The organizers of Sunday’s Cove to Clover 5K fundraiser race for the Highline Area Food Bank want our Readers to know that there’s a “Last Gasp” registration and packet pickup this Saturday, March 13th from 5pm – 8pm at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub in Burien.

This “last gasp” is intended for already-registered runners to get their shiny new race numbers, timing chop and t-shirt (if you registered early enough that is…), as well as for new runners to register and save the $5 race day fee increase.

That’s right – if you haven’t registered, don’t worry – you can do so at this event, and according to their website:

Don’t expect to get a shirt until after our post-race t-shirt order goes in but you can still avoid the $5 race day fee increase.

We don’t order gobs of extra shirts to insure we give every dollar we can to the food bank at the end of the day.

You will walk out with a race # and a timing chip.

Here are the details:

What better way to prepare for the March 14th “Cove to Clover” 5k fundraiser run than by crawling in the fundraiser Pub Crawl on Friday, March 12th, where participants can feel good about going from pub to pub to help benefit the Highline Area Food Bank?

That’s right – there just isn’t a better way, so be sure to mark your calendars for 6pm+ Friday March 12th for what is sure to make a “great excuse for your poor upcoming performance on Snake Hill, with only one day to recover.”

For a $10 donation, you’ll get a commemorative keepsake bib qualifying you for “crawl” specials (our fave is the $1 bag of chips at the Hobnobber!), along with a passport and a map. Your goal will be to collect visitation stamps on your passport from at least five of the 13 official crawl stops (see the list below, which includes specials at each). Your stamped passport will serve as your entry to the door prize drawing @ 11 pm at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub.

And if this Pub Crawl is anything like the now-legendary Brat Trot one from last October, be prepared for one of the best nights in Burien you’ve ever had; just be sure to have a designated driver or a safe way to get home if you plan to imbibe.

Keep in mind also that you need not drink alcohol at every pub – you can just ask to get your passport stamped!

Here are the details:

WHAT: The 2010 Cove to Clover Pub Crawl fundraiser benefiting the Highline Area Food Bank.

WHEN: Friday, March 12th beginning at 6pm.

WHERE: Starts at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub at 6pm, with an 11pm return time for prize drawings.

COST: $10 donation gets you a commemorative, keepsake bib, which you’ll wear proudly as you “crawl” from pub to pub.

All proceeds will benefit the Highline Area Food Bank.

INFO: Here’s info on Andy MacDonald:

Andy MacDonald

Just over three years ago, a torrential storm hit, causing the Cowlitz River near Mt. Rainier to overflow and sweep Highline High ‘05 graduate Andy MacDonald away to a tragic death at age 19.

Andy was hunting elk with his family, and the truck he was in fell into the raging river after the bank gave way underneath it.

He was a popular high-school athlete with a great sense of humor, as well as an aspiring firefighter and a friend with “the best hug in the world.” He played soccer, wrestled, was president of his junior class as well as homecoming king. He was known at Highline as a kid who was kind to all, friends said.

Out of tragedy something good can be born; Andy’s family and close friends set up a scholarship in his name. Each November, in honor of Andy’s birthday and untimely passing a soccer game is held known as the “Boys vs. Girls” game. All of his old teammates and friends come out to play a friendly game, and the public is invited to attend.  Afterwards the team holds a raffle at a local restaurant. This consists of items donated from local business and personal items contributed by Andy’s family.

Last year over 200 people attended the game, which was held at Highline Stadium, and we raised more than $4,500.  All of the money is donated to the scholarship. The Andy MacDonald EMT Scholarship is set up at the Puget Sound Skills center where Andy received his firefighting training. This scholarship will assist future Cadets in the Puget Sound Skills Center Fire Services class to help send them to an Emergency Medical Technician class. This year we anticipate sending four to six Cadets to the EMT class and this will aid in covering lab fees, required equipment, travel expenses, etc. Andy’s passion in life was to help those in need and this is our way of assisting others with the same life goal.

For more information on Andy MacDonald, here’s a link to a Facebook tribute page, chock full of great photos that will soon make those who didn’t know him feel like they actually did.

If you can’t make it to the game, you can also donate directly to:

Allen Bilderback, owner of Platinum Plumbing and husband/father to seven, passed away in early June. As the owner of Platinum Plumbing he was the sole provider for his family, and many people in the Burien community have come together to help support them in their time of loss, including a special fundraiser auction dinner this Friday night (Oct. 2nd) at Glen Acres Golf Course.

The Bilderback family is fighting to get control of their business back, and that’s the main reason for this fundraiser, which is being sponsored by Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub, which has sponsored many fundraisers for worthy causes, including for the family of slain King County Deputy Steve Cox and the displaced survivors of the Tara and Jenny Marie apartment fire in Burien.

But, says co-owner Mick Purdy, this fundraising dinner “may be one of the most worthwhile events we’ve done.”

“The effort beging put in (for the fundraiser) by a lot of community members and friends is remarkbable,” he continued. “If the family gets their business back, they have the means to make it. But the need the community to help them get over the hump.”

“The family is fighting to get the business back. But it is pretty challenging since they are pretty financially strapped.”

Here are the details:

WHAT: Fundraiser Auction dinner party for the Bilderback family

WHEN: Friday night, Oct. 2nd from 7pm to midnight

WHERE: Glen Acres Golf Course, located at 1000 South 112th Street

INFO: A night to remember! Together, we can show support for a wonderful family. As the Bilderback Family grieves the loss of their father and husband, Allen Bilderback, we can make this difficult time a easier by participating in this fundraising dinner. We have a great dinner and fun evening planned with music, raffle, and auction. Reserve a table today!

Please confirm & select your dinner option by Wednesday, Sept. 30th.

Here’s Allen’s obit:

by Mark Neuman

We sat down recently for a talk with King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg.

Dan joked while recollecting his days playing both offense and defense for Highline High School’s football team in the late 1970’s.

“We were a small team, but we were slow.”

The Pirates won, perhaps, four games during the three years Dan was there.

“But really, I have to say that learning to lose and learning to do so with some grace and class is part of learning to live,” he said. “I think I may have learned more by being on a losing team than I would have being on a state championship team.”

Dan went on to the University of Washington for his BA in Political Science and a law degree.

“My favorite professor in law school was the one that scared me the most. His name was Arval Morris, a constitutional law professor. He was an intellectual giant,” Dan said. “I was in awe of him because of his ability to analyze and his depth of knowledge.

“He taught us so much about constitutional law and the rules of criminal law and how the government interacts with its citizens. The contract between government and citizens is the Constitution.

“It’s a fascinating area because we continue to define what we mean by that contract. The Constitution is a living, breathing document in my office because we look at Fourth and Fifth and Sixth Amendment issues every day as we analyze cases.

“I love the law, and I see those years in law school as formative years,” Dan added. “The prosecutor has a significant role in moving law in new directions. A prosecutor can actually direct traffic.”

JUVENILES WITH GUNS
One area where Dan is directing traffic deals with attempting to separate kids from gang activity before they fire a weapon in commission of a crime.

“You would think that when a 16 or 17 year-old youth is caught with a handgun that we would bring to bear all of our resources because this is a giant red flag. ‘We better pay attention to this kid,’” Dan said. “But the truth is that current state law builds in a tolerance where literally nothing happens until (there are) five felony convictions.

“And only then the kid, by law, would go to a Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration facility, let’s say Echo Glen, for a period of time.

“So the message that we send to a kid is that gun possession is not a big deal.”

Dan Satterberg and The State Prosecutors Association want to change that. They are pressing the Washington State Legislature to make changes to the law during the upcoming legislative session such that a juvenile found in illegal possession of a handgun will “get an immediate response from the system. We don’t wait. The kid gets removed from the community and put into Echo Glen,” he said.

“And while there the juvenile can get help with tried and true programs such as Moral Recognition Therapy which helps him understand his options and the potential consequences of his future actions.”

Dan greets one of the courthouse companions.

CANINE COMPANION PROGRAM
Dan spoke about the relatively new Canine Companion Program which involves having a dog in the courthouse to help calm the nerves of those going through the legal process.

“We have a dog in our office. Her name is Ellie, a six year-old Golden Lab. Ellie’s full time job is to come in and lay on the floor and look up at you with doe eyes. She puts kids at ease. We use her with our elder abuse cases as well.

“Once we got Ellie on board we realized this is an essential part of what we need to do to put witnesses and victims at ease. We have a lot of children who come into our office to talk about sexual abuse that happened to them or some scary moment, and when they see the dog all of a sudden everything’s okay. And they want to come back to see Ellie again.

“We even bring the dog up to drug court. Ellie will put her head in the lap of someone who may be heading to prison because they screwed up.

“Ellie doesn’t discriminate. Ellie loves everybody.”

NORM MALENG AND THE JOB OF PROSECUTOR
The duties of King County Prosecutor involve overseeing a staff of about 500, including 220 attorneys. The Office of the Prosecutor has an annual budget of $56 million.

Those duties fell on Dan’s shoulders quite unexpectedly in the spring of 2007 when long time Prosecutor Norm Maleng died suddenly at the age of 68.

Dan was appointed by the King County Council to serve as prosecutor and subsequently won election to serve the remainder of the full term.

“It was a great honor for me to work with Norm Maleng for 17 years. I was just 29-years old when he selected me to be his chief of staff.

“What I learned from Norm was not so much about the law as about life in general. I started with him shortly after he’d lost his daughter in a tragic sledding accident. So he was in many stages of grief and I learned an awful lot about dealing with people in grief.

“One of the things that he taught me was that every one of the thousands of felony cases we deal with involves a human tragedy, a story of someone’s hurt or loss or suffering.

“Norm would always start out a meeting with a homicide victim’s family by reaching out and saying how sorry he was that this happened to their family. He would say ‘Tell me about your son or daughter.’ To make that case and that person alive. The case wasn’t just a file full of papers.

“I try to keep that practice alive. What makes this job so meaningful is the ability to reach out and talk to victims and their families.”

THE FAMILY AND THE BAND
Dan and his wife, Linda, have two children and live in Normandy Park.

When he finds the time, Dan loves rocking out with his pals in their band The Approximations. Here’s info from their website:

Organized by bass player and singer Dan Satterberg (aka the King County Prosecutor), the band includes harmonica player and vocalist Bill Mattocks leader of the Bill Mattocks Band, keyboardist and vocalist Michael Hepburn from the nationally known 80’s R&B group Pleasure; drummer and vocalist Rusty Fallis, guitarist Tom Pratt, guitarist and vocalist John Rankin, percussionist and drummer Fred Staples, vocalists Linda Norman and Michelle Purnell-Hepburn. Tom, Rusty, Dan and John also play and record original songs as the Treehouse Dreamers.  With such a large band and wide array of musical backgrounds, the Approximations are likely to play songs by Smokey Robinson, the Beatles, AC/DC, Savoy Brown, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fleetwood Mac and Kings of Leon all in the same set.

The Approximations have played their full, multi-faceted, danceable rock sets in Seattle venues such as the Showbox, Showbox Sodo, Mountaineers Club, and the Highway 99 Blues Club entertaining for private functions, special occasions, and benefits for the Domestic Violence Coalition, and the American Cancer society among others.

The band’s website is here, and you can view videos of the band in action here.

You can catch The Approximations at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (located at 435 SW 152nd Street in Burien), this Friday night, Sept. 18th:

They had their CD Release Party here on July 2nd, then played at the Tree Tree Point 4th of July party, and now Highline High School grad Trevor Rasmussen’s band, Boomerang Summer, is returning to Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub this Thursday, Sept. 3rd.

Rasmussen attended Sylvester Middle School, graduated from Highline High School and spent the better part of his childhood running around Burien – his mother was a P.E. teacher at Sylvester for 25 years. He moved back to Seattle two years ago after pursuing a full-time music career in Portland, and then L.A. where his dream was cut short when he broke his neck while surfing. After two years of rehab and a complete change of perspective he is now recovered, working fulltime as a publicist in his hometown and part-time as lead singer, saxophonist and songwriter for Boomerang Summer – something he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to do again.

Boomerang Summer consists of three Highline High School grads, including Trevor Rasmussen, Ian McKamey and Ben Johnston.

It’s even more special that he serendipitously connected with Highline High School grads and Burien natives Ian McKamey, guitar, and Ben Johnston, drums, to form the new band over the past year. All three attended HHS, played in the jazz and symphonic band.

On Thursday, Sept. 3rd the band will bring their infectious live show back to Burien’s Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub, which is located at 435 SW 152nd Street.

B-Town Blog Advertiser Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub will be hosting an unusual and fun two-man band called “Two Buck Chuck” from 8pm – 11pm on the last Thursday of every month beginning July 30th (and again Aug. 27th, Sept. 24th & Oct. 29th).

According to our friends at Mick’s:

“There will be no cover charge, and Happy Hour will be from 9-11pm which consists of $2.50 domestic beers and $3.50 import beers. All 13 beers on tap are on special during happy hour. There is also a happy hour food menu which is very inexpensive.”

Two Buck Chuck consists of brothers Ryan and Sean Mefferd, both on acoustic guitar and vocals, focusing on tight vocal harmonies while creating their playlist on the fly, mostly through audience requests or by drawing from their extensive knowledge of past and present radio hits, including the often-hilarious kitschy crap, which when done by these guys, becomes comedy gold (if you don’t believe us, just listen to the MP3s below).

According to their website:

“I personally love to come in when Two Buck Chuck is playing. I thoroughly enjoy the music” — Duke Moscrip, Owner, Duke’s Chowderhouse

For over a dozen years, whether they were band mates or watching one another from the wings, Ryan and Sean have always given each other mutual support and admiration. The Mefferds have each honed their crafts alongside and amongst many of the Northwest’s marquee musicians and producers, be they rock, pop, country, or R&B. In the summer of 2003 the brothers realized their common passion and Two Buck Chuck made their debut.

“Growing up together we were exposed to the same music. Whether we were listening to Boston or R.E.M on our own terms or being force-fed Neil Diamond and John Denver by our parents, we took it all in together. Music has always been in our lives and we continue to take in the Coldplays, Toby Keiths or Jack Johnsons of today with the same kind of appetite and appreciation.” — The Chucks

Two Buck Chuck offers a high-energy alternative where a full band is too much and a DJ is not enough. From Elvis to Britney, ABBA to Zeppelin, their seemingly endless repertoire of familiar songs is ever expanding. Raise a glass and sing along!

Here are some MP3 tracks from the band to whet your appetite (our fave is “Islands In The Stream”:

Ever wonder why Burien-ites are not seeing as much of Mick and Adrian at their local Burien eatery, Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant (a BTB Advertiser)?

To find out, I spent a few hours with Mick’s Marketing Dirctor Sandy Schmitt. We visited their ‘new’ properties where they’ve been real busy expanding their restaurant business to Renton as well as the Glen Acres Golf Club.

In May of this year they resurrected “Full Throttle” in Renton. It’s now “Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle.” Located on top of Bob Lamphere’s Renton Motorcycles and next to Renton Harley, this location can be called a real, upscale biker bar and restaurant. It’s got “outdoor dining” on a patio that overlooks the sales floor of Renton Motorcycles, and windows that overlook Harley’s service department.

Mick and Adrian not only imported all their Irish Specialities to Renton, but plan to offer pizza on the menu soon. Plus they’ve got lots of sandwiches, sides and appetizers. They offer $1 tacos and $2 beers on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5-8. Regular Happy Hour is Tues-Sun 3-6.

Mick’s sister, Lorraine Torrez, a long-time server/bartender in Burien, has joined Mick and Adrian as a partner in Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle. She’s quite proud of the all-chrome bar and the bar stools that are authentic Harley motorcycle seats.

On Saturdays in Renton, customers will find the cooks firing up the BBQ downstairs from 11-3. Their specialty, hamburgers and hot dogs soaked in Guinness are served up with chips (that’s french fries) for $5 and $4 respectively. There’s also a beer garden for your drinking pleasure.

You’ll find Mick Kelly’s at Full Throttle at 3701 E. Valley Road in Renton, and here’s a photos slideshow by Michael Brunk that will transport you there:

Click to View Michael Brunk’s Photo Slideshow

Next on our road trip was Glen Acres Golf Club. “Mick Kelly’s at Glen Acres Golf Club” opened to residents and members on July 1st. Not only do they serve the same great food we all know and love, but also this location will house Mick Kelly’s Catering.

The catering division started about 18 months ago and grew out of “Mick Kelly’s Catering-Boxed Lunches” serving sandwiches and salads to go.

In order to expand their catering division, they hired Chef Richard Maglietto. “Chef Richard’ (to non-Italian speakers) has 45 years’ experience in the kitchen and his personal credits include 24 gold medals in national culinary competitions and he’s a Certified Chef through New York’s prestigious Culinary Institute of America. He also has extensive training in Tornino and Florence, Italy, mastering the art of baking and desserts.

When you and/or your group decide that you require the best in local/regional catering, contact Sandy Schmitt at sandy@mickkellys.com or call 206-244-1177. She and Chef Richard will create custom menus ranging in price from $12-25 per person.

Sandy tells us that no event is too small or too large for them to cater. They recently did an Irish funeral at the Cove for 300 people. They also do weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, retirement parties – you name it, they’ll cater it.

And this brings us back to Glen Acres. The clubhouse was built in 1935 and has long boasted beautiful views of Seattle, our own Emerald City. The main dining room captures this panoramic view. There’s a cozy bar area, another dining room as well as an outdoor patio. There’s room for up to 250 guests for special occasions.

When your book your event and catering with Mick Kelly’s you will have the full use of Glen Acres Golf Club. Golf Party on the Patio? Swimming party at the pool? Wedding on the lawn followed by catered dinner? No problem now that Mick’s and Glen Acres have teamed up for Mick Kelly’s at Glen Acres Golf Club.

But their catering is not limited to Glen Acres. They will deliver meals to any venue you want. Big or small. No service or full service.

So there you have it. Mick and Adrian are still around Burien…around Renton…now around Glen Acres…and at a catered event near you!

Highline High School grad Trevor Rasmussen’s band, Boomerang Summer, is holding a CD release party for their debut EP “Breathe” at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (BTB Advertiser) on Thursday, July 2nd.

Rasmussen attended Sylvester Middle School, graduated from Highline High and spent the better part of his childhood running around Burien – his mother was a P.E. teacher at Sylvester for 25 years.

“I’m as lucky as they come, because I could just as easily be in a very worse situation,“ says Trevor. “We named the band Boomerang Summer, as it represents the way things come back around if you let them. For me, getting a second chance at something like this makes it that much more special.”

He has no delusions of grandeur, however, and he’s not quitting his day job. His band’s debut five-song EP is not flashy, nor does it shoot for that big radio single – it does, however, give a proper introduction to their musical outlook – diverse arrangements, thoughtful songwriting and great playing mixed with a hummable simplicity.

From the smart pop-blues of “Simple” and the lighthearted political swing of “Save” to the blast of saxophones and fast paced Latin sojourns of the title track, “Breathe,” the music moves seamlessly through several genres and styles. And whether it’s the epic Jimi Hendrix style solo that erupts from the “live in the moment” anthem “Say Goodbye” or the hushed melodic questions asked in “The Game,” the EP makes one thing clear – these guys are bringing it back to playing music for music’s sake.

All veterans of the regional musical landscape, Trevor has made sure the group has had one thing in mind since they kicked off their first rehearsal in guitarist Ian McKamey’s leaky basement.

“Let it happen,” he says. “We weren’t worried about the length of the tunes, sticking to a particular style or getting jammed up in trying to fit into a particular genre. The guys put their hearts and souls into the music and took each song to where they thought it wanted to go. Everything else has followed from there.”

From the live show to the record, the synergy of the group has surprised even them.

“We all have arrived from such different places musically,” says Ian McKamey, whose professional music career started at age 15 opening for Pat Travers. “Amazingly, we’re almost always on the same page and somehow, it all works.”

Trevor Rasmussen is a Burien native whose band will be holding a CD release party at Mick Kelly's on Thurs., July 2nd.

The band has had an impressive response at its first few debut shows and is quickly building on the respective member’s longtime fan bases in both the Seattle and Portland areas. The aptly titled Breathe will be available online and in NW stores July 24, just in time to heat up summer.

“The most important thing to us is that we go out there, play great music and make sure everyone present has a good time.”

Thus, he guarantees three things at a Boomerang Summer show – good vibes, great songs and a soulful explosion of musical diversity – so far, so good. Perspective has its perks.

And while this may be another CD release party for most, for Highline High grad and lead singer/songwriter Trevor Rasmussen it is something very special.

On Thursday, July 2nd the band will bring their infectious live show to Burien’s Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (located at 435 SW 152nd Street) to offer the CD – before its July 24th release – to their neighborhood fans.

On Sunday afternoon (4/19) an oversized check for $12,000 was presented to (from left), Mike Werle, Executive Director of the Highline Area Food Bank, along with Normandy Park Mayor Shawn McEvoy, from Mick Purdy, co-owner of Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub, and John Nelson, Organizer of the event.

Despite requests from passersby, there was no evidence of an oversized deposit slip, nor any visible signs of Ed McMahon.

It was all part of a celebration that was held at BTB Advertiser Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub Sunday for volunteers who helped make March 15th’s first-ever “Cove to Clover” 5k run such a huge success. Free food and beverages were provided by the popular Irish Pub, which is quickly becoming the de facto fundraising headquarters of Burien (Mick’s holds at least one major fundraiser per quarter).

“The total raised was a huge surprise,” said Mike Werle, Executive Director of the Highline Area Food Bank. “I was hoping for maybe $5,000 tops, but when Mick told me the final tally, I was amazed. Just amazed.”

The $12,000 raised was the most raised for the Highline Food Bank from one event over the last year, eclipsing February’s “Empty Bowls” fundraiser, which raised nearly $11,000.

As we first reported April 11th, monetary donations for the Highline Food Bank are actually up this year, while food donations are down, and the number of families served has increased by 27%, from 720 per month to 900.

If you and your business wants to help collect food or have a fundraiser for the food bank, call Mike Werle at 206-433-9900 and he’ll be happy to have your participation as a Highline Food Bank drop-off point or bring a barrel to your fundraiser.

Mike is looking forward to the National Letter Carriers food drive on May 9th. Every year Highline Food Bank receives 20,000-30,000 pounds of food from Burien neighbors. To participate, all you have to do is leave non-perishable food donations at your mailbox on that date.

Next year’s “Cove to Clover” run is already scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2010, so be sure to mark your calendars and start training now! More information, as well as numerous shout-outs to local sponsors, can be seen at the updated “Cove to Clover” website, which has this groovy poster artwork:

Despite a day which started with snow in some places and a dreadful downpour just about everywhere else, around 300 runners participated in the first-ever “Cove to Clover” 5K Race Sunday morning, which started near the Normandy Park Community Club and ended at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (BTB Advertiser) in Burien.

Here are some photos from race day as taken by Scott Schaefer and Janet Grella:

According to Mick Purdy, co-owner of Mick Kelly’s, $12,000 was raised for the Highline Area Food Bank!

Highline Food Bank Director Mike Werle was there also, cheering runners as they crossed the finish line.

The race was organized by area resident John Nelson, who spent around six months along with 100 or so volunteers to pull this off.

The starting gun was fired by Normandy Park Mayor Shawn McEvoy, an Irishman if ever there was one. On a humorous side note, Mayor McEvoy kept the starter’s pistol with him in the pace car up to Mick Kelly’s. Organizers had to race up and retrieve it from him just in time for the priest to fire the starting shot for the Kid’s Race at St. Francis School.

Ryan Merle, 33, of Port Townsend, won the race in 20:15, beating 2nd-place finisher Paul Huynh by 50 seconds. Photo by Janet Grella.

A couple of years ago two Irish cousins rolled into Burien to open Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub and Restaurant.

Within just two short years, Mick Purdy and Adrian Kelly were awarded Business Leader of the Year, 2007 by the City of Burien.

Recently celebrating their third year in Burien, Mick and Adrian and their staff have become expert fundraisers for various service organizations, diseases and victims.  Thus far nearly $60,000 has been raised for the following causes:

  • Burien Lions Club
  • A cancer victim to pay for treatment
  • Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
  • Autism
  • The family of Deputy Steve Cox
  • The victims of Burien’s apartment fire in June (co-sponsored by BTB & Discover Burien)

Mick Kelly’s hosts fundraisers once a quarter.

Giving back to their community is just part of a marketing formula which includes lots of events – these are the guys that gave us a three day St. Patrick’s Day celebration in their first year in business – a fair amount of Irish culture including Irish Dance and dance lessons every Sunday from 6-9pm (with free tuition) and traditional Irish singing on Saturday and Sundays starting at 3pm.

They additionally fill a few seats the fourth Wednesday of every month with local members of Drinking Liberally (a national grass roots progressive social group that gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics).

Mick Purdy and Adrian Kelly of Mick Kelly's Irish Pub.

Mick’s been in the Burien area for some time and previously owned an Irish Pub in Wallingford.  Adrian came across the great pond a few years back. He literally grew up behind the bar as his family has been in the bar and restaurant for over 80 years in Belfast, Ireland.

Besides the obvious Irish beer on tap (Smithwicks, Harp, Magners Cider, Guiness) they have imports including Newcastle Brown Ale and Stella Artois and eight micros from the Northwest and Alaska, plus both domestic and imported bottled beers. Good to know for those on a budget: Happy Hour prices on beer are reduced by up to $1.25 a pint. Happy Hour times include Sunday-Friday 3-5pm and Sunday thru Thursday 9-11pm. A Happy Hour menu includes sliders, Mexican appetizers, and a few favorites from their regular Irish fare, to name a few.

Ever had a Irish Margarita or Irish Rood Beer? These are just a few of the classic cocktails on Mick Kelly’s cocktail menu.  Or there’s the Martini menue which includes the Belfast Brownie, and the Kelly’s Choc Pop Martini. Their rather extensive wine list includes Mick Kelly’s Private Label wines vinted by Washington winery St. Hiliare and Burien’s own E.B. Foote Winery.

For lunch or dinner, Mick’s offers appetizers, huge salads, homemade soups, clam chowder and chili, pasta, steaks, chicken, pork tenderloin, burgers, sandwiches and nine Irish Specialities including Bangers & Mash, Belfast Supper, Shepherds Pie, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Turkey Dinner, Chicken Potpie, Fish and Chips and Emerald Isle Pie. Mick Kelly’s opens early on Saturday and Sunday where they offer breakfast starting at 7am, and really really good Bloody Mary’s!

They proudly serve Misty Isle Meats, which is environmentally-cultured beef free of antibiotics, added hormones, growth enhancers or anything else that alters what nature does best. Nothing more. Nothing less. Misty Isle Farms’ cattle produce beef products with all the juiciness, tenderness and flavor you expect in a good steak or ground beef.

Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub – a Burien institution in just three years.  Try it, you’ll like it.  They’re located at 435 SW 152nd (right across from the new Burien Town Square – see map below). The bar opens Monday – Friday at 11am and at 7am on weekends.

Adrian Kelly told BTB “it’s fantastic to be a part of the development and future of Burien.  It’s on its way and can only get better.”

We think so too, especially with business leaders like Mick and Adrian.

So click on their Ad, check out their website, and go quaff a pint with these great folks!

NOTE: Results of Sunday’s “Cove to Clover” race, as well as photos, are available here.

A “brand spankin’ new” St. Patrick’s Day run called “Cove to Clover” is coming up Sunday, March 15th, starting at the Normandy Park Community Club (“The Cove”) and finishing at BTB Advertiser Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (complete with a beer garden to quench those thirsty legs).

There will also be a mile long kid’s race beginning at “The Bean” espresso stand St. Francis of Assisi Church and ending at Mick Kelly’s. Please note that registration for the Kid’s Race will take place at The Cove in Normandy Park.

The race will be held on Sunday, March 15 @ 11 am on the same day as Seattle’s massive Patty’s Day Dash. This race will be a refreshingly smaller alternative to what the Paddy’s Day Dash has become. Beware though, this annual race will surely become infamous because the first mile is all uphill and attains 800 vertical feet; locals know it as “Snake Hill”.

Here are the details:

Be sure to mark your calendars for Wed. July 16th, as there will be a major Burien Fire Victim fundraiser with live music, silent and live auctions and much more at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub at 435 SW 152nd in downtown Burien.

Further info will be coming soon, so stay tuned to the B-Town Blog for exclusive information.

In the meantime, if you’d like to donate, look at the right sidebar of this page and you’ll see what appears to be a new “Ad,” but is actually a call to action for all our faithful and generous B-Town Blog Readers to donate to the American Red Cross’ “Burien Apartment Fire Fund.”

All donations will go directly to the victims of last weekend’s tragic fire that killed three, injured six and left dozens homeless.

Latest news developments:

  • On Monday, the King County Sheriff’s Office declared that the fire that destroyed the eight-unit Tara Apartments and heavily damaged the identical Jenny Marie Apartments in the 400 block of Southwest 155th Street was arson. Investigators aren’t releasing what specifically led them to conclude it was arson, said sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart.
  • The fire is being investigated by King County Fire Investigators and the Major Crimes Unit of the Sheriff’s Office.
  • A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible. Anyone with information about the arson should call the Sheriff’s Office immediately at (206) 296-3311.
  • According to the Sheriff’s Office, the fire caused about $1.75 million in damage. But for many of those left homeless, the fire consumed belongings that will be difficult to calculate in dollar amounts.

If you’re interested in helping out (either with donations to the upcoming auction event or your assistance in helping get the word out), please email us ASAP.
