The 2012 Empty Bowls fundraiser was a huge success, with 1,150 attendees contributing $18,400 – a record!

Of course, major shout-outs go out to all the volunteers, as well as all the local restaurants that donated soup.

Gina Kallman, Cultural Arts Supervisor for the City of Burien, reports that a winner of the “Best Soup” award was announced recently:

We are happy to announce the winners of the “best soups” from the 7th annual Burien Empty Bowls event. Over 100 gallons of wonderful soup were served at the fundraiser for the Highline and White Center Food Banks, and we so appreciate the generosity of our local businesses! Dana and John Lasswell, our amazing volunteer kitchen managers, tasted all the soups and used a ratings system borrowed from a New York food critic. They gave us this report:

The results are in!!! This year’s Empty Bowls best soup winner is Elliott Bay Brewing Company for their Habanera Beef Chili! They received 92 points out of a possible 100! Big chunks of perfectly cooked beef, full flavored spice, and a hint of beer! Superb!

White Center’s new restaurant “Company” deserves an honorable mention for coming in 2nd place with their very first contribution to Empty Bowls. Their potato leek with bacon soup came in strong with a rating of 89.5 points and nearly perfect marks for flavor!

With a strong 3rd place finish was the Tin Room Bar and Grill’s creamy tomato soup with 88 points. Their high marks for “aroma” were appreciated by everyone volunteering in the kitchen!

‘Wrap It Up’ is a gift wrapping service that will serve as a fundraiser for Furry Faces and AARF Foundations, with a local version happening at Elliott Bay Brewery on Friday, Dec. 23rd, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.

“The elves of F3 and the Animal Aid & Rescue Foundation are just waiting to wrap your gifts in splendor and uniqueness!” reads an announcement. “We have gift wrap, bows, tape, ribbon, garland, pinecones, pipe cleaners, name tags, and more! It’s up to you how much you would like to donate for the gift wrapping with 100% of the proceeds going directly to helping animals. How is that possible? Because our generous business partner, Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub, F-cubers and A.A.R.F.’ers have donated everything needed for this event!”

Those in need of wrapping can sit back and enjoy a beverage and nibble while watching the elves dazzle you with their brilliant smiles and unique wrapping styles!

“You will LOVE our Holiday Firecracker Bottle Wrap!” they add.

Elliott Bay Brewery’s annual Oktoberfest celebration will be held this Saturday, Sept. 24th at their Burien location, at 255 SW 152nd Street.

They’ll have a special menu all day, including Brats and Mashed, beer cheese soup, and Schnitzel, along with Live music (no cover!) from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. from Bonnie Birch Bavarian Band.

Of course, it’s family-friendly event and always a good time.

Elliott Bay Brewing Co. is a family-owned company of high quality neighborhood brewpubs in the Seattle area. Owners Todd Carden and Brent Norton met in 1994 while working for the Maritime Pacific Brewing Co. If it’s the last weekend in September, it means it’s the fourth annual Oktoberfest Celebration at Elliott Bay Brewhouse and Pub. Located right across from Burien’s Town Square at 4th SW and SW 152nd, you’ll find tons of traditional German fun, food and beer all day starting at 9:30am and through closing at 12-Midnight.

The Pub will have food specials all day as well as a special Oktoberfest Menu, an outdoor beer garden and live music from 3pm – 10pm inside. The musical line-up includes:

• Mellifluous Zephyrs are back this year by popular demand where they’ll be playing traditional German Polka Music on wind instuments

At today’s Burien Farmers Market, you’ll get a chance to taste some FREE food samples from Elliott Bay Brewery, from Noon – 2pm at the yellow Discover Burien tent, so why not make plans to take a “long lunch” and head on over?

While there, you can also pick up some farm-fresh produce, arts and crafts, honey and a wide assortment of other great stuff.

The Burien Farmers Market runs until 6pm at Town Square Park, located at SW 152nd and 5th Place SW – just look for the tents.

Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence is holding their 2009 Oktoberfest fundraiser Dinner, Dance and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 10th from 6pm to 11pm at the Normandy Park Cove.

If it’s September, it must be time for the third annual Oktoberfest at Burien’s Elliot Bay Brewhouse and Pub (a returning BTB Advertiser) – that’s right, following in the German tradition, Oktoberfest starts in September! Big difference is that the Germans celebrate for 16 days, into early October.

Elliott Bay’s celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26th.

Michael Goldsmith, General Manager of Elliott Bay, sat down with BTB earlier this week to lay out their plans to be a part of Burien’s Oktoberfest. The aim is to provide the city of Burien and surrounding area with a “family friendly area-wide celebration in the broadest sense.”

“We’re really excited about the music,” said Michael. “We’re presenting live music inside and outside from 2-9pm.”

Here’s a line up of the bands:

• Mellifluous Zephyrs will be playing traditional German Polka music on wind instruments
• Jonathan Kimball will play Folk/Blues and Acoustic
• Sunderlyn, “a powerpop altrock band” according to their website

In addition to the music, Elliott Bay has developed a special Oktoberfest Menu. In the true Oktoberfest tradition they’re setting up beer tents outside with “festival-style tables.” This means that you may have to sit with strangers, but the more you get into the spirit of Oktoberfest, the less strange they might be to you.

Elliott Bay is Burien’s only award-winning brewery, making the beers their customers enjoy right on the premises. Such popular local beers as:

• B-Town Brown
• Highline IPA
