Community members and local business owners stepped up to raise $1,675 for the completion of Highline Medical Center’s new ER at the “Red Wine & Decadent Dessert” event Wednesday night, Feb. 10th.
This event was the brainchild of local business owners from Mark Restaurant, BTB Advertiser E.B Foote Winery and OptiMark Eye Care. This event allowed attendees to sample some of the great things our community has to offer as well as enjoy an evening among friends.
“We are glad to see such a great turn out, especially in this economy.” said Renee Klein, Executive Director, Highline Medical Center Foundation. “There is really something to be said about the energy in this room and seeing people enjoying themselves. This event speaks to the character and uniqueness of our community to see people come together, showing that this community is truly unlike any other.”
Amongst the warm candlelit setting of the Mark Restaurant, the evening highlighted a raffle drawing for a table full of generous community items including everything from baskets of gardening supplies, a romantic valentine inspired package and art work and more. Guests also were treated to a number of wines from the E.B. Foote Winery and a plate of indulgent sweet treats brought by Mark Restaurant and OptiMark Eye Care.
Originally built to serve 12,000 patients per year, Highline’s Main Campus ER now serves nearly 47,000 –– making it one of the busiest in the state. According to their website:
When a health emergency strikes, you need advanced care. And you need it fast, which is why a new ER is so critical. While we have made significant investments in expert staff and advanced technology over the years, there are simply too few treatment rooms for the number of patients. Ambulances are sometimes diverted to other hospitals farther away, because we simply don’t have enough capacity, according to www. lifedependsonit.org.
“…Highline Medical Center receives no tax support, i.e., we are not publicly funded. Yet, we are a not-for-profit hospital. The new Emergency Room and Patient Care Unit is a $60 million project, most of which is funded through bonds and reserves. But a $10 million capital campaign is needed to help complete the funding. The community has responded, and to date we have raised $5.4 million. But we still need more to reach our goal, and are so thankful for those individuals and businesses who have stepped up!” – Renee Klein
“We are truly grateful for the Mark Restaurant, OptiMark and EB Foote Winery. This was truly all their idea,” added Klein.
In addition to the three businesses that planned the event, many others donated time, products and/or gift certificates, and those businesses include:
- Market Place Salon (BTB Advertiser)
- Levich Agency
- Archery Bistro
- Bison Creek Pizza (BTB Advertiser)
- La Costa
- Purple Café’ & Wine Bar
- Artist Warren Knapp
Here are some photos shot at the event by Gina:
On Thursday morning (Feb. 4th), workers from Seattle-based Western Neon installed a brand spankin’ new neon sign at the soon-to-be-opened Tin Theater in Olde Burien.
Proprietor Dan House was there, along with many of his staff, watching as two workers carefully unloaded the sign from a flatbed truck, hitched it to a crane and hoisted it up into position.
House says that the sign will likely be lit up late this afternoon, so if you’re near the area you might want to drop by and check it out – it’s a classic, new “old looking” neon sign based on the shape and style of the old Burien Beauty Salon sign.
The Tin Theater is still under construction in the spot formerly occupied by the Dan the Sausageman retail store behind what is now The Tin Cellars, with plush chairs and a big screen and assorted audiovisual stuff on order and a projected opening in about two months. Stay tuned to The B-Town Blog for full details.
And if you’re wondering where the classic red “Dan the Sausageman” neon sign has gone, House reassures us that it’s packed away safely in storage.
Publisher/Editor Scott Schaefer was on the scene and he took these pics:

The first is Howard and Marge, which is moving east from their Seahurst location. Owner Robin Dunkle is pleased to be moving to Olde Burien. The Wurst is coming to Burien on Sunday, Oct. 4th folks…are you ready?
By “Wurst” we mean the very unique fundraiser known as the (first-annual) “Brat Trot” 5K run (which you can count down to with our handy-dandy timer over there in the right sidebar…).
As we first reported here on Aug. 3rd, Brat Trot is being “braut” to you by The Tin Room, with help from the good peeps who helped run the Cove to Clover Race back in March (which raised $12K), with proceeds benefiting:
BRET THE BRAT (with Hot Link in the old country)
We were able to obtain an exclusive interview with “Bret the Brat,” who’s become a sort of official mascot of the event, which we present to you below in its unedited entirety (NOTE: Bret speaks with an accent, so it’s best to read this with one in your head):
Q: What is this “Brat Trot” thing anyways?
A: Think of this as gesture of goodwill…the sausage community extending handshake of friendship to nearby humans. Though we are sorry about that sausages will crush humans in the running challenge.
Q: Why Olde Burien?
A: Dan the Sausageman is near the center of the known sausage universe. All sausages want to come here…though most do not come because they can’t walk. And oddly, the ones who do end up here seem so happy, they never leave. Is odd.
Q: Is this a fundraiser?
A: Yes, yes, yes. We want to help smaller human children by helping WestSide Baby and Safe Kids of South King County. Maybe, we are working to help those organizations to care for perhaps, little bratwursts in future as well.
Q: Who the heck are you and why should we care?
A: Why you curse to me? I am a friendly Bratwurst trying to make place of Burien friendly. Humans and sausages we become nice friends, no?
Q: Will you be running?
A: I have been training for this for more than one month, I will be most likely be winning.
Q: What’s this about an oompa band at the finish line?
A: Bratwurst are from Bavaria, so naturally we love the oompah and this band is the best (and is very large). We tried to get German rock band Scorpions but they want more than $500…much, much more…is too bad.
Q: What can runners expect during the race?
A: Please prepare to lose running competition to highly trained running sausages. Other than that, there is much fun for human adults and children. Bratwurst with kraut, beer garden, root beer garden (free food and root beer for kids), floating brat races for the kids and of course dancing sausages. And have whole family take photo with a sausage for your special yuletide greeting cards.
Q: What’s this about a relay race with a hot dog?
A: NO HOT DOGS WILL BE AT MY RACE! The brat-ton is a faux sausage handcrafted from foam rubber. It will be a cherished item passed from down in family of high class. You want more details you go to this webpage! NO MORE SPEAKEN DAS HOT DOGGEN!
Q: Rumor has it that the “Yodeling Dominatrix” may be there as well?
A: Hmmm, is new information to me. Maybe special friend of Sausageman?
Q: Where the heck is this all happening again?
A: Oh for the sake of Der Schlussenfuffel, here’s das mappen – clicken to see larger version:
Q: What is this about a Pub Crawl on Sat., Oct. 3rd, the night before the race?
A: Ah yes, well yes I will be there, and will be allowing you humans to “warm up for race” with me during this fun pre-event. Pick up official crawl bib # ($10) at Tin Room beginning at 6pm, then crawl to at least five of the official crawl stops for “crawl drink and food specials.” At each you are to gather visitation stickers to qualify for door prize drawing to be held at Tin Room at 11pm. Humans asked to dress in traditional German costumes (not just hat mit das feather) or come dressed as a beautiful Bratwurst (even better) and you crawl for free (well, actually you’ve paid with your self respect in the case of the brat suit). Humans asked also please have what you call “designated driver” or taxi take you home, no? Seeking ze further info here.
Q: We understand that you’re in a video. Can we post it?
A: No. Whatever you does, no posting no viewing of video. I sign no release, and whoever watches will pay bigtime und hearen from mein lawyers!
Previously we reported on vandalism at the new Town Square, and before that at Seahurst Park Beach’s new picnic area, and now BTB Contributor Jim Branson sent us these photos of some recent vandalism in Olde Burien, including graffiti and broken tree limbs:

Burien’s annual Farmer’s Market blossoms on 10th Ave SW in Olde Burien (see map below) starting this Thursday, May 7th, then moves to the new Town Square July 2nd.
Sponsored by Prudential Northwest Realty, the market will take place every Thursday through October 15th, from 11am to 6pm, and The B-Town Blog will be there with our own booth, doing live blogging!
New this year, free samples of local eateries’ dishes will join farm-fresh produce and unique handcrafted goods at this weekly outdoor event.
The plan has long been for the farmers market, produced by the Discover Burien Association, to be located in the new Town Square. Originally, the market was located near Burien City Hall. With the move, the market will be close to the new City Hall in Town Square, according to Debra George of Marketing Innovations, the market manager on behalf of the Discover Burien Association.
“Town Square is a great centralized location for market customers,” George said. “And the new library and City Hall will increase foot traffic, which will benefit the vendors.”
The market’s fresh-off-the-vine fruits and vegetables are grown by Washington State farmers, most of them local plus a few from Eastern Washington. George notes that prices are affordable, even for organically-grown produce, and the quality is high since this just-picked bounty comes directly from the farmers with no middlemen or delays.
This year, look for new items like Turkish handmade bread or a Hawaiian Shave Ice and, between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. taste offerings from area restaurants.
Add a shave ice or a piece of fruit from a market vendor to tasty eats from the market’s hotdog cart for a great lunch deal. Enjoy it all at the market’s patio tables while taking the edge off the workday with live music, performed most days. Stop and chat with the B-Town Blog, the market’s official blogger, which will blog live from the market.
Customers who developed relationships with farmers or craftspeople last year will want to know that many of this season’s vendors are returnees, said George.
The market’s Olde Burien site is on 10th Avenue SW between SW 151st Street and SW 152nd Street (map below). In Town Square the market will be situated on 5th Avenue SW off SW 152nd Street.

No, it’s not a cop convention – we’re talking about numerous hand-painted pigs displayed in eight local store front windows!
Glendale Lutheran School students from preschool to sixth grade designed, painted and named all of the sassy swine.
Maps with the home of each hog can be picked up at participating local businesses with a competition to match the location and the name of the pig which can be returned to the school office (located at 13455 2nd Ave SW in Burien) to receive a prize.
An auction will be held at Glendale Lutheran School (map below) on Friday April 24th and Saturday April 25th. Families are welcome to attend the silent auction Friday at 5pm with free admission. Tickets are still available for Saturday’s live auction. Doors will open at 6pm, with dinner to follow at 6:45pm.
For ticket information contact the school office at (206) 244-6085. Please note that Saturday is an adult only event.
Start your pig parade at any of the following locations and don’t forget to ask for a “Which Pigs Are Where Map”:
- Gehl’s Florist
- The Yarn Stash
- Burien Books
- The Danish Bakery
- B-town Scoop
- Dan the Sausage Man

Hundreds of kids and adults hit the streets of Olde Burien on Saturday (Dec. 6th) to celebrate Winterfest ‘08, and here are some photographic highlights:

BTB Advertiser John L. Scott served as Burien's North Pole, where hundreds of children and families had a complimentary picture taken with Santa Claus.

Next door, Robert Simpson-Clark cooked hotdogs with his assistant Olga at Jay Lauris Jewelry.

Everyone seemed to love the horse drawn wagon, leaving from in front of the Danish Bakery and touring west on SW 152nd.
The weatherman cooperated and kept the wet stuff away, making it a fun and festive day for kids of all ages.
Daisy Girl Scouts Troop #41074 will be collecting coats at Burien’s Winterfest on Saturday, Dec. 6th, on the corner of SW 152nd & 9th Ave SW in Olde Burien (see map below) between 10am – 5pm.
All donated coats will go to Hope Christian Fellowship’s “Commuity Closet,” so be sure to check your own closets, find an old unused coat and bring it along with your kids/wallets/purses when you come to Winterfest to shop, do hay rides and see Santa.

Burien’s annual Winterfest is Saturday, Dec. 6th, from 10am-5pm, and this year you can get a chance to win one of 15 Santa Bags stuffed with items from more than 20 local businesses to help kick off the holiday season in style.
Burien’s holiday-bedecked streets will also be filled with carolers, free activities and in-store specials.
Each Santa Bag features a combination lock, and it takes the correct combination to go home with a bag and its contents. Festival-goers will receive possible combinations when they shop at participating businesses. Each combination received can be tried on all 15 Santa Bags to see if it unlocks any of them. No purchase is necessary to get one combination from the Discover Burien information booth.
A hit with youngsters and the young at heart, photos with Santa Claus or his reindeer are scheduled again this year. Santa will fly in from his toy workshop to pose for pictures at John L. Scott Real Estate, 930 SW 152nd St. The reindeer will sail into Goodie Gumdrops around noon and take off again at 4 p.m. Can’t make it to the Dec. 6 photo sessions? Santa will pop back into Goodie Gumdrops for pictures every Wednesday through Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. until Christmas Day. Goodie Gumdrops, the Burien toy and candy store, is located at the corner of SW 152nd St. and Ambaum Blvd. SW.
Save gas, time and money on holiday shopping by taking advantage of Winterfest’s in-store specials and gift-wrapping. Find that unique present at boutique shops that feature such items as European décor, the best in kitchenware, hand-beaded jewelry, cute and comfortable shoes, facials and more.
Warm up with hot treats like cocoa and spiced cider served at various businesses. Or chill out with samples of ice cream at B-Town Scoop, 917 SW 152nd St. Take a break from the activities with a horse and carriage ride from 2 to 5 p.m.

Photos and Story by Janet Grella
You may have noticed that many Burien businesses are lending their storefront windows to students of Highline High School to promote this years’ Homecoming game, parade and dance.
The B-Town Blog caught up with HHS students Kady and Aljiggs late this afternoon as they painted some windows in Olde Burien:
This years’ Homecoming parade will start at 11am on the corner of 4th and SW 153rd (near Vince’s Italian Restaurant) and head to 6th Ave SW (near Sal’s Deli), and then march west on SW 152nd, ending up around 12 Noon in the heart of Olde Burien.
Senior cheerleaders Kady and Aljiggs told BTB that there will be a cheer and drill demonstration in Olde Burien. Expect the Highline High School Marching Band, the cheer and drill squads and a few special surprises.
The Mark Restaurant will be having a breakfast buffet starting at 9am Saturday and going to 2pm; cost is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors & kids.
The Pirates will meet Foster High School at Highline Stadium for the annual homecoming football game on Thursday, Oct. 23rd at 7pm.
‘A Knight with the Stars” annual homecoming dance is this Saturday, Oct. 25th at 8pm.

Samuel Scoville, a future "Burien Idol" winner, sings "Puff the Magic Dragon" at today's final Farmer's Market as Eric "Two Scoops" Moore looks on.
Today’s the final day of the 2008 Burien Farmer’s Market, and you have until 6pm to get down to 10th Ave SW between SW 152nd and SW 151st.
Otherwise, on behalf of the B-Town Blog staff, we’d like to give a huge shout-out to Debra George for all her help in this, our inaugural year at the market, as well as a big thanks to everyone who ever came by our booth.
See ya at next year’s Farmer’s Market!

Mark, Janet and Scott will see y'all at our next big event - our first-ever Halloween Blog Party on Tues. Oct. 28th at The Mark. Details to come, so stay tuned!

Today’s the second-to-last Burien Farmer’s Market, which goes until 6pm, and despite any hints of drizzle or grey clouds, it’s going on as usual on 10th Ave SW at SW 152nd.
Some things you can find today:
- Potted plants for sale, both in the middle aisle and near SW 151st
- Fresh produce from local farms
- Fresh breads and pastries from Forest Fairy Bakery
- Handmade candles
- And of course, the B-Town Blog in our usual booth
The final market is next Thursday, so if you haven’t dropped by yet, come on over – we just looked up outside our tent and saw some blue sky!
Last Saturday night (Sept. 6th) we sponsored an outdoor mini concert/music stage on SW 152nd and 10th Ave SW in Olde Burien at B-Town’s annual Artwalk.
We called it B-Town BlogstockAPalooza, and we had a great turnout (most likely due to the fact that both The Mark and The Tin Room featuring “extended outdoor seating”).
The show featured four bands:
Here’s one of many videos we shot, this one an annotated “Pop-Up Video” styled clip featuring the original song “Oceans” by Lost in the Bamboo, whose founding member Ted Walker was instrumental (pun intended) in helping us line up the bands and get the show done:
More videos coming soon, and be sure to check out our new Music Channel!

As Sat. Sept. 6th approaches, we’re both excited and downright giddy about our very-own B-Town BlogstockAPalooza, a live, outdoor local music stage at Burien’s annual Artwalk that starts at 6pm and rocks on with four bands until 11:30pm/midnight.
To keep our Readers’ music appetites whetted and nicely teased, we’ve been presenting some music and video clips all week of some of the bands that will appear on our stage, located smack dab in the middle of street on SW 152nd at 10th Ave SW (map below), near The Tin Room and The Mark Restaurant (both of which incidentally will be having extended outdoor seating for fans interested in having food or beverages as they watch the show).
The lineup:
6pm: Daybreak
7:15pm: Lost in the Bamboo
9pm: Skwish
10pm: Morris Can Fly
Today’s music tease – the night’s headliner (starting ’round 10pm), Morris Can Fly, with an online mini-concert of songs you’ll be sure to hear Sat. night.
Here’s a bio from the band’s website:
F*cked over by everyone since birth, Steve, Marc and Barry formed a rock band in 1999 called MORRIS CAN FLY.
Totally ignored by their hometown of Seattle, the band has toured relentlessly and built a die-hard following of rock fans that would slit their wrists just to party with the band.
The band’s first CD quietly sold 2,000 copies, largely on the strength of the single “Velvet Jesus”, which received airplay in smaller markets like Canton, Ohio and Spokane, Washington. The band’s second CD, released in January 2006, was recorded at Rick Parishar’s London Bridge studios in Seattle, Washington
MORRIS CAN FLY has received the prestigious ASCAP PLUS award for the last three years running. The American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) gives this award each year to unsigned artists who receive airplay and make significant contributions to their genre of music.
MORRIS CAN FLY has no real management and no agent. It’s just a power trio of guys who play loud and are never happy unless they leave their listeners hot, sweaty and exhausted.
Feel free to contact the band at “bitch@morriscanfly.com”. Say whatever you feel. It’s a free country…
And now, ladies and gentlemen of B-Town, we proudly present a band that’s part 80s power pop, part Red Hot Chili Peppers, with a touch of Cheap Trick’s stage presence and of course the creative original juices of pure B-Town in their blood….Morris Can Fly! We’ve been working hard behind the scenes on this for a while, and are proud to finally be able to make this official announcement:

That’s right folks – Saturday, Sept. 6th, from 6pm on, the B-Town Blog is sponsoring B-Town BlogstockAPaloooza, an outdoor music stage in Olde Burien at the annual Burien Artwalk (aka “Arts A-Glow“).
We’ll be showcasing four local bands in an effort to continually highlight Burien-area talent.
Currently, the schedule is:
6pm: Daybreak
7:15pm: Lost in the Bamboo
9pm: Skwish
10pm: Morris Can Fly
Click on the band names to go to their MySpace pages, which usually include music samples, photos, info and sometimes even videos.
This event will also serve as a kick-off for a brand new feature for the B-Town Blog, so be sure to stay tuned for that announcement soon!
Both The Tin Room Bar and The Mark Restaurant will be offering extended outdoor seating with food and beverages available outside, so this should be a fun evening.
We’ll be teasing you all week with musical samplings of each band, and to start things off in the order they’ll be appearing, here’s a video from Daybreak playing live at the Dubliner in July:

We’re at the Farmer’s Market, and in the alley behind us today are two moving vans, with sweaty people moving big things.
Upon further investigation, we discovered that BTB Advertiser John L. Scott of Burien is moving into their new offices on SW 152nd in Olde Burien.
According to Amy Hyson, JLS will spend the next few days moving in and unpacking, with plans to officially open Tues. Sept. 2nd.
The B-Town Blog would like to welcome its latest Advertiser, a business we personally know well (and frequent often) – 909 Coffee and Wine Bar, located at 909 SW 152nd in Olde Burien!
In fact, we’re such big fans you can find us there practically every morning getting our usual day-starting triple grande super-duper hyper caffeinated mocha fix (they use Caffe Umbria coffee), often along with one of their wonderful handmade scones, all whilst joking around with their great, friendly staff.
909 Coffee and Wine Bar serves coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and of course, great wine as well. When you step inside the 909 you’re almost always greeted by one of their friendly staff, who either seat you at one of their sturdy wood tables, overstuffed leather chairs, outside on the deck (pending weather) or offers you something to go. If you only have time for a quick glass of wine, or are waiting for your table, you’ll find their granite-topped bar area very comfortable.
It’s usually very busy in the mornings, with lots of neighbors and residents enjoying their breakfasts, lattes, espresso or teas (by Luxe Tea). They offer a full breakfast menu, including quiche, crepes and paninnis to more traditional eggs, sausage and toast. Many people bring their work, newspapers, magazines or other readables while enjoying the bustling morning atmosphere.
A great breakfast isn’t the only thing you’ll find at the 909 – they also serve a complete lunch and dinner menu, including gourmet appetizers, fresh salads, hearty entrees and decadent desserts.
But wait, there’s more – every Thursday night, 909 has wine tastings, featuring either a particular winery, region of varietal with several tastes at a very reasonable price. On Friday and Saturday nights, the 909 turns into Olde Burien’s only live music joint, with blues, R&B, jazz, funk and more. 909’s coziness translates into a surprisingly nice venue for live music, and yes, even dancing (just move a few tables and you’ve got a dance floor).
Did we mention that the 909 is a cozy place? Better make reservations to ensure you can get a seat (call 206-243-7909). Don’t get us wrong – you can always just drop in, but you may have to wait a few minutes, especially on a bustling Friday or Saturday night.
Here’s a list of upcoming live Music at 909 Coffee and Wine Bar, which starts around 8:30pm and goes to around 11:30pm:
- Fri. Aug. 22nd – PAUL GREEN Blues Band (Jazz & Blues)
- Fri. Aug. 29th – MIKE GRIFFIN PROJECT (Featuring Mike Griffin-keys, some OTC members & Leah Stillwell-vocals) Performing Smooth Jazz Covers from David Sanborn, Dana Owens, Grover W Jr, George Benson & much more
- Sat. Aug. 30th – RHYTHM SUITE (featuring: Sandy Harvey & Keely Whitney, Performing Old Skool, R&B, Soul, Jazz & Pop)
So, please welcome 909 to the B-Town Blog by clicking on their Ad, checking out their website, and especially dropping in to enjoy their great coffee, food, wine and live music!

Good ol’ B-Town is definitely a party place, or so it seems every summer when SW 152nd gets closed down for not one, but at least two block par-tays, one of which is coming up Sat. Aug. 16th, from Noon-10pm.
That’s right – it’s time for Burien’s annual “Hot August Nite” which will feature:
- Classic Cars (from Noon-5:30pm)
- Elvis (or at least an Elvis impersonator, as exhuming corpses is illegal…)
- Drums
- Live Auction hosted by Steve Tannehill
- Awards
- Music from Jr. Cadillac
- Music from Eric “Two Scoops” Moore
- Much more!
The all-day and into-the-night event will take over SW 152nd between Ambaum and 10th Ave SW in Olde Burien, and yes, the street will be closed off, which is cool ‘cuz you can walk anywhere without the fear of being struck by an errant B-Town driver (unless he/she is moving a classic car then look out…).

The band’s first CD quietly sold 2,000 copies, largely on the strength of the single “Velvet Jesus”, which received airplay in smaller markets like Canton, Ohio and Spokane, Washington.
