Our friends at Burien Little Theatre want our Readers to know that they’ll be holding auditions for the comedy-drama “reasons to be pretty,” written by Neal LaBute, on Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. with callbacks Wednesday, Dec. 14.

The characters are two men and two women in their early to mid-20s (see full list below).

“This incendiary comedy-drama involving four friends was an Off-Broadway hit that later moved to Broadway as a Tony-nominated Best Play,” reads a press release. “Greg, who adores his girlfriend Steph, is overheard admitting that she is no beauty. When Steph finds out, all hell breaks loose. Best friends Carly and Kent, who are struggling with their marriage, are there to take sides, provide support and light the match on the powder keg of their relationship. As both relationships crumble, the friends are forced to confront deceit, infidelity and betrayed trust in their journey to answer that oh-so-American question, “How much is ‘pretty’ worth?” Contains liberal but appropriate use of profanity.”

“LaBute has exchanged misanthropy for empathy, reaping unexpected dividends … some of the freshest and most illuminating American dialogue to be heard anywhere.” The New York Times

Performances will be at Burien Little Theatre from April 20 through May 13, 2012. Rehearsals begin in March.

Auditions are Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. Callbacks are Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Stage director Zachariah Robinson.

$100 stipend provided.

Please prepare two contrasting short contemporary monologues (serious/comedy) totaling 3 minutes maximum. Bring resume and headshot. Callbacks will consist of cold readings from the script.

Please make audition appointment: audition@burienlittletheatre.org, 206-242-5180. Auditions and callbacks will be held at Burien Little Theatre, 14501 Fourth Ave. S.W. (intersection of Fourth Ave. S.W. and S.W. 146th St.) in Burien.

For directions, go to www.burienlittletheatre.org.

Character Descriptions

Greg – Early to mid-20s. Average guy. Trying to figure out what he wants out of life.

Steph – Early to mid-20s. Girl-next-door type. Not drop-dead gorgeous, not ugly, just a regular everyday girl.

Kent – Early to mid-20s. A guy’s guy. Big into sports, hot girls. A good-looking guy and he knows it.

Carly – Early to mid-20s. Hot girl with an incredible body and a self-righteous attitude.

Burien Little Theatre wants our Readers to know that, as a holiday gift to the audience, they will be hosting free radio-show-style staged readings of the popular family-friendly comedy “A Christmas Story,” written by Philip Grecian at 2 p.m. on two Saturdays – Dec. 3 and Dec. 10.

“A Christmas Story” is based on humorist Jean Shepherd’s very funny memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s. The script is also based on the motion picture of the same name produced by Turner Entertainment Co. in 1983, distributed by Warner Brothers, and written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark.

The story follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case to his mother, his teacher and even the Santa Claus at Goldblatt’s Department Store. The consistent response: ”You’ll shoot your eye out.” All of the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more.

Audience members are encouraged to bringing nonperishable food items for the theater’s food drive. Donated food will go to a local food bank.
Seating is first-come, first-served. Contact the theater in advance to arrange accommodations for wheelchairs and similar issues. For information, go online to www.burienlittletheatre.org or call the ticket office at 206-242-5180.

Here’s the synopsis:

Almost broke, the pathetic Soapbox Theatre Company is having a dickens of a time mounting their annual cash cow, the holiday classic A Christmas Carol. Tiny Tim is a bit too old and big, the Ghost of Jacob Marley keeps getting his chains tangled in the scenery, and there’s an inspector from the National Endowment for the Arts expected any minute.

When an inept new actor is mistaken for the inspector, cast and crew cater to his every whim to try to win government funding. The result? The most hilarious and disastrous production of A Christmas Carol ever. Part Noises Off, part Waiting for Guffman, this show has been a sidesplitting holiday hit ever since it premiered at the Seattle Rep.

Burien Little Theatre presents a world premiere adaptation of the horror story Frankenstein, written by Roxanne Ray and based on the novel by Mary Shelley. This classic horror story is particularly relevant in an age when cloning, nanotechnology and genetically modified organisms are becoming a reality.

Frankenstein is the thrilling horror story of a young scientist’s attempt at playing God and the disastrous results. Appalled by the deformed monster he has created, Victor Frankenstein abandons his innocent, bewildered creation. Rejected in horror by everyone he meets, the Creature becomes increasingly vengeful and bent on finding his creator–to make a ghastly bargain.

The show is suitable for ages 13 and older due to horror content.

Burien Little Theatre’s production of the classic horror “Frankenstein” starts this Friday (Sept. 30th), and The B-Town Blog has an exclusive coupon that will save you $3 on tickets!

Because we know you can’t resist a locally-produced horror done by the great peeps at BLT, here’s the coupon – just click to print it:

And here’s our Big Picture High School Intern Bryan Charles’ review of the play, based on a sneak peek he got at BLT’s 24-hour fundraiser ’9/10/11′:

by Bryan Charles

I recently went to the Burien Little Theatre to view a short section of the 24-hour long run (a fundraiser to benefit the quality of their curtains to keep the building fire safe).

At the theatre, I watched a public rehearsal of the Play interpretation of “Frankenstein.” A few notes I’d like to add are that this play did not contain makeup nor costumes (merely for the fact that it was just a rehearsal) and the script is based off the original Mary Shelley novel, not the Hollywood Movie; the difference is that the novel depicted The Creature as a human being with thoughts and genuine emotions, not a brainless monster.

In terms of reviewing, I must say the actor portraying Dr. Frankenstein (Adrian Cerrato) was very brilliant physically, meaning he showed the physical potential to portray such a character while he was equipped with makeup. But on the other hand, his voice does not show a very commanding lead in it, he seems to be more of a kid compared to Russ Kay, the actor who played The Monster. I did enjoy Adrian’s performance – he pulls off brilliant more than anything, I just couldn’t picture his voice as an evil insane scientist.

The Actor portraying The Creature, Russ, did a slightly better job than Adrian – he was very good reading his lines, you could tell what he was after, he spoke very professionally and with lots of heart, perhaps to a degree of overacting a slight bit, but he did an amazing job none the less. He also looks like the Creature… well in makeup he would, Russ is bald, and he looks very strong, much like a seemingly scary misunderstood creature would look like. On top of that, I find the idea of the monster being portrayed as human, much like the novel was a very good wise and mature decision, and it shows another angle, the actual angle that was meant to be seen, Frankenstein’s creature has heart, he has a very poetic dialect and I hope the script will remain the same as I watch the full thing from September 30th, to October 30th.

Frankenstein will be performed at Burien Little Theatre from Sept. 30 through Oct. 30. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 to $20 online and $17 to $20 at the box office, with all tickets just $7 on Seven Buck Sunday, Oct. 2.

Burien’s Hi-Liners recently performed at the Highline Historical Society’s annual volunteer thank-you dinner at the home of John and Cyndi Upthegrove. They delighted guests with a preview of their upcoming show CHICAGO, which opens Sept. 10th at the Highline Performing Arts Center. Pictured above is Billy Flynn (played by Nick Watson) and his ladies performing “All I Care About Is Love.”

Tickets for the show are available at www.hi-liners.org.

“CHICAGO has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping-song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen,” reads a press release – click here for more info.

If you haven’t seen the Oscar-winning movie in a while, or have yet to see the stage version, here’s a synopsis:

In the mid-’20s, Roxie Hart is a small-time chorus dancer married to a well-meaning dunderhead named Amos. Roxie is having an affair on the side with Fred Casley, a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that his promises are empty, she becomes enraged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly, a vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister until Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron “Mama” Morton hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn, Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. Roxie is just shrewd enough to realize that her poor fortune could also bring her fame, so she convinces Amos to also hire Flynn. Soon Flynn is splashing Roxie’s story — or, more accurately, a highly melodramatic revision of Roxie’s story — all over the press, and Roxy and Velma are soon battling neck-to-neck over who can win greater fame through the headlines.

We’re huge fans of the Hi-Liners, as we’ve seen them perform both on stage (read a review here) and at the Three Tree Point Fireworks Fund Donor’s Party, where they totally rocked the house by acting as screaming fans as guests entered on a red carpet (some say this was the best party 3TP has ever seen). This is a group chock full of youthful talent and energy, so we’re sure this is going to be an excellent production.
