[EDITOR'S NOTE: A lovely lady named Heidi won the “Win a Date With Bart Bryan Contest” last week. Bart Bryan is The B-Town’s Blog’s single Sales Guy and frequent video Host. Heidi and Bart enjoyed dinner and dancing this last Saturday night at the Burien/White Center Rotary Club's annual dinner and auction fundraiser. Here is Bart’s report:]
Story by Bart Bryan
Photos by Mark Neuman
I was pretty nervous as I waited at South Seattle Community College for my date Heidi to arrive for our big night.
I anxiously waited at the valet parking area when she pulled up.
Heidi looked beautiful in a purple dress as I helped her out of her car. We walked into the ballroom and found our table right in front of the stage.
We sat down and instantly hit if off. We then took Fox Trot lessons from a professional dance instructor, the enthusiastic Courteney Lynn. We had a blast as we, well, Fox Trotted across the floor.
We then had a wonderful dinner, prepared by the culinary students at South Seattle Community College, as we chatted with our tablemates as the evening unfolded.
The auction and raffle drawing began at 8 o’clock, and to my surprise my name was announced. After absorbing good natured ribbing, courtesy BTB Advertiser Tami Greene, Heidi was then introduced, whereupon she randomly selected the first winning raffle ticket out of a hat.
“Every year the auction and dinner supports several community programs and scholarships within the Burien and White Center areas,” said Tami, who is also the Public Relations person for the Rotary Club.
After the auction, Heidi and I danced the night away to the classic Rock and R&B stylings of the great local band Uncle Ernie.
And before we knew it, the night came to an end.
As I walked Heidi to her car I asked “Do I get a second date with you at the Mark Restaurant?”
She laughed and said “Well, I guess so!”
We hugged goodnight and after the embrace I looked in her eyes, and…
I’ll leave the rest up to the reader’s imagination…

If you missed their first show (on Sept. 5th), now is your chance to see them perform, this time with Vanessa Page! The Shivering Denizens put on a great honky tonk/blues show, and from the bass to the banjo, have an original sound of their own.

This is a 21+ over show only, so leave the kids at home, but put your dancin’ shoes on, and bring your appetite and thirst (might as well include your pep too, since they’re open until 2am).
Bison Creek is located at:
630 SW 153rd St.

Note from Shauna, Bison Creek owner:
This is one of my personal favorite bands.
The banjo player and stand up bass player is amazing.
The crowd for the last show was diverse. Both the young (mid 20’s) and the old (50+) were enjoying the sounds of The Shivering Denizens.
Very unique!

According to an inside, well-placed source at city hall, a strip club will be taking over the space formerly occupied by Office Depot, located at 15716 First Avenue South in Burien.
The new club, to be called “Red Light Runners” will cater to males over 18 and will be the first all-nude club in south King County to feature the latest trend in adult entertainment – Strippers on Segways.
“In this economy, you take what you can get,” said Real Estate agent Fred Nathanian, who brokered the deal. “But what would you rather have – an empty building with no tax revenue, or a hopping high-tech girly bar with lots of cashflow, especially in the form of neatly-folded ones and fives?”
“Red Light Runners” is owned by Frank “Red” Flexxxamaria, an “entertainment agent” who has built a successful chain of Segway clubs in the Portland area.
“Burien needs some adult fun, doncha tink?” Colamaria said while chewing a cigar and showing off the new club’s recently-installed polystyrene dance track. “Not only will Red Light Runners have a wholesome, high-tech all-nude adult club, we’ll have a first-class all-beef and hardcrust-bread restaurant, free wi-fi, a sexy drive-thru espresso stand, 10-cent color copy happy hours on a Brother CDW-4070 wireless laser printer weekdays from 4-7pm, strippers and servers on Segways, and a fun, dark and cozy Daycare Center for the kids. Now you find me another place like dat around here…”
We tried repeatedly to get comments from the mayor and numerous city councilmembers, but they were all apparently out of town on a group junket in Portland, doing “research.”
The club is expected to have its grand opening on July 4th, right after its staff leads Burien’s annual 4th of July Parade on red, white and blue Segways.

They always amaze me!

Tonight is the night to pop, lock and break (or whatever the kids call it these days) to some serious B-Town beats at a Breakdancing Competition called the “Battle of Burien.”
The fun starts at 7pm and goes until around 11pm in the Burien Community Center auditorium, located at 425 SW 144th Street.
Cost is $5, and all dancers are welcome to watch or compete in a variety of battles to win prizes.
Luke will be the DJ and Amanda’s teen council will be helping out.
Our neighborhood’s diverse culture is on display in these two videos which show Mexican children doing a celebratory New Year’s dance in the parking lot of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church on 152nd.
Notice how the music sounds kind of Polka-esque – we could be wrong, but we believe this to be “Banda Music,” which gets its origins from German-Americans who lived in south Texas in the 1930s. According to Wikipedia, the German descendants introduced polka music to Mexicans, who then ran with it and made it their own (talk about a weird combo, but somehow it works and sounds very cool!).
Roughly translated, the Youtube blurb reads:
“While we the adults declare our culture with respect and happiness, our little ones continue our legacy…”
