Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, dessert and drink; all donated by local businesses. Sponsored by Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and Discover Burien.

Suggested donations are:

• $15 (minimum) Adult Donation
• $10 (minimum) Child Donation

Empty Bowls events can be found around the country raising money to combat hunger in our communities. Moshier Art Center Potters have donated bowls to be filled with soup at this fun event…and all are invited!

Also please note that there will also be food barrels available if you’d like to bring a canned/non-perishable food donation for the food banks.

Burien’s Five Corners Albertson’s 1st-ever ‘Bowl for Hunger’ will be held from 9 a.m. – Noon this Sunday, Dec. 18th at HiLine Lanes.

Proceeds will provide holiday dinners to local families through the Highline Area Food Bank.

Cost is $20 Adult, $10 Children (12 & under), or $60 for a Family of up to six people.

“Every day, from 11am – 4pm, order any lunch and donate a can or box of food, and we’ll give you a free cup of soup or chili,” said Co-Owner Mick Purdy.

When Grand Central Bakery holds its grand opening of its new Burien location this Friday, Aug. 20th, it will donate a portion of the opening day’s proceeds to two local charities – the Highline Area Food Bank and the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence.

Doors are scheduled to open Friday at 7am, with closing time set for 6pm.

The bakery is located at 626 SW 152nd Street.

This will be the company’s third location in the Seattle area.

In a setting that would make the Publisher’s Clearinghouse jealous, a giant check was presented recently by the organizers of the “Cove to Clover” fundraiser 5k race to various charities at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub.

According to race organizer John Nelson, here’s a summary of the 2010 payouts:

Savings Remaining for Next Year: $1,000

HSFE (Pub Crawl): $3,480

Schools (Registration Competitition): $4,925

Limerick Contest: $500

Highline Food Bank: $27,649

Total Payout from Race: $36,554

Next year’s race date is set for March 11, 2011, so mark your calendars now!

Recently, children of Highline Public Schools participated in a district-wide food drive for the first time, bringing in 6,365 pounds of food and over $2,400 in cash, with all proceeds going to three area food banks: Highline, Des Moines and White Center.

“It’s a great start,” said White Center Food Bank’s Resource Coordinator Audrey Zemke. “Now that we have the basics in place, I’m excited to see what we can do next year!”

And, according to the Highline School District, they definitely will do it again next year.

Here is a breakdown of the results, by area:

The Highline Area Food Bank received a total of 2,684 pounds of food and $365.00.

• 943 pounds of food from Gregory Heights Elementary
• 461 pounds of food from CHOICE
• 239 pounds of food from Highline High School
• 511 pounds of food and $160.00 from Transportation
• 530 pounds of food from Facilities
• $205.00 from ERAC

The Des Moines Area Food Bank received a total of 1,384 pounds of food and $2,003.93.

• 1,384 pounds of food from Parkside Elementary.
• $1,805.00 from Des Moines Elementary’s penny drive
• $140.00 from ERAC

The White Center Food Bank received a total of 2,297 pounds of food and $39.00.

• 561 pounds of food from Cedarhurst Elementary
• 320 pounds of food from the Honor Society at Evergreen High School
• 1,237 pounds of food & $15.00 from Hazel Valley Elementary
• 100 pounds of food & $24.00 from ERAC
• 79 pounds of food from Shorewood Elementary
