On the evening of July 2nd, 4-year old Addison Strode was in her backyard getting ready to roast marshmallows with her parents, brother and sister when a terrible accident struck – her clothes caught on fire, causing burns on her head, neck, arms, hands, and thighs.

Addison now needs skin grafts on parts of her cheek, jaw, neck, both wrists, and the top of her right hand and fingers.

The Addison Strode Medical Fund was established to help with her medical expenses. Her parents, David and Sarah (Edwards) Strode grew up in the Des Moines/Burien area. Sarah owned New City Dance Company in Burien, before she moved to Graham, and she still comes to guest teach whenever she can.

Friends of Addison Strode are hosting a Garage Sale at Burien’s New City Dance Company the weekend of Aug. 13 – 14th.

UPDATE 11:30 a.m. 7/29/11: BTB Reader Kimberly Graff emailed us and said that there will be an additional benefit for the Strodes on Saturday, Aug. 13th at Hi-Line Lanes:

“My husband plays softball with Dave Strode and when we found out what happened to those poor girls, we decided to also put together a benefit.

August 13 starting at 1pm with a Noon checkin, there will be a benefit at Hiline Lanes Bowling Alley in Burien. There is a minimum of $20 donation to bowl 3-4 games with shoes included. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Strode family.”

Cub Scout Pack 955 is holding its annual Garage Sale and Car Wash this Saturday, June 11th from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

“Come have your car washed and shop the sale,” reads a press release. “There will be a wide variety of items from multiple families. This event is a fundraiser for the pack with proceeds from the sale funding programs for pack.”

Grace Lutheran Church is located at 22975 24th Ave South in Des Moines.

Burien’s Shorewood neighborhood will be holding its annual ‘Street of Sales’ from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, June 4th, and everyone’s invited.

This will be the 20th year of this huge neighborhood garage sale day, with numerous sales (50+ we’re told) happening throughout an entire walkable neighborhood.

Shoppers can enter Shorewood on 21st, 26th, 28th SW (all off of SW 116th) & 30th/Ambaum and maps will be available at all of these entrances.

Neighbors from Burien’s Three Tree Point area will be holding a “Flash” community Garage Sale this Saturday (Sept. 18), from 9am – 1pm, where numerous residents will be hosting their own sales at various locations.

It’s a loosely affiliated “group” garage sale with numerous “shops” that will wind down Maplewild Ave SW and back up Sylvester.

Several neighbors in this part of town have lots of good stuff to offer, and each family is hosting their own sale (more are welcome to join) and many are marking their way with bright pink signs or balloons. Most families will donate a portion of their proceeds to local charities that help the community.

You can expect to see great deals on kid’s stuff, designer furnishings, recreational equipment and more – all quality stuff!

And if you live around the area and want to join, please note that all you have to do is just put a sign out with some stuff, and open up at 9am (oh, and don’t forget to get some change).

So be sure to check it out, from Maplewild to South Beach – and look for signs for some sales just off the beaten path – bargains will be there!

A garage sale to benefit Burien’s Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center (RDCC) will be held Saturday, June 19th from 9am to 4pm at the center’s campus, located at 1033 Southwest 152nd Street.

There will be many unique items available and 100 percent of all proceeds will go towards helping the children.

For 88 years, Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center (RDCC) has served the needs of the community through its residential, home and community-based services.  Helping children, families, and communities achieve success and self-sufficiency is the primary goal of each of the programs RDCC offers.

In 1921, Judge King Dykeman saw many young women who needed support outside the home but there were no appropriate services for them. To address this problem, he founded Ruth School for Girls, which later became Ruth Dykeman Children’s Center. Originally, the agency was located in Seattle’s Ravenna district but moved to its present eight and a half acre campus on the shore of Lake Burien in 1931. Over the next 60 years, the agency slowly expanded its residential programs to serve boys and girls, ages 6 to seventeen, with serious behavioral, emotional and psychological disturbances. This is the same population being served today in the Behavioral Rehabilitation Services program.
