“CHICAGO has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping-song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen,” reads a press release – click here for more info.

If you haven’t seen the Oscar-winning movie in a while, or have yet to see the stage version, here’s a synopsis:

In the mid-’20s, Roxie Hart is a small-time chorus dancer married to a well-meaning dunderhead named Amos. Roxie is having an affair on the side with Fred Casley, a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that his promises are empty, she becomes enraged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly, a vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister until Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron “Mama” Morton hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn, Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. Roxie is just shrewd enough to realize that her poor fortune could also bring her fame, so she convinces Amos to also hire Flynn. Soon Flynn is splashing Roxie’s story — or, more accurately, a highly melodramatic revision of Roxie’s story — all over the press, and Roxy and Velma are soon battling neck-to-neck over who can win greater fame through the headlines.

We’re huge fans of the Hi-Liners, as we’ve seen them perform both on stage (read a review here) and at the Three Tree Point Fireworks Fund Donor’s Party, where they rocked the house by acting as screaming fans as guests entered on a red carpet (some say this was the best party that ‘hood has ever seen). This is a group chock full of youthful talent and energy, so we’re sure this is going to be an excellent production.

Our friends at Burien Little Theatre want our Readers to know that, in addition to the continuing run of “Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis” (read our Review here) they will be staging a FREE Reading of the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” this Saturday, Dec. 11th, at 2pm.

This production, which will be presented at BLT’s theater, located at 4th Ave SW at SW 146th, is directed by Rochelle Flynn, who sent out the following email reminder:

Hello All-

Yes I know it’s last minute but my life has been pretty tumultuous lately to say the least so……

I’m enclosing this promo for the show I’m directing for Burien Little Theatre.

Coming this holiday season:

“A Christmas Story.” Yes, you could rent the favorite holiday film, or you could go see the new musical version at the Fifth Avenue Theatre for a whole lot of money. But I hope you might prefer to see a FREE production with LIVE actors doing a staged reading/radio play version based on the 1983 comedy classic film. You will see actors at vintage microphones (fake ones built by my husband but nice looking!) and watch how sound effects are produced for live radio shows (I do the sound effects also). ”A Christmas Story” is based on the film, which has become a much-loved seasonal comedy classic about a leg lamp and an official Red Ryder BB gun. We are doing a FREE performance this Saturday, Dec 11, at 2 pm. Come get into the holiday spirit with us at Burien Little Theatre, 4th Avenue Southwest at Southwest 146th.

Did I mention it is FREE?! No reservations needed! Just come on over to the theatre. It is family entertainment suitable for all ages.

Hope to see you there!

Love & Happy Holidays!
Rochelle

And don’t forget you can help out those in need during the Holiday season by bringing in non-perishable food items to BLT’s Food Drive, which continues at all performances this weekend:

“You can help Transform Burien help others in these tough economic times by bringing nonperishable items for the nonprofit organization’s food bank to ANY performance, including the free readings and performances at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11th.”

For more information, check out BLT’s website here.

Our friends at Burien Little Theatre want to remind our Readers that their latest production, “Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis” opens TONIGHT (Friday, Nov. 26th), and is a perfect way to cap this wild week of snow, overeating and insane shopping.

Curtains rise at 8pm, and tickets are $15-$20 online (order here) and $17-$20 at the box office, with all tickets just $7 on Seven Buck Sunday, November 28th (there are just 22 seats left for this performance).

Here’s more info:

So, tired of the snow? Tired of the cold? Tired of being trapped in your house? The snow and cold are ending just in time! Take off that throw blanket, put down that cup of hot chocolate, get off the sofa and come to Burien Little Theatre this weekend!

There is plenty going on at BLT. Friday night at 8 pm is the much-anticipated opening of “Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis.” This west coast premier, of what is sure to become a Holiday Classic, is directed by the nationally known director, John Vreeke. The only other U.S. city to have seen “Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis” was Washington D.C., at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company.

In Charlotte Jones’ “Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis,” a group of Bolton, England misfits find themselves and love at the Holidays. This quirky, original and heartwarming comedy features a 40-year-old dominatrix about to hang up her whips and handcuffs for good on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany. Add her obsessive-compulsive maid, a singing “Chinese” Elvis, a drink called a “catastrophe,” the arrival of a “dead” daughter, and more for a play whose characters attain redemption via a highly unorthodox route.

BLT has heat and free parking! AND you get to see better live theater. If you haven’t been to a BLT production in the last 5 years, you don’t know what you are missing right in your own backyard. If you have been to a show, you know this is not a show to be missed.

(Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis contains some adult language and suggestive content. The show is suitable for ages 13 and older.)

As a Holiday gift to the audience, Burien Little Theatre will be hosting free, yes free, staged readings of the ever-popular family-friendly comedy “A Christmas Story,” written by Philip Grecian. Performances are at 2 p.m. Saturdays, November 27th and December 11th. (This is BLT second year of presenting this marvelously fun reading. Come see what’s new, and laugh and laugh and laugh.)

In addition, Burien Little Theatre, the Highline Historical Society and 4Culture are co-sponsoring a free, yes another free, performance of Book-It Repertory Theatre’s Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices about the campaign for equal rights for women. Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices, by Shanna Stevenson, will be performed at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 4th at the theater.

Also please don’t forget those in need the Holiday season. BLT is sponsoring a FOOD DRIVE. You can help Transform Burien help others in these tough economic times by bringing nonperishable items for the nonprofit organization’s food bank to ANY performance, including the free performances.

“Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis” will run at Burien Little Theatre from November 26th through December 19th (opening night is November 26th). Tickets are $15-$20 online and $17-$20 at the box office, with all tickets just $7 on Seven Buck Sunday, November 28th (there are just 22 seats left for this performance).

New: Parents can leave their children to be entertained for the evening at Jungle Gym in Burien on Parents’ Night Out December 3 for just $25 per child. Contact Jungle Gym at 206-248-3547 for details.

by Philip Benais

Zombie; Directed By Maggie Larrick: Starring Zacharia Robinson. Written By Bill Connington.

Let me just say this right now; Zombie at Burien Little Theatre is extremely disturbing. I walked in expecting a traditional zombie tale and what I got was a brooding, morose character study of a terrifying serial killer. Everything in this one act play rested on Zachariah Robinson’s performance as Quentin P, the aforementioned sociopath. The level of commitment necessary to undertake such a role must have been monumental and I deeply respect Mr. Robinson for turning out a performance that had eerie echoes of Arthur Gary Bishop if played by Daniel Day Lewis, and a higher compliment I don’t believe is possible.

The story of Zombie follows convicted child molester Quentin P, as he describes to the audience his demented attempts to make a ‘zombie’, that is a love slave that would obey his every command. He accounts every part of what led up to him being the murderer he became, including bullying at school, exclusion, loneliness and ultimately a twisted revelation that he needed to lobotomize young children in order to be his companion. Through gruesome detail, we learn everything. No expense is spared for decencies sake or political correctness; this is as close to a serial killer as a theatrical production I’ve seen has come to, and through the veneer I had of disgust and horror, somewhere I knew that I was watching a master at work.

Indeed, Zombie has more suspense and frights than most big budget horror films these days because of one factor; tension. When you see Zombie, the tension in the room is palpable, especially during Quentin P’s crazier bits. Even if the writing can be a little repetitious at times, all those minor complaints are made up by the fact that Zachariah Robinson’s performance will have you on the edge of your seat. This isn’t a one dimensional monster we’re talking about; Quentin P. is a seriously disturbed man who at times even tries to reason with the audience that he’s not the sadist we think him to be, but simply misunderstood. It’s downright brilliant, and everyone involved should give themselves a pat on the back knowing that they managed to scare even this tough as nails reviewer.

By now, you’ll have guessed that you absolutely MUST see this play before it ends. If you want a wonderful if at times faulted script coupled with a breathtaking performance, accept no substitute and pay your respects to this wonderful production.

Tickets are just $10, and can be purchased online here.

There are only two performances left, so you’d better act fast:

Friday, Oct. 29th: 10:30pm

Saturday, Oct. 30th: 10:30pm

Stop by Tellit Productions in downtown Burien and you might recognize co-owner Bill Reid’s voice before you recognize his face. Take a listen to this 2003 clip:

KNDD Daily Debate with Bill Reid

The above clip is from Bill’s work as a DJ at Seattle’s KNDD 107.7, The End radio. Longtime Seattleites may have also caught Bill’s shows on CBS Radio/JACK-FM, KISW, and KZOK/KJET, and if you ever hung out in San Francisco in the early 90s, he even spent time on “Live 105.” A Seattle native, Bill spent much of his broadcasting career right here in his hometown.

Talk with Bill for a while and he might share stories like this one:

“I once almost got beat up by the Indigo Girls,” he said.

The Indigo Girls had stopped by KNDD studios to play songs from their new album, and Bill wasn’t as familiar with their music as they’d hoped. When the pair began accepting song requests by phone, Bill half-jokingly asked if they could play Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” a song miles away from their folky-pop style. The Indigo Girls were not amused. “I thought when she stood up to leave that she was going to hit me,” Bill said.

Bill had better luck interviewing the iconic Eddie Vedder, who he describes as “a great guy.” Bill says the Pearl Jam singer was humble and surprisingly sensitive about his ability to fit into Seattle culture as a relative newcomer. Listen to Bill’s interview with a young, weary Eddie Vedder, who was in the middle of the 1992 Lollapalooza tour, here.

Bill Reid interview Eddie Vedder

Bill met many of Seattle’s rising grunge stars, such as Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, during his radio career.

Bill lets Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell take the wheel at KNDD.

After playing thousands of songs in his 25-year career, what’s the one song he never wants to hear again? “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana! It was overplayed,” Bill said. Today, Bill no longer works in radio, though he says, “it was quite a ride.”

Bill now brings his relentless curiosity and people-love to his current gig at Tellit Productions in Burien. Bill and business partner (and brother) David Leaming channel their passion for storytelling into their current work: creating videos. Tellit Productions creates video for the new social media, such as Facebook and MySpace. They also develop training videos and biographies, working with everyone from corporate clients like SeaTac Park.com to older—or even younger–folks who’d like to leave a legacy of memories via a personal biography video. Bill loves the opportunities in his new venture, which he finds are both meaningful and cutting-edge.

Here’s a sample video of their work for SeaTac Parking, a spot-on parody of the infamous Steve Ballmer “Developers” video:

Special to The B-Town Blog

Burien Little Theatre was pleased to serve as host to the film crew from “Howard From Ohio” last Friday (Aug. 6), making this the second film shoot in Burien in the last 10 days.

“Howard From Ohio” is a film that’s currently in production by Writer, Producer, and Director SJ Chiro, and stars Stacey Plum and John Paulsen. This independent film was in need of a place to call home for a day while they did some daylight filming on B-Town’s 509 freeway.

That’s right, two movies have been shot right here in Burien in under 10 days. The B-Town Blog had a posting last week about the night-time shoot of “Grassroots” (story here). Then “Howard From Ohio” came to Burien on Friday. Two movie shoots in Burien almost back-to-back – this is good for Burien, and BLT is happy to help another arts organization, whenever possible.

When I read the post about “Grassroots,” I thought, Talkies in Burien? What next? Then on Wednesday, BLT got an email from one of its alumni, Maria Wardian (after 30 years, a lot of actors and tech folks have passed through BLT’s doors. BLT has even brought together a number of couples who went on to marry.)

Maria said she was assistant-directing on a short independent film called “Howard From Ohio.” The film was almost done filming. They were trying to find a place in Burien to stage equipment and for craft services/meals for a day of filming some car-driving and car camera mount scenes along the 509. Maria remembered what a great option the theater could be if it was available.

While not too sure if this whole talkie moving picture thing will ever catch on, Burien Little Theatre, the home of better live theater, was happy to help out. BLT’s first show of its 30th season, “Reefer Madness the Musical” was not rehearsing on Friday, so “Howard From Ohio’s” timing could not have been better.

Watching part of the shoot, I finally realized why movie actors spend so much time standing around. All of the tech work that Burien Little Theatre is doing now to get ready for “Reefer the Madness the Musical” is done on the day of the shoot for a movie. And they have to control cameras on top of it all.

If BLT’s experience with the crew and actors from “Howard From Ohio” is any indication, the movie will be great. And who knows, Burien may still become the location of choice for talkies in the Northwest.

Here’s a Photo Slideshow of pics from the shoot day, done by Regan MacStravic and Maria Wardian:

Story and photos by Michael Brunk

It all started with a cryptic e-mail popping up on my cell phone with a time and an address in Burien. And multiple admonishments not to breath a word of it to anyone. Just show up with my camera gear and be ready to shoot. Yeah OK, I can handle that.

Turned out to be an on-set visit to the movie “Grassroots” currently filming in Seattle.

Actors DC Pierson and Jason Biggs sit in the car while the camera shot is lined up

The film is a character-driven comedy that tells the story of the 2001 campaign of Grant Cogswell and his attempt to unseat Seattle City Councilman Richard McIver. Cogswell is livid over McIver’s support for ground-based rail transit and runs on a pro-Monorail platform. A true underdog story.

There are plenty of names you’ll recognize attached to the project. Cogswell is played by Joel David Moore (Dodgeball, Bones) and his opponent McIver by Cedric the Entertainer (Barbershop, The Original Kings of Comedy).

The cast also includes Lauren Ambrose (Law & Order, Six Feet Under), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore, Requiem for a Dream), Tom Arnold (Roseanne, True Lies) and Emily Bergl (Gilmore Girls).

Tonight though, I’m going to photograph the crew preparing for a scene with Jason Biggs (American Pie) who plays Cogswell’s campaign manager and ex-Stranger reporter Phil Campbell and DC Pierson (Mystery Team). The production is making the trek down to Burien to shoot an in-car scene using the city’s relatively quiet late-night streets.

But they’re running late and that’s my first clue that schedules can be a nebulous concept on an independent film production and that I’m way too early. I hang out with location manager Stacia Beer, the sound guy and the film’s intern while we wait for something to happen.

Director Stephen Gyllenhaal speaks with the actors prior to shooting the scene

Maybe 30 minutes go by and it starts to dawn on me that this was just the calm before the storm. Soon people are streaming into the location, actors are being wired with mics and then the battered old Volvo station wagon that will be used for the scene shows up and things kick into high gear.

As soon as the Volvo is backed into position a crowd of technical folks descend on it like a swarm of locusts. Tonight’s scene is going to involve filming the actors in the car while the car is driving through the streets of Burien. They won’t actually be driving the car though, it’s going to be towed behind a truck. And since the car will be moving the lighting for the scene sprouts from the roof of the car like some kind of electric halo. The Red One digital cinema camera is also mounted to the car, hanging off the passenger side door on a rig called a “hostess tray.”

It’s a scene of loosely organized chaos as the car is prepped. Camera, lighting and sound crew are all working at the same time and the actors are sitting in the car being briefed by director Stephen Gyllenhaal (Paris Trout, Waterland, Losing Isaiah).

Finally everything seems to be ready to roll. The actors have gone through a dry run of the scene and a final briefing about who is riding in which vehicle in the convoy is complete. I hastily head out to the nearby street so I can photograph the Volvo as they depart to film.

The Volvo heads out onto the streets of Burien to film the scene

The truck rolls out towing the Volvo, I snap a half a dozen shots as they pass by and then everything is quiet again.

It’s well after midnight now and I’m more than ready to head home and crawl into bed. The production crew isn’t so lucky though, they’ve still got several hours of filming before they’ll call it a night.

As I wearily stumble back to my car, I reflect on my crazy little brush with the movie industry and wonder how many calls the Burien Police Department is going to get about low flying UFOs. Covering local news makes for long days sometimes, but I have to admit that this job is rarely boring.

Here’s a slideshow of photos I shot during my evening with the “Grassroots” crew. It’s set to audio from the 1948 documentary “Let’s Go to the Movies” so check your volume before clicking!

Last summer, we first reported on a documentary being filmed about Burien by some old friends from our days at KING-TV; and yes, mostly because they had four cameras in everyone’s faces (including ours) during several events.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a recent sneak preview of the completed production, which we found to be a well-produced, interesting and entertaining 30-minute film that showcases what’s been going on in this area over the last few years.

Featuring interviews with local dignitaries like founding City Councilmember Sally Nelson, first Mayor Arun Jhaveri, current Mayor Joan McGilton, as well as businesspeople like Dan “The Sausageman” House and many others, this film has very high production values and is a great tribute to our city.

What was once known as “Where We Live Now, Burien” is now called “B-TOWN – How Burien came into its own,” (hmmm…”B-TOWN”? I wonder where they got that idea…?) and here’s a 4:55 preview of the finished product, hosted by former Seattle Times travel editor Terry Tazioli (that’s his mug in the screengrab pic) who has found his true calling:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here’s promo copy from the production company’s website, where you can still donate online to help cover the costs and get your name in the credits as well as a free DVD copy:

What does it take to have the health and resilience to rebound from an economic downturn by putting up art in an unfinished section of your Town Square and throwing a party?

We have completed a half-hour documentary and a 5:00 trailer will soon be available on DVD. It provides a mosaic of stories that illustrate how the leadership and vision of different groups contribute to the well being of the whole.

The documentary tells the City of Burien’s story about what to pay attention to as we struggle to live well . . . right where we live!

It’s a great story — and much needed right now! It is the story of a vision people had for their city and how they made it come true – how, even in hard times, they are still making it come true.

Last year, Burien artists and city officials did something inspired. They created an Interim Art Space in a potential eyesore when the city center was at a standstill. That marked yet another evidence of the buoyancy and changeability of this place. Featured are artists; the Town Square developers and other business people; new arrivals; old timers, and the government officials that help make it all happen.

The Burien stories fulfill and dramatically illustrate German Urban Planner Thomas Sieverts thesis that: Our choices matter; the landscape in which we live now is the result of countless choices; and that much of it now is an in-between space, neither urban nor rural, but a mingling of both.

Through generous donations, we have completed the documentary and a “Trailer” Burien Video Trailer

AND now we need $7500 to pay the people who’ve done the major work.

Donors will receive a copy of the finished product and where possible, be credited in the video.

Please Donate below using the “PayPal” online process “Make Donation” button, AND send an e-Mail to us Burien Video Project providing us with information regarding how you would like your name to appear in the film credits.

The crew behind this production includes many well-known Northwest video folks, such as:

Executive Producer: Anne Stadler, community leadership consultant, formerly KING-TV5 documentaries and specials Producer

Co-Producers and Writers: Terry Tazioli, writer/on-air Host, formerly with The Seattle Times, KING-TV5

Breeders Theater will be holding a general audition for its upcoming summer show, “Withering Heights” at 7pm on Monday, April 19th at E.B. Foote Winery, located at 127-B SW 153rd in Burien.

“Withering Heights” will be a “parody of Victorian proportions. With Bankers.” according to a poster.

From an email press release:

Breeders Theater will have a general audition for its summer show, Withering Heights, 7 p.m., April 19 at E.B. Foote Winery, 127B SW 153rd, Burien.

We are looking for three men and three women, ages 20-30.

Bring resume, head shot, short comic monologue.

Questions: tmsell@aol.com.

According to their website:

Breeders Theater was founded in 1999, with a benefit performance at Highline College in Des Moines. Our first show was Arctic Jack Klondike/Y?2K. We performed again at Highline in 2001, and then later that year convinced our friends at E.B. Foote to take a chance (these should always be very scary words: “I’ve written this play.” Be afraid; be very afraid). Nonetheless, people continue to pay money to come see us. It must be the wine.
