The Highline Vintage Jazz Festival is the brainchild of Burien Arts’ board member and fixture in the local music scene, Lance Haslund. Lance is a part-time musician and lifetime lover of all music, particularly jazz. He has been promoter of small concerts in the Burien area for several years and says:
“The Highline Vintage Jazz Festival will fill a void in the local festival scene.
To my knowledge, until now the Puget Sound area has not provided a showcase for multiple styles of early jazz in one event.
As Burien emerges as one of the new vital places for the arts in the region, we pay tribute to the people who moved here and grew the community during the Big Band era, and offer a faithful rendering of the music of their youth.”
Burien Arts is a local non-profit dedicated to enriching the community by providing engaging and innovative arts programming to the Highline region and beyond. Vitally active since 1965, Burien Arts maintains a crucial role in the artistic fabric of the community.
Tickets to the event are available online through Brown Paper Tickets (www.brownpapertickets.com) or by calling: 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the festival.

INFO: “Celebrating the end of the harvest season, this annual event features live entertainment throughout the day, crafts, food and a carnival. The festival is focused on Burien Town Square at SW 152nd Street and 5th Ave SW. Estimated attendance: 20,000″
Burien’s Oktoberfest will feature much more than just a Yodeling Dominatrix and beer gardens (although there will plenty of that) – this year there will also be lots of food, arts and crafts, as well as a carnival with rides, and live entertainment.
BTB Advertiser Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub will also be holding their own festival, with an outdoor beer garden and live music from 2pm to 9pm with the Mellifluous Cephyres, then ramping up with Jonathan Kimball and capping the evening with Sunderlyn. They’ll be serving their own specialty beers brewed on site, and will also be selling bratwurst and other appropriate foods.
Hoist a pint of suds or a glass of wine in true Octoberfest fashion at one of two outdoor beer and wine gardens. Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub will be serving from Friday night through Sunday in front of the restaurant at 435 SW 152nd Street. Mick’s will dish up live entertainment Friday night through Sunday, plus German menu specials and outdoor barbecue Saturday and Sunday.
Shop the festival’s 50-plus booths for unique arts and crafts, plus tasty eats such as Mexican and Hawaiian fare, hamburgers, hotdogs and more. Some vendors from the Burien Farmers Market will also be on hand.
Also on Saturday morning join other walkers for an easy 2-mile stroll to help Hospitality House’s shelter for homeless women (see our previous coverage here), located in Burien. Dogs on a leash are welcome.
Register for the eight annual StreetWalk for the Homeless at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 26 for $20 at SW 152nd Street and Fifth Place SW at Burien Town Square. The walk starts at 10 a.m. Afterward there will be a prize drawing for walkers who raise the most money through sponsorships. For sponsorship forms, call (206) 243-1597.
Sponsored by the Discover Burien Association, the event will center on Burien Town Square at Southwest 152nd Street and Fifth Place Southwest in downtown Burien. Discover Burien is a nonprofit organization that works on the economic development and marketing of the city.
For more information, call (206) 941-7199 or go online to www.discoverburien.com.
As for Manuela Horn, Burien’s Yodeling Dominatrix, she’s also a professional actress and multi-talented performer who has done gigs for Teatro Zinzanni and many others. She’ll yodel her way into your beer-stained heart on Saturday from 5:30pm to 6pm on the main stage.
(Oh, and look for us there as well – we’ll be in our B-Town Blog t-shirts at a booth, or perhaps even a beer garden or two…)
Burien’s annual “Arts-A-Glow” festival lit up the evening at Town Square Saturday night (Sept. 12th), with lots of do-it-yourselfers making amazing, one-of-a-kind lanterns, along with performers in costumes, stilt-walkers, belly dancers, musicians and much more.
Photographer Michael Brunk was there to capture both visual and audio elements, which he has built into the following “SoundSlideshow”:

If it’s September, it must be time for the third annual Oktoberfest at Burien’s Elliot Bay Brewhouse and Pub (a returning BTB Advertiser) – that’s right, following in the German tradition, Oktoberfest starts in September! Big difference is that the Germans celebrate for 16 days, into early October.
Elliott Bay’s celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26th.
Michael Goldsmith, General Manager of Elliott Bay, sat down with BTB earlier this week to lay out their plans to be a part of Burien’s Oktoberfest. The aim is to provide the city of Burien and surrounding area with a “family friendly area-wide celebration in the broadest sense.”
“We’re really excited about the music,” said Michael. “We’re presenting live music inside and outside from 2-9pm.”
Here’s a line up of the bands:
- Mellifluous Zephyrs will be playing traditional German Polka music on wind instruments
- Jonathan Kimball will play Folk/Blues and Acoustic
- Sunderlyn, “a powerpop altrock band” according to their website
In addition to the music, Elliott Bay has developed a special Oktoberfest Menu. In the true Oktoberfest tradition they’re setting up beer tents outside with “festival-style tables.” This means that you may have to sit with strangers, but the more you get into the spirit of Oktoberfest, the less strange they might be to you.
Elliott Bay is Burien’s only award-winning brewery, making the beers their customers enjoy right on the premises. Such popular local beers as:
- B-Town Brown
- Highline IPA
- Hop von Boorian
This family-friendly neighborhood pub offers a full pub menu, large party facilities, tournament-sized shuffleboard tables, along with party platters and beer to go. Monday-Wednesday they’re open to from 11am-10:30pm. Thursday-Saturday ’til midnight. The kitchen closes 30-minutes before the doors are locked. On weekends they open up early for brunch at 9:30am. They’ve also got a great happy hour with great happy hour food and beers.
If you can’t wait ’til Elliott Bay’s Oktoberfest, stop by and give ‘em a try. Then stop back on Saturday, Sept. 26th and enjoy the fun, food, ice cold beer, music…and make some new friends!
You’ll find Elliott Bay Brewhouse and Pub at 255 SW 152nd, right at the corner of 4th Ave SW. For more information, call (206) 246-4211 or visit their website here.

We already told you about our neighbor to the north, White Center, and its “Jubilee Days” street party this coming weekend, and now we’d like to tell you about another neighbor’s festivities – that ‘hood to the south, Des Moines, is celebrating its 50th Birthday this weekend with a HUGE bash including wooden boats, strong man/woman competition, farmers market, parades, a sock hop and much more!
The series of family-friendly events begins Friday night, July 17th at 5pm, and continues all day Saturday, July 18th, and will include:
- A Farmers Market from 10am – 2pm (at the South Marina Park – drop by and see us at our sister site The Waterland Blog’s booth)

Des Moines has been a regional destination for the Puget Sound region since 1904 when Redondo Beach was the Northwest’s premier resort, drawing thousands visitors annually. Today, that beach town feeling still exists. Visitors can smell the sea air, dip their toes in the water, stroll along the boardwalk and enjoy the area’s charming shops and restaurants. To celebrate its 50-year heritage (Des Moines officially became a city on June 17, 1959), the city is hosting a series of events throughout the summer, including the Seafair festivities, to capture the feeling of the nostalgic getaway.
Need more evidence of the city’s fun and quirky personality? Look no further than this year’s strongman competition in which feats of strength will be demonstrated by both men and women via a tire flip (100 feet total distance), axle clean and press, farmer’s walk (max weight carried for 200 feet) and keg loading (minimum 4-5 kegs loaded on to a 50 inch platform within 60 seconds). Last year, 40 competitors competed in five events and anticipation is high for this year’s competition.
Visitors will also be treated to sailboat races, a 50th birthday fun run, and performances from the Wenatchee Youth Circus – considered to be one of the top four non-professional groups in the country. Most events will be free, including the classic car and wooden boat show, Seafair parade, and the strongman competition. Minimal costs are associated with other events, such as tours of the Merrie Ellen and W. N. Ragland ($5) and tours of a new 68 foot Ocean Alexander yacht.

Burien’s annual Father’s Day Car Show will be Sunday, June 21st from 10am to 4pm, with plenty of cool cars, retro tunes, a chili cook-off and guy-pleasing grub, plus a new charity poker tournament and raffle.
Ogle amazing cars from yesterday and today along SW 152nd Street between 4th Ave SW and 8th Ave SW in downtown Burien. The event has become so popular the action will expand onto 6th Ave SW and into the new Burien Town Square.
Buffed-up beauties in the car show will compete for top billing in nine outside-the-box categories:
- Mayor’s Choice
- Best Project Car
- Under Hood Artwork
- Most Likely To Go On A Date In
- People’s Choice
- Best Interior
- Auto Dealers’ Choice
- Best Paint Job
- Lowest Odometer
Bet on the health of local youth sports by sitting in on the brand new Hold’em for Highline poker tournament or buying a 50/50 raffle ticket. All proceeds from the two activities will go to the Highline Boosters, a local nonprofit organization that benefits Highline High School athletics.
From Noon to 2pm, savor free samples of potentially prize-winning eats from the Chili Cook-Off. The first-place chili will be awarded $250 plus a traveling trophy for a year, second place earns $100, third place $50, and People’s Choice $100. Teams competing in the Chili Cook-Off must send in a completed preregistration form and a $25 fee. Chili must be cooked onsite and provide 500 samples plus tastes for the judges. The cook-off will supply each team with a table, propane gas burner and 500 napkins, spoons and tasting cups. To register, click here to download a PDF form.
Catch the sounds of the ‘50s and ‘60s spun by a KJR radio DJ while grabbing an affordable bite at the car show’s hotdog cart or chilling with a Hawaiian shaved ice. Nearby businesses offer dining alternatives and some will feature in-store specials.
Participants in the car show and the poker tournament may either register in advance or on Father’s Day. Preregistration fees are $15 for the car show and $20 for the poker tournament. Registration on Father’s Day will cost $20 and take place between 8am and 10am at SW 152nd St. and 8th Ave SW. Same-day registration for the tournament is $25 at the Hold ‘em tent. To register, click here to download a PDF form.
Burien Auto Row is the primary sponsor of the event, which is being presented by Discover Burien, a nonprofit organization that works on the economic development, promotion and marketing of the city. Except for the charity poker and raffle fees, all funds collected will go toward operation of the event and Discover Burien.

Burien is more than just a town with a funny German name and a Strawberry Festival.
It holds a deep history of togetherness and community festivals. This is best seen in the long-forgotten springtime Caterpillar Festival. All residents of Burien know those annoying tent caterpillars which come out every spring and devour all the plants in sight. These bugs, which are seen as a nuisance, were once given a full day of celebration.
In the early 1910s, the young town of Burien started celebrating the emergence of the several species of caterpillars after the start of spring. Along with the common tent caterpillars, several farms of silkworm caterpillars were located in Burien. In the early 1900s Burien and several other towns along Puget Sound had become well known for their silk; an industry brought to the area by the Asian immigrants. The yearly festival showed Burien’s love of these insects whose industry played a large role in establishing their city.
The festival mainly consisted of food, music, and caterpillar-themed games. One of the most popular events was the caterpillar races where residents would put their insects to the test against other home-raised caterpillars. In the 1920s, the caterpillar festival was canceled as the Puget Sound silk industry collapsed and the celebration was no longer family oriented. Local men had turned the festival into a day of gambling on caterpillar races.
With the silk industry collapse, the silkworms and caterpillars were soon considered pests like they are now. Burien residents hated the infestation of caterpillars which debilitated the town. The Toonerville Trolley, which ran down Ambaum from Seattle to Burien, was frequently shut down due to the pests. The trolley would lose traction and often gave passengers an exciting ride down hills due to the squished caterpillars which covered the rails. The caterpillars of the area led to the demise of the trolley as passengers frequently had to push it back up the slick caterpillar-covered hills.
As April brings in caterpillar season, remember the role that these fine cretures once played in the development of Burien. The silk industry put Burien on the map.
These caterpillars were once celebrated every spring, but are now seen just as nuisances which destroy our plants and stop our light rail systems.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Stefan Hovland is a Burien resident who is currently attending the University of Washington, where he is a history major. He is single-handedly attempting to bring back this long-forgotten Caterpiller Festival in May, and asks that anyone finding caterpiller tents over the spring to carefully save them in a plastic container and deliver them directly to his home. In his spare time, Stefan helps covertly destroy native species throughout Burien's Parks while spreading seeds for ivy and blackberry bushes. He also interns as a botanist for the Highline Hysterical Society.]

Some scenes from Saturday’s annual Artwalk (videos coming soon):
Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.
Saturday’s annual Artwalk (aka Arts A-Glow) was a resounding success, with a wide variety of art, artists, musicians, performers and more spread throughout downtown Burien on SW 152nd all day long.
We had a booth outside Jay Lauris Jewelry and met quite a few friendly neighbors, then managed to find time to sneak away to enjoy a few of the festivities ourselves.
Hours of video were shot, dozens of photos taken, all of which will be edited and doled out over the next several days here, so be sure to check back often.
Some of our fave moments of the day included:
- Stumbling upon an acrobat rehearsal in the parking lot of Karuna Yoga
- Writing messages on the glass to the artists living inside the storefront windows
- Seeing autistic artist Chris Stiles’ original paintings up close at Sterling Savings Bank
- Seeing children dance the night away during the first-ever BlogstockAPalooza Music Fest
- Gathering new “slogan ideas” for Burien and reading them aloud between bands at BlogstockAPalooza (which we’ll be revealing over the next several days so stay tuned…)
- Watching great local bands with distinctly different original styles
- Happening upon the Ballard Ave Jug Busters, who played good ol’ boy honkytonk music on the sidewalk outside the Continuing Education office on SW 15nd:
Busy and beautiful day in B-Town today, and here are some of the artsy, family-style, rockin’ activites and events going on:

Kid’s Day at the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Dept. goes until 3pm with all sorts of interactive fun, educational games & food.

Young Jasmine helps wash cars at a fundraiser for the kids of Brian Storer at
B & E Meats parking lot at the intersection of Ambaum Blvd. & SW 150th until 4pm today.

Come drop by the B-Town Blog booth, located right in front of Jay Lauris Jewelry at 920 SW 152nd. Robert Simpson-Clark is the Owner/Designer who’s been in Olde Burien for 35 years. JoAnn Davey is a Designer, and above is a photo of her cute-as-heck Shitzu “Babee,” who will be greeting people at their wine tasting session, which goes on all day and costs just $2. On display today as part of Artwalk are photos by Robert, so come on up, check out the art, say hi to us B-Town Bloggers as well as Babee while having a sip!

Artwalk/Arts A-Glow on SW 152nd all day, with three artists living in the
windows of Karuna Yoga until around 11pm tonight.

And of course, B-Town BlogstockAPalooza rocks Olde Burien tonight starting at 6pm, with two areas of extended outdoor seating at The Mark Restaurant and The Tin Room!

The fun kicks off with the humorous-but-talented Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band performing “Ya Sousa You Betcha“ type music this Thursday at Lake Burien School Park, located at SW 148th & 16th Ave SW.
Here’s a video clip of the Sousa Band from the Folklife Festival:
Why does Seattle’s Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band have an ever-expanding cult following?
They draw enormous crowds at the summer Ballard Locks concert series.
They’ve been forced to add additional shows to their sold-out Sousa’s birthday celebrations.
Hundreds of rabid fans seek them out at the Northwest Folklife Festival.
What is the mysterious allure of this band?
Here’s the full lineup:
