic atmosphere of Bistro Baffi cannot be denied despite its tucked-away location.
Former owners of The Beach House Italian Café on Alki, Michael Vujovich (chef) and his wife Dinka have brought Burien an inspiring variation to the expected Italian cuisine. Shopping daily for the freshest ingredients at Pike Place Market is how Michael determines what he will create for the daily specials. Offering flavors of his home in Montenegro, there are options for even the most discerning palate at very reasonable prices. He even makes it a point to visit each and every table to make sure you are enjoying your meal. You won’t be able to mistake Michael due to his signature handlebar or “baffi” moustache and charismatic personality.

Michael Vujovich, Owner/Chef of Bistro Baffi.
I had the pleasure of experiencing the daily special of pork with grilled peppers and a creamy Gorgonzola which could have been easily overpowered by the strong flavors of the aged cheese, but was seasoned to perfection. I started off the meal with the signature stuffed mushroom caps with more than your traditional basics inside. They were accompanied by the famous spicy pink sauce which I expected a heavy bite from the description but was pleasantly surprised to find the spice was only a gentle kiss in the delicious blend. The freshness of each dish truly showed through by not being over spiced allowing the integrity of each ingredient shine. I wrapped up the meal with a tiramisu and an entertaining shot of flaming Sambuca. I have had my share of tiramisu in the past but Bistro Baffi has found a way to balance the sweet and savory for a wonderful end to the evening.
To find food this fresh and genuine you would expect to pay quite a bit more than the prices you will find on the menu.
I learned also that this February 14th, Valentines Day, Bistro Baffi is taking reservations for a romantic six-course dinner with a variety of options for the main course. Mentioning you heard about this event, which has limited space, on The B-Town Blog will allow you to receive $20 off for each person along with discounts on wines from around the world. Call (206) 244-0737 to book your special Valentine’s Day Dinner package before Feb. 10th (the secret password is “Scontare“)!

Tucked away in Seahurst, Bistro Baffi is worth finding.
Insiders tip; ask for the daily specials on any visit. These items will not only be some of the freshest and most seasonal ideas straight from the creative chef, but something you may not be able to get on a daily basis.
I had driven by Bistro Baffi a number of times always telling myself, I have to check that place out some time, I can genuinely say I am glad I did. This place is a must visit for a night of exceptional flavors made by a family that takes pride in and loves to share with their guests cuisine of the home in Montenegro.
Bistro Baffi is located at 15217 21st Ave SW in Burien, across from the Seahurst Post Office and St. Francis of Assisi:

One of our area’s hidden gems is Seahurst Park.
And tucked away at the beach there is another diamond – the Environmental Science Center.
The Environmental Science Center (ESC) is the only community-based, not-for-profit environmental education organization in south King County with programs for all ages.
With a primary focus on K through 12, ESC offers school-day programs including classroom lessons and field trips, after school programs, summer camps, and community presentations.

State Sen. Joe McDermott, ESC Executive Director Julie Burr and Burien Deputy Mayor Rose Clark.
Since its founding in 1999, rapid expansion in programs has led to an increasing number of program participants served, with more than 8,000 clients during 2008, up from 5,000 clients in 2006.
“We want to foster the next group of environmental stewards,” said ESC Executive Director Julie Burr. “Kids don’t get out there, really out-of-doors, like they used to. We reach out with special effort to minority or lower-income children.”
Julie recently spent time showing the B-Town Blog around the Center, and brought us up to speed on a big project they have in mind.
“We have a vision for an Environmental Learning Center,” Julie said. “And we have the perfect spot to build it on.”
Years ago, when Seahurst Park was the property of King County, a park caretaker actually lived in a cottage just a few yards from the building ESC currently works out of.

Guests at the campaign kickoff gathered in front of the old caretaker's cottage.
The caretaker is long gone, and the cottage is boarded up.
“We will renovate inside and expand the cottage a bit on its south side.”
The result will be a 2,200 square foot facility which will seat fifty students.
It will take about $1.3 million to fully renovate. The fundraising has been going on for a while, with $900,000 having been raised to far.
“The remaining $400,000 is proving the toughest. Several major corporations sincerely want to help, but have had to drastically cut back their civic donations” due to the current economic state of affairs.
Corporate groups who have contributed toward the Learning Center include Boeing, Alaska Airlines and Waste Management.
“We greatly appreciate, as well, our funders who help keep our regular programs running,” Julie said. These groups include:
- The Russell Family Foundation
- The JiJi Foundation
- The Bottler Charitable Trust
- The City of Burien
- The Horizon Foundation
- The Seattle Foundation
- King Conservation District, WRIA 9
Julie received a special gift last month.
“My daughter, Jesann, bless her heart, went out and raised $1,540 from her friends for the Learning Center. She didn’t tell me about her efforts at all,” Julie recalled. “Then on Christmas Day she gave me the checks. What a sweetheart.”
No gift is too small (or too big!), so if you would like to contribute, please feel free to contact Julie anytime:

DIRECTIONS:: From Ambaum Blvd. go west on 144th. Turn right on 13th. That road will take you all the way to the beach, where parking is available.

Some recaps and updates on this wacky Brrrien snow “event,” which appears to be winding down.
First, this urgent street closure update from the City of Burien, as of 12/18 8pm:
Road conditions
• SW 160th St. closed-Use 8th Ave SW to access Highline Medical Center ER
• Southbound Ambaum Blvd is closed at SW 116th St. One lane is open northbound Ambaum Blvd
• 1st Ave S from SW 152nd St to SW 156th is currently CLOSED
• SW 156th St from 1st Ave SW to 4th Ave SW is currently CLOSEDBurien road conditions are deteriorating. Please drive only if necessary and with extreme caution
Road crews concentrate on getting and keeping primary routes (like 1st Ave S) plowed. Once the snow stops and the primary routes are clear, crews move to the secondary routes and then neighborhood roads. Following the plows are the sanders to provide traction on the ice. Snow plows’ rubber blades do not remove ice.More details about priority routes can be found on our Snow & Ice Routes Map [pdf].
Secondly, tomorrow’s school closures (Fri.12/19) – far as we can tell, every school is closed, so have fun kids:
- Highline Public Schools: CLOSED
- Seattle Public Schools: CLOSED
- John F. Kennedy High School: CLOSED
- St. Francis of Assisi: CLOSED
- Hamlin-Robinson School: CLOSED
- Westside School: CLOSED
- Tukwila Public Schools: CLOSED
- Federal Way School District: CLOSED
Here’s the updated, yet sadly “expired” winter weather advisory (as of 6:19pm 12/18):
... Winter Weather Advisory for Everett and vicinity… the Seattle and Bremerton areas… and the Admiralty Inlet area has expired…
The Winter Weather Advisory for snow is no longer in effect. The snow showers had ended or tapered off to flurries… thus additional significant snowfall accumulation was unlikely.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
Those planning travel in the advisory area should be prepared for hazardous… winter driving conditions.
And now, some of our personal observations from today:
- This afternoon, we drove to and from Sea-Tac Airport safely, but slowly (and saw lots of idiots speeding around in their SUVs…d’oh!)
- In our ‘hood, we saw a dude snowboarding behind a truck (w/no helmet of course). That’s right – the kid was being towed by the truck, sliding around pretty quickly.
- Another guy was cruising around in a snowmobile, towing his kids’ sled behind (if he had a glowing red schnauze we woulda yelled “Slow down Rudolph!”)
- Favorite snow prank of the day: telling our kids to stand under a snow-covered tree and look up under the branches closely (“there’s something really cool up there”), then tossing a snowball into the branches, thus causing the accumulated snow to fall onto said children’s faces…ha.
Here are some more BTB Reader pics:
Photographic proof that 5 inches of snow fell in Seahurst Thursday; photo courtesy Stephanie Breslin, who says: “My boyfriend was measuring the snow to let me know how much had fallen since yesterday…not very scientific but I thought it was fun…”

The B-Town Blog welcomes its latest Advertiser with molto amore’: Bistro Baffi Italian Cuisine!
Recently, we were at Michael Vujovich’s Bistro Baffi on business – instead of our usual gastronomical adventure – to get background on Burien/Seahurst’s newest white-tablecloth Italian Restaurant (opened in April 2007) for this very article.
At the appointed time (4:48pm), owner/chef Michael pulled up and brought in an enormous Neah Bay Salmon caught fresh that morning.
Michael and his wife Dinka emphasized to BTB that everything served at Bistro Baffi is fresh daily. You can’t get any fresher than that gorgeous pink fish! We had the privilege of watching him bone and filet this 30-pound fish in five minutes – a record that chef Michael is proud of.

Bistro Baffi Chef/Owner Michal Vujovich filleted this huge salmon in under five minutes!
“Not even the fishmongers at the Pike Place Market, where the daily freshest and best seafood is selected are that fast” he adds.
It was one of the nightly specials available that evening to those dining in Baffi’s two lovely dining rooms and to the 12-person party in the very private dining room. Other specials for that night included veal, steak, risotto and chicken (Baffi also has an extensive menu of appetizers, fish, meats, chicken, pastas, etc). If you like pasta and risotto, ask for Michael’s signature “Pink Sauce”. The ‘pink sauce’ is prepared individually for each entrée. If you are a meat lover, you are going to love dishes that are enhanced with fresh herbs, spices, roasted garlic and wine.

Freshly-caught salmon is a specialty at Bistro Baffi.
Michael starts his day quite early preparing sides, appetizers and baked goods. I saw the lobster ravioli, which was both an appetizer and entrée that he prepared in the morning, and the fresh cut herbs and condiments and the huge loaf of still warm baked herbed foccia bread. The restaurant was filled with the delicious aroma of Tiramisu and Chocolate Walnut Flowerless Cake baking in the oven.
And by the way, if you’re dining at Bistro Baffi for a special occassion, you’ll receive a complimentary dessert to celebrate.
And one more thing, so that we can all enjoy the best of Italian cooking during this economic downturn, Michael and his wife Dinka are offering a free appetizer with entrees on Mondays and Tuesdays!
A few years ago, internationally famous Chef/Owner Michael Vujovich sold his wildly popular (with West Seattleites and others) Alki Beach Italian Café, which he owned for 12 years to travel to his home country of Montenegro. There he opened Bistro Mare right on the Montenegran Bay of the Adriatic Sea (“mare” means “Ocean” in Italiano).

Bistro Baffi is located across the street from the Seahurst Post Office at 15217 21st Ave SW.
A yearly visit to Italy and Montenegro gives Michael never-ending inspiration, so you can always expect new dishes at Bistro Baffi. When you try the Spaghetti Pescatore, you will be taken away to the distant shores of Montenegro or Italy.
There are 108 wines on the rather extensive wine list, which was designed to be paired with the food. Many wines are imported directly from Italy and are rated 100 points on the wine spectators list. There are also French, German, Australian, Spanish, Californian and Northwest Wines.
Working with Washington Winery St. Hilaire Cellars, Michael has also developed Bistro Baffi wines: Villa Toscana, Sangiovese and Syrah, which are all very popular with their clientele. Baffi has a full service bar with a variety of specialty cocktails – can you say “Martini”?
Bistro Baffi is a very special place. When you enter you will see Michael busy cooking in the kitchen behind the bar, which still does not prevent him from coming around to greet all the tables. Michael wants your experience at his Bistro to be a memorable one! Once you come and try the food and experience the service you will be “addicted to it” as some customers and reviewers claim.

Owner/Chef Michael Vujovich shows off his privately-branded Bistro Baffi wine.
We have enjoyed many special events in our lives at Bistro Baffi. Last year we even selected it to hide from the trick-or-treaters on Halloween!
We may do it again this year, especially if he serves the pumpkin ravioli. Especially now that the BTB has learned that on October 31st, all customers will be welcome, but those who wear a costume will automatically be entered to win a costume contest. First prize is a $100 Bistro Baffi gift certificate, Second is a $50 Baffi gift certificate and Third Prize is a bottle of Bistro Baffi wine.
And why is it called Bistro Baffi? What is this mysterious Italian word? You only have to take one look at Chef Michael’s curly moustache (“Baffi” means “moustache” in Italian). His small handlebar moustache also serves as the logo.
You can find the ”moustached-one” and his wife Dinka at Bistro Baffi, which is located at 15217 21st Ave SW in Burien across from the Seahurst Post Office, about 10 minutes from the SeaTac Airport and 25 minutes from downtown Seattle, and just minutes from anywhere in the greater Highline area.
Hours are Monday-Saturday starting at 5pm. Call 206-244-0737 for reservations (recommended Thursday-Saturday).
So, raise a glass of fine wine, click on Bistro Baffi’s Ad on the upper right sidebar and get set for some amazing food!
From B-Town Blog Advertiser Susan Plecko comes this spectacular sunset photo, taken Tues. night Sept. 16th:
Fred Freitag, current owner of what was once the Three Tree Point Store, discovered a very interesting and historic hand-drawn map of the area in the basement of his house, which he has exclusively shared with the B-Town Blog.
It appears that the “Authoritative, accurate and comprehensive map of Three Tree Point and its immediate environs” was drawn by store owner Vi Sparks on Oct. 6, 1974, with “slight assistance” from Bill and Jeanne Sparks.
Some of our favorite elements of this map:
- Some very cute drawings of ships, airplanes, cars, fish, birds, dogs, houses and even a donkey pulling a cart labeled “What is it??“!
- “Scale: 1 = an unknown number of feet!” scribbled at the bottom as a key
- Humorous 1970s-era Smiley Face drawn in some blank space near the center

ROBIN’S STORY – A FASHIONISTA IS BORN
Robin moved here in 1997 with her dog from Newport Beach, California, where she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles in 1989. Right after graduating, she started a clothing manufacturing company in Costa Mesa by the name of Tantrumm Apparel, Inc. and Red Heart, Inc. It happened quickly after attending a Super Bowl party during the Gulf War, where she worn a pair of customized 501 Levis. She bleached, washed and painted them to resemble the American Flag, and people at the party went crazy. They all wanted to know where they could purchase her jeans. So, she knew she had to start making them the next day. She called Nordstrom and showed them a pair of cut off shorts and jeans and that sent the ball rolling with orders all across the West Coast.
Robin was in business!

Once in Seattle, she located in the Junction of West Seattle, which she found fun and exciting. And why wouldn’t she? She met her husband Dusty Dunkle three months later and they were engaged five months after that. The Dunkles now live in Normandy Park and have two sweet little girls, Macy and Avery, and are very much a part of their community. Dusty owns Customer Research on SW 152nd in Burien and the girls attend Creative Minds Montessori. After working as a Real Estate Executive for Coldwell Banker, Del Bianco for the past decade, Robin really felt that she wanted to get back into the fashion game. She could see the lack of boutique type clothing offered in B-Town and wanted to change this. Robin is pleased to say that Howard and Marge is a family-run business with the added joy of having her sister, and store manager, Jessica Kelley.
Robin and Co. is pleased to say that “the store is doing better than they could have ever hoped for, and the community loves what they have to offer. It’s nice to be able to just run by our shop especially if you don’t have a lot of time to pick up that something special gift or just a cool novelty t-shirt to wear that night at the Tin Room or others of B-Town’s fine, fun restaurants & bars.”
Robin wants to say “thank you Burien for all your support!”
And of course she also wants to invite all of the B-Town Blog readers, as well as current customers, to come on down for the Grand Opening party on August 17 to party-hearty and meet the real Howard and Marge.
So, give Howard and Marge a hearty B-Town Blog welcome by clicking on their Ad in the lower right sidebar and checking out their offerings (and yes, perhaps even getting your own “Yummie Tummie”)!
It’s Friday night in July, when the sun sets precisely at 9pm.
What better way to reflect on another spectacular summer week than by visually appreciating another gorgeous sunset, as captured in this photo by B-Town Blog Advertiser and local Realtor Susan Plecko:

While conducting “research” in B-Town, I discovered a brand new boutique: “Howard and Marge,” owned by Robin Dunkle and named after her much-loved grandparents.
Conveniently located next door to the Seahurst Post Office, “Howard and Marge” offers contemporary clothing for women, men, children and the occasional local humorist.
Robin owned and operated various clothing lines in her pre-40 days (her words not mine…I swear). Having an itch to start something new, Robin made offers on various retail properties in B-Town in the hopes of opening a store. She located a property for rent immediately next to the ONLY post office that I frequent in Seahurst.
Coincidence? I think not.
Robin completely transformed the annex to the post office; bright, cheery interiors belie the small square footage. If your preference runs along the line of elastic waist pants…shop somewhere else, but let me tell you about what struck my fancy: after perusing the Republic denim, I came upon a suspicious-slim appearing tank top. The weave was tight ‘and yet,’ the fabric was supple. Hmm, perhaps this was just the thing for my ever-growing muffin-tops. This would defiantly refresh my girlish figure.
Robin described her best selling top, which was called (brace yourself) “The Yummie Tummie.”
Never one to bother with trying things on, I asked her to ring up my “yummie” new tank top.
Robin: “Excuse me, Underwood-Undercover, don’t you want to try your Yummie Tummie tank top on?”
U.U.: “No, thank you, it will be fine.”
Robin: “Well, with your coat and sweater on, it is hard for me to tell if it will fit you, maybe you should to try it on.”
Her comments rained on deaf ears; I quickly paid for my new top and raced home. I could not wait to see if my purchase would actually ’secretly slim my mid section,’ as the advert read.
A lot of grunting and groaning was heard from the recesses of my boudoir. Insane thoughts raced through my head:
- Why the heck didn’t I try this on earlier, and what size was this anyway?
- Perhaps the size was mismarked!
- Now that I had it on, how was I going to get it off?!
- Was I permanently entombed in my Yummie Tummie?
- And why did I look like the Michelin Man???
Drastic measures had to be taken.
I sheepishly exchanged my Yummie for the next size up and encouraged Robin to force everyone, no matter how defiant they were, to try on their Yummies too, just to make sure they worked on their Tummies (I know, I’m getting sick of these words too…but hang on to your Tummie, as this column’s almost over…).
She kindly refrained from answering me, only giving me a slight nod.
So, do you need a Yummie Tummie? Yeah, who doesn’t need to camouflage lumps, bumps and hangage. Now that I have the correct size, I look forward to Yummie Tummie expanding their line to include; Lithesome Legs or something equally as fetching, like Fit Butt.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Welcome our newest Columnist, local Burienite humorist Shawn Underwood! Twenty-five years of living in Burien gives Shawn much fodder for her writings. All of her stories are true, or at least have a grain of truth with no added embellishments.]
There is a neighborhood handy mart at the top of the hill, known to me as, “Fresh Ice”. When the new owners bought the store, they papered the windows with handmade signs, one of which read: “We have fresh ice”. What the heck! Fresh ice as opposed to stale ice? This was an ongoing argument between me and my husband. He said that of course ice can be old, I said, “Who cares? Ice is ice”.
My daughter, asked me to return a “broken” DVD. The children and their hordes of friends were all demanding dinner. Although the roads were treacherous and despite the ongoing snowstorm, I happily escaped the mad chaos at home and slipped and slid my way uphill to Fresh Ice. Let dinner burn…it usually did anyway, according to my spouse.
Han, the current owner of the store, manned the counter at “Fresh Ice”. Han and I “being old friends”, exchanged pleasantries. I said that his ice was always the freshest in town. He beamed and said something in response. I mentioned our problems with the DVD. Han did not reply as he was busy with other customers. I noticed he was no longer in good spirits; maybe he had a cramp or something. I found another movie and returned to the counter. Heavens, for the first time I could remember, Han was not smiling at me! I looked behind me; maybe someone else had committed an offense. Three people were behind me; no one looked happy as I was now holding up the line. Han said to me in a very crabby voice: “No movies for you”, or something to that effect. He also said that I needed to get a new DVD player before I could rent another DVD from him. This seemed rather extreme. I scrolled through my hazy memory banks; I tried to remember what possible previous offenses I could have committed. Perhaps one of my children stole some candy or was sassy to his wife. I was completely flummoxed. I sidled out of line and hoped he would forget about me.
As I left the line in shame, I warily moved back over to the DVD section and picked out a popular “used” as opposed to “new” DVD. I caught Han’s steely eye again and asked if I could rent the long outdated DVD. The people in line looked at me with pity. Han grudgingly shouted at me that it was an old DVD and therefore suitable for me, the assumed wrecker of new movies. He added that the DVD was not really worth viewing. I hastily took my DVD to the counter where Han examined it, relented, and said that he would not charge me for the rental of this DVD. Maybe he felt bad when he barked at me earlier. However, he requested that I not rent any further “new” DVD’s. I was a demolisher of DVD’s and did not value his property. The man behind me then attempted to tell Han that he had not examined the DVD properly for scratches. Apparently it was Han’s custom to examine all DVD’s before renting them in case he ran into people like me who made a habit of scratching things. The nice man showed Han how to look for scratches accurately. I felt relieved that the focus was off me and sprinted out the door. I hastily shouted a farewell to my new friend, (nice man) and Han.
Back home, smoke was coming out of the oven. I recounted my misfortunes with formerly nice, “Fresh Ice” store proprietor, but my ungrateful family ignored me and asked why the dinner was taking so long to prepare. My wretched family felt that Han was justified in his curt dismissal of me, a loyal customer. I called my friend Dorkus who listened patiently. She was not surprised that I received the boot from Han. She said she had been meaning to tell me that his actual name was KAN. Dorkus and I then argued about the store owner’s name for quite a while as the dinner continued to steam and smolder from the oven. Good grief, my hearing seemed to be as bad as my husband’s! I should shop elsewhere as I honestly don’t think I could face Kan after I called him Han for years. Why in world had he not told me his actual name?
One month later, we needed some milk for dinner. I told my son to run to “Fresh Ice” and pick up a gallon of milk. He smugly reminded me that he was “restricted”, and could not use the car. Darn! I had forgotten the punishment that I meted out when one of my offspring and his posse had a party at our house! In a fit of fury, I drove up to “Fresh Ice” for the cursed milk. As I walked into the store, Kan happily greeted me; “Hello Dawn”. Apparently, we were friends again; I didn’t remind him that my name is; Shawn.
