The Highline Schools Foundation announced this week that they have “joined the growing list of community organizations supporting the new Highline Music4Life™ program.”

In case you’re not familiar with it, Highline Music4Life is a community activity that strives to acquire musical instruments and supplies for the school district’s young people from low-income families.

“We are thrilled to support this community-wide effort,” says Ashley Fosberg, the Foundation’s Executive Director. “Arts and cultural education is one of the Foundation’s main areas of focus for funding in Highline Schools. We are so impressed with the work that Highline Music4Life is doing to help get instruments into our schools. The organization’s mission directly aligns with the Foundation’s vision—so an alliance is natural and will help serve even more students in our district.”

“Educators across the nation know that children who study instrumental music do better in math, science, foreign languages, history, computer science and other scholastic disciplines,” says David Endicott of the Highline Music4Life organization. “Putting them on a math- or science-only regimen is like putting them on a meat-only diet. Studying instrumental music helps them do better in school and makes them into better citizens.”

Highline Music4Life acquires musical instruments in two ways:

First, instruments that are “lovingly used” can be donated to the program by adults who no longer use them but want to make them available to young people.

“We also buy new musical instruments that the Highline band and orchestra directors tell us they need for eligible young musicians,” Endicott says. Music4Life has a cooperative arrangement with Kennelly Keys Music and instrument manufacturers that results in bulk-buying at low cost.

Donations also help take care of musical supplies and repairs. Monetary donations can be made via PayPal accounts or by visiting the www.HighlineMusic4Life.org Website.

Highline Music4Life is a community activity that is Rotary inspired. It is co-sponsored by the three Rotary clubs served by the school district: Des Moines Rotary, Burien-White Center Rotary and SeaTac Rotary. Endicott emphasizes, however, that it is not necessary to be a Rotarian to support the program. “All that is needed is that a person understands the unique value that instrumental music plays in the education of a young person.”

Highline Music4Life begins by providing musical instruments to fifth and sixth graders who qualify for the free- and reduced-lunch program. “In special circumstances, we can provide instruments to older children, as well,” Endicott says. “Our goal is to enable as many young people to take advantage of these instrumental music opportunities as possible.”

Currently, 24 percent of all fifth and sixth grade students in Highline Public Schools participate in instrumental music programs. The Highline Music4Life initiative intends to increase that number to 40 percent.

Music4Life™ acquires musical instruments and supplies for young musicians from low-income families in the Highline Public Schools. Highline Music4Life is a community activity that is inspired by the Rotary Clubs of Des Moines, Burien-White Center and SeaTac. It is not necessary to be a Rotarian to participate. For more information or to donate an instrument to Highline Music4Life, contact David@DavidEndicott.us or call (206) 409-3275 or go to their Website at www.HighlineMusic4Life.org. Instrument donation forms are available online, as well as at the instrument drop-off sites at Kennelly Keys Music near South Center and the KeyBank branch in Des Moines.

Our single friend Bart is 50-years young, blue-eyed, still has most of his hair, with a sparkling personality and great sense of humor.
All proceeds from this show will benefit both the Highline and White Center Food Banks.

Here are the details:

WHAT: Burien/White Center Rotary fundraiser concert featuring the Boeing Employees Choir

WHEN: Friday, Dec. 4th beginning at 7:30pm

WHERE: Highline Performing Arts Center, located next to Highline High School at 401 S. 152nd St., Burien.

COST: Please bring non-perishable food donations to help feed your hungry neighbors during the holidays!

INFO: From the Boeing Employees Choir website:

A good cause, and a great venue, the Burien/White Center Rotary Club has asked us to put on a concert for the Burien community in order to collect non-perishable food items for the local Food Banks.

Bring a food donation and bring a friend!

And forward this invite so we can pack the house and the food bank!

The Boeing Employees Choir is a concert choral group serving as The Boeing Company’s ambassador in song, sharing the gift of music with audiences in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State – as well as throughout the world. The choir has existed since the early 1940s. Today, we make about 25 appearances each year.

Composed primarily of Boeing employees, retirees and their families, our choir is a 501c(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization.

The Burien/White Center Rotary Club, founded in 1955, has a long and rich history of service to the community.

Over this 50+ year duration, club members have volunteered countless hours of service and generated hundreds of thousands of dollars which have been distributed back into the community.

Below are some comments we’ve received from Readers:

Knew Dick for over 50 years.  Friend at Highline Hich,  co-community worker through Burien Chamber of Commerce, Highline Community Hospital Foundation Board, 4th of July Parade, Miss Burien Scholarship Pageant, Political volunteer, but most of all a shared love of Burien and young people.  He was truly a giver and he gave out of a sincerely giving heart.  Never expecting or wanting anything back.  I draw comfort knowing I’ll see him again at a much bigger reunion.
