Bellingham-based original hard rock trio Birch Riley will be playing a free show at Bison Creek Pizza this Saturday, July 10th starting at 9pm.

The trio includes Wes Hlebichuk on guitar and lead vocals, Shawn Thompson on bass, keys and backing vocals, and “Tools” on drums.

The band, which sounds much like Pearl Jam meets Rush meets Judas Priest, has toured the U.S. in the past and have recently recorded a three song EP called “3″ and released it through CDBABY.com.

The American Night, The Doors Tribute band, is returning to Bison Creek Pizza & Pub this Saturday night (May 8th) for a FREE show beginning at 10pm.

In a little building on Ambaum Blvd. that once housed the old-school Jerry’s Barbershop, instead of the sounds of scissors clipping away, you’ll soon hear the thump thump thump of musicians jamming.

That’s because a new business called the Burien School of Music & Art will be opening its doors soon in the little building on Ambaum Blvd at SW 153rd, near Taco Time.

To celebrate their grand opening, the musicians behind this new venture will be holding a concert at BTB Advertiser Bison Creek Pizza & Pub on Saturday, April 24th, beginning at 8pm. The show will feature Peter DiStefano & The BlackVinyl All-Stars, HarryBu McCage, Three Tree Point Blues Band and The Zack Static Sect.

Limited pre-sale tickets are available online for $10 + a $1 service fee per ticket here.

Located in a former barbershop, this building will house the new Burien School of Music & Arts.

This new biz, helmed by local musician Ryan Burns, will offer (according to their website):

…music lessons for all ages and experience levels, taught by owner/musician/instructor Ryan Burns. Specializing in Jazz, Blues, Rock and Pop, Burns teaches piano, guitar and bass lessons. A Highline High School graduate, Burns later studied at Berklee School of Music in Boston, and has since taught at University of Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle Drum School, and Cornish College of the Arts. Also a performer for over 20 years, Burns decided he would like to share his knowledge and experience with the community that supported him growing up.

Burien School of Music and Art offers Art Classes for all ages and experience levels, led by resident artist Tina Routt. A founding member of White Center for the Arts, Routt’s work has been featured at Bumbershoot Arts Festival, Fremont Solstice Festival, Ok Hotel “Forgotten Works” exhibit, and in association with “I Heart Rummage” at Crocodile Café & Chop Suey. Tina Routt has an eclectic body of work, including lamp work beads, jewelry, dog and cat collars, paintings, cd art, music posters, graphic design, photography, and even art for cookies.

The areas of musical study will include:

• Music History

We stopped by the other day to say Hi to B-Town Blog friend and Advertiser Bison Creek Pizza & Pub. We enjoy the company of the proprietors, but honestly, we just can’t resist the food!

Bison Creek Pizza & Pub originated in West Seattle in 1975 and expanded to Burien in 1977. The West Seattle location is no longer in operation, but the Burien restaurant and pub continues to this day.

New owners Shauna and Ryan Rumel purchased Bison Creek Pizza on September 15, 2008, and have seen business increase due to their hard work even as the economy has seen a dramatic downturn.

Shauna met her husband Ryan at the Art Institute of Seattle where she studied video and film production and Ryan studied graphic design.

They started dating at school and they both graduated in 2001. Then Cupid shot his arrow and they were married in 2004.

Shauna was working in the financial field and Ryan worked in construction. When they both could see that the housing market was going to collapse, they decided to start their own business.

The couple often came to Bison Creek Pizza while they were dating and would drive up from Renton even after they were married because, as Shauna says, “It’s pizza that you crave!”

They noticed a listing for Bison Creek Pizza in 2008 and purchased it.

“It was meant to be,” they told us.

Shauna says “One of the things that sets us apart from other restaurants is that we offer wheat- and gluten-free pizzas, and even wheat- and gluten-free beer!”

“If you have allergies to wheat and gluten, just ask and we will make a special pizza just for you,” she says.

Between 11am and 2pm Monday through Friday, Bison Creek offers a wonderful all-you-can-eat buffet with a salad bar, soup and fantastic pizza!

In addition to pizza, the menu includes appetizers, calzones, a variety of salads, pasta dishes, hot sandwiches and a “Lil’ Bandits” Kids Menu.

Who the heck serves Root Beer Floats anymore? Well, Bison Creek does! Just ask.

On weekends Bison Creek Pizza offers live music featuring some of Seattle’s top bands.

Asked what advice Shauna and Ryan have for folks thinking of starting up their own business, they say “Have patience and go for it. We’re here and we’re happy!”

While eating or enjoying the atmosphere at Bison Creek, ask them about the 100-year old wooden back bar. It’s an 1890′s Brunswick model and was shipped in two pieces from the Bison Creek Dude Ranch in Montana to the Burien location in the early 1990′s.
