To my knowledge, until now the Puget Sound area has not provided a showcase for multiple styles of early jazz in one event.

As Burien emerges as one of the new vital places for the arts in the region, we pay tribute to the people who moved here and grew the community during the Big Band era, and offer a faithful rendering of the music of their youth.”

Remember these lyrics from the 1960’s?

“The eastern world, it is exploding
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’”

They’re from the protest tune “Eve of Destruction,” which reached #1 on the Billboard Top 40 in 1965.

It was sung by Barry McGuire, and you can see him this Saturday (July 18th) at 2pm at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien. He’ll appear the night before at the Auburn High Performing Arts Center.

To refresh your memory, or if you’re younger and dig the 60s, here’s a video of Barry singing the hit:

YouTube Preview Image

We chatted with Barry for a few minutes the other day, in anticipation of his trip to the Northwest.

“I’ve teamed up with John York, who used to be with the Byrds,” Barry said. “We’re calling the tour ‘Trippin’ the Sixties.’”

He recalled his early influences.

“I loved the Everly Brothers. I loved Richie Valens. I loved Elvis with his rock ‘n’ roll, but when he started doing the romantic songs I wanted to stick my finger down my throat.

“When I started to hear the work of Harry Belafonte and the Kingston Trio, that’s when I bought my first guitar.”

As a young man, Barry worked as a fisherman and a pipefitter before starting a musical career.

“One day I was in a recording studio. We rehearsed Eve of Destruction twice and recorded it once. There was some other band out in the hall waiting to use the studio, so that was all the time we got.”

Within a week the tune, written by P.F. Stone, was receiving heavy radio airplay in Los Angeles.

“Absolutely, tragically Eve of Destruction is more valid now than forty or forty-five years ago,” Barry said.

We asked him to tell us about, among others, his old friend Michael Nesmith.

“Mike’s doing great. He used to be my upstairs neighbor, before he was in the Monkees. One day he came down and pitched me on a song he’d written and asked me if I wanted to be a part of it. I said ‘No.’ It didn’t line up with my spiritual take on reality.”

Nesmith gave the song to the Stone Poneys, who along with their young singer, Linda Ronstadt, recorded and released it. Called “Different Drum,” the song reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967.

“Tell your B-Town Blog readers to bring a carload of friends to the show. It’s going to be a footstompin,’ hand clappin’ sing-along romp through the sixties.”

“Come on board the trippin’ train!” Barry says.

  • Saturday July 18th at 2pm: Highline Performing Arts Center (next to Highline High), Burien

ABOUT JOSHUA ROMAN
“Cellist Joshua Roman has taken this area by storm,” says Anthony Spain, music director, Northwest Symphony Orchestra. “Rarely has there been an outpouring ofenthusiasm of this magnitude about such a musician locally.”

The Seattle Times heralds Mr. Roman’s playing [with] “… heart-stopping beauty” and “… big, succulent tone and impassioned style” while the Seattle Post-Intelligencer declares “He is a musician of imagination and expressive breadth.”

Since winning the section principal chair at the Seattle Symphony in 2006 at the age of 22, Joshua Roman has become a favorite of Seattle music lovers. His pursuit of new challenges led him in 2008 to expand his horizons and embark full-time on his growing solo classical career. As a concerto soloist, he has performed with the Seattle Symphony, Spokane Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, and the Wyoming Symphony. The 2008 – 09 season will include, among others, performances with the Edmonton Symphony, Quad City Symphony, Stamford Symphony, and Northwest Symphony Orchestra. He frequently performs on instruments from the collection of David Fulton.

Dubbed a “Classical Rock Star” by the press, cellist Joshua Roman has earned a reputation for performing a wide range of repertoire with an absolute commitment to communicating the essence of the music at its most organic level. Since winning the Principal chair in the cello section of the Seattle Symphony at the age of 22, he has become a favorite of Seattle music lovers, with sold out solo and chamber performances throughout the city. When not performing in or in front of a Symphony Orchestra, Joshua is likely to be found on the stage of a club, performing music as varied as jazz or rock, as well as chamber music or a solo sonata by Kodaly or Bach.

Homeschooled until the age of 16, when he left to pursue his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Joshua received his Bachelor Degree in Cello Performance in 2004 studying with Richard Aaron. In 2005 he also received his Masters Degree from the CIM, studying with Desmond Hoebig, Principal Cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Joshua frequently performs on cellos from the collection of David Fulton.

Here are some videos featuring Joshua in action (our fave is the first, a rockin’ symphonic rendition of “Stairway to Heaven,” with Joshua on lead cello on the left):

Thursday afternoon, several unsuspecting cast members of Burien’s own Hi-Liners upcoming production of “Peter Pan” were arrrguably shocked when two authentic Seafair Pirates stormed in wearing full regalia, swords, axes, accents and costumes at their rehearsal space at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church.

The raiding scalliwags included “DC” and “ClapEye,” two real, working Seafair Pirates who even have their own trading cards (DC is on the left, ClapEye on the right)

The occasion was to help the young Hi-Liner cast, especially those playing the roles of pirates in “Peter Pan,” to better understand how to portray the part realistically.

“I bet you’re all waiting for me to utter that infamous 18th letter of the alphabet, aren’t ya?” quipped DC, whose duds made it obvious that he outranked his lowly co-hort, ClapEye. “But a true pirate never says such a letter, no. A true pirate needn’t stoop to Hollywood cliches and stereotypes, so there’s no need to say that dreaded 18th letter…”

After the entire room agreed by shouting the dreaded 18th letter, DC then entertained them with tales of what accents to use (cockney is best, even though it’s technically inaccurate but sounds ‘piratey’ enough), how to work with props, why pirates always exaggerate everything, how to handle a fake sword or gun, and why his clothes were fancier than ClapEye’s (he outranked him and therefore had more loot).

One highlight of the visit was when DC asked how the young pirates would take a swig from a (prop) Rum bottle. As quickly as you can do Jack Sparrow slurring the 18th letter of the alphabet, a young pirate-acting woman named Gillian Peterson jumped up to volunteer. Below is an animation of her swig:

Hi-Liner 'pirate' Gillian Peterson proves that she has what it takes to swig 'Rum' (actually cinnamon tea) like a true buccaneer.

The Hi-Liners’ “Peter Pan” starts flying at the Highline Performing Arts Center Sept. 6th.
