We're proud to announce another addition to our upcoming Launch Party for SoKing Internet Radio – there will be a second live performance from a Burien native – King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg and his band the 'Treehouse Dreamers'...

Burien native Dan Satterberg will prosecute play live at our Launch Party!

We’re proud to announce another addition to our upcoming Launch Party for SoKing Internet Radio – there will be a second live performance from a Burien native – King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg and his band the ‘Treehouse Dreamers‘!

Satterberg and his bandmate Rusty Fallis will perform two songs live after opening act Jordan Biggs plays, sometime between 6:20 – 6:45 p.m. in the theater. Be sure to get there early though (5/5:30 p.m.-ish) as we’re certain the joint will be packed. The event is FREE and open to the public; the Tin Theater is located at 923 SW 152nd in Olde Burien.

If you can’t attend though don’t fret – just bookmark sokinginternetradio.com and click on the “Listen Now” button around 6 p.m. Wed. Feb. 15th; if the stream is silent don’t worry, be patient and keep listening – we’re planning on pushing magical buttons and broadcasting live as close to 6 p.m. as we can!

The Prosecutor/Rocker was born and raised in the Burien/Normandy Park area, went to Highline High School in the 70s, then graduated from the UW before going on to become King County Prosecutor. On the side Dan is involved with two bands – Treehouse Dreamers, with all original music, and a cover band called The Approximations.

Satterberg will be the second local musician playing at our party, which we believe is a fitting way to launch! SoKing Internet Radio will be (far as we know) the first Internet Radio Station tied into a network of local blogs in the Northwest (perhaps the entire US), with a mission of promoting and showcasing local music from the region, with heavy emphasis on tracks from the South King County area. We plan on playing a lot of Treehouse Dreamers, along with many other local bands, musicians and songwriters from many different genres. If you’ve got some music you’d like us to consider, please email music@sokinginternetradio.com!

Here’s a video of Dan playing bass and singing “Played Before” with his band at Mick Kelly’s in 2008:

We’re proud to announce an exciting new feature to our upcoming Launch Party for SoKing Internet Radio (to be held at the Tin Theater from 5:30-7pm Wed., Feb. 15) – a special live performance from Burien native Jordan Biggs and his band!

Biggs will perform the first songs officially aired on our innovative new radio station live, just after 6 p.m. in the theater, so be sure to get there before then (it’s FREE and open to all but we think it could get packed so show up early, say around 5-5:30 p.m.!).

Born at Highline Hospital and raised in the Burien area, Biggs has been playing music and singing since he could walk and talk. He attended Seahurst Elementary School, Sylvester Middle School, and graduated from Highline High School.

The first 100 people to show up at our Launch Party will receive this groovy SoKing Internet Radio oval car sticker!

We think it’s only fitting to kick off our innovative new locally-driven station with a local talent like Biggs, who writes all his own songs, and recently recorded several with a well-known Producer named Lewis Richards, at 17th Street Records in Costa Mesa, CA.

“I’m big into family, friends, and enjoying life,” Biggs said. “My daughter is the light in the darkness that I call my world. My music speaks for itself. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy making it.”

To give you a taste of what kind of music to expect at our party, here’s a video of Biggs doing “Once Again” featuring Kat Nestel (learn more about Biggs here):

The radio station will “go live” on the air in the theater at 6 p.m. sharp, so please arrive before then for the best seats – we’ll all gather around a computer, say a few words, perhaps do some weird chanting, then click a button and the station will magically come alive.

And we’re proud to announce that we’ll be featuring a local musician that you’ll hear on the station as our first “live” show – details to come so stay tuned!

All Readers and Advertisers are invited to this free event, which should be fun as well as historic, seeing that (far as we know), we’ll be the first local blog in the entire northwest (perhaps the US) to have its own radio station.

If you’re a local band/musician and want to be featured on our new station, please email music@sokinginternetradio.com. Attach any MP3s, or include a link to any online (we’ll also accept CDs – see our station’s Contact page for our snailmail address), with metadata on your songs, bio info, artwork and anything else you think we can use to help promote you.

And as we get closer to launching we’ll post clear instructions on how you can listen to this new station, which will feature local music, news, events and more!

SAVE THE DATE: On Wednesday night, Feb. 15th, we’ll be holding a special launch party for SoKing Internet Radio, our new, locally-driven radio station, rockin’ the Tin Theater in Olde Burien from 5:30-7 p.m.!

The radio station will “go live” on the air in the theater at 6 p.m. sharp, so please arrive before then for the best experience – we’ll all gather around a computer, say a few words, acknowledge some peeps, perhaps do some weird chanting, then click a button and the station will magically come alive.

All our Readers and Advertisers are invited to this free event, which should be a blast – we’ve been working hard behind-the-scenes building this new media venture, setting up servers, learning new software, collecting and programming local music and beta testing the stream. So far everything’s working great, so we think it’s time to actually go live!

Some interesting anecdotes about this project:

Far as we know, we’ll be the first local blog in the Northwest (perhaps the entire U.S.?) to have its own internet radio station! We’re doing this for a variety of reasons – because we love music, because we want to help local musician types, because nobody else is really doing it right, because we think it’s a great community service, and because it’s really flippin’ COOL to run your own radio station!!

It’ll be available over the internet only, which means you can only listen to it through your computer, phone or mobile device. However, this also means that anyone anywhere in the world can listen. And just you wait – there will be a day not too far from now that you’ll have wi-fi internet in your car!

It will feature all local music from area bands, musicians and songwriters like:

Carly Henley, a 20-year old local singer/songwriter who passed away in 2010:

Sly Mr. Y, a pop-influenced power singer aka Chris Yates

Beau Robinson, another local songwriter/singer

Classic northwest 80s music from The Heaters, The Cowboys (R.I.P. Ian Fisher), The Eagertones and even one of Scott’s personal faves – the late great Billy Rancher and the Unreal Gods (now out of print)!

And there’s much much more, with new tracks being added every day!

We’ll also feature regular “shows,” but when we launch it will be a mix of just great local music.

We’re going to tie our six local blogs into it as well, so we’ll feature local news from our sites, and we’ll also feature local music on our blogs. That’s what the big media boys like to call synergy.

The station will be fully ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/Soundexchange licensed through Streamlicensing.com, which means that we’ll be paying out royalties to affiliated artists.

Listeners will be able to rate songs as they listen to them. We’ll also have a Top 20 chart of the highest-rated songs.

We’ll do occasional newscasts, mostly when news warrants it. We’ll also do fun stuff like play computer-voiced versions of the best Comments from our blogs, just because we think that’d be a pretty fun thing to hear.

We are planning on doing a Kickstarter fundraiser campaign to help us build a small radio studio in Burien where we can do interviews and perhaps even record live music. If you’ve got some spare audio studio gear to donate, or know where we can get some, please email us!

This project was the brainchild of Publisher Scott Schaefer, who, upon seeing several great local bands at Burien’s Wild Strawberry Festival, thought that the area could use a “truly local” radio station that showcases local talent. He then ran this past his resident tech guru, who foolishly said “sure, sounds fun…why not…?”

The station would not exist if it wasn’t for the expertise of said guru – Michael Brunk – who has spent countless hours setting up things, learning software, finding music and helping program it!

Another shout-out is in order for biz partners Todd Christensen and Wendy Quesinberry of design firm Quesinberry & Associates, for designing the logo and helping find music.

And even more shout-outs to the rest of our team, all of whom you’ll soon hear “on the air”:

Joy Steele, Columnist/Sales Manager

Ralph Nichols, Senior Writer

Jack Mayne, Associate Publisher

Mark Neuman, Writer/Sales

Bryan Charles, Intern Animator

12/28/11 UPDATE: We have decided to change the name of our new Internet Radio Station to ‘SoKing Internet Radio,’ so we can better serve all six of our local blogs in the South King County Area.

More details soon…so stay tuned!

PREVIOUSLY: South King Media, the parent company of six local blogs, including The B-Town (Burien) Blog, announced to a full house at its annual Holiday Party Wednesday night (Dec. 14) that it will roll out something no other local blog in the northwest has – an Internet Radio Station.

“We’re extremely excited to be the first local blog in the region to offer this feature,” said Founder/Publisher Scott Schaefer. “After four years of growing into what the Society of Professional Journalists honored as ‘Best Hyperlocal Website’ in the northwest, we think this will be a great new addition.”

Initially focused on local indie music, interviews and live recordings for flagship site The B-Town Blog, eventually a different radio station will be developed for each of South King Media’s five other blogs, including Des Moines, White Center, Normandy Park, SeaTac and Tukwila.

Stations will feature local music, news from the blogs, event listings, weekly shows, journalist roundtable discussions, free Public Service Announcements for local non-profits, original content like a weekly Open Mic and much more; and eventually – live streaming from local events.

“Just take what we’re doing online, add local music and move it to radio,” Schaefer explained. “We’ll be the first Hyperlocal Radio Station in the northwest.”

Each station will be Advertiser-supported, and South King Media is seeking Charter Advertisers now – just email Sales Manager Joy Steele at joy@southkingmedia.com for special introductory rates and hop on board the next local media revolution.

“Of course, a venture like this can’t happen without a good team,” Schaefer said. “And we’re actively looking for on-air hosts, bands, show ideas, and especially Sales Reps.”

The current team behind South King Media, in addition to Schaefer, includes:

Michael Brunk, Photographer/Code Guru

Ralph Nichols, Senior Writer

Jack Mayne, Associate Publisher/Writer

Mark Neuman, Writer/Sales/Host

Joy Steele, Sales Manager/Writer

Greg Wright, Editor/Writer, The SeaTac Blog

Bryan Charles, Intern Animator Extraordinaire

If you’re a musician or know any local bands with recordings, or want to join this growing team in this exciting new enterprise, please contact Schaefer directly at scott@southkingmedia.com.

Here’s more info from a press release Schaefer submitted to himself to publish:

In addition to being a former journalist, Schaefer won three National Emmy Awards for Writing on the hit edutainment series ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’ for PBS/Disney. He has over 25 years’ experience in media, including six years in Hollywood, and two years as Music Director for KEWC, his college radio station at Eastern Washington University.

“One of my biggest joys during my college years was programming and hosting original radio shows,” Schaefer said. “And now I can’t wait to get back on the air and entertain and inform, only from a truly local perspective.”

B-Town Blog Radio will be the first Burien-based entertaining radio station since KQIN, once located at 800 AM, which went on the air in October, 1970. The City of Burien currently operates a low-watt informational station at 540 AM, but that can’t be heard more than a few blocks away.

“Terrestrial radio is going the way of newspapers and dinosaurs,” Schaefer added. “Since I started The B-Town Blog in 2007 I have believed that the internet is the future for all media, and I think that within just a few years most of us will even be receiving wi-fi in our cars.”

Schaefer bases his radio predictions on a September 2011 study by iSuppli.com, which states that “sales of cars with Internet radio integrated into their head unit will soar to 24 million units in 2018, up from 168,000 in 2010” – a +14,186 percent increase.

“Of course, the true measure of any successful media is the content, and we’re totally committed to delivering great original radio programming 24/7,” Schaefer said. “And we’re also looking for local bands, on-air hosts, show ideas, Sales Reps and more.”

Schaefer hopes to premiere the station sometime in January, 2012, so stay tuned…

A local painter/contractor is now producing podcasts on ‘healthy painting,’ and as far as we can tell, he may be the first Podcaster in the Burien area.

Darryl Whalen, Owner/President of Healthy Painting, LLC, a licensed painting contractor since the late 70s, has produced three podcasts so far, all focused on “healthy painting.”

“I have been listening to numerous podcasts throughout each week, for the past several years,” Darryl said. “When I began to do some research and was able to validate the viability of my doing my own podcast, it began to grow wings.”

Darryl’s podcasts can be heard at his website/blog: http://healthyhomecast.blogspot.com. To listen to his latest one, click here.

“On the podcast, we offer useful information about eco-related products, practices, organizations and groups focused on environmental consciousness & responsibility as well as the general health, happiness, safety and well being of everyone and everything we all share,” he added.

Here’s a Q & A interview we conducted with Darryl between his painting and podcasting gigs:

Q: Why did you decide to do a Podcast?
A: I have been a licensed painting contractor since the late 1970’s. Approximately 4½ years ago I transitioned into changing the name of my company and its focus to that of “healthy painting”. I have since taken trainings through The National Center for Healthy Housing, The American Lung Association and am presently enrolled in training through The Master Builders Green Build program and The NW Eco Building Guild. I was looking for the easiest way to share all I have learned (and continue to) in the area of acting responsible towards ourselves and towards all of the other people, animals, nature and natural resources on our planet.

Q: What inspired you?
A: The source of my inspiration has come from all of the individuals, groups, organizations and companies that have worked to teach about, create and support alternatives to the things that we have been using and doing that perhaps are the not the best or the most responsible choices. I’ve been a record collector since the mid 70’s, a musician & events entertainer since the early 80’s and was a college radio DJ in the late 90’s. I have been listening to numerous podcasts throughout each week, for the past several years. When I began to do some research and was able to validate the viability of my doing my own podcast, it began to grow wings.

Q: How difficult is it to produce?
A: It can be fairly easy to do and the equipment is fairly inexpensive, yet the answer depends entirely on the abilities and resources of each individual. There are people that have thrown together some pretty darn good podcasts, fairly quickly. A few of the key elements are figuring out all the technical audio requirements and learning how to utilize all that is available in the social media/marketing side of things, and then implementing it all. We are learning. Slowly! If I had not taken the initiative to seek out people that had knowledge and experience about how to do this, and had I not been blessed with great people like my friend Tony, who pretty much records, engineers & mixes these things, and my friend Lilly who posts each episode; it may not be happening at all. We continue to learn about and implement many details that are still missing, yet we are doing it and I really love it!?

Q: What is the topic?
A: Basically, HEALTHY HOMECAST is your resource for “greener living”. On the podcast, we offer useful information about eco-related products, practices, organizations and groups focused on environmental consciousness & responsibility as well as the general health, happiness, safety and well being of everyone and everything we all share.

Q: How often will it come out?
A: We have put up 3 episodes so far, and each episode gets put together a bit quicker than the last and seem to be getting a bit better each time. Originally we had committed to at least twice per month, yet we eventually want to put up one episode around the same day and time each week, in order to create and maintain consistency.

We are seeking guests such as licensed contractors, material & supply manufacturers & vendors, lawn & garden experts, general home cleaners, specialty surface cleaners, farmers, restaurateurs, childcare and personal assistance providers, activists, artists, musicians, alternative energy & transportation experts, waste management & recycling experts, scientists and doctors. They will be interviewed with a list of questions we created, to determine if we would be a good match for each other.

Q: Where can people listen to it?
A: People can go directly to the link on the site that archives the podcast episodes here:

http://healthyhomecast.blogspot.com/search/label/episode

Or they can scroll through the main site and find them placed within the other news, events and informational posts here:

http://healthyhomecast.blogspot.com/

Q: Any interesting anecdotes about producing a Podcast?
A: We have never done anything like this before. The trial and error approach to the entire undertaking creates an atmosphere of confusion and silliness, and requires a good sense of humor.

Q: Anything else?
A: First of all, thank you very much for this opportunity. We love Burien and the Burien Blog. We are pretty much running this thing on our own and are a non-profit endeavor at this point, yet if anyone wants to sponsor the podcasts, we would not be resistant. If anyone is really great with engineering, social media, mp3 player imbedding, iTunes, feed burner, etc…, we welcome any input or support. If anyone in Burien is willing to provide a neat little space for us to record the episodes for a few hours per week; please let us know.

We would like people to know that we are available for educational presentations or consultations, and can be contacted by either checking out our business website: http://www.healthypainting.com.

Or by emailing: info@healthypainting.com.

Or by texting or calling: 206.650.4587.

Stop by Tellit Productions in downtown Burien and you might recognize co-owner Bill Reid’s voice before you recognize his face. Take a listen to this 2003 clip:

KNDD Daily Debate with Bill Reid

The above clip is from Bill’s work as a DJ at Seattle’s KNDD 107.7, The End radio. Longtime Seattleites may have also caught Bill’s shows on CBS Radio/JACK-FM, KISW, and KZOK/KJET, and if you ever hung out in San Francisco in the early 90s, he even spent time on “Live 105.” A Seattle native, Bill spent much of his broadcasting career right here in his hometown.

Talk with Bill for a while and he might share stories like this one:

“I once almost got beat up by the Indigo Girls,” he said.

The Indigo Girls had stopped by KNDD studios to play songs from their new album, and Bill wasn’t as familiar with their music as they’d hoped. When the pair began accepting song requests by phone, Bill half-jokingly asked if they could play Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” a song miles away from their folky-pop style. The Indigo Girls were not amused. “I thought when she stood up to leave that she was going to hit me,” Bill said.

Bill had better luck interviewing the iconic Eddie Vedder, who he describes as “a great guy.” Bill says the Pearl Jam singer was humble and surprisingly sensitive about his ability to fit into Seattle culture as a relative newcomer. Listen to Bill’s interview with a young, weary Eddie Vedder, who was in the middle of the 1992 Lollapalooza tour, here.

Bill Reid interview Eddie Vedder

Bill met many of Seattle’s rising grunge stars, such as Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, during his radio career.

Bill lets Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell take the wheel at KNDD.

After playing thousands of songs in his 25-year career, what’s the one song he never wants to hear again? “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana! It was overplayed,” Bill said. Today, Bill no longer works in radio, though he says, “it was quite a ride.”

Bill now brings his relentless curiosity and people-love to his current gig at Tellit Productions in Burien. Bill and business partner (and brother) David Leaming channel their passion for storytelling into their current work: creating videos. Tellit Productions creates video for the new social media, such as Facebook and MySpace. They also develop training videos and biographies, working with everyone from corporate clients like SeaTac Park.com to older—or even younger–folks who’d like to leave a legacy of memories via a personal biography video. Bill loves the opportunities in his new venture, which he finds are both meaningful and cutting-edge.

Here’s a sample video of their work for SeaTac Parking, a spot-on parody of the infamous Steve Ballmer “Developers” video:
