The 4th annual ‘Cove to Clover’ fundraiser will be held March 9 through March 11, with a Sponsor Kick-off Party to be held at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12th.

This year will bring several new events to this great local event, including a new 10K run, a Talent Show and an Angel Dinner to be held Feb. 4.

If you’re interested in Sponsoring this event, please come to Mick Kelly’s on Thursday night Jan. 12 – we’ll be there!

Here’s more info on this great, locally-produced fundraising event:

This race is unlike any other 5K or 10K. For one thing, it is very hard. So hard in fact that it is fast becoming a test piece for NW runners. For starters, “Snake Hill” rises nearly 1000′ in the first mile of the course. Around mile 2 you’ll encounter ”The Uprising”, a runner obstacle that has been constructed in the middle of a live Celtic battlefield. For your suffering, you will be rewarded with on-course Celtic pipers and a finish line festival that delivers the goods (2 beer gardens, 2 stages with live entertainment, free root beer garden and free hot dogs for children).

The Cove to Clover is a 501(c)(3) umbrella charity which distributes all proceeds to local charities. The organization is very lean and run by passionate volunteers. Be assured, your participation will be making a positive impact on your community.

The third annual Burien Brat Trot 5K Fundraiser Run was a huge, crowded success in Olde Burien Sunday afternoon, with hundreds of runners and residents crowding the streets.

A total of 677 runners finished the main race, and we were told by Organizers that “over 900″ registered, more than twice last year’s event.

The overall #1 finisher was Angelo Baca, 31. Baca works for the Highline School District as a Teacher in the Native Student and Family Wellness Initiative at Burien’s Big Picture High School.

When asked his secret for winning by 1:18 over last year’s champ Matt Parker, Baca said he has been training for “bigger races,” including upcoming Nationals in November and December (scroll down to see a video of him crossing the finish line).

Local Humorist and Author Shawn Underwood actually predicted Baca would win before the race even started, based on how he looked while waiting to start the run.

“He was totally in the zone,” Underwood said. “He appeared to be meditating, and he just had that look in his eyes.”

The top female finisher was Tori Zellerhoff, 17, a student at Decatur High School in Federal Way.

“I’ve been running track since first grade,” she said after the race, “so I’m used to running.”

The youngest top finisher was Aiden Basco, 12, of Burien, who came in 7th overall. Basco is a rising local runner who’s done well in previous races, including last March’s Cove to Clover.

Here are the Top 10 Finishers – to download a PDF of the Race Results, click here:

“Danny (House, Tin Room Owner) had some great specials for the participants,” said Chuck Tuman, who sent us the pics below. “Pints of Alaskan Amber were $2.50 and Bloody Mary’s for $3.25. Tin Dog and fries for $7.50, Tin Room Pancakes with fruit and maple syrup for $6.00 (really a dynamite pancake according to the young woman eating it…) and my favorite, Huevos Rancheros with potatoes on the side!”

The Tin Room Bar (a BTB advertiser and Brat Trot sponsor) is sponsoring these fun events leading up to the Brat Trot, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 9th in Olde Burien.

We’re proud to have been Sponsors of this year’s Cove to Clover weekend, along with many other local businesses, and are happy to report that 2011 was a record year for the three-year old fundraiser, with an estimated $40,000 raised for local charities including the Highline Area Food Bank, Hospitality House and the Highline Schools Foundation.

Last year’s totals was just over $36,000, so we’re looking at a minimum 11% increase.

“I’m guessing that we raised around $40K this year,” Race Organizer John Nelson said via text message. “But there’s still much accounting to do…”

Rest assured, as soon as the final numbers are released, we’ll post ‘em. We’ll also post pics of the giant, cool over-sized check presentation too.

Friday night’s Pub Crawl brought in record crowds to Burien bars and restaurants. On Saturday and Sunday there was a Celtic Fair at Town Square, and of course, the big 5K race on Sunday which had around 1,500 registered runners and 814 finishers (read our previous coverage and see our photos here).

One cool feature we’d like to send huge big shout-outs about is the “Athlete Angel” program, which allowed people to sponsor needy Highline School District students for $25 each, assuring them all a spot in the race.

138 local, needy students were sponsored by “Angels,” and 20 pairs of youth running shoes were purchased with the $500 Shoemaker Donation.

You can soon view the sponsors names on the Angel Recognition Plaque in the entryway of Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub, but in the meantime here’s the info we have:

TOTAL: 138

About the organization from the C2C website:

The Cove to Clover is 501(c)(3) non-profit and disburses all proceeds to other local charities including the food bank and Highline School Foundation.

The Cove to Clover event has evolved and is a truely grass-roots production. The race was originally organized by a group of friends with the mission of producing a professional and fun event that showcases the Highline community at its best. Mick Kelly’s was behind the event from the beginning and fanned the embers of enthusiam to insure they caught fire.

Local runners have responded to the vision of suffering for a good cause and the event has grown quickly. In its first year, the race had about 450 runners and was able to donated $12,000 to local charities. In the second year, our charity contribution and number of registrants nearly tripled to 1200 and $37,000.

We expect the event to continue to grow and become an institution in our community. Of course none of this could happen without the support of the sponsors, City officials and many volunteers.

Thanks for participating! We will do our best to keep the goodness and fun flowing.

Please contact racedirector@covetoclover.com for more info.

Of course, we’re hoping that next year that C2C raises even more, but to do so it will need more donors, more volunteers and more money! Be sure to bookmark www.covetoclover.com and look to the blog for updates as it gets near.
