The Kent Police Department has created a website showcasing photos of 160 recovered stolen items including electronics, wallets, purses, backpacks, stereos, baby clothes and even a wedding dress; some of which may have been originally swiped in the Burien/South King County area.

According to police, a man and woman who are suspected of breaking into more than 100 cars have been busted. Now, they want to return the stolen items to their rightful owners.

The King County Sheriff’s Department announced Tuesday (Jan. 19th) that they have arrested two men they allege had committed numerous “takeover” robberies, including the Jan. 13th one of the Silver Dollar Casino in SeaTac.

The men were alleged to be involved in robberies of casinos, a bank, and a check cashing business in SeaTac, Renton, Shoreline, Lynnwood and Snohomish County.

According to Sgt. John Urquhart, during these takeover robberies, the men would typically wear masks and gloves, as well as often carrying shotguns in each hand. These types of crimes are dramatic, and are considered especially dangerous to victims, witnesses and bystanders.

The two bad guys were arrested Friday morning (Jan. 15th) around 1:45am, after a Shoreline patrol sergeant noticed a suspicious vehicle parked near two casinos on N. 167th. He pulled in behind the car and the driver quickly drove off. A short pursuit ensued until the sergeant used a PIT maneuver and the car was stopped near NE 163rd and Ashworth. The driver took off running and the passenger was taken into custody. The arrested man is 46 years old from Seattle.

The driver initially escaped, but evidence recovered led detectives to believe these two were involved in numerous armed robberies.

After further investigation, the second man was arrested at his home in Edmonds late Friday afternoon. He is 34 years old.

Detectives from at least four jurisdictions were looking for these two armed robbers who “takeover” the business being robbed.

Takeover-style robberies are considered especially dangerous to victims, witnesses, and bystanders. These robbers are considered armed and dangerous!

In some of the robberies one of the suspects carries a shotgun in one hand and a shotgun the other.

Robbery Details: Both robbers wore masks and gloves. A puffy black jacket was worn in several of the robberies. One of the robbers fires his gun into the air during two of the robberies.

Here’s the dates and locations of the robberies:

  • October 26th 1:40pm. Check to Cash in Renton on Rainier Ave South. A shotgun and pistol were displayed.
  • October 29th 3:00pm. Bank of America in Lynnwood along SW 196th. One suspect has guns in both hands, a shotgun and pistol. The other man is armed “only” with a pistol. A shot is fired as they exit the bank.
  • November 13th 6:30am. Goldie’s Casino in Shoreline. Only one suspect inside the casino, armed with a shotgun and pistol. He robs the casino’s cash cage and gets into a waiting vehicle driven by another suspect. A shot is fired as he flees the area.
  • December 2nd 7:00pm. Royal Casino, Snohomish County, along SR99. Lone robber armed with a shotgun and pistol.
  • January 13th 5:00am. Silver Dollar Casino, City of SeaTac along International Blvd. Two suspects, one armed with a shotgun and pistol, the other with a pistol.

In addition, other area robberies may be related but have not yet been linked.

Formal charges are expected later this week.

Here’s surveillance video from Goldie’s Casino of these robbers in action:

King County Public Health announced Monday (Nov. 30th) that it is opening up four free H1N1 vaccine clinics beginning this Saturday, Dec. 5th, then again on Wednesday, Dec. 9th, as a way to provide access to people at highest risk for H1N1 influenza (swine flu) who cannot afford to pay.

The nearest clinics will be in Renton or Federal Way, with 4,000 doses total (distributed to all 4 sites) available on Saturday, Dec. 5th, from 9am to 5pm and 1,000 doses total on Wednesday, Dec. 9th, from Noon to 7pm; here’s the list:

  • Renton Public Health Center (3001 NE 4th St., Renton)
  • Federal Way Public Health Center (33431 13th Place S., Federal Way)
  • Columbia Public Health Center (4400 37th Ave S., Seattle)
  • North Public Health Center (10501 Meridian Ave N., Seattle)

Future clinic dates will be scheduled as more vaccine becomes available.

According to a press release:

More H1N1 influenza vaccine continues to arrive every week, and most vaccine is still going to local health care providers for at risk patients. Local pharmacies are also receiving limited ongoing allocations.

“As more vaccine comes into the community, we’re continuing to allocate limited amounts to people without insurance or who can’t afford to pay,” said Dr. David Fleming, Director and Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County. “We encourage people to seek H1N1 vaccine through their health care providers or through pharmacies if they can afford the administrative cost or if insurance covers it.”

An estimated 280,000 people in King County who are at high-risk for complications have already been vaccinated for H1N1 influenza and an additional 90,000 doses of vaccine is on the ground or in the process of being shipped to vaccine providers in the county. Though flu illness seems to have peaked locally, at least temporarily, H1N1 illness continues in the community, and vaccination is the best wait to protect against H1N1 influenza.

On December 5, there will be a total of 4,000 doses of vaccine available across the four sites, and on December 9, there will be 1,000 doses of vaccine. Vaccinations are first come, first served, and no reservations will be taken. If demand is high, people will be given a time later that day to return for a guaranteed vaccination. Once supply is exhausted, people will be told as soon as they arrive.

The ability to pay will be determined on the honor system, and it will be assumed that people getting vaccinated at one of the four clinics cannot afford the administrative cost of H1N1 vaccination.

Most of the vaccine arriving to King County continues to be allocated to health care providers so that they can vaccinate patients who are most at risk, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • People between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
  • People between 25 through 64 years of age with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems
  • Healthcare and emergency workers

People who are recommended to receive H1N1 vaccine should continue to seek it. Vaccine supply is gradually improving each week, and it is expected that eventually there will be enough vaccine in King County for anyone who wants it.

Visit the Public Health H1N1 influenza website at www.kingcounty.gov/health/H1N1 for updates on vaccine availability in the community or call the Flu Hotline at 1-877-903-KING (5464), which is staffed with operators to answer questions from King County residents about H1N1 influenza. Hours of operation with operators are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with special 24-hour nurse line service extended over this weekend for people with flu seeking medical care advice. Recorded information is available 24 hours a day.

Ever wonder why Burien-ites are not seeing as much of Mick and Adrian at their local Burien eatery, Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant (a BTB Advertiser)?

To find out, I spent a few hours with Mick’s Marketing Dirctor Sandy Schmitt. We visited their ‘new’ properties where they’ve been real busy expanding their restaurant business to Renton as well as the Glen Acres Golf Club.

In May of this year they resurrected “Full Throttle” in Renton. It’s now “Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle.” Located on top of Bob Lamphere’s Renton Motorcycles and next to Renton Harley, this location can be called a real, upscale biker bar and restaurant. It’s got “outdoor dining” on a patio that overlooks the sales floor of Renton Motorcycles, and windows that overlook Harley’s service department.

Mick and Adrian not only imported all their Irish Specialities to Renton, but plan to offer pizza on the menu soon. Plus they’ve got lots of sandwiches, sides and appetizers. They offer $1 tacos and $2 beers on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5-8. Regular Happy Hour is Tues-Sun 3-6.

Mick’s sister, Lorraine Torrez, a long-time server/bartender in Burien, has joined Mick and Adrian as a partner in Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle. She’s quite proud of the all-chrome bar and the bar stools that are authentic Harley motorcycle seats.

On Saturdays in Renton, customers will find the cooks firing up the BBQ downstairs from 11-3. Their specialty, hamburgers and hot dogs soaked in Guinness are served up with chips (that’s french fries) for $5 and $4 respectively. There’s also a beer garden for your drinking pleasure.

You’ll find Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle at 3701 E. Valley Road in Renton, and here’s a photos slideshow by Michael Brunk that will transport you there:

Click to View Michael Brunk’s Photo Slideshow

Next on our road trip was Glen Acres Golf Club. “Mick Kelly’s at Glen Acres Golf Club” opened to residents and members on July 1st. Not only do they serve the same great food we all know and love, but also this location will house Mick Kelly’s Catering.

The catering division started about 18 months ago and grew out of “Mick Kelly’s Catering-Boxed Lunches” serving sandwiches and salads to go.

In order to expand their catering division, they hired Chef Richard Maglietto. “Chef Richard’ (to non-Italian speakers) has 45 years’ experience in the kitchen and his personal credits include 24 gold medals in national culinary competitions and he’s a Certified Chef through New York’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America. He also has extensive training in Tornino and Florence, Italy, mastering the art of baking and desserts.

When you and/or your group decide that you require the best in local/regional catering, contact Sandy Schmitt at sandy@mickkellys.com or call 206-244-1177. She and Chef Richard will create custom menus ranging in price from $12-25 per person.

Sandy tells us that no event is too small or too large for them to cater. They recently did an Irish funeral at the Cove for 300 people. They also do weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, retirement parties – you name it, they’ll cater it.

And this brings us back to Glen Acres. The clubhouse was built in 1935 and has long boasted beautiful views of Seattle, our own Emerald City. The main dining room captures this panoramic view. There’s a cozy bar area, another dining room as well as an outdoor patio. There’s room for up to 250 guests for special occasions.

When your book your event and catering with Mick Kelly’s you will have the full use of Glen Acres Golf Club. Golf Party on the Patio? Swimming party at the pool? Wedding on the lawn followed by catered dinner? No problem now that Mick’s and Glen Acres have teamed up for Mick Kelly’s at Glen Acres Golf Club.

But their catering is not limited to Glen Acres. They will deliver meals to any venue you want. Big or small. No service or full service.

So there you have it. Mick and Adrian are still around Burien…around Renton…now around Glen Acres…and at a catered event near you!

WHERE: The Renton Carco Theater, located at 1717 SE Maple Valley Hwy in Renton (map below)

INFO: A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill- tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty And The Beast” and “Aladdin.” Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, “Little Shop Of Horrors” never fails to entertain.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is a story that includes unusual characters, such as a man-eating plant from outer space and a sadistic dentist. The language is mild, and all mature subject matter is dealt with in a humorous, cartoonish manner.

This show is suitable for most audiences and involves cast members as young as 9.

Parental discretion is advised for children under 12.

Seven south King County cities, including Burien, announced Thursday their plans to build a 668-bed misdemeanor jail in neighboring Des Moines.

The cities on board this venture, which is called the South Correctional Entity (or “SCORE,” not to be confused with the small business advisors “SCORE”), include:

  • Burien
  • Des Moines
  • Tukwila
  • SeaTac
  • Federal Way
  • Renton
  • Auburn

SCORE is hoping to open this new jail in mid-2011 to replace jail space that will no longer be provided by the county. The seven cities will team up to handle all operations of the new facility.

From a press release, here’s a quote from SeaTac Mayor Ralph Shape:

“Meeting the public safety needs of our residents while keeping costs down is our number one goal. SCORE meets that need.”

The entity has hired a consulting firm, which proposed that the area will need nearly 700 additional jail cells by 2026, and that cities could reduce costs by working together.

The preferred site for the new jail is near Des Moines Creek Park, on a 14-acre parcel owned by the Port of Seattle located southwest of where South 208th intersects with 18th Ave South (see map below).

Next steps in this project is the permitting process, which will also allow for public comments and review; here’s more info from the SCORE website:

SCORE is currently seeking applicants for the Community Outreach Team.

The Community Outreach Team will work with SCORE to address community concerns and questions.

If you are interested in participating, send your letter of interest to:

SCORE Outreach Team
1055 South Grady Way
Renton, WA 98057

Priority will be given to:

  • Applicants that live in the cities of Des Moines or Tukwila
  • Applicants that live west of 18th Avenue South
  • Applicants that live South of 200th Street
  • Applicants that live north of 216th Street

Questions and Comments can be e-mailed to SCOREjail@rentonwa.gov

A public meeting on this jail is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25th at 8:30am at the Renton City Hall.

So…what are your thoughts on having a new jail in our area?

Notes from Monday night’s Burien City Council meeting (Feb. 9th):

LAKE-TO-SOUND TRAIL
King County Council Chair Julia Patterson and her team presented the 17-mile Lake-To-Sound Trail that would begin in Renton, end at Puget Sound in Des Moines and wind its way through Tukwila, Burien and SeaTac. The proposed trail would connect the Cedar River Trail, Green River Trail, Westside Trail and the Des Moines Creek Trail, making its way along the light rail station in Tukwila and then over to Burien and possibly along Des Moines Memorial Drive.

Voters have already approved a levy that would contribute $705,000 over the next year as well as $3.75 million over the next five years, pledged from the King County Parks expansion levy in 2007. Deputy Mayor Rose Clark said:

“I can’t tell you how long I have wanted a trail in Burien like this one.”

Council Chair Patterson has already made visits to Washington DC asking for measures to be included in upcoming stimulus budgets for the Lake-To-Sound Trail. According to Patterson, DC is listening to any proposals that would open up jobs for local residents and this project would do just that.

Here’s a map of the proposed trail, which starts in Renton and ends in Des Moines:

DISCOVER BURIEN
Executive Director of Discover Burien Patty Sader presented promotional efforts put forth from the Discover Burien team building community awareness for local businesses. Large banners reminding the community to shop local, a restaurant guide brochure, newsletters and welcome wagon bags given to each new business that opens in the Burien community.

Coming up with ideas business and residents alike can do to overcome tough economic times, Sader brought to light the average of 10-12 business that applied for licenses despite the odds. With 147 new business owners in Burien a light of hope and perseverance shines in what could be seen as a dark financial time.

CITY LIGHT PLANNED POWER OUTAGE
The City Council addressed the City Light project that had proposed to shut power off to many businesses along 152nd Monday February 9th for 8 hours in the middle of the day. With a vehement protest from the business along this main stretch of Burien, City Light agreed to move the scheduled power outage to late Thursday February 12th overnight. Power is scheduled to be restored after the electricity to the new city library and city hall building has been installed approximately 6 am.

ANNEXATION UPDATE
On Monday the Seattle City Council voted 8 to 1 against Burien’s memo proposed to split and adopt the North Highline neighborhoods.

Council Member Gordon Shaw said:

“The current proposal will save money in the long run.”

“I think it’s an ideal situation for Burien to finally be in an adversarial position. It’s good for Burien to not have opposition.”

On Friday, Oct. 17th, during a high school football game between Renton High School’s Indians and the Tyee Totems, a brawl broke out at Neudorf Memorial Field in Tukwila.

Renton came into the game at 3-3 while Tyee came in winless.

After the game they both walked out with a postponed game.

Five minutes before the end of the first half Renton was leading 19-0, and it looked like Tyee was going to get another one in their loss column and Renton would get the win.

But when a hard tackle turned into a shoving match, all play was halted. The shoving escalated and turned into a fist fight. After everything was broken up the officials decided to postpone the game and both teams had to forfeit.

No player can discuss the brawl or answer any questions about it to the public. So after the brawl that was started by a couple of player’s emotions, both team’s seasons are in doubt. Many think that both teams will miss just one game, but there are rumors that the teams could be suspended for the rest of the season. Before the game Renton had playoff hopes, and now they have little or no hope of making the playoffs.

This is obviously very damaging to both teams, and we will just have to wait and see how this turns out.

The Seattle Times did a story on this incident, and below are two videos we found on Youtube that appear to have been shot just after the fight ended:

The John F. Kennedy High School Lancers take on Renton’s Lindbergh Eagles tonight at 7pm at Highline Stadium.

Kennedy is playing well this year, and has beat Lindbergh 21 consecutive times.

Lindbergh (5-1 overall, 5-0 league) is looking to end that streak tonight as they take on Burien’s sixth-ranked Lancers (5-1, 5-0) in a game that likely will decide the Seamount League championship.

The games haven’t been close since 1997, when Kennedy squeaked by with a 28-27 win. The Lancers won 49-14 last year.

Kennedy has a very strong running game, thanks mostly to Tre Watson, who averages 16.1 yards per carry and 171.5 per game. He has 21 TDs, 16 rushing.

The Seattle P-I reports that a 59-year old Burien woman was killed Saturday night after being struck by an SUV near Renton.

The accident occurred just before 9pm on SR-169 near 196th Avenue Southeast, which is between Renton and Maple Valley.

The driver of the SUV is a 52-year old Lynnwood woman.

No identity has been released, and the case remains under investigation.
