The Southcenter Rotary will be holding its 3rd annual Mardi Gras Auction this Saturday night, Feb. 11th at the Southcenter Doubletree Hotel.

Tickets are $60 per person.

“Give back to the community,” reads a poster. “Donate an item for the auction!”

For many high school girls, going to the prom is an event anticipated for years—but not going to the prom because the family can’t afford a formal dress can be devastating. 

This year, thanks to the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence, a number of high school students will be going to the prom in beautiful dresses donated by local organizations and members of the community. They will also have opportunity to select shoes, bags and other accessories contributed by the local community.

The Foundation is currently seeking donations from the public to help these students in need, and is asking people to please donate clean, new or gently used prom dresses, prom jewelry, and prom shoes to the following locations by March 1:

• Puget Sound Skills Center
• Mount Rainier High School
• Highline High School
• Highline Schools Foundation office (located inside ERAC)
• Evergreen High School?Aviation High School
• Tyee High School

They accept all sizes but have a special need for small and large and plus sizes. They also need accessories including shoes, handbags, and jewelry.

In its 4th Annual Project PROMise™, the Highline Schools Foundation collects beautiful new and gently worn formal dresses and gowns, shoes, and accessories from throughout our community and invites high school students in need to “go shopping” for the perfect dress for their prom.  The dresses are offered to the girls to keep, or they may return them to the Foundation to be used the following year.

The Des Moines Rotary Club is presenting this annual fun fundraiser, and guests will enjoy live music and great food while tasting wines from 20 Northwest wineries.

The festival kicks off on Friday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday and Sunday, with more wine tasting, food, and live music.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Corky Cellars in Des Moines (206-824-9462) or at www.dmrotary.org.

All proceeds fund the service projects of the Des Moines Rotary Club, including college scholarships, grants to local schools, safety and recreation programs for children, yard projects for elderly residents, support for the local food bank and the homeless, and projects to assist needy people as far away as South Africa and the Philippines.

If you’re not already familiar with it, C2C’s Angel Program allows people to sponsor as many students or non-profit organization members as they wish for a discounted rate of $25 each. Each sponsorship is a full registration with timing chip, bib and shirt.

According to the C2C website:

Free and reduced lunch students are encouraged to ask their school counselors for about a sponsorship. The counselor then simply emails angels@covetoclover.com requesting an Angel code (expires after one use) for the student. The student can use code to register online for no fee by entering it into the “Angel Code” field. Students are awarded sponsorships on a first-come/first served basis, so qualified and interested students should apply ASAP.

“To qualify for the Angel Program, each school or non-profit organization needs to have an official Angel Program facilitator,” said Organizer John Nelson. ”The facilitator can be a counselor, teacher, staff person of PTSA parent.”

To become a facilitator, simply attend the short (60-minutes) training session to be held on Monday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at:

You’ll learn:

1. How to sign-up need based kids for the race for no fee.
2. How to fit students for new Brooks running shoes (expert fitter will be on hand from Brooks Running).
3. Ideas of how to manage students attending the race.
4. How to promote the race at your school, to better compete in the School Registration Contest.

If you can’t attend the meeting, it may be possible (if time allows) to have a C2C representative do an individual training. Email angels@covetoclover.com to arrange a special training session.

The Sylvester PTSA has joined up with Highline Booster Club and PTSA for their annual auction benefiting Highline High School athletics and activities to be held at South Seattle Community College on Saturday, Feb. 25th.

10% of funds raised will go to Sylvester Middle School.

Additionally 10% of the “fund an item” activity at the auction will go to improve technology at Sylvester.

Tickets are $40 and registration closes February 21. To register, log on to www.piratesauction.com. Sylvester PTSA will be supplying desserts for the dessert dash. If you are interested in donating a dessert to feed 10, please contact Kelly Hovland at jkhovland@msn.com.

REMINDER: B-Town’s annual ‘Empty Bowls’ fundraiser event for the Highline Area and White Center Food Banks is TOMORROW – Friday, Jan. 27th – with lunch being served from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., and dinner from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.

This great event will be held at the Burien Community Center, located 14700 6th Ave SW.

Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, dessert and drink; all donated by local businesses. Sponsored by Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and Discover Burien.

Suggested donations are:

Empty Bowls events can be found around the country raising money to combat hunger in our communities. Moshier Art Center Potters have donated bowls to be filled with soup at this fun event…and all are invited!

The organization is very lean and is run by passionate, local volunteers.
