With Local Thrifty Burien, businesses in Burien can specifically target potential customers in B-Town. It’s very local, and very focused. For Local Thrifty, Burien will be it’s 5th market to open on the west coast. Walla Walla Washington, and Vacaville California are two of their other markets launched using their hyper-local approach. For businesses it’s just a new way to advertise. “It’s like the next wave in advertising,” says Gonzalez, when asked about the significant discount businesses give to get customers in the door. Posting the ad costs the business nothing. In fact the business never writes Local Thrifty a check, it’s the other way around. Local Thrifty handles all the billing on their website and then takes their share and sends a check to the business. “Online shopping is part of all of our lives,” Gonzalez says. “The difference between shopping Local Thrifty and something like let’s say Amazon, is that we send the money back to the community while still letting the customer have the experience of buying online.

Just in case you aren’t familiar, the Groupon and Local Thrifty Burien model encourages people to buy with their friends and take advantage of the word of mouth effect that social media provides. Each deal that Local Thrifty advertises has a minimum that needs to be purchased before it goes “Nifty”. If the deal doesn’t meet the minimum sales nobody gets the deal and nobody is billed. “It’s risk free advertising,” Says Gonzalez. “What other form of advertising gives you such a detailed look at your ROI? It’s a win for the customers with great deals, and it’s win for businesses when they bring in new customers.” What the businesses do with the customers to keep them coming back, is up to them.

A new Burien-based blog has launched – Two Frugal Chicks – run by our friend Suzanne Greive, who you may recall helped save over $1,800 for the White Center Food Bank in February (read our coverage here) using coupons.

Suzanne is known as an “Extreme Couponer” and now she and Shelly Drotning have put together a website devoted to saving money and donating food to local food banks.

In addition to sharing info online, they’ll also be holding classes from 10am – Noon on April 26th, and from 6pm – 8pm on May 31st at the Burien Community Center – sign up here.

Local Burien residents and “Extreme Couponers” Suzanne Greive and Bernie Blais spent Tuesday morning (Feb. 22) saving a lot of money for the White Center Food Bank.

They combined a QFC “mega sale,” along with numerous manufacturer’s coupons to get some extremely deep discounts.

Their total bill came to $453.67, which amounted to a total savings of $1,833.33 – an 80% discount!

Rick Jump of the White Center Food bank was there with vans to load the food. Scott Hieronymus, Manager of the Westwood Village QFC, worked with them to close down a lane and check out the massive order. It was a lot of fun and they are looking forward to doing it again.

Be on the lookout in the spring flier for the Burien Community Center for free classes on how to get started couponing. They are looking to share this fun and rewarding hobby with individuals, churches and community services to Cut Out Hunger in our area.
