The Onsite Swedish Mobile Mammogram Coach will be making a stop at the Burien Community Center on Wed., Aug. 10th, offering their mammography services to all variety of Burien breasts.

If you want this to be FREE breast exam, you are required to make an appointment first by calling Brittany at 206-727-6261, and they say you should call immediately.

“As a special incentive, all women who come into the center and get their annual mammogram performed on the coach will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card to Safeway grocery store,” reads a press release. “If you bring a friend to get a mammogram, your chances are doubled.”

Here are more details:

• All women 40+ can use the service.
• Swedish accepts most forms of insurance including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. The only insurance they cannot accept is GAU.
• If you feel you are in need of mammography services and are not yet 40 years old, please call for further consultation or check with your doctor.
• If you are not a senior and don’t have insurance you can still get a mammogram. The BCCHP (Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program) program will provide a free annual mammogram for women age 40-64.

Carol Roll on Mt. Rainier.

Carol Roll and Jameson Dowell of Burien are taking on an ambitious goal in support of research to improve prevention and early detection of breast cancer – this August they will be scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft) in Tanzania, Africa for the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer benefiting Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the world’s largest free standing mountain and one of the Seven Summits. The Mt. Kilimanjaro climb will be Roll’s third time participating in Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. In 2007, she raised $8,000 and climbed to the top of Mt. Rainier – 14,411 ft. Last year she attempted Mt. Shasta in Northern California and raised $9,000 for The Hutch. Unfortunately she was not able to make the summit due to weather conditions but that hasn’t stopped Roll from continuing to climb on behalf of The Hutch. Roll grew up in the area and always enjoyed spending time outdoors hiking, camping and fishing. She first got inspired to climb after spending a couple weeks backpacking around the base of Mt. Rainier on the Wonderland Trail.

It is not just about reaching the top of a mountain though that inspires Roll to climb. After her second battle with breast cancer, Roll lost her aunt, Dr. Carol Folger, to breast cancer in 2001. She climbs in memory of her aunt in hopes that the funding she generates will one day lead to life saving research.

Dowell has already climbed many of the highest peaks in the Pacific Northwest including Rainier, Adams, Hood and Baker but this will be Dowell’s first time participating in Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. He is looking forward to giving back to the community while participating in an activity that he loves.

As part of their commitment to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Roll and Dowell will together raise $20,000 for breast cancer research for their Mt. Kilimanjaro climb. More information and how to support their efforts can be founds here:

Climb to Fight Breast Cancer expeditions offer opportunities for participants of all skill levels to have fun and be challenged in honor of those who have battled breast cancer. Peaks to be offered this year include:

• Mount Adams in Washington (12,276 feet)
• Mount Baker in Washington (10,781 feet)
• Denali in Alaska (20,320 feet)
• Mount Elbrus in Russia (18,510 feet)
• Mount Hood in Oregon (11,237 feet)
• Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (19,340 feet)
• Mount Olympus in Washington (7,980 feet)
• Mount Rainier in Washington (14,411 feet)
• Mount Shasta in California (14,179 feet)
• Volcanoes of Mexico (Pico de Orizaba,18,850 feet; and Ixtaccíhuatl, 17,343 feet)

The “Volcanoes” climb will take place in October; the rest of the expeditions are scheduled for the spring and summer months.

Professional guides from Alpine Ascents International will lead expeditions to Denali, the Mexican volcanoes, Mount Elbrus, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Olympus, Mount Rainier and Mount Baker. Shasta Mountain Guides leads the trek up Mount Shasta, and guides from Portland Parks & Recreation will lead teams up Mount Adams and Mount Hood. Each climb will have a limited number of team members – generally nine or 10 – as established by the guide services. Each participant commits to a fundraising minimum of $3,000 to $12,500, depending on the mountain.

Since the first Climb to Fight Breast Cancer 14 years ago on Mount Adams, the popular fundraiser has garnered more than $5 million in support of breast cancer research at the Hutchinson Center.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Scientists at the Hutchinson Center study many aspects of the disease, including preventive measures, risk factors and early detection. Details can be found here.

A “Mobile Mammogram Coach” will be parked at the new Burien Community Center from 8am – 4pm on Tuesday, Aug. 10th, offering mammograms right there onsite.

Provided by Swedish Medical Center, this service is for all women ages 50 and up, both with and without insurance.

According to a flier, there will also be “Free Mammograms for those who qualify,” as well as free Goodie Bags.

A local cancer-fighting group called the Pink Pedi Cures are holding a “Rock n’Bowl for the Cure” fundraiser bowling party (aka “Bowling For Boobies”) at Burien’s Hi-Line Lanes on Saturday, June 12th from 3pm – 6pm.

The Pink Pedi Cures consist of five ladies who will walk 60 miles over the course of three days to fight breast cancer in the Susan G. Komen “3-Day for the Cure” fundraiser. Their target goal is $11,500, and they’re looking for help.

BTB Advertiser Vision Collision is sponsoring a car wash this Saturday and Sunday to help raise funds for Robin Hoof, a local teacher who is fighting breast cancer.

The event takes place on both this Saturday (Oct. 10th) and Sunday (Oct. 11th) from 11am to 5pm at Vision Collision, located at 803 SW 154th Street in Burien.

Robin Hoof has been a teacher and swim coach with the Highline School District for 20 years. At Evergreen High School she is a French teacher, and also serves as swim coach for the boys and girls teams at Highline High School.

In April 2007, Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer. After undergoing chemo and a mastectomy, she was considered in remission. In early 2009 she noticed a lump in her neck and was diagnosed for the second time in February. She again underwent chemo and then in the Spring she took her students to Europe. When she got back from that trip, she noticed she had a rather bad cough. Then in August she was admitted to Swedish Hospital where she continued chemo treatments, but her health was rapidly declining. Due to her compromised immune system, the doctors gave her the last chemo treatment on September 18th and told she and her mother, “any day now.”

That day has come and gone, and Robin is still fighting, but she needs your help (and you need a car wash, so this is a perfect match!).

Alternative forms of treatment are now being explored by her family, as those closest to her refuse to give up. Robin’s words to her mother at Swedish were, “I’m not going to let this get me Mom.” She’s in the fight of her life, and wants to beat this disease.

Burien’s Highline Medical Center is aiming to provide 1,000 mammograms to women in our community during October, which is “Beast Cancer Awareness Month,” and is offering free “booby prizes” (NOTE: this is our nickname, not theirs) as incentive.

As part of their “October 1,000” campaign, the first 1,000 women who receive mammograms at Highline Diagnostics at SW 160th during October will receive an eco bag filled with items to pamper herself. In addition, 75 random bags will contain Dr. Oz’s book “YOU: Staying Young. The Owner’s Manual to Extending Your Warranty.”

They will also be treating mammogram patients to complimentary mini-spa and mini-massage sessions. As an extra incentive, every woman will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win fun prizes including spa packages, gym memberships, salon visits and personal training sessions.
