At this “Latinos en Movimiento” (Latinos on the MOVE) event, residents will showcase their personal narratives through a new online map of King County to drive home the impact of second-hand smoke. Sea Mar Community Health Centers will host the event.

WHAT: Latinos on the MOVE using maps & stories to support smoke-free areas in Burien.

WHEN: Wednesday, December 7th, 2011; Reception and dinner at 6:30. The planned presentation will begin at 7:00.

INFO: Burien residents will present their digital stories and ask for support to increase and enforce areas free of tobacco. The presentation will be followed by responses and Q & A. “This event presents a unique opportunity for Burien’s elected officials, property managers of private and public multi-unit housing, and King County Metro to listen and respond to the priorities voiced by Latino community leaders and members of Burien,” said Antoinette Angulo, Director of Preventive Health Services for Sea Mar Community Health Centers.

The event will highlight community support for Burien’s recent decision to make all parks smoke-free and to illustrate the need for additional tobacco regulation and enforcement in housing and public transportation.

Latinos on the MOVE is sponsored by Sea Mar and is part of Mapping Our Voices for Equality (MOVE), an online map and digital storytelling website that launched October 20th, 2011 with funding from Public Health – Seattle & King County. MOVE features on-going changes that improve healthy eating and physical activity and create tobacco-free environments in King County.

Burien’s Hospitality House will be holding its 10th annual ‘Walk for the Women’ fundraiser starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24th.

Burien’s Momentum Music and Dance Academy will be presenting the full-length ballet version of ‘Cinderella’ on Wednesday and Thursday, June 29-30, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The ballet opens in Cinderella’s villa, where she is taunted by her Stepsisters and then mysteriously greeted by her Fairy Godmother. Audience members will be mesmerized by the Magical Garden, Season Fairies and Dragonflies. Act II includes Courtiers, Mazurka dancers and Princesses at the legendary ball where Cinderella meets the Prince. There are three acts total, with two brief intermissions.

The third annual Burien Wellness Fair will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Burien Town Square, and this year’s theme will be “Healthy Activities for your Mind, Body and Spirit!”

Along with exhibitors, kids’ entertainment, and lots of giveaways, Collins Chiropractic is teaming up with fitness instructors from the Burien Parks Department to provide some informative wellness seminars and exercise demonstrations to give people of all ages ideas for healthy living.

The half hour seminars begin at Noon, with “Eat Well”, which includes some food samples. At 12:30 the ten-minute fitness demonstrations begin, with “Sitting Fit.” This demonstration is appropriate for people of all ages to participate.

The Highline Schools Foundation’s 3rd Annual Project PROMise™ will be held this weekend at the Southcenter Doubletree in Tukwila.

At this event, the Highline Schools Foundation collects beautiful new and gently worn formal dresses and gowns, shoes, and accessories from throughout our community and invites high school students in need to “go shopping” for the perfect dress for their prom. The dresses are offered to the girls to keep, or they may return them to the Foundation to be used the following year.

For many high school girls, going to the prom is an event anticipated for years—but not going to the prom because the family can’t afford a formal dress can be devastating. This year, thanks to the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence, a number of high school students will be going to the prom in beautiful dresses donated by local organizations and members of the community.  They will also have opportunity to select shoes, bags and other accessories contributed by the local community.

WHAT: Highline Schools Foundation’s 3rd annual Project PROMise.

WHEN: Friday, April 22nd and Saturday, April 23rd.

WHERE:  Southcenter Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel (16500 Southcenter Parkway, Tukwila)

Over 120 girls from the Highline School District will “shop” for the perfect dress for their prom at no cost to them! Each student will be given a personal shopper—alterations are provided by local seamstresses.

The mission of the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence is to provide resources to help students in our district succeed. We support academic achievement, classroom grants, college and career readiness, athletics, and the arts.
