There are “New Lower Auto Rates” out there, and new B-Town Blog Advertiser Harbor Insurance Services will help you find them.

Harbor Insurance Services is located in the Seahurst neighborhood of Burien. Owners Julie and Tim Reagan started this agency over 30 years ago in their basement. Shortly after that they moved their office to Burien, and 13 years later to Seahurst. Their daughter Leah Caudle “officially” joined the family biz in 2001, but she’s actually been working with them since the 8th grade doing filing, answering phones and helping out in the office.

Tim, Julie and Leah pride themselves in their shared philosophy of selling insurance which is service, service……and finally, service. They add to the service aspect by being family friendly and accessible. Julie adds, “When you call Harbor Insurance you’ll always talk to an agent.”

The folks at Harbor Insurance will treat you like family.

In addition to auto and home, Harbor Insurance insures a variety of vehicles, or as Julie calls them, “the toys.” This includes boats, RV’s, motorcycles and motor homes. And because they’re INDEPENDENT insurance agents they can shop around for best prices to suit your needs. Among their portfolio of insurance companies are:

  • Grange
  • Progressive
  • Foremost
  • Hagerty

And about those lower rates, Tim? “We now have tiered rating systems so we can offer the most preferred rate to the most preferred driver while still getting good rates for those with less than perfect records.”

Unlike other “Ma and Pa” businesses in Burien, Julie and Tim are also “Nana and Papa” (to Leah’s boys, Atticus- 2 1/2 and Dominic- 6 months). Atticus has moved on to daycare, but Dominic is in residence every day, holding court in his well-toyed corner of the office. “Customers just love bringing their kids in here because of all the toys”, explained Leah. A lot of customers also stop by just to watch Leah’s little red-headed boys grow and change.

Harbor’s slogan is “Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1979.” “Nana and Papa” pride themselves in taking care of insurance needs for multiple generations of families. Original customers have referred Harbor Insurance to their kids, who have again referred them to their kids. And with Leah on-board, there’s another generation or two of families who will enjoy Harbor Insurance Services’ .….well, service!

Harbor Insurance is located at 2104 SW 152nd in Seahurst.

If you want to shop around for lower rates on your insurance, contact Harbor Insurace:

They’d love to meet you.

However you contact them, give Harbor Insurance Services a chance to show you how to lower your insurance rates on your auto, home and toys.

The innovative low-income helping newspaper Real Change has an interesting article on how a Burien family avoided foreclosure on their home through the Burien-based ACORN office.

Definitely worth a read if you like to start your week with positive, uplifting news about local folks making it through tough times with help from others:

After being unable to meet their mortgage payments, Georgene Monday, with her brother, Jesse Bake, expected to lose their Burien home to foreclosure. But after contacting ACORN, the mortgage was rewritten.

In an amazing, 11th-hour save that Monday attributes to contacting legislators, friends writing the lender for her and, most importantly, finding ACORN, a grassroots group that was negotiating loans for distressed homeowners nationwide before the housing bubble burst.

Monday, 62, got a referral to the Seattle-area chapter of ACORN – the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now – after contacting the state attorney general’s office for help.

And if you’re in a similar situation, please don’t hesitate to contact ACORN – they’re headquartered right here in Burien:

It’s tough being a kid, as the saying goes.

It’s even tougher being a kid who isn’t feeling well, maybe suffering from a sore throat or stomach flu or other issues.

And it’s tougher still if the young person’s family has limited – or no – health insurance.

That’s where the Youth Health Center comes in. The Center serves adolescents, ages 13-19.

The priority there is medical care, and in many cases, even if a patient’s family has limited financial means or is not insured.

Sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to privately when, emotionally, things don’t feel right. The Center has two counselors – one female, one male – available for private sessions. Call the number below for their hours.

Through no fault of its own the Youth Health Center has been “bounced around” town over the last year or so.

Well, it has a fine new home. The Center is located in the northwest portion of Highline Medical Center’s Main Campus, between Sylvester Road SW and 8th Avenue SW, just south of SW 160th Street.

Many families may qualify for programs funded by the state of Washington. The Health Center’s office manager, Bonnie Arroyo, will be happy to help patients research and apply for assistance programs.

The medical staff is led by Patricia Burke, PA-C.

The main transit Routes to the Center are #123 and #139.

The Center also has a clinic in Renton, with limited hours. The phone number there is 425-254-2710

Due to the current economic crisis, many of America’s soldiers will not be able to afford to come home for the holidays.

The Giving Zone, a Burien-based nonprofit organization, is launching Operation Home for the Holidays, which is seeking people to donate airline miles or credit card rewards to help these soldiers come home.

The B-Town Blog is proud to welcome its latest Advertiser to our property: IBuySeattleHomes.com!

IBuySeattleHomes.com is a locally-owned company that buys, fixes up and sells homes. It’s run by Brent Fosso, who was born and raised in that “other” B-Town ‘hood called Ballard, and who now makes his home in West Seattle.

Brent has been buying, fixing and selling homes in the area since 1984.

“I’ve been drawn to real estate all of my life,” Brent remarked. “I used to help my Dad do remodel projects on weekends, and I think that’s when I got the bug for fixing things up. I guess fixing homes is some kind of ‘adult’ version of my childhood fun. Now I specialize in purchasing fixer uppers – I love turning something that is not very attractive into something beautiful.”

After college, Brent decided to finally listen to “that inner voice.” He always enjoyed the varied aspects of real estate, so he thought, why not buy a fixer upper?

After buying, fixing up and selling that first house in 1984, Brent was hooked. It was a pretty sorry looking West Seattle house, with no foundation, termite and carpenter ant damage, dry-rotted porches, animal odors, and siding that had not been painted in decades. Brent spent the entire summer working on it and was quite proud of his first remodel. The neighbors loved it. He then sold it to a nice family, and Brent got a lot of pleasure seeing buyers so happy with their new home.

Despite the national real estate down-turn, he is still buying, and likes the areas of Burien, White Center, West Seattle, and as far north as Ballard.

“I like the older neighborhoods” he adds.

There are many people who wish to avoid paying a realtor a commission, and since Brent is not a realtor, the sellers save that expense. Because of this, he does not purchase properties that are listed with real estate agents. He prefers to buy directly form the owner, and will usually not bother with getting a home inspection, because as he says “When I buy a fixer, I always figure on the home needing a lot of work.”

So…click on his Ad, check out his website, and if you’re in the market to sell your home (no matter how bad its condition), please give him a call at (206) 935-5000.

BURIEN – A home under construction near 23rd SW and 158th (north Three Tree Point area) burst into flames and burned early Friday morning.

The fire started just before 6am, and investigators are still trying to determine the cause.

A neighbor allegedly heard an explosion just before the fire began, then the entire area knew something was going on when large clouds of smoke billowed up, sirens and horns blared while news helicopters hovered overhead.

At one point, TV images showed flames shooting from a rooftop vent of the home.

Fire damaged both the first and second stories, and 80 percent of the home could be lost, according to firefighters.

The owners of the home were apparently in South Carolina at the time and are returning (they may already be back by now).

No one was injured.
