REMINDER: We’d like to remind everyone that our friends at the Highline Historical Society will be presenting “Soldiers in Petticoats: The Struggle of the Suffragettes” at the SeaTac City Hall this Sunday, Feb. 21st, beginning at 2pm.
Local actress Tames Alan will perform, dressed in full period costume and acting totally in character, to talk about the struggle of American women to gain the right to vote. From what we hear, Tames does an excellent job of acting so this should be entertaining.
Plus…it’s FREE.
Here are the details:
WHAT: Highline Historical Society’s “Soldiers In Petticoats: The Struggle of the Suffragettes”
WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 21st beginning at 2pm
WHERE: SeaTac City Hall, located at 4800 South 188th Street in SeaTac.
COST: This is a FREE event.
INFO: From a press release:
In the authentic clothing of a suffragette, Actress Tames Alan returns to talk about the struggle of American women to gain the right to vote. In 1867, the passing of the 14th Amendment defined “citizen” as “male,” thus denying women the right to vote. On this 100th Anniversary of women’s right to vote in Washington State, learn how American women adopted the militant tactics of English suffragettes to earn the right to vote and regain citizenship in their own country. Discover how the suffragettes influenced child labor laws, the use and dispersal of birth control, the Temperance movement, and the right of women to earn a college degree.
This engaging program is free.
It is brought to the community by the Highline Historical Society with the support of Humanities WA.
Immediately followed by a reception for the elected women of Highline.
Tames Alan is an actress, historian, and fashion history teacher who has combined her skills to create Living History Lectures for people of all ages. Since 1986, she has been touring her programs throughout the United States and Canada, where she is known for in-depth research and a lively presentational style. Tames studied theater and history at Willamette University in Oregon and theater at the American Conservatory Theater and the Dell Arte School in California. She taught fashion history at the Art Institute of Seattle, and is a historical consultant to museums, libraries, and historical festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Here’s what they have to say about their new pricing:
New Year, New Look, Better Pricing!
You may have been thinking for a while about remodeling your home—kitchen, bath, new windows or siding, maybe even an addition or dormer. It turns out that 2010 is a great time to do those projects and more. With lower prices from subcontractors and many material suppliers motivated to provide better pricing, it’s possible to complete high-quality projects with a trusted company like Ventana Construction for less than was possible in the last five years.
Adding to the cost savings, some building materials, like select windows, doors, insulation, and heating equipment, are eligible for a limited-time Federal Tax Credit, up to $1500. The materials have to be installed in 2010 to be eligible. There’s an even greater credit available for renewable energy products like solar.
Ventana Construction is an award-winning, full-service custom home and remodeling contractor. We are a family-owned business specializing in whole-house remodels and additions, with a focus on seamlessly blending the new areas with the existing home. We also do total facelifts on kitchens, baths and basements and build spectacular outdoor gathering places.
We are members of the Better Business Bureau, the Master Builder’s Association, the National Association of Home Builders and the Built Green program. We are donors to local non-profits and schools, and especially to Westside Baby, which provides essentials to local children in need.
Ventana Construction also offers a monthly workshop in our West Seattle office about the remodeling process. The Building a Better Home Workshop is held in conjunction with Goforth-Gill Architects and covers a broad range of information for those considering a project for their home. Our next workshop is January 14 at 6pm—please call to reserve your space.
To help ring in the New Year, Ventana Construction is offering a limited-time 25% discount off our regular markup on projects signed before March 31, 2010. That discount amounts to thousands of dollars on an average-size project and is an offer not likely to be repeated.
Follow the B-Town Blog link to find us, or call 206-932-3009 to talk with us about what you have in mind for your home in the New Year.

Veteran’s Day is this coming Wednesday, Nov. 11th, and Brown Bear Car Wash will be honoring vets and current service military (as well as spouses) with free car washes all day.
The nearest location is the one in Des Moines, located at 22706 Marine View Drive; others are in Federal Way, Kent, Auburn and Renton (see list below).

“Our organization is proud to honor veterans and service personnel,” said Brown Bear President and founder Vic Odermat, himself a Marine Corps veteran. “While the washes are free, we know that freedom is not. This is a way for us to show our support and gives us a unique opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to people who sacrifice so incredibly for our freedom.”
Odermat said the offer will operate on an honor system and no verification or documentation is required. Drivers should identify themselves as a current or former member of the military to the wash attendant.
Odermat started Brown Bear in Seattle in 1957 with one location. They now own and operates car washes throughout the Puget Sound area and Spokane.

“Two Wheels North,” a commemorative presentation written by Evelyn McDaniel Gib will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 10th for FREE at 2pm at the Burien Community Center, located at 425 SW 144th Street.
The play, a staged reading of a historic non-fiction event, features two fresh high school graduates that set out on their secondhand bicycles from Santa Rosa, CA in August of 1909 to take on the challenge of cycling from their home all the way north to Seattle for the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition.
With less than $6 bucks between them, they pedal, push, and walk 1,000 miles of primitive roads for 54 days. As you can probably imagine what roads were like 100 years ago, the intrepid boys encounter nearly every imaginable natural, mechanical, and human challenge on their one-speed bikes. While adventure is their primary lure, there is a promised purse of $25 from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (when it was still being printed, pre-internet) waiting for them if they can only make it to Seattle before the final day of the AYP.
- This presentation is sponsored by the Highline Historical Society and the Burien Little Theatre.
- Funding has been provided by 4Culture.
- Admission is FREE, and the production is family-friendly.
- The entrance to the community center parking lot closest to the theater is on 4th Ave SW between SW 144th and 146th Streets.
- Contact Burien Little Theatre to arrange handicapped or special needs seating, please email info@burienlittletheatre.com.

When the first self-produced demo was recorded the band had only been together a couple of weeks.
.. Now with numerous shows under their belts, Otherwise has began their new full length, self produced album, with songs that have been tested on some of coolest stages that Seattle has to offer. Otherwise is looking foward to continuing to do what they do best, writing great songs and playing the hell outta them live!

As a way to say “thank you” to area residents for over 52 years of patronage, Brown Bear will be offering free “Bear Essential” car washes to the public Thursday, August 27, from 8am to 8pm at all of the company’s automated “tunnel wash” locations in the Puget Sound area:

As in years past, our employees and car washes will be ready to efficiently meet the demand.”
Odermat started Brown Bear started in Seattle in 1957 with one location at 15th Ave West in Seattle. Brown Bear now owns and operates car washes throughout the Puget Sound area and Spokane. BTB Contributor Jim Branson sends us word that on Saturday, Aug. 22nd, at 2pm, there will be a free guided tour of Burien’s Eagle Landing Park, sponsored by the Washington Native Plant Society.
With any luck, the fledgling eagles (as seen in these rare videos) will be testing their wings in the area, as they have been for the past two weeks.
You can also learn about over 80 species of native plants in the park, the local geology and history of the land, as well as how fish and eagles improve the health of the forest.
The tour group will meet at 2pm at the kiosk at the parking lot, and the tour might take about an hour, depending on how many people show up and how many questions they have.
Bring a bottle of water, for when you get thirsty after climbing the stairs, and perhaps a pair of binoculars for the eagles.
Also please keep in mind there are no restrooms at the park, but Lake Burien School Park, five blocks away, has a restroom.
The tour will proceed, rain or shine, but the forecast is for perfect weather.
According to the Eagle Landing Park website:
Eagle Landing Park is a small six-acre park, in a quiet, residential Burien neighborhood. It opened on June 15th, 2005, and it is located at the west end of SW 149th Street, where it meets 25th Ave SW. The walk from the parking lot to the beach is about a quarter of a mile, dropping 275 feet in elevation.
The goal of the park is to provide visitors with an intimate experience of nature close to an urban center. Instead of driving for an hour to feel at home in the woods, you can have this experience within walking distance of City Hall. The park feels much larger than it is (it’s roughly the same size as Lake Burien School Park) because the trees screen out the surrounding homes and provide the illusion of endless forest.
Adding to the impression of untamed wilderness are the screams of the eagles, who have been nesting in a tree in the middle of the park since 1989. The park is home to over fifty species of native plants, and volunteers are working to remove invasive plants such as ivy and reintroduce more species of native plants. Visitors have seen woodpeckers, hawks, raccoons, otters and foxes, and you may see these creatures if you keep your dog on a leash and walk quietly along the trail.
Eagle Landing Park is an escape from hectic urban living, but like the flowers pictured above, it is a fragile beauty dependent on the good will of visitors to remain unspoiled.

This Friday night (Aug. 14th), starting around 8pm, prepare to put your complimentary 3D glasses on and get transported for FREE on a “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the first of the two outdoor movies in Burien Parks’ “Music and Movies in the Park” summer series at Lake Burien School Park, SW 148th & 16th Ave SW.
This is a family-friendly 3D film starring Brendan Fraser, who has ties to the northwest – he went to Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle before hitting the bigtime in the 90s.
Here’s the film’s synopsis:
An exciting adventure based on the classic Jules Verne novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” Journey to the Center of the Earth stars Brendan Fraser (Crash, The Mummy) as a science professor whose untraditional hypotheses have made him the laughing stock of the academic community. But on an expedition in Iceland, he and his nephew stumble upon a major discovery that launches them on a thrilling journey deep beneath the Earth’s surface, where they travel through never-before-seen worlds and encounter a variety of unusual creatures. Journey to the Center of the Earth is directed by Academy Award-winning visual effects veteran Eric Brevig (Total Recall, Pearl Harbor) from a screenplay by Michael Weiss and Jennifer Flackett & Mark Levin.
The movie is scheduled to start at “Dusk,” which means around 8-8:30pm-ish, and viewers are asked to bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and popcorn.
But don’t worry about bringing your own 3D glasses – the fine folks at Burien Parks will be providing those!

With only two sizzlin’ summer shows left, make sure you check out the hottest FREE ticket in the Waterland City Wednesday night (Aug. 12th) – Handful of Luvin, playin’ just down the road a bit at the Des Moines Beach Park beginning at 7pm.
Fresh off the largest concert turnout to date with last week’s performance by The Paperboys, Snohomish Artists Guild and the Des Moines Arts Commission will play host to this northwest band, who will play rain or shine! If the sky does open up, the Des Moines Parks Dept. has arranged for an alternate site indoors, so come to the park to support wonderful live music.
Be sure to bring a chair or blanket and dress for our NW summer weather, and don’t miss your chance to see great talent in our community free of charge. Des Moines Beach park is located at 22030 Cliff Avenue South (see map here).
Here’s more info about Handful of Luvin’:
The band ‘Handful of Luvin’ originally began in the spring of 2002 when front man David John & Andrew Joslyn (fiddler) met at Western
Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. At the time David John was promoting his own second self-produced solo album ‘Blue Room,’ and had a considerable fan following in Seattle and Bellingham. Andrew on the other hand was a pretty prominent classical musician until he decided to pursue freer styles with fiddle playing such as Scots Irish, blues, and rock fiddle/violin. When the two met, and began playing with each other, Andrew’s fiddle complimented David’s unique guitar work and soulful vocals perfectly. In the fall of 2003 they began performing together & immediately realized the potential of their sound, and quickly set about forming a band.
Through various transformations & several musicians (much love and Thanks to Billy Hooper, David Stern, Becky, and Logger), the band eventually came across Patrick Files late in 2004 (bass guitar). Pat’s own background with funk, rock, and thrash metal brought a whole new dimension of musical variety into the band.
Within two months, in early 2005, Pat’s friend Mike Knight (drummer) was recruited as the final member into the band. Originally Mike was apart of the indie-jam rock band ‘Carraway’ and produced several recordings with them. Within HOL he is able to use his extensive expertise with the drums & percussion, and also has an uncanny attention to detail which keeps the band on point.
Every member of the band brings their own entirely unique background with music to the band whether its gypsy, folk, funk, reggae, or rock. When these guys come together, in any setting, it is never disappointing. Handful of Luvin’ has an energy that is unparalleled as well as contagious. ln the end Handful of Luvin’ is a number of things: it is what the fans and the audience are left with after a HOL show; and it is about five very diverse musicians who love music and try to communicate that to everyone.
Here’s a handful of videos of Handful of Luvin’::
Next Wednesday, Aug. 19th, will be the final show in the series with The Kim Archer Band.
Visit www.desmoineswa.gov/artscommission for information on upcoming arts opportunities like Comedy Night on Oct. 9th and the Michael Powers concert on Nov. 17th. Tickets and information for these events will be available to at the arts commission booth at the Beach Park Concerts.
See you at the park!

This Thursday night (Aug. 6th) will be the final FREE music concert of Burien Parks’ Music and Movies in the Park, this week featuring The Staxx Brothers
Here are the details:
WHAT: Music and Movies in the Park featuring The Staxx Brothers
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 6th from 6pm-8pm
WHERE: Lake Burien Scool Memorial Park at SW 149th and 16th SW
INFO: From their website:
“Left to their own devices with Scott Colburn (Arcade Fire, Animal Collective) at his voodoo lair, an old Finnish church turned recording studio, The Staxx Brothers return with a vengence on We are The Blaxstonz. It’s an album that borders on black comedy with heavier social undercurrents; by now as much Chappelle & Carlin as Big Boi and Jagger. It’s a good time record that helps you dance through the tough ones. It’s HARD ASS SOUL. It’s ice cold. This is the way they used to make records. Step real close and you can detect that heavy scent of Howlin’ Wolf runnin’ wild through a Hip Hop landscape…I can still hear him laughin’.” – Dylan Van Keef
Some of their tunes to bother your co-workers with (crank it up!):
Here are some Staxx Brothers. videos:
As mentioned, this is the finale in this music/concert series, and the next free entertainment in the Music and Movies in the Park series will be next Friday night, Aug. 14th around 8:30pm with the film Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D (and yes, glasses will be provided)!

More art is happening at Burien’s Interim Art Space, and this Saturday, Aug. 1st is no exception – the classic Fritz Lang silent film “Metropolis” will be shown, with a “modern reinterpretation” of the soundtrack by Ludington GT.
Music and BBQ starts at 6pm and the movie at 10pm, and Viewers are asked to BYOC – Bring Your Own Chair(s).
Here are the details:
WHAT: Screening of Fritz Lang’s silent classic “Metropolis” with modern-day “techno funk” live soundtrack courtesy Ludington GT
WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 1st; Music starts at 6pm, movie at 10pm
WHERE: Burien Interim Art Space, located at 5th Ave SW and SW 150th (just north of the new Town Square)
COST: It’s FREE, but BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR(S) (and we presume, food to BBQ/eat)!
INFO:
“Join us for a fun night with a new look to the Classic Silent Film Metropolis via Ludington GT Techno Funk Soundtrack! Come join us! and don’t forget your chair!”
If you’ve never seen this 1927(!) silent sci-fi classic, here’s a synopsis from IMDB:
It is the future, and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don’t know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don’t have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the “thinkers” dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees…
…and here are some clips (just keep in mind that Saturday’s soundtrack will be different):
Here’s a taste of Ludington GT’s music:

One way to cool off this Thursday night (July 30th) will be to head on over the Lake Burien School Memorial Park for another fine evening of FREE music courtesy Burien Parks’ Music and Movies in the Park, this week featuring “Hillbilly Jam Grass at its best” from Deadwood Revival.
Here are the details:
WHAT: Music and Movies in the Park featuring Deadwood Revival
WHEN: Thursday, July 30th from 6pm-8pm
WHERE: Lake Burien Scool Memorial Park at SW 149th and 16th SW
INFO: From their website:
If you put a Georgia theater chick, a California drummer-turned-banjo player, a Deadhead bass player and a bluegrass fiddler in the same room and say….”alright folks… make some music” …you’d think that the result would be…well… interesting to say the least. Well, it is far more than interesting. It’s Deadwood Revival. A most unlikely group of musicians join together to make some of the most unassuming, honest “feel good” music filled with the spirit of old-time Appalachia, soulful American roots and a hint of jam-band improvisation.
Deadwood Revival came onto the scene as a duo in early 2005 when Kim Trenerry and Jason Mogi, after years of co-fronting their own folk rock jam band found a new love…that of old time Appalachian music. Combining their rock background with old time gave Kim and Jason their reputation as “one of the hottest duos around”. Hundreds of concerts and festivals, four west coast tours, and two cd’s later…Kim and Jason reconnected with long time friend, bassist Ches Ferguson in June 2007 and the duo became a permanent trio. In late 2007, DwR met former “Looking Glass” fiddler, Julie Campbell, who brings her fierce fiddle playing to the DwR sound at select concerts and festivals.

At the Spotlight in Seattle:
Manooghi Hi, one of the hottest new bands in the Northwest, will be bringing their eclectic mix of western rock and eastern (mostly Indian) music to “Music & Movies in the Park” this Thursday night from 6:30pm to 8pm at Lake Burien Park, located at SW 149th and 16th SW.
Bring a blanket and a picnic dinner and enjoy some amazing (and free) music!
From their website, here’s a description of Manooghi Hi:
With visions of melding her classical Indian, Sufi, and mouth percussion (bols and solkattu) with a heavy rock sound, million-seller-pop-princess, Mehnaz, tripped all the way to Seattle on a whim to stay with friends of the family and work on a new sound–more rock, less schlock.
“There’s a lot of hybrid stuff in Bombay, but I was looking for something more heavy and real. To tell the truth: I wanted to play in a band.”
Fate tossed her a handful of Seattle’s theatrical rock avant guard: Composer/Arranger Keyboardist Mark Nichols (Little Boy Goes to Hell, “Awesome,” “How to Survive the Apocalypse”, Return of the Frog Queen, Nelson Sings Nilsson, Walkabouts), Producer/guitarist Todd Fogelsonger (Soul Pimps, Trillian Green), Bassist Jimmy Thomas (Squirrels, Type-A), Singer Ava Chakravarti (Prudence Dredge, Mass Hypnosis), Drummer John Hollis (Hedwig, Sissyfist, ButtrockSuites, Ian Moore etc..), and Percussionist Jarrod Kaplan (Trillian Green, Dan Bern, Cirque Du Soleil, Hanuman, Devachan..)
Over the course of a few Seattle visits, they created the band, Manooghi Hi (a dialectic word meaning roughly “stuff” as in “move your manooghi out of the hallway before I move it myself,” or “that was some serious manooghi.”)
They also created a handful of manic and oft cartoony–though ceremoniously rampant–hybrid-Hindi-heavy classics like “Kismet”, “Kali”, “Om Baba”, “Hum”, “Bubbles”, and their ultimate Bombaliscious deluge, “Manooghi Hi.” Both Mehnaz and the band may have staggered blindly into something that actually works.
As a friend said it (best): “Holy Sacred Cow!!!?” and another: “I feel like I’ve been baptized in another language by some people I’ve never met.”
Upon hearing the strains of “Om Baba” for the first time. Mouths agape, friends suggest Kurt Cobain has come back from the dead as a yoga instructor. Friendly love aside, If anything happened here on their debut record, titled simply, “HI”, it is the explosion of a joyous and irreverent head-banging soup.
Not the world music your mama used to meditate to.
Here are some videos that will probably make you want to pack a picnic basket immediately and reserve a good spot NOW:
