As you are sampling your way through the beer tent at the Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest on Saturday, Sept. 10th, make it a point to stop by the Elliot Bay Brewing Co. to taste their handcrafted organic beers and to thank them for the great work that they do in the community.

Todd Carmen, Doug Hindman and Brent Norton

Elliott Bay Brewing Co. is a family-owned company of high quality neighborhood brewpubs in the Seattle area. Owners Todd Carden and Brent Norton met in 1994 while working for the Maritime Pacific Brewing Co. They forged a friendship and explored their common goal and dream of owning and operating their own brewpub. They also met Head Brewer Doug Hindman at Maritime Pacific.

Todd and Brent incorporated the Elliot Bay Brewery in November of 1996. In March 1997, they began construction of a brewpub in the historic “Junction” of West Seattle. Elliott Bay Brewhouse and Pub, the company’s second brewpub, opened in Burien in March of 2007. The company is the first brewery in Washington to gain organic certification form W.S.D.A. for the vast majority of their beer styles.

Over the past thirteen years, Elliott Bay Brewery & Pub has been a leader in philanthropic support and instrumental in creating an amazing sense of community in the neighborhoods which it serves. The company supports a progressive company culture and socially responsible business practices and serves on various advisory boards and volunteered time and expertise to many charitable events. Some of the many valuable non-profit groups and worthy causes that Elliot Bay Brewery supports include:

Burien Fire Victim Fund

Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Auction & 3-day Walk

Children’s Hospital

West Seattle Food Bank

West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival

YMCA

In an interview with the Burien Elliot Bay Brewhouse & Pub General Manager, Michael Goldsmith, when asked about the company’s belief in making a difference, stated:

“Giving back and being involved with our community has always been a big part of our culture. We do little advertising and pour that money and effort instead into charitable donations focusing primarily on local schools and kids. We depend on a kind ‘of word of mouth’ advertising and hope people know and respect us for our efforts. And more directly to your question…why give back to the community? Because from the owners, to brewers, to servers…we all live here and want to be proud of our community.”

The Rotary Club of Des Moines is pleased to partner with an organization like Elliot Bay Brewery who believes as strongly as they do about giving back to the community and truly implements the Rotary Motto “Service Above Self.”

100% of the net proceeds of this all-day event will support Rotary’s Music4Life program, which expands music to youth in our local schools.

The official musical lineup for the Des Moines Rotary’s Blues & Brews Festival has been released, and not only do we have it here, but we’ve also got a video of one of the bands to give you a sneak preview taste of what to expect.

Staff from our sister site The Waterland Blog (ahem, that’s also us…) will be there as well, doing “live blogging” demonstrations and hanging out, so be sure to look for us!

As a reminder, the first annual Blues & Brews Festival will be held from Noon – 7pm on Saturday, Sept. 25th at Des Moines Beach Park. 100% of the net proceeds will support Rotary’s Music4Life program, which is aimed at expanding music to youth in local schools.

Enjoy a day filled with local blues from five different bands, along with a variety of fine brews from 10-15 local breweries (we’ll be doing stories on local brewers soon).

To complement your blues and brews, they’ll be barbecuing Bratwurst and B&E Market’s famous Tri-Tip for your dining enjoyment.

This is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine, you must be 21 or older to attend and no pets will be allowed inside the event. No outside food or beverages allowed. Low lawn chairs and picnic blankets allowed. There will be plenty of free parking in the Des Moines Marina. While you are in town, you might want to visit the Des Moines Farmer’s Market and enjoy the Poverty Bay Arts Festival. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the gate. Cash only at the event; credit cards will not be accepted.

Tickets for the Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Fest can be purchased online, at CorkyCellars (206) 824-9462, 99 Bottles (253) 838-2558 or Des Moines Drug (206) 878-2345, and through Rotary Club of Des Moines.

All proceeds will go to service project Music4Life of the Rotary Club of Des Moines.

Here’s the musical line-up:

Noon – 12:45pm: Cold Shot Band

1:15 – 2:15pm: Stacy Jones Band

2:45 – 3:30pm: Rod Cook

4:00 – 5:00pm: Becki Sue and her Big Rockin’ Daddies

5:30 – 7:00pm: Dudley Taft

Here’s a video of Dudley Taft in action, a Seattle-based blues band described by the Washington Blues Society as:

Big, fat and loud are descriptives that got slapped around on the début album of Seattle’s rock and blues singer/songwriter Dudley Taft; pretty, soft and conservatively wired listeners need not apply.

There is no question that Taft, his band and this album have passed through the deep mojo fires of the Seattle music culture infecting a blend of blues standards like Willy Dixon’s “Back Door Man” and “Seventh Son” and Taft’s original work like the album’s title track, “Left For Dead” which encapsulates the spirit of the NW blues with lyrics like “My body hit the mattress, but my soul hit the floor”. The first tune out the gate is Taft’s “Ain’t No Game” which had me heading for my leather pants, boots and ready for a ride and by the last tune, also a Taft original, “If You’ll Come Home” I had to wonder if I wasn’t listening to the next Billy Gibbons or Joe Bonamassa.

If you are new to the name Dudley Taft, he is no upstart to say the least, he’s been rocking crowds for years with regional superstars Spike and the Impalers and it’s going to take a tornado to knock this showman off his game. So if it’s a feast of thick and beefy guitar tones or a stratospheric riff rock, blue note rocket ride this collection of NW styled blues tunes is a must have for any serious rock blues music collection.

Well then, this Saturday night, get your blue butt on up to the 909 Wine & Coffee Bar for the Paul Green Blues Band.

Music starts ’round 8:30pm, and here’s some info from Paul’s website:

Paul Green’s professional career began in New Jersey in 1968 with The Blackberry Booze Band. He also performed with other Jersey musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Clarence Clemons, and Little Steven Van Zandt. Moving to Oakland, California, in 1975, Paul became a member of the house band at a popular blues spot, Eli’s Mile High Club, performing there weekly and recording two albums with JJ Malone and Troyce Key. From 1975 to 1989 he performed throughout the Bay Area with his own band and other musicians, including Sonny Rhodes, Little Frankie Lee, JJ “Bad Boy” Jones, Cool Papa, Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, John Little John, and many others.

In 1989 Paul relocated to Chicago where he continued to “cool himself” in the blues. He performed in such legendary Chicago blues clubs as Buddy Guy’s, Rosa’s, Kingston Mines, and Blues Etc., and shared the stage with such notables as Sugar Blue and Junior Wells. Paul came to the Seattle area in 1991 and promptly won the Washington Blues Society‘s award for “Best Blues Harmonica” in 1992. More recently, he won this award again in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007, and was also voted “Best Male Vocalist” in 2004 and 2006.

Paul has recorded extensively with Dan Dean Productions for commercial and studio productions and has been performing locally in numerous venues. Paul leads his own hard-hitting Chicago-style electric blues quartet, Straight Shot, and is one-half of the award-winning acoustic blues duo Cooke ‘n’ Green. For more information about Paul, check out this interview from the July 2003 Bluesletter.
