B-Town’s annual ‘Empty Bowls’ fundraiser event for the Highline Area and White Center Food Banks will be held Friday, Jan. 27th at the Burien Community Center, with lunch being served from 10 a.m. – Noon, and dinner from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.

This great event will be held at the Burien Community Center,  located 14700 6th Ave SW.

Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, dessert and drink; all donated by local businesses. Sponsored by Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and Discover Burien.

Suggested donations are:

• $15 (minimum) Adult Donation
• $10 (minimum) Child Donation

Empty Bowls events can be found around the country raising money to combat hunger in our communities. Moshier Art Center Potters have donated bowls to be filled with soup at this fun event…and all are invited!

BTB Advertiser The Barrel Tavern will be holding ‘Another Chicken Friday Christmas’ this Friday night (Dec. 16) from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

This will serve as a benefit for the White Center Food Bank.

The community is invited to attend a fundraiser Italian Dinner and Silent Auction to benefit the “Justice For Jayme” Memorial Fund on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

Nineteen year-old Jayme Thomas was shot and killed early Saturday morning, Nov. 5th in Redondo following an argument that escalated among two unidentified men (read our previous coverage of this tragic crime here).

Resurrection Lutheran Church is located at 134 S. 206th Street in Des Moines.

UPDATE 11/28/11: Tickets are available from the church office (M-F 9am-5pm) or at the door, and are $10 Adults, and FREE for ages 5 and under.

There will also be a silent auction with many great items up for bid.

The money raised from the sale of the tickets and silent auction will increase the reward amount, which is currently at $1,000, to make it more attractive for someone to step forward with information. This would be paid to anyone providing information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible for her death – read more about that, along with photos of a ‘person of interest,’ here.

If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation to the Fund, you may do so at any branch of Chase Bank.

The Burien/White Center Rotary Club will be presenting a concert by the Boeing Employees Choir starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 at the Highline Performing Arts Center.

This concert will include a special appearance by the Sylvester Middle School Band, which begins at 7:25 p.m.

This event will serve as a fundraiser for Highline Music4Life, which helps local schools obtain musical instruments.

“Attendees are encouraged to donate musical instruments and/or donate funds to this new program to give an opportunity for many additional students to participate in musical instruction in Highline Schools,” reads a flier.

It will be an ’80s Invasion’ at a benefit show for Burien non-profit New Futures at The Triple Door on Wednesday, Dec. 7th starting at 7:30 p.m.

This is an All Ages event that will feature the band ’80s Invasion.’ While we haven’t seen them live yet, judging from their videos below this looks like a great band (of course we’re huge fans of 80s music…).

“What a great excuse to get yourself down to The Triple Door this holiday season – a benefit show for New Futures!” reads a press release. “Enjoy the classic ambiance of the downtown Seattle venue and rediscover the best 80s tunes with cover band, 80s Invasion!”

A Trivia Night to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, along with Burien resident Angie, who is currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia, will be held Sunday, Nov. 13th at the Burien Community Center.

The fun starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20, or $120 for a team table for eight (saves $5 per ticket).

The Burien Community Center is located at 14700 6th Ave SW.

“Join us for a St. Louis-style Trivia Night to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Angie; our wife, mother, colleague and friend who is currently undergoing treatment for Chronic Lymphocitic Leukemia,” reads a website.

“Put together your trivia team (up to 8 people per team), and get ready for an evening cranium-crunching and cancer-fightin’ fun. The fourth annual Andy MacDonald Scholarship Benefit Boys vs. Girls Soccer Game will be held Sunday, Nov. 27th at Noon at Highline Memorial Stadium.

All proceeds will go to the Andy MacDonald Fire Services Scholarship for the Puget Sound Skills Center Firefighting Program.

Admission is by donation, accepted at the stadium and after the game, where the gathering will continue at The Cove in Normandy Park.

Here’s more info on Andy and this cause:

Andy was a friend, son, brother, and volunteer firefighter who at age 19 tragically lost his life in the November 6, 2006 flooding of the Cowlitz River. Andy was on a hunting trip with his family when the river bank at their campsite was washed away. Andy was in his truck at the time which was parked on the bank and he died before he could be rescued.

Out of tragedy something good can be born. In 2008, Andy’s family and close friends set up a scholarship in his name – the Andy MacDonald Fire Services Scholarship. Each November, in honor of Andy’s birthday and untimely passing, we hold a soccer game known affectionately as the ‘Boys vs. Girls’ game.  Fellow teammates and friends of Andy come out to play a charity game. Afterwards the teams hold a dinner auction/raffle which consists of items donated from local businesses and personal items that Andy’s family and friends contribute.  Last year over 200 people attended and we raised over $7,500.

The scholarship is set up at the Puget Sound Skills Center (PSSC) that Andy attended to begin his firefighting training.  The scholarship assists cadets in the PSSC Fire Services program by offering scholarships to colleges or trade schools the cadets wish to attend to continue their Fire service education.

(An interesting back-story is the commitment and effort Andy’s high school friends continue to put into this event.  They are now in their mid-20’s, entering into adult life.  As a middle aged ‘mom’ working on this benefit, it has been much fun to take direction from them.  I’m proud to know this next generation of Burien.)

Sunday, Oct. 9 will be a great day of German-style fun and exercise presented by the Tin Room Bar & Grill in Olde Burien!

The 5K race starts at 1:00 p.m. in the heart of Olde Burien and widely circles Lake Burien. The “Seize the Sausage” Family Race (about one mile) starts at Lake Burien Park at 1:40 p.m. Both events finish to cheering crowds right in the heart of Olde Burien where revelers can enjoy a day-long Oktoberfest style festival including brats, beer gardens, live entertainment and plenty of activities for kids! Costumes are encouraged!

And don’t forget – the Brat Trot Pub Crawl will be held this Friday night, Oct. 7th:
