The Presbyterian Women of Lake Burien Presbyterian Church are holding a Silent Auction and Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 8th beginning at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Highline Area Food Bank, the New Futures Organization that provides after-school tutoring for local Highline area students, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program which supports persons facing disasters both nationally and internationally and other Presbyterian Women Mission projects.

The Silent Auction and Dinner will be held in the Lake Burien Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at 15003 14th Ave. S.W. in Burien.

Tickets for the dinner will be sold after church this Sunday, Oct. 2nd. Adult tickets are $15.00 and children under ten are $8.00.

Many Burien businesses have already made donations.

This event will feature the launch of Dr. Tobin Wilson’s new book ARETÉ AGAIN, the art of Linda McCray, and the music of Mark Wagner.

The weekend begins with an art exhibit that runs Friday, March 11th from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Saturday (March 12th), and Sunday (March 13th) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The conference begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday with registration and book signing and moves through worship with the music of Mark Wagner and talks with Tobin Wilson and Linda McCray. The book shares compelling stories from Rev. Wilson’s life in ministry—from the traumatic to the hilarious to the inspiring. Mark Wagner’s life and music are shaped by a visit to the Village of Hope in Northern Uganda; he brings that vision to worship at the conference. Linda McCray’s artwork is incredible. For instance, this featured triptych, Passion to Pentecost, is 6 x 9 feet and created with acrylics and sand from Jerusalem.

Lake Burien Presbyterian Church is holding a fundraiser Silent Auction and Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 9th from 6pm – 8pm in the church Fellowship Hall at 15003 14th Ave. SW.

Several historical Burien items will be offered in the Silent Auction, including:

1. A prize-winning quilt made for the Washington State Centennial in 1988 quilted by the “Hands That Talk,” a quilting group active at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church for over 30 years. The quilt has many hidden objects like Mt. Rainier, salmon, the Olympia State Capitol, Mt. Spokane, Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, evergreen trees, whales and many more. A list of all the hidden items will be available at the auction.
2. A Floral Still Life Painting by Burien artist, Marjorie Fogelstedt, who died in 1992. She was a fashion illustrator for Frederick and Nelson for 25 years. As a local watercolor artist, her work was exhibited in Northwest watercolor exhibitions and at local Highline galleries.
3. Handmade pottery by potter Don Schindler, a member of the Seahurst Gallery and whose works were displayed there and in the Burien Art Gallery for many years.

This prize-winning quilt will be offered up for auction on Saturday, Oct. 9th.

Other samples of auction items include a round of golf with Pastor Tobin Wilson, two autographed balls from Mariner catcher Dan Wilson, a cruise on Puget Sound, a gourmet dinner, a custom ordered handmade Christening gown, a set of 10 dessert plates, sugar and creamer and cups and saucers made from hand-painted porcelain from Bavaria and an original painting by Artist-in-Residence, Sonya Vasilieff.

Dinner tickets are on sale for $12.50 for youth and adults, and $6.00 for children 12 and under. Information on tickets and the auction is available at 206-242-6023. All tickets must be reserved by Monday, October 4th.

The Silent Auction and Dinner is sponsored by the Lake Burien Presbyterian Women. All proceeds from the auction and dinner will be divided between Orphan Relief and Rescue, the non-profit serving 22 orphanages in Liberia and Benin that house about 1000 children that is newly located at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, the Boy Scout Troop 360, the Lake Burien Presbyterian Women’s Mission programs and scholarships to send children and youth to camp.

Well, the good folks at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church are holding a Free Resource Fair and Block Party, where they will be giving out advice, resources and more to parents, along with FREE Backpacks (with school supplies) to the first 300 kids this Saturday, Aug. 15th from 12 to 3pm at 15003 14th SW.

This is their second annual event, and is in conjunction with the Church Council of Greater Seattle.

To Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, local resident Maureen Hoffmann organized a “clothing swap” party at her Burien home, where numerous area women donated unused clothing.

Burien city councilmember Sally Nelson and BTB Sales Diva Janet Grella were among the 14 women who swapped clothes, shoes and accessories. The left over clothes were delivered to two local charities over the past two days – Hospitality House and Community Clothing Closet.

On Monday, clothes were delivered to Hospitality House Executive Director Natalie Reber and case worker Judy Allman. Natalie asked that if BTB readers want to donate clothes or personal items to its residents to call first (206-242-1860) or donate to the Community Clothing Closet.

The shelter is housed at the Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, located at 15003 14th Ave SW.

Since opening its doors in October 2000, Hospitality House has been assisted by more than 500 individual volunteers who have received orientation in the causes of homelessness and how to relate to women who would be housed in the shelter. In the past 8 years over 500 single homeless women have been helped. Typically at the end of the program, about 80% move into permanent housing.

In 2008, the House provided 2,710 bed nights for 84 homeless women of South King County. They also revamped their strategic goals and named Natalie Executive Director. Natalie has had extensive experience working with non-profit and political organizations and is deeply committed to social justice.

Maureen took a carload of clothes to the Community Clothing Closet, located at Hope Christian Fellowship  on Sunday March 22nd. On Sundays, anyone can walk in, get a meal and gather clothes that they need, for free. The Community Clothing Closet is a church-based outreach program that helps needy Burien-area individuals and families.

They are currently seeking volunteers to help – if you live in the Burien or surrounding communities and have a desire to serve the needy.give ‘em a hand!

The Community Clothing Closet is located at 623 SW 143rd Street in Burien. If you care to donate gently used items drop them by Sundays between 3 and 5pm.

“What a great way of having a party,” Maureen told us, “enjoying laughter, conversation and a bite to eat…getting some “new” clothes and shoes…and providing a lot of very nice clothes to other women! We had four hanging racks of clothes, shelves and piles of folded items, shoes hither and yon and an accessories corner. Everyone seemed to go home with a few new treasures.”
