As a scientist and engineer, I am naturally skeptical…I took Anita’s First Degree class and since then, I have experienced healing on many levels, as well as the joy that comes from helping others by sharing the gift of Reiki with them!-DJ
(Anita’s) course equipped me with the history, theory and knowledge of Reiki practice, as well as with hands on experience that put my newly acquired skills into practice and gave me confidence to offer Reiki to hospice patients…MM
The atmosphere of the class made it safe to learn and ask questions-RP

It’s that time of year again, when the holiday trimmings start coming off, get put into big plastic storage bins in the shed or garage, leaving behind a dilapidated and dried up, dangerously flammable Christmas tree with no place to go.
And not only that, but you probably also have lots of cardboard boxes, Styrofoam and packing materials scattered about as well.
Here’s your B-Town Blog guide to how to recycle your holiday crap:
BOY SCOUT TROOP #375 RECYCLING EVENT SAT./SUN. JAN. 2-3:
- Boy Scout Troop #375 will be recycling trees on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 2nd and 3rd) from 9am – 3pm.
- Go to BTB Advertiser Herr Backyard Garden Center on SW 160th near First Ave South, and look for the Boy Scouts and wood chipper device.
- $5 fee per tree.
- Trees must be “clean,” meaning no tinsel, no forgotten ornaments, etc.
- Call Herr Garden Center for more information: 242-2014.
NORMANDY PARK:
- Allied Waste provides curbside collection of Christmas Trees to single-family residential yard debris customers.
- Yard Debris customers can set Christmas trees out on their regularly scheduled collection day.
- Trees must be free of flocking, tinsel, ornaments and metal hangers, cut to 4′ lengths and tied into bundles less than 2′ wide.
- Use biodegradable string or twine – no nylon, plastic or other synthetic materials.
- Flocked trees are not recyclable and will not be accepted – put flocked trees in the garbage.
JAN. 11-15 DES MOINES TREE-CYCLING EVENT:
- Allied Waste will be picking up Christmas trees for City of Des Moines residential curbside customers during the week of January 11 – 15 on the normal garbage pick-up day.
- Place trees curbside, cut into 4′ lengths and tie into bundles no more than 2′ wide.
- Tinsel, garland, and ornament hangers must be removed.
- There will be no charge for this special pick-up.
- Must be a garbage customer to be eligible.
- Trees need to be cut into 4′ lengths and tied into bundles no more than 2′ wide.
- Call Laura Techico with questions at 206-870-6595.
DO IT YOURSELF:
- Waste Management also takes Christmas trees, but we suggest cutting yours in 4′ lengths and tie it into bundles less than 2′ wide, and perhaps even cutting it up and placing it inside your yard waste container.
- Pacific Topsoils, Inc. in Tukwila allows Christmas tree drop-offs; Call for Hours (206) 772-3091; located at 6000 S 129th Street in Tukwila.
- King County has several options for recycling Christmas trees. Call the King County Solid Waste Division Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
More suggestions from Sustainable Burien’s website:
- Styrofoam: at the Sustainable Burien collection event on Thursday, Dec. 31st and Friday, Jan. 1 or at Styrorecycle any time. All Styrofoam must be clean. They’ll also take clean packing peanuts of all types. See their Events page for details.
- Christmas Trees: In your yard waste (ornaments and other non-biodegradable items need to be removed, check with your waste collection company to see how much cutting you need to do) or at the above-mentioned Boy Scout Troop #375 tree-cycling event.
- Boxes and wrapping paper: In with your regular recycling as long as you’ve removed ribbons, bows and any other non-recyclable material. Foil wrappings, wrapping with embedded material and other non-paper wrappings are not recyclable.
- Electronics: Under a Washington State law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2009, TVs, computers, monitors and laptops can be recycled for free at many locations. Usable, working items can be dropped off at most charities who will resell them. Dead or out-dated items can be recycled at a number of locations. Personally I suggest taking all electronics to RE-PC in Tukwila or South Seattle. They will resell what they can, and what can’t be sold is recycled properly and locally through Total Reclaim which is important. Some recycling locations ship material out of State or worse yet out of the country for “recycling” and that can cause big problems. See our archived tip for details. If all you’ve got is items that can’t be resold, save a step and take them all to Total Reclaim. Contact them to see what else they’ll take.
- For other Holiday related items: see the links in the top right corner of the King County Solid Waste Page.
BTB Advertiser Jim Coleman, DDS recently held their annual Stuffed Animal Drive for children who end up in the Highline Medical Center Emergency Rooms, and this year received over 300 donations!
The purpose of the annual drive is to provide children who may be visiting hospitals something to “calm them,” like a stuffed animal.
“These animals are given to children as they check into the ER and I have been assured by the nurses that they have a very calming effect on the kids,” said Lynn Coleman. “About half of this year’s donations went to the main Highline Medical Center campus, and the other half went to the Riverton campus in Tukwila.”
We here at The B-Town Blog tip our collective hats to this innovative fundraiser, as many of us here still use our stuffed animals to help calm us.

The sister-in-law is getting the hat and scarf set and your boss is getting the novelty trophy with “world’s greatest” across the front. Okay so here’s the advice that will save you from looking like you put more thought into your shoes today than what to give the important people in your life.

Sustainable Burien wants everyone to know that they’re arranging for an innovative event on Thursday, Dec. 31st and Friday, Jan. 1st near Burien Town Square – FREE Styrofoam recycling!
That’s right folks – now you can safely and ecologically dispose of those pesky little Styrofoam critters, especially the ones that stick to you via static electricity. What a relief.
Here are the details:
WHAT: Styrofoam Recycling Event
WHEN: Thursday, Dec. 31st and Friday, Jan. 1st from 1pm to 5pm both days
WHERE: An empty storefront at 457 SW 148th, across the parking lot from Bartell’s and Ace Hardware, in the northeast corner of the lot.
INFO: From their website:
West Bild, the developer of Burien Town Square, has graciously loaned us an empty store front at 457 SW 148th, across the parking lot from Bartells and Ace Hardware, in the North East corner of the lot.
For two days only we’ll be collecting clean white Styrofoam (#6 or EPS) materials, the types most commonly found with new electronic products, appliance packaging, computers and monitors, furniture packaging and picnic/shipping coolers.
We cannot accept urethane foam cushions, expanded polypropylene (EPP), foam insulation, plastic wrap, bubble wrap or hard plastics.
We reserve the right to refuse anything that doesn’t meet the guidelines.
To determine if you have the right material look for the “#6″ or “EPS” inside the recycle symbol, if it’s sheet material bend it – it should break and snap with loose beads. All foreign material like plastic sheeting, tape, staples and cardboard must be removed.
All material collected will be taken to Styrorecycle where the Styrofoam is ground up, compressed and densified into blocks, which are then manufactured into products such as picture frames, TV and computer cases, office equipment and other plastic products.
Styrorecycle is on the west side of Ikea in Renton, if you’re going that way you can drop off Styrofoam for recycling at no charge. They are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5:30pm all year long.
More information available at the Sustainable Burien website.
The Burien / Normandy Park Fire Department has done a holiday outreach program for over 25 years, and Tuesday morning (Dec. 22nd), they set out with Santa in their shiny fire trucks to make their annual delivery to 59 local families in need.
Local firefighters receive family names from the Washington Department of Social and Health Services office, then provide each one with a nice turkey dinner as well as stuffing, pies and other assorted food.
Each family also receives several toys and gifts for each child, as well as gift cards to Fred Meyer for each teenager 13-17.
One hundred percent of all donations are returned to the community and all donations are distributed locally.
“Contributions were down a bit this year,” said Doug Leudeman of Fire District #2. “And while we had enough gifts to give out, we could certainly use more cash donations to help offset some of the costs.”
Cash donations are still being accepted at the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department Headquarters Station, located at 15100 8th Ave SW; phone: (206) 242-2040; website: www.burienfire.org.
Photographer Michael Brunk was there to capture this Photo Slideshow:
If you just happen to be a local pirate looking for a last-minute gift idea, we’ve got a doozy – one of your neighbors is trying to sell a custom-milled, solid one-piece steel, “black powder cannon” that’s only been used twice for just $375!
Some of the features from the Craigslist Ad:
- Black Powder Cannon
- Custom milled solid 1 piece steel.
- Two year old Cannon
- Used Twice
- Fuse Hole
- Shoots Baseball sized objects

Our favorite part of course is this happy ending greeting:
Please email with any questions! Happy Holidays
Stacie
Wait, aren’t these things ILLEGAL?
Who cares…it’s Christmas! So act fast, and email your order in now:

Oh, and whatever you do, don’t read this story about a makeshift cannon that killed a 4-year old boy in Thurston County in July, 2007.
Yes, “Happy Holidays” and have fun with your cannon!
Beginning this Friday (Dec. 18th) and continuing through New Year’s Eve, law enforcement in King County will join other local police to conduct “X-52″ patrols around the area, including the general Burien and Normandy Park areas.
“X-52″ stands for extra patrols 52 weeks per year, and the goal of the program is to reduce speeding and DUI-related traffic fatalities and serious injuries on the roads.
Other areas where the X-52ers will be out on Dec. 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, and 31 include:
- Des Moines
- Federal Way
- Kent
- Federal Way
- SeaTac
- Algona
- Bellevue
- Black Diamond
- Carnation-Duvall
- Clyde Hill
- Covington
- Issaquah
- Kirkland
- Maple Valley
- Mercer Island
- Newcastle
- North Bend
- Pacific
- Port of Seattle
- Redmond
- Sammamish
- Seattle
- Snoqualmie
- Woodinville
- Washington State Patrol
Officers will look for people who drive after drinking or using drugs and arrest them, so if you tend to drink and drive…DON’T!
Washington Traffic Safety Commission is releasing $450,000 worth of grants to local law enforcement agencies to help them provide additional impaired driving and speed patrols every week of the year.
These sustained enforcement patrols will specifically target speed and DUI offenders, as well as look for other traffic violations. The program is being administered statewide through a network of community traffic safety task forces.
The X-52 program also includes initiatives designed to let the public know that these extra patrols are happening in Washington every week. $450,000 is budgeted for paid radio advertising and alternative messaging. Earned media efforts will be spearheaded by community traffic safety task forces.
“Traffic crashes kill or seriously injure hundreds of people in King County each year,” said Dr. David Fleming, Director and Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County. “By driving sober or planning safe rides home, you can protect yourself, family and friends.”
A total of 94 people died in King County traffic crashes in 2008, and an additional 669 people were seriously injured. In a 2006 survey of Seattle drinkers, the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center found that one out of five drinkers admitted to driving after drinking too much at least once in the past month.
Officers who participated in 2008 – 2009 X-52 patrols in King County made 5,061 contacts with dangerous drivers, wrote 3,619 traffic citations or infractions, and arrested 105 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Officers also made 14 arrests for felony crimes.
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission funds all X-52 DUI patrols as one strategy delineated in “Washington’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Target Zero.” The goal of “Target Zero” is zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington State by 2030.

The City of Burien, along with the Burien Police and King County Sheriff’s Department, are seeking donations of gift cards for area kids and families in need this holiday season.
Gift Cards in $20 increments are preferred, specifically from the local Fred Meyer and Safeway stores.
The deadline is Monday, Dec. 21st, and donated cards can be dropped off at City Hall during regular business hours.
There’s also a great opportunity for a local business or resident to “adopt” a needy family, and there are at least 35 in need this year.
Here’s more info from Nicki Maraulja, Community Service Officer:
It’s that time of year again to help out our kids and families in need for Christmas.
We have some 40 families that could use an extra hand this year.
We’re now collecting any gift cards for either Fred Meyer or Safeway.
These gift cards can be dropped off at Burien City Hall during City hours, until Dec. 21st.
Cards should be in $20.00 increments.
We would also be interested in any business or community member that would be interested in adopting a family. I have at least 35 families as of right now.
If anyone has any questions, I can be reached at the precinct. in Burien, at 206-296-3333.
We know they’re out there, and we need your help finding them. We’re talking about budding “Clark Griswalds” – you know the type we mean – when they flip the switch on their holiday display, the lights dim on the entire block from the power drain. Airplanes arriving at SeaTac are momentarily confused about the location of the runway because their house is so bright. You have trouble sleeping at night because of the beams of light blazing through your blinds and curtains no matter how tightly you close them.
We all love their work, as long as we don’t have to live next door.
If you live on a block that features one of these spectacular outdoor lighting displays — or if it’s your own display (we promise not to tell) – we want to know about it! We’d like to compile a list of the best locations in the general Burien and Des Moines areas for our readers looking to put together their holiday light cruising plans.
Send your recommendations to michael@b-townblog.com and we’ll dispatch our photographer to check it out. If we like what we find, you could see your favorite holiday lights showcased right here on the blog!

Trainer, Highline Athletic Club
Have you wanted to lose weight, increase your energy levels and get in amazing shape before the holidays this year? If you’re like many people, this year has slipped away from you and here we are in the holiday season again. There is no reason to resign yourself to the idea that it is ever too late to lose the weight you want before the holiday parties.
Something you can do to kick start your progress today would be to keep a food journal. Keeping a food journal not only helps you consciously focus on what you are eating but it also helps you build a subconscious mindset to stay on track with your goals. You can either carry a notepad or email yourself so you can write it down in your journal later. There are also software programs that will help you track calories. Another simple thing you can do is make sure to stay hydrated by consuming 55% of your body weight in ounces of water. Even mild dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%. For example: a 100 pounds person would consume 55 ounces per day (100 pounds multiplied by 0.55 = 55 ounces.)
If you would like additional tips and ideas I am here to help. If you have decided this is the year that you will improve the health of yourself and your family, I have a program that will get you to that goal. I am one of the elite trainers at the award winning, “BEST GYM by King 5’s Evening Magazine” Highline Athletic Club located at 125 South 156th in Burien. I have been servicing the members of HAC and the Burien community since 2001. I offer fully customized Meal Planning that is family-friendly and easy to use. I have delivered hundreds of meal plans to busy moms and professionals over the years. My plan is not a diet; it’s a dietary lifestyle change using foods that you and your family already eat.

HAC Trainer Chris Knight can get you in shape by the holidays.
You can look your best and feel terrific this holiday season. When you’re stuck in a rut and going at it alone, things seem so much more impossible. I can give anyone the ability to consistently lose 1-2 pounds every week. To give you an idea of how fast you will notice the results, imagine the size of a small grapefruit. Now, realize that a pound of body fat is approximately the volume of this same small grapefruit. It’s never too late, but the sooner you schedule an appointment the more you can lose before the holidays.
Get started before the New Year & start reaping the rewards. A great food program paired with an effective exercise program will have you looking and feeling great in no time at all. Stop by Highline Athletic Club to check out our great facility and full service offerings.
For more information about starting your personal food program contact me, Chris Knight at cell: (206) 551-4501 or Chris@HighlineAthleticClub.com. I will be able to answer any of the questions you may have regarding this service.
SPECIAL OFFER: Mention The B-Town Blog and get ZERO ENROLLMENT FEES at Highline Athletic Club through December 30th (makes a GREAT GIFT)!

You know ’tis the season when Santa Claus himself arrives in Burien, delivered to the city’s big ol’ fir tree at Advertiser Economy Wiring/YB Tubless by B-Town’s finest firefighters!
Ol’ St. Nick made it safely of course, led this time not by a reindeer with a bright red shiny nose, but driven in a bright red shiny fire truck courtesy the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department.
Children from St. Francis School sang carols, goodies were given out, the tree was lit up, and our own Photographer Michael Brunk showed up to capture this Photo Slideshow:
Longtime owner Gwin Smith started this tradition in 1966 when he first bought Economy Wiring. In the first eight years of the tree lighting, Gwin climbed the huge fir tree himself to install the lights and then climbed back up in January to take them down. This changed some years ago, when the fire department took responsibility for installing and removing the lights.
You can see the festive bright lights on the big tree yourself every day around dusk at Economy Wiring’s location at 633 SW 148th Street (Phone: 206-244-7542).

Highline School District’s Camp Waskowitz will he holding an Open House Fundraiser in cooperation with sponsoring North Bend Christmas Tree Farms and the Puget Sound Youth Foundation from Noon to 2:30pm this Sunday, Dec. 6th.
Visit this Historic CCC facility and home to Highline School District’s nationally recognized environmental education outdoor school program, where you can make holiday nature craft items, have your picture taken with “Smokey the Santa,” and receive discount coupons to purchase your own U-cut Christmas Tree.
Just a short drive up I-90, off exit 34. All proceeds from this fundraising event will go to “camperships” to help financially struggling families send their children to Waskowitz Outdoor School.
North Bend Tree Farm Sponsors include: Keith and Scott Tree Farm and Crown Tree Farm.
Here’s more info from HSD’s Waskowitz website:
Founded in 1947 by a group led by future superintendent Carl Jensen, Waskowitz Outdoor School is recognized as a leader in the field of residential outdoor education. The Carl Jensen Environmental Education Center at Camp Waskowitz serves the students of the Highline Schools, as well as students from surrounding schools and districts, through environmental education and team building programs. When not in use by student groups, the facilities are available to outside groups for rent. Our office is located in Burien at the Woodside site at 18367-8th Avenue South. Our program site is located in North Bend, Washington at Camp Waskowitz. For more information on our programs or facility rentals, contact our office at (206) 631-7626.
Camp Waskowitz was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in 1935 at its present location and was named Camp North Bend. After the CCC was disbanded, the Camp was sold and later renamed after Fritz Waskowitz from the Chicago area. Fritz Waskowitz had been a football player and captain at the University of Washington before he became a pilot in World War II, was shot down and killed. The facility was renamed in his honor. Highline School District began sending students to Waskowitz in 1947 and later bought the property in 1957. Carl Jensen, then Superintendent of Highline School District, convinced the Highline High School student body to use funds raised for a new sports stadium to buy the property with a promise that the school district would reimburse their fund. Some time later, Superintendent Jensen and the Highline School District made additional purchases of surrounding land that increased the Camp Waskowitz acreage to its present 372 acres. Today, Camp Waskowitz is a State and National Historic Preservation site and is one of only two remaining CCC Camps in the United States with all of the original buildings still standing. Since the inception of the Outdoor Education program in 1947, over 200,000 students have experienced this school in the woods.

On this Thanksgiving 2009, we here at The B-Town Blog are ever-so-thankful for all our Readers, Advertisers and Contributors, and we send our heartiest, cranberry-soakiest, stuffingist, yammiest, Tofurkeyturdukenist wishes to everyone!
Unless something big happens, we’re all taking the day off to engorge ourselves with our dysfunctional families and friends.
Here are some of the things us B-Town Bloggers are thankful for this year:
“I’m thankful for the diverse range of people who call this area their home. I’m thankful for the smiling faces I see at local businesses that I frequent. I’m thankful for the gorgeous views and beaches of Three Tree Point. I’m thankful for the eagles I see circling in the skies above and that osprey I saw dive and catch a fish this summer. I’m thankful that there’s always something going on here, which means we’re never at a loss for content. I’m thankful for everyone who helps with this blog, which is growing every day. And last but not least, I am thankful for my family and friends!” – Scott Schaefer
Thankful that the farmer’s market is finally in its new home; and back where it started at when Lamont’s was sitting there empty. Thankful that there were only two beavers that had to be euthanized. Thankful for the new library, city hall & town square park and the vision that business and government leaders had way back when. Thankful that Discover Burien got a new exec director. Thankful that Scat the cat lived through his attack by the deranged man. Thankful for our customers at BTB. Thankful for our readers at BTB. - Janet Grella
“I am thankful we live in a nation with a free economy and a strong and indefatigable First Amendment, where an upstart neighborhood blog such as The B-Town Blog can birth itself, thrive and grow. This simply is not the case in many other parts of the world.” - Mark Neuman
The stuff I am thankful for are the people and staff that contribute to the blog and their genuine care and involvement in our communities.
The growth and progress of the amazing small business owners we have. We are lucky they are here. The readers!!! I couldn’t be more excited to hear of our numbers and see that people really care about the stories we are able to provide. I am thankful for the growth Burien has seen over the last year.. agree with the direction or not… the progress has been well achieved. - Gina Bourdage
I am thankful for family and pets, for good friends, for good health, and for work even in this recession. And for a suburban city like Burien that fosters a sense of community, and looks to the future with optimism. And for the men and women of the King County Sheriff’s Office/Burien Police Department and our firefighters who help protect us. And for the men and women from the Highline area who serve in America’s armed forces. And for the B-Town Blog, which provides a real source of news and information for the community. And for all the little things in life that matter a lot. - Ralph Nichols
“I’m thankful for all of the parks and beautiful trees (especially during the fall) that make Burien so very pretty and easy to enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving!!” – Amy Bouska
“I am thankful for everybody who contributed to our food bank fundraisers, knowing that everything they did will help the less fortunate in the area. I hope to see everyone at our next one at Tin Cellars on Tuesday, Dec. 8th!” - Bart Bryan
“I’m thankful for the ability to do whatever the hell I want – I’m going backpacking in Costa Rica soon! I’m also thankful for my youth and my irresponsibility! – Danielle Burton
Here’s some Turkeyday artwork to enjoy from our youthful, irresponsible artist Danielle Burton:
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Burien-ites have counted on Herr for their fresh-cut Christmas trees for many years, including back in the day when it was Herr Lumber. Still in the original lumber yard location, the Herr sister-in-laws, Diane Herr-Lorella and Lisa Herr continue the family tradition.

SPECIAL DEAL: And this year when you purchase a Herr Gift Card as a gift, when you mention The B-town Blog, they’ll add 10% to your card.
Let’s see…that means that if you buy a $50 gift card, they’ll put $55 on the card!

‘Tis the season to be jolly. The Christmas season starts this Friday, Nov. 27th when BTB Advertiser Herr Backyard Garden Center’s fresh Christmas trees go on sale starting at 10am.

It’s that time of year again, when the holiday trimmings start coming off, get put into big plastic storage bins in the shed, leaving behind a dilapidated and dried up, dangerously flammable Christmas tree with no place to go.
Here’s your B-Town Blog guide to how to recycle your tree:
BOY SCOUT TROOP #375 RECYCLING EVENT SAT./SUN. JAN. 3-4:
- Boy Scout Troop #375 will be recycling trees this Saturday and Sunday (1/3-1/4) from 10am – 3pm.
- Go to Herr Backyard Garden Center on SW 160th near First Ave South, and look for the Boy Scouts and wood chipper device.
- $5 fee per tree.
- Call Diane for more information: 242-2014.
JAN. 12-16 DES MOINES TREE-CYCLING EVENT:
- Allied Waste will be picking up Christmas trees for City of Des Moines residential curbside customers during the week of January 12 – 16 on the normal garbage pick-up day.
- More information: Contact Dave Steen at 206-870-6532
DO IT YOURSELF:
- Waste Management also takes Christmas trees, but we suggest cutting yours in 4′ lengths and tie it into bundles less than 2′ wide, and perhaps even placing it inside your yard waste container (especially with all the wind we’ve been getting lately – we don’t need tumbleweed Christmas trees clogging our roads now do we?).
- Pacific Topsoils, Inc. in Tukwila allows Christmas tree drop-offs; Call for Hours (206) 772-3091; located at 6000 S 129th Street in Tukwila.
- King County has several options for recycling Christmas trees. Call the King County Solid Waste Division Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, at 206-296-4466 or 1-800-325-6165 (toll-free).
We’re taking some time off to spend with our familes,
so look for the next update on Dec. 26th!

Then, from Virginia in the Hurstwood neighborhood comes this photo of one of her lit-up lawn reindeers doing its best “ostrich impression” with its head in the snow:

BTB Advertiser El Dorado West Retirement Community tells us they’re working to help the White Center Food Bank this month by placing a “Giving Tree” in their front lobby.
Everyone is invited to pick a card from the tree and purchase a gift or give cash donations for that person, then bring the gift back to be placed underneath it.
El Dorado is also partnering with the Evergreen High School Football Team’s “Wolverines” to be Santa’s Helpers.
The “Giving Tree” will be in the front lobby of El Dorado West through December 31st, so everyone has plenty of time to participate. You can stop by El Dorado during business hours – they’re located at 1010 SW 134th Street, at the corner of Amnbaum and SW 134th in Burien (map below).
“The Wolverines” will be delivering the gifts to the Senior Patrons of the WCFB on January 8th.
In March of ‘08 the WCFB implemented a “Seniors Only Day” for those over 60. Senior clients can receive food that helps them meet their unique dietary needs and builds in special social time.
Every month residents of El Dorado West volunteer during this time by serving coffee in what they call “Seniors Helping Seniors.”
And remember, food banks are really feeling the pinch of the recession, so any donation you can make is most appreciated, especially by your hungry neighbors.

Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department’s Lt. Inspector John Zilke is at it again!
As in years past, John is coordinating the very large and important Christmas Outreach Program in the Burien and White Center areas. Our very own Burien Fire Department (King County Fire District 2, Burien & Normandy Park) has been helping needy families during the holidays for over 20 years.
This translates to thousands of families enjoying a happy holiday because of Burien’s generosity.
This year, with the help of the White Center DSHS, 73 local needy families have been identified to be recipients of Burien’s largess. Thirteen local businesses have volunteered to be drop-off locations and are accepting NEW toys, canned food, gift cards and cash. Thanks to both our local Fred Meyer and your cash donations, each family will also receive a turkey dinner.
All donations must be made by the morning of December 22. Upon final collection, John and our firefighters match the gifts with the families’ needs at Sunnydale School, where they will be loaded up and delivered by Santa Claus and others on December 23.
To help out our fire department, eleven departments within Highline Medical Center have each adopted one family. Sylvester Middle School students and teachers will be conducting in-school food drives as part of this community effort.

Some of the toys and food delivered to the Burien Fire Department the first day of the outreach program. For locations on where you can donate, please see the list below.
John knows that this is a particularly tough year to ask for donations, but adds. “Your donations bring light to the holidays for a needy family.”

Four Studio Artists have teamed up and are having a 2008 Studio Artists Sale at Moshier Community Art Center on Sunday, Nov. 30th and Wednesday, Dec. 3rd at 430 South 156th Street (see map below).
They’ve all taught classes at Moshier and all have donated countless volunteer hours to this amazing facility, its students and the Special Populations program.
Some even attended art classes there with their parents when they were kids – another sign that Burien is fast becoming a major artists’ haven.
Here’s a video tour of Moshier for those unfamiliar with it:
We got an email from Hope Kerkof, Public Relations Director for Burien-based The Giving Zone, announcing a new fundraiser:
Due to the current economic crisis, many of America’s soldiers will not be able to afford to come home for the holidays.
The Giving Zone, a Burien-based nonprofit organization, is launching Operation Home for the Holidays, which is seeking people to donate airline miles or credit card rewards to help these soldiers come home.
Monte Regier, Executive Director of The Giving Zone, explains, “Watching the economic crisis daily on the news, it very apparent the military families, our soldiers, will be hit the hardest this holiday season. Therefore, the reason for launching Operation Home for the Holidays. We at the Giving Zone, already being an airline miles and credit rewards donation portal for charities, are in the perfect position to make a difference for our American Heroes. We are asking for America’s help. Even though main street has been hit hard in their pocketbooks, they can still make a difference and help our soldiers thru donating their airline miles.”
The Giving Zone is a global reward incentive trading portal where dollars, points and miles earned as incentives from air travel, hotel, credit card purchases and other incentive programs can be donated to Giving Zone’s registered projects. The Giving Zone is helping charities around the world ranging from food banks, homeless shelters, orphanages, medical research, national disaster relief projects, abuse shelters, missionaries, and many more.
Your airline miles and credit card reward points can be converted to cash equivalent for charities. Although this is a time cumbersome process for individual charities to do on their own, the Giving Zone is a mega website where non-profit organizations can be listed and people can go to the Giving Zone website to donate their miles and points or cash donations to the charity of their choosing. The Giving Zone takes care of all the details of converting the points to cash donations!
Make a difference today, and help America’s finest men & women come home for the holidays. Support Operation Home for the Holidays, donate your airline miles and credit card reward points at www.GivingZone.net.
