A 90-minute Comedy and Magic Show is coming to BTB Advertiser the Tin Theater starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26.

This special event will feature “Steve the Pretty Good” and the “thinking man’s Hillbilly,” Billy Wayne Davis.

Tickets are $12.95 each for this 21-and-over show, and are available at the Tin Room Bar – but act fast, as the last show like this sold out quickly!

A new business – Phoenix Tea Shop – will be opening soon in Olde Burien, in the space formerly occupied by the ‘You’ve Been Worn’ consignment shop at 902 SW 152nd Street.

The folks behind the new biz include Virginia Wright, and Brett Boynton, local tea aficionados.

“We will be a tea retail shop, not a tea house or cafe-like space,” said Wright via email. “We will have at least one table where people can drink tea in the shop, and we’ll do tastings and sampling with people to help them learn about teas and find what they like.”

They’re aiming to open by the end of this month, and are currently doing some modifications – primarily painting and installing fixtures.

“Our primary goal is to create a comfortable, wonderful store where people can come in, learn, explore, and drink tea with us to discover the teas they really love,” Wright added.

Wright adds on her blog:

A little over a year ago I started a tea company called Phoenix Tea Shop. I worked on sourcing good teas and products during the subsequent months (along with branding and building the websites), and managed to find a lot of great connections and opportunities.

But I never really wanted to tackle this project single-handedly. I wanted someone to work with me to build the business and help define what it would grow into.

A little over a month ago I saw a glimmer of an opportunity when Brett Boynton of Black Dragon Tea Bar announced that after nearly a decade as manager of The Teacup, he was unemployed. So I approached him with the idea of partnering with me in the tea business. We met, we plotted, we schemed – and now I am very pleased to announce that Brett is co-owner of Phoenix Tea.

Mara Culhane poses in the kitchen of the former Danish Bakery, set to re-open as Armoire Chocolat Nov. 1st.

As many of our Readers know, iconic business the Danish Bakery closed its doors for good Oct. 15th, after being in operation in Olde Burien since around 1930 and owned by the Pitzner family since 1967 (read our extensive coverage here).

We happened to check in on the storefront Wednesday (Oct. 26), where we saw the front door wide open and people busily working inside. Of course we just marched right on in, where we met Mara Culhane, daughter of new owner Ellane Culhane-Pirotte.

Mara told us that the bakery will hold a “soft opening” this coming Tuesday, Nov. 1st as Armoire Chocolat, which will offer freshly-baked French pastries, espresso, coffee, sipping chocolate and chocolates made right on the premises.

Mara also bragged about her Mom Ellane, an experienced Pastry Chef and Chocolatier trained in France.

We’re excited about this new business, and we look forward to sampling some of their products very soon.

The 5K race starts at 1:00 p.m. in the heart of Olde Burien and widely circles Lake Burien. Many of Olde Burien’s quaint restaurants and shops will be open for business with drink and event specials.

The Burien Brat Trot was developed in 2009 as a way to gather the community together, Octoberfest style, for an afternoon of exercise followed by a celebration.

In the spirit of community, the Brat Trot also raises critical funds for two local non-profits Safe Kids King County South and Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence. Safe Kids supports injury prevention through education and access by providing needy families with essentials such as car seats and cribs. The Highline Schools Foundation provides community resources to help all Highline Public Schools succeed by supporting classroom innovation, the arts, athletics, college scholarships and many more district programs and needs.

The 5K race begins on 10th widely circling Lake Burien and finishes to cheering crowds on 152nd. In addition there will be a short-course race perfect for kids and adults alike looking for a more leisurely pace and distance.

Prudential returned to their Olde Burien roots, where they began eight years ago.

“It’s good to have Prudential back in Olde Burien,” said Discover Burien Interim Executive Director Nancy Hinthorne. “They are such a vital part of the community.”

That said, Lori Alden, managing broker of PNW, wielded the giant, functional (and yes, sharp) scissors and successfully cut the ribbon without incident (other than to the ribbon, which was cut in half).

Everyone then went inside for complimentary sweets, tours and talks, while the oversized scissors were carefully stowed out of harm’s way.

The new location of the Prudential office is 930 SW 152nd Street in Olde Burien.

Out and about after a full day in our Olde Burien offices, we ran into local Artist Eric Edwards at the Tin Room Bar Thursday night (July 14), and when asked what the heck he was doing in B-Town (we know him from White Center), he told us that he had been hanging some of his art at a new gallery, slated to open this Saturday, July 16th.

The new gallery is located at 827 SW 152nd Street in Olde Burien, in the spot formally occupied by Zizia, which closed in April (read our coverage here), and according to Eric, will be open during this Saturday’s Olde Burien Block Party (more info on the party here).

UPDATE 7/15/11: According to Jimi Lou Steambarge, who’s running the new gallery, it will be called ‘GASSHO GALLERY & CREATIVE HUB.’

“We are still rough around the edges and will evolve over the next few weeks, but the fabulous art of Eric Edwards is in the house!” she said on a Facebook post. “Stop by and check it out while at the Olde Burien block party! We are located next door to the Danish Bakery. GRAND OPENING PARTY – FRIDAY AUGUST 19TH!!! Follow us on Facebook!”

Our incredibly tall Photographer was able to peek through the top of the covered-up door for this exclusive look inside the new Olde Burien art gallery.

If you get out to the Olde Burien Block Party, which runs from Noon – Midnight Saturday, you should drop by and see Eric’s work – he uses found objects, mostly pop culture in nature, some kitschy, some bizarre, but all found; then when it’s all put together by him it’s suddenly incredible art – the kind you have to look at closeup to fully appreciate or understand.

I use pop culture advertising posters torn from buildings so far in Seattle, London, San Francisco, Miami and New York city. I like to use the garish colorful adverts and paper fragments in a painterly way and often the image themselves pull me off in unexpected ways. I really enjoy the spontaneity and sometime frustration of the collage process the losing of some image to some other other image, the juxtaposition of objects, the colors and textures.

I am very influenced by street art, graffiti murals, wheat pastes, tags and stickers. Influences also include Robert Rauschenberg, Max Ernst and Romere Bearden and lately Judith Supine and Michael Anderson.

Sozo Friends, a local organization that partners with not-for-profits who are actively working to provide for the basic needs of others, will be holding a ‘Party with a Purpose’ fundraiser from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 31st at 909 Coffee & Wine Bistro in Olde Burien.

“Join your Sozo friends new and old at the 909 Bistro,” reads a flier. “The 909 will provide free Tapas and every glass of Sozo Wine or Iced Coffee purchased will provide 1-10 meals for our local neighbors who need food. Relax, dress summer casual and enjoy a fun evening of amazing food, wine and friends while we help our neighbors.”
