Make a note to attend ‘Sing & Sketch,’ a public event for Art, music and coffee lovers. First opened in spring of 2009, Burien Press is a family-owned venture that “hopes to bring fine coffee, fine print –in the form of a diverse periodical selection, great local art and many conversations to Burien’s thriving community.”

Burien Press proudly features farm direct Caffe Vita coffee, handcrafted sandwiches from Domovoi Happy Foods, organic pasties from Macrina Bakery and delicious High 5 Pies.

“Whether you’re leaving the Burien area to head to Seattle or you are making the trek down the freeway, Burien Press is an easy stop because we are located just off 1st Ave, 509 and 518,” reads a statement on their website. “There is plenty of parking for cars and those wonderful inventions called bicycles.”

“We want Burien to be a place where art is prevalent and enjoyed. That’s why when we planned to set up shop, we designed a setting that would allow for art to be displayed and enjoyed while not inhibiting our guest’s space. We think that the simplicity of our modern shop allows the art to stand out on its own and we hope you will to. We like to bring in new artists often so check back soon for a preview!”

Just over a year after first opening, Infusion Tea & Coffee, located at 15607 1st Ave South in Burien, has brewed its last cup and closed, and a new business called “Balloons And Cupcakes” will be opening in its place.

According to a sign on the front door, the new store will open “hopefully the first weekend in May.” Unless they’ve got a time machine as well as balloons and cupcakes, that has yet to happen.

From what we can tell, this business also has a location at 22307 Marine View Drive South in Des Moines.

On Monday afternoon (May 23rd), it appeared that all of Infusion’s espresso equipment had been removed from inside the cafe, leaving behind only the fixtures and furniture:

Infusion opened in May, 2010, and according to a story we posted at the time:

In the chilly summer evenings customers will be able to cozy up next to their 360-degree fireplace in large cushy chairs. The walls will be adorned with work by local artists and starting in June, they’ll feature local musicians with a slower to moderate tempo to help create a relaxing and entertaining atmosphere.”

At the time of their opening, they served Stumptown coffee, along with pastries from Alki Bakery.

Before learning of their closing, we heard that they had changed their name to the Juxtapose Cafe, but according to that Facebook Page, they’re closed as well:

Since we were unable to reach the current proprietors, we can only guess that the rough economy, and perhaps a less-than-desirable location that lacked a serious infusion of customers may be the reason for the closure.

BTB Advertiser Burien Press will be hosting “Process Paintings,” a new art exhibit featuring oil paintings by local artist Garreth Schuh, which will open with a reception this Saturday, Jan. 8th at 6pm.

Everyone is invited to join Mr. Schuh and members of the community as they raise their coffee cups and toast a new year full of exciting arts events in Burien.

According to the good folks at Burien Press:

Garreth Schuh grew up in a rural area south of Seattle where he spent a lot of time with his grandparents who farmed, made things by hand and lived a rich, but frugal life. Mr. Schuh’s grandmother introduced him to oil painting and the “matter-of-fact” portrayal of her subjects stayed with him as he matured. Garreth Schuh studied art and architecture through college and he obtained a Master’s Degree in the mid-1980s in Philadelphia. He built a career around a parallel focus on creating art and architecture and though he left that rural life behind, he has always felt the pull of the lessons of his childhood and a connection to his grandparents’ generation.

In the early 1990s Garreth Schuh became disabled which dramatically changed every aspect of his life. He has been fortunate to be able to rebuild my life around the limitations of a wheelchair, and now finds that the inspiration for making art, and living life in general, is an effort to stay connected to his grandparents and their generation’s resourceful way of life. Many of the paintings in the Process Paintings exhibit recall his childhood experiences with them, the things they taught, and landscapes, people or creatures from those years. Mr. Schuh’s disability profoundly limits his options to engage the world physically, but painting his memories of that robust rural life keeps him tangibly connected to his grandparents and gives my life balance.

In addition to hosting gallery-style art shows, the Burien Press also hosts a monthly Sing & Sketch event on the second Thursday of every month and supports the growing arts community in Burien.

An open-mic fundraiser for the family of the late Esteban Garcia will be held at BTB Advertiser Infusion Tea & Coffee from 6pm – 10pm on Friday, June 25th, in an effort to raise money to help cover his funeral costs.

According to an email from BTB Reader Kevin Hayes:

A couple of friends and I have set up an open-mic night at Infusion Tea & Coffee on Friday, June 25th in order to raise some money for the family of Esteban Garcia.

We are hoping that you could help us spread the word because his family is really hurting right now while trying to cover all his funeral costs.

As far as Esteban’s story, he and I went to Highline High School together back in the day. In November, right before his 21st birthday, he was diagnosed with an incredibly rare form of sarcoma that is considered one of the most aggressive cancers known to doctors. The doctors found a tumor in his leg and began chemotherapy regimens to combat the disease. When the chemo didn’t work, they ended up being forced to amputate his leg about a month ago. Shortly after he began recovery, he had to go to the ICU and the doctors found more cancer cells in his lungs and liver. He passed away three days later. His family had been struggling as it was to cover his hospital expenses and then when he passed away they were left with a huge burden on top of their incredible loss.

Esteban was by far the kindest person I’ve ever met and all of us who knew him have felt blessed to call him an inspiration. Throughout his whole battle with cancer, he never showed any weakness and was smiling right up until the end.

Coffee or Tea? Now you don’t have to choose.

Infusion Tea & Coffee just opened on the corner of 156th and First Ave South in Burien. They will soon be announcing their grand opening event and are welcoming customers to stop by and see their progress in its final stages.

Within the brightly-colored walls you can get some work done using their free Wi-Fi, play backgammon, checkers or chess on any of the number of boards they have throughout the shop. In the chilly summer evenings customers will be able to cozy up next to their 360-degree fireplace in large cushy chairs. The walls will be adorned with work by local artists and starting in June, they’ll feature local musicians with a slower to moderate tempo to help create a relaxing and entertaining atmosphere.

Let’s not forget the beverages! Infusion tea I learned is specially-blended flavors that are prepared in a very specific manner to create a more full flavor than an average bagged tea.

There’s nothing like curling up with a newspaper and a cup o’ joe at your neighborhood (and we do mean neighborhood) coffee shop.

That combination has sprung forth on SW 152nd, across from the new library and city hall, in the form of Burien Press, our latest advertiser.

We welcome them aboard the B-Town Blog, and we love the double-entendre of their name, expressed in their slogan: Fine coffee, fine print.

Hence the newspapers and magazines from around the country easily found at the newly-built shop, which also features free wi-fi and lots of electrical outlets, perfect for those who prefer to read things like local blogs.

Co-owners are husband and wife Mark Kearns and Erin Williamson.

“We spent two years looking around Burien for just the right spot,” said Erin, a fourth-generation Burien resident.

Mark did the bulk of the build-out. He’s a carpenter with years of experience with Pacific Studio, where he worked on projects for the Seattle Art Museum, Experience Music Project, and Yellowstone National Park.

The Burien Press interior is warm and smartly designed, featuring fir and other material reclaimed from the site’s demolition. A deck out back provides sunlight and seclusion.

(How non-corporate. Hmmm. We wonder if an international coffee house conglomerate, headquartered in Seattle, might take a clue here. Naaah! They’d never go ‘neighborhood,’ now would they? Just a thought.)

Many of our readers already know Erin. She serves as Executive Director of Burien Arts, which runs the Burien Art Gallery.

Burien Press is not Mark and Erin’s only recent creation. Their son Alder was born just a few weeks ago. His older sister Isla, almost three, couldn’t be more proud.

Alder and Isla. Unique names they are.

“Their names come from my European roots,” said Erin. “Some of my more nearby relatives think we named our kids Beatrice and Ernest!”

Stop by and say Hi (you’ll probably see us, or numerous Burien city employees who frequent the joint). Juices, fresh salads and sandwiches are also available.
