The West Seattle Rainbow Girls will hold their fifth annual Christmas tree recycle fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at the Southgate Masonic Hall, located at 1004 SW 152nd in Olde Burien.

They’ll also be at the Alki Masonic Hall (4736 40th Ave. SW.) from 10:00 – 2:00.

Suggested donation is $5.00.

We’ll be taking some time off to spend the holidays with our families and friends, but we’d like to first wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, Festivus, Boxing Day, Solstice, Isaac Newton’s birthday and any other early winter celebrations we may have overlooked!

To celebrate, here’s an obscure holiday song from one of our favorite Northwest artists of all time – “Happy Santa Claus” by Billy Rancher and the Unreal Gods.

If you’ve never heard of Billy and Co., they were a hot new wave/rockabilly/ska/boomchuck band from Portland in the 80s.

They were going to be “the next big thing,” until Billy tragically died of lymphoma in 1986 at age 29:

Let Boy Scouts Recycle Your Tree Jan. 7–8 At Herr Backyard Garden

As they have been doing for several years now, local Boy Scout Troop #375 will be recycling Christmas trees the weekend of Jan. 7th and 8th, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Herr Backyard Garden Center, located at 1st Ave South and SW 160th in Burien.

It’s just $5 to donate your tree(s), which get recycled.

“This is one of two major fundraisers we do every year,” said Scoutmaster Mark Ufkes last year. “Along with our annual dinner at St. Francis, the money raised today will go towards scholarships for camps for scouts. And people should know that a kid can be a Boy Scout without having to pay much money.”

Troop #375 serves boys in areas including Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien, White Center and West Seattle. For more information, check out their website here.

We here at The B-Town Blog highly recommend that all Readers recycle your tree with these kids, because everything stays local, from the donations, which fund scout activities, to the firewood (which will be sold to raise funds) to the mulch made from the tree chippings (which will end up in a local yard).

Hi-Liners’ ‘Winterfest’ Will Be At Community Center Annex Dec. 29

Burien’s Hi-Liners will be celebrating ‘Winterfest’ at the Community Center Annex on Thursday, Dec. 29th from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., with a “magical evening of holiday cheer for the whole family!”

Imagine your favorite games – Ships and Sailors, Name Ball, a special version of Heads or Tails, a Cake Walk, Ring Toss – all played for Prizes!

Plus, SING ALONG WITH ALI! Gather around the piano to sing Holiday Favorites.

Not to Mention – A special performance by the Graduating Class of Hogwarts Academy and a 7:30 DVD premiere of the 2011 MainStage Production Chicago! (this production is PG-13, so non cast members must be over 12 or accompanied by a parent in the viewing room).

Scrip for food and games will be on sale at the door – 10 scrip for $5.

‘Wrap It Up’ & Help Raise Money For Furry Faces & AARF Foundations

‘Wrap It Up’ is a gift wrapping service that will serve as a fundraiser for Furry Faces and AARF Foundations, with a local version happening at Elliott Bay Brewery on Friday, Dec. 23rd, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.

“The elves of F3 and the Animal Aid & Rescue Foundation are just waiting to wrap your gifts in splendor and uniqueness!” reads an announcement. “We have gift wrap, bows, tape, ribbon, garland, pinecones, pipe cleaners, name tags, and more! It’s up to you how much you would like to donate for the gift wrapping with 100% of the proceeds going directly to helping animals. How is that possible? Because our generous business partner, Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub, F-cubers and A.A.R.F.’ers have donated everything needed for this event!”

Those in need of wrapping can sit back and enjoy a beverage and nibble while watching the elves dazzle you with their brilliant smiles and unique wrapping styles!

Burien’s New City Dance Presenting ‘The Nutcracker’ Saturday, Dec. 17th

Burien’s New City Dance Company will be performing two shows of ‘The Nutcracker And the Land of Sweets’ on Saturday, Dec. 17th at the Burien Community Center.

The performances will be 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and the Burien Community Center is located at 14700 6th Ave SW.

Admission is $8.00 for Adults, $6.00 for Students 3 and up as well as Seniors 56+.

Get your gloves and hats out because it’s going to be a chilly but busy weekend in the general B-Town area – below are some haps going on this weekend and beyond.

And oops – we almost forgot to include Burien Little Theatre’s stage reading of ‘A Christmas Story’ on Saturday, Dec. 10th at 2 p.m. Here’s what Director Rochelle Flynn says about it:

Hello Again Friends, Neighbors, Family and anyone else who happens to be on this list

I’m just doing another last minute pitch to urge you all to come and see the wonderful production of “A Christmas Story” that I directed. It’s based on the classic movie about Ralphie who wants nothing more than a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. We do this in the style of a “radio play” complete with fun and wonderful sound effects. It’s really worth seeing and appropriate for families but witty enough for sophisticated adults. It’s at 2pm at Burien Little Theater and it’s free!

The theater is on 4th Ave SW between SW 144TH and SW 146TH. Call me on my cell after 12 tomorrow if you need more directions.

Highline Christian Church’s ‘Outdoor Living Nativity’ Will Be Dec. 16-17

Burien’s Highline Christian Church will be holding seven performances of ‘The Outdoor Living Nativity’ in the parking lot of its campus the weekend of Dec. 16 and 17.

“Merry Christmas from Highline Christian Church!” reads an announcement. “Please join us for the live, 20 minute story of the birth of Jesus. This outdoor nativity play includes live animals and cast.”

WHEN: Seven 20-minute shows over two nights:

Donate Toys For Tots At Normandy Park Towne Center Through Dec. 14

The 2011 Toys for Tots Collection is now taking place at the Normandy Park Towne Center through December 14th, where new unwrapped toys can be dropped off daily from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

New owner Tom O’Keefe graciously donated the space in the Towne Center for the use by the US Marines.

Towne Center is located at 19900 1st Avenue South in Normandy Park.
