Set in 18th century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille uses his extraordinary sense of smell to become one of the greatest perfumers of all time. Smells are beautifully described and brought to life for the reader.

‘In the Garden of Beasts; Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin’ by Erik Larson

Erik Larson sheds new and alarming insights on the people, politics, and policies that enabled Hilter’s government to take complete control over Germany and illuminates how and why these events could have happened.

This story unfolds around two key members of an American family sent to Germany in the years before World War II began.

William Dodd was appointed by President Roosevelt as Ambassador to Germany in 1933. Dodd was a soft spoken and often maligned individual who did not fit the ‘pretty good club’ ambassadorial mold of wealthy privileged appointees before him. Still, he stuck to his ethical and moral standards and strived to be a voice of reason and clarity. Dodd sought to raise the alarm flag as daily occurrences of oppression, censorship, and violence were perpetrated on ordinary citizens, even Americans, and especially on the Jewish community by the Third Reich. His messages were often muted, overlooked, and sometimes downright ignored by the State Department and others who did not think Dodd should ever have been appointed as Ambassador.

Martha Dodd, Ambassador Dodd’s daughter, was also in the spotlight during the prewar days in Berlin. Martha was at first enthused by the ‘fresh faces’ of the Hitler Youth and inspired by their vigor and beauty. Martha became socially, if not romantically involved with a number of officers from the Nazi party, including Gestapo chief Rudolf Deils, but as events unfolded she too became disenchanted with the Third Reich and eventually switched her allegiances to the Communist Party(another story entirely!).

Larson skillfully portrays the events of 1933-34 Berlin from the perspective of everyday citizens as well as from those in positions of power. Larson answers the question ‘how could this happen?’ very clearly.

Highly recommended – available as eAudio, eBook, on CD, and in Large Print.

BOOK REVIEW:
‘Cleopatra the Great: the Woman Behind the Legend’ by Joann Fletcher and ‘Cleopatra: a Life’ by Stacy Schiff

Read together, these two books bring a wonderfully three dimensional picture of the life and times of the history’s most infamous queen.

In the first book author Fletcher extrapolates from her extensive research of that period in history to create scenarios of what it must have been like for Cleopatra growing up as one of the privileged and entitled elite. Fletcher’s approach brings the reader a greater understanding of how it actually might have been possible for Cleopatra herself to believe that she was a ‘living god’.

The second book, equally informative, illuminates Cleopatra in a more tradition biographical sense, following her life and family tree, outlining the intrigue and informing the reader of just how dangerous it was for any member of the family to succeed to the throne. Cleopatra was more than Mark Anthony and Caesar’s lover (which she is best known for) much more – she was an outstanding leader of people, a military a strategist, and a true Egyptian- proud and protective of her country and its people.

Both are highly recommended – especially for all you Egyptophiles out there!

Until next time – see you in the stacks!

Be sure to visit the library’s program page for a complete list of programs at all our libraries http://www.kcls.org/programs/library_programs.cfm

Book Review: ‘The Poisoner’s Handbook: murder and the birth of forensic medicine in jazz age New York’ by Deborah Blum

A fascinating history covering the development of modern toxicology practices, crime scene investigation techniques, and the people and politics of New York City in the 1920s and 1930s.

Blum traces the development of forensic medicine through the careers of 2 very important figures in New York medical examiners history, Dr Charles Norris, New York City’s medical examiner and his chief chemist Dr. Andrew Gettler. Both Norris and Gettler are dedicated and passionate about the work of developing sensitive and reliable testing methods to discover the truth about what is really killing people. Especially in cases of deliberate poisoning and public safety Gettler and Norris work tirelessly to educate the public and motivate the government to regulate dangerous substances.

Blum discusses arsenic, cyanide, radium, chloroform, mercury and several other poisonous materials in depth (and sometimes in grizzly detail) describing how these substances work on the body.

Includes an interesting look at the 1920s prohibition laws and how the scarcity of alcohol increased deaths due to the consumption of bootlegged substitutes many of which contained very toxic substances.

Educational and gruesomely entertaining!

BOOK REVIEW

‘The Forty Rules of Love: a novel of Rumi’ by Elif Shafak

A fictionalized account of the friendship between wandering Dervish, Shams of Tabriz, and the famous 13th century Sufi poet Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, better known simply as ‘Rumi’.

Rumi’s friendship with Shams played a huge role in his development as a poet and mystic.

At the same time author Shafak tells the story of present day Ella, whose world is transforming as she begins a relationship with Sufi writer Aziz Zahara.

Both stories are about love, about finding your true self and about mysticism.

The story is filled with Rumi’s quotes and poems that beautifully illuminate the seekers path, timeless.

Wonderfully written, highly recommended!

Until next time – see you in the stacks!

Did You Know that there’s a very helpful ‘Elf’ on the loose in our very own library?

That’s right – the Library Elf makes it easy to keep track of what’s due, overdue or ready for pickup from one or more library accounts. Library Elf is like a personal assistant designed with the busy or avid library user in mind.
BOOK REVIEW
‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ by Rebecca Skloot

Stunning revelations about medical research, privacy, patient rights, ethics and profit – a must read!

Many medical advances and discoveries happened due to the research made possible by the cells of Henrietta Lacks. Henrietta Lacks was a young black woman who died of cervical cancer in the early 1950s; cells from her cancer tumor were harvested and grown by doctors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. The cells came to be known as HeLa cells, from the first two letters of her first and last names.

What is so remarkable about the story is that these cells were among the first that scientists were able keep alive and grow. Much of what is known today about cell and tissue culture is directly based on research done with HeLa cells, even today HeLa cells are widely used for medical research.

The other remarkable thing about this story is that the Lacks family had no idea that Henrietta’s cells were alive and growing and that profits were being made from HeLa cell research. As author Rebecca Skloot delves into Henrietta’s story she uncovers major ethical questions about cell and tissue research and ownership that continue to be debated to this day.

Skloot was able to get to know the Lacks family, especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah’s entire life was dedicated to making sure that her mother’s contribution to the world was recognized and honored.

In the end, this story is much more than a reporting on Henrietta and her cancer, it’s a story about her family, medical research in the 1950s and today, and the medical treatment of black and poor people by the medical community.

This book is a scientific human interest story everyone should read. The scientific community is still not required by law to inform patients when or even if their tissues will be used for research or testing, not to mention any profit that may be created from patients’ ‘raw materials’.

Highly recommended.

Available in regular & Large Print, on CD, as an ebook, and in eaudio formats.

Until next time – see you in the stacks!

BOOK REVIEW:

Books by Tana French: ‘In the Woods’, ‘The Likeness’, and ‘Faithful Place’

If you enjoyed Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ series (or are still waiting for your copy!) you will be happy to discover Irish author Tana French.

French’s 3 novels ‘In the Woods’, ‘The Likeness’, and ‘Faithful Place’, though not a true series, are all centered around the lives and stories of the Dublin Murder Squad.

Well written and complicated French’s novels are as much about the crime being investigated as they are about the Detectives trying to solve them.

In ‘The Likeness’ undercover cop Cassie Maddox bears an uncanny resemblance to a murder victim, this ‘likeness’ enables Detective Maddox to impersonate the victim in hopes of uncovering who wanted her dead. Erie and suspenseful the reader is constantly on edge, expecting at any moment that the murderer will discover the imposter.

In ‘Faithful Place Detective Sergeant Frank Macky (who first appeared in ‘The Likeness’) is involved with a murder case that literally brings his personal skeletons out of the closet.

‘In the Woods’ features Detective Maddox along with her partner Rob Ryan whose childhood experience of abduction and murder comes back to life in a fresh but very familiar case.

Family relationships, past and present come together in all of French’s novels. French’s characters are complex and well developed, the reader enjoys a truly three dimensional portrait of the personal and psychological side of life on the Murder Squad.

Unfortunately, it’s being drowned out by the screams of the kids playing in the nearby spray park.

Book Review:
‘The Meaning of Night: a Confession’ by Michael Cox

More like the meaning of spooky!

This story starts out with a cold-blooded murder then continues on with one diabolical plot twist and turn after another.

Lots of suspense, intrigue, and subterfuge that leave you wondering just who IS the real villain here? The true nature of these evil, yet sometimes likable characters is only hinted at, leaving us, in the end trusting no one.

Well researched and written this book has it all; history, romance and murder.

The setting, Victorian England, is a perfect choice for this psychological thriller. Chilling! Available as a recorded book on CD or cassette tape.

Get out there and read!

Until next we meet, see you in the stacks!
