The Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market officially opens its season this Saturday, June 4th at 10 a.m. at South Marina Park in Des Moines (between 6-7 miles south of Burien – map below), and here’s a list of some of the things you can expect:

• Sunny weather, with a high near 72! North northeast wind between 7 and 14 mph.
• New this year – you can use EBT Cards or WIC Fruit & Veggie Checks.
• Asparagus will be in abundance at the market this weekend.
• The Saltwater Saints will be playing live music.
• Opening speeches will be given at 9:45 a.m., including an award to market Manager Rikki Marohl!
• Bloggers from sister site The Waterland Blog will be ‘blogging live‘ all day! Come find their tent – look for the big LCD monitor and geeky looking peeps muttering about internet stuff…
• Highline College’s MaST will be there with ‘Touch Tanks’! HCC MaST program will have their touch and feel tanks at the market for opening day, as well as every 4th Saturday of the month. This Saturday they will also have scuba gear for people to check out. HCC MaST is dedicated to expanding knowledge about the Puget Sound and the surrounding environment through teaching, outreach, and research.
• The Rotary Club of Des Moines is a group of leaders in Des Moines that are building a better community for us all to live in. Come by Rotary’s booth on opening day to learn how they build a better community, and how you can too!
• Destination Des Moines is a non profit working to promote and market our community, focusing on activities to make Des Moines sustainable and livable. Stop by the Destination Des Moines booth at the market this weekend to see how you can help promote and market our community with them!
• Des Moines Legacy Foundation is committed to preserving tradition and expanding youth, adult, and senior parks and recreation opportunities and facilities throughout our community.
• Seattle Southside is an organization promoting our area centrally located near SeaTac International Airport. They feature the perfect blend of urban attractions and close-by natural wonders. They also provide an ideal vacation base to explore Seattle, Tacoma and Washington State. Stop by their booth opening day to learn new places you could explore in our area!
• Breast Friends Lifesavers is a team ready to walk for the Susan G. Komen three day walk for breast cancer. Although the walk is not until September of this year, they will have a booth at the market this Saturday for opening day so be sure to stop by and support them in their fundraising for the cure!
• Truck Farm Seattle is a group that travels around to educate communities about gardens. How do they educate? They show people the garden in the bed of their truck! That’s why they are called Truck Farm. It’s a great new concept, you’ll have great fun hearing all about it at opening day!
• PSE’s Green Power Program is a voluntary option that enables our electricity customers to match up to 100% of the electricity they use with clean, renewable energy from local, independent projects. Stop by our booth to learn more about the program and to find out how you can participate!

The Des Moines Farmers Market is located in South Marina Park, located at South 227th St & Dock Street.

If it’s Thursday, then it must be Farmers Market day in Burien.

The Burien Farmers Market will be open from 11am – 6pm today, and remember – you can now shop without having to stop at the ATM, as they’re now accepting Debit/Credit/EBT cards.

The market is located near Town Square Park, at the intersection of SW 152nd and 5th Place SW.

NOTE: The B-Town Blog is not at the market today, but we’ll be back on Thursday, June 2nd.

Burien City Hall and Town Square Park will be bustling this Saturday, as it will not only serve as host to the Sea Mar Binational Health Fair (read more here), but also to the biggest El Tianguis Latino Market yet.

The outdoor market will run from 10am – 4pm, with over 40 vendors featuring food and drink, arts and crafts, and products and services by and for the Latino community.

Latinos and Anglos alike (not to mention everybody else) are welcome to attend!

At today’s Burien Farmers Market, you’ll get a chance to taste some FREE food samples from Elliott Bay Brewery, from Noon – 2pm at the yellow Discover Burien tent, so why not make plans to take a “long lunch” and head on over?

While there, you can also pick up some farm-fresh produce, arts and crafts, honey and a wide assortment of other great stuff.

The kids are back in school, so what better time to enjoy your freedom and “Keep Clam” than by coming to today’s Burien Farmers Market to sample some FREE clam chowder from Ivar’s?

Just drop by the yellow Discover Burien tent anytime between Noon and 2pm today to get your free sample, then meander through the great local vendors for fresh produce, berries, arts & crafts and much more.

There will be live “dancin’ in the street” at 2pm at Sunday’s El

El Tianguis market runs from 10am – 4pm at Burien Town Square Park, and products include Latino food and beverages, arts and crafts, home and garden, clothing, electronics, and many other items that are traditionally available in markets in Latino countries.

Today’s Burien Farmers Market runs until 6pm, and while we’re not there (due to a couple of minor medical issues for two of us), it’s still worth dropping by, if only for the following two reasons:

1. Fresh. Roasted. Corn. That’s right, real corn on the cob roasted in a big ol’ green roaster. Tasty!

2. Free food samples from BTB Advertiser Elliott Bay Brewhouse. Look for ‘em at the yellow Discover Burien tent near SW 152nd.

1. The Humane Society’s MaxMobile is here, which means you should come shop, buy fresh produce, arts & crafts and possibly…a PUPPY (or kitten)! The bright, 33-foot, custom-built yellow RV will be here until around 3pm, providing pet adoptions on the spot – all you have to do is fill out a form, pay a fee and you can leave the market with a new friend.

2. We’re selling DVDs for “B-Town: How Burien Came Into Its Own,” the documentary film shot last summer that’s all about Burien, will be available for purchase at The B-Town Blog’s booth at today’s Farmers Market for just $15. All proceeds from sales will be donated to Hospitality House, a Burien-based shelter which has helped hundreds of homeless women “get their groove back.”

But you’d best act fast – we only have 10 7 copies left, and we’ll be at our booth from 11am – 3pm. We’re mid-way down 5th Place SW on the east (library/city hall) side near the Burien Town Square– just look for a big ol’ LCD monitor and The B-Town Blog banner and a couple of goofballs huddled around a computer.

Featuring interviews with local dignitaries like founding City Councilmember Sally Nelson, first Mayor Arun Jhaveri, current Mayor Joan McGilton, as well as businesspeople like Dan “The Sausageman” House and many others, this film has very high production values and is a great tribute to our city.

There will be a live Mexican dance presentation by the “Grupo Folklorico Danza Regional Guelaguetza” dance troupe this Sunday, Aug. 15th, from 2:30pm – 3:30pm at the El Tianguis open-air Latino market, located at Burien Town Square.

According to market Director Mateo Monda, this group performed at last year’s Folk Life festival in Seattle.

El Tianguis market runs from 10am – 4pm, and products include Latino food and beverages, arts and crafts, home and garden, clothing, electronics, and many other items that are traditionally available in markets in Latino countries.

Today’s Farmers Market runs from 11am – 6pm at Burien Town Square, and we’ll be at our usual tent on 5th Place SW, around the mid-point on the east side, so come on by and say “Howdy, B-Town Blog!” and we’ll give you some free coupons from great local businesses.

Celebrate Farmers Market Week and enjoy produce at the peak of perfection

It’s the height of summer – and the height of the farmers market season across King County. With 41 farmers markets spreading from Auburn to Woodinville, it’s a sure bet that farm-fresh produce is just minutes away from wherever you live.

“Whether you’re looking for a quick snack or the ingredients for a special meal, visiting your local farmers market is a must,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “Supporting farmers markets helps strengthen our rural communities and is a terrific way to eat healthier.”

Governor Chris Gregoire has proclaimed Aug. 1-7 as “Washington State Farmers Market Week,” which is a timely reminder to visit a farmers market and get some of the best just-picked fruits and vegetables around, plus a wide assortment of other tasty products.

This time of year, farmers markets feature berries, early ripening apples, root vegetables and much more. Many farmers markets also offer farm-fresh eggs and meat, while some markets sell farmer grown and produced cheese, wine and other products.

King County farmers markets provide strong sales opportunities for more than 250 family farms across Washington, including more than 100 farmers from the county itself.
