Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 24), the Washington State Liquor Control Board closed and suspended the liquor license of Wah Long’s Sports Bar, for “furnishing liquor to a minor.”

Wah Long’s, located at 15220 Ambaum Blvd. SW in Burien, is now closed, and will remain so until Wednesday, Aug. 31st, according to posted signs.

This bar has seen its share of troubles lately, the most recent being May 24th when one man was shot and another stabbed outside after a 21st birthday celebration went awry (read that story here), and another on Jan. 29th when a man was shot inside after allegedly flirting with another man’s girlfriend (coverage here).

And on June 20, a petition was filed with the Burien City Council (see p. 19 of the meeting’s PDF packet here), and signed by 38 area business owners and residents, which said in part:

“We call on the city of Burien to ask the Washington State Liquor Control Board for a non-renewal of the Wah Long sports bar’s liquor license … we further ask the city to remove the Wah Long sports bar’s business license.”

We asked the city for a reply, and Public Information Office Steve Botkin said:

“While we don’t want to get into the habit of responding to rumors, what I can tell you is the Wah Long  Sports Bar’s license comes up for renewal in October and the City will be involved in the renewal process as it is with other business license renewal applications.”

Wah Long’s liquor license is up for renewal on Oct. 31st.

We have tried unsuccessfully to contact Jimmy, Wah Long’s owner, and we hope to post a followup story soon with information from him.

Nick Rondos, Owner of the new Kayak Bar and Grill (located in the Normandy Park Towne Center), wants our Readers to know that they’re now offering a full breakfast menu on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

You can also rent out their private ‘Kayak Room,’ for intimate, business or any other occasions. This room accommodates 2 to 14 people, with a warm and cozy living room feel. “Watch your team’s replays or live sporting events in a private setting or light the candles and close the doors for your own getaway – enjoy it all with full restaurant service!” You can also rent the entire restaurant for special occasions.

The King County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a man celebrating his 21st birthday was critically stabbed, and another man shot Tuesday night (May 24th) during a bar fight outside the Wah Long Sports Bar in Burien.

Both victims ended up at Harborview Medical Center.

The shooter is still at large.

The incident began about 12:20 a.m. at the Wah Long, located at 15220 Ambaum Blvd SW. Several patrons got into an argument inside the business, which escalated into a fistfight involving four people outside in the parking lot. At some point during the fight one participant was stabbed several times with a knife.

Next one of the persons involved in the fight ran over to a parked car, pulled out a handgun, and fired several shots. One of the people in the original fight was hit and he collapsed. The shooter, stabbing victim, and others piled into the car and the vehicle sped off.

Sheriff’s deputies and Burien Police arrived about 45 seconds after the 9-1-1 call, and Medics a short time later. Meanwhile, the getaway car dropped off the stabbing victim and his sister at Highline Medical Center and then left immediately. The victim was transferred to Harborview.

The injuries suffered by the shooting victim, a 33-year old Burien resident, are not believed to be life-threatening. However the injuries to the 21-year old stabbing victim are. He is from Burien also.

There have been no arrests.

The only problem is, it isn’t – Elmer’s is open for business as usual.

Elmer’s bartender, a feisty redhead named Flo, was shocked when she received two phone calls asking if they were permanently closed as the website said they were.  Her response was

“Both times I was serving customers. We are open for business and I would like to know who started the rumor…” she said.

This incident first came to our attention after BTB Reader Joseph posted an eyewitness account in our Forums – early Saturday morning (Jan. 29th) there was a shooting at Burien’s Wah Long Sports Bar (15220 Ambaum Boulevard SW), which apparently started with a fight, according to Sgt. John Urquhart of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

“Sounds like the fight started in the bar over one guy flirting with another guy’s girlfriend. Or something,” said Urquhart.

Urquhart added:

“The shot guy has a wound that is not life threatening. He and his friend were less than cooperative with the police.”

The shooting victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The shooter is still at large, and there have been no arrests.

i was at wah long sports bar last night and shortly after the dj called last call, 2 guys get into a fight by the front door and one guy shoots the other with what i think was a 22 cal pistol… right in the stomach. i havent heard anything about it in the news but the police told me just as they were escorting me out of the bar that the kid might not survive it. when is somebody going to do something about this place? for a long time it had calmed down quite a bit and the music has definitely changed for the better.. but now theres fights all the time and this shooting. i will probably never go there again because of this. that bullet could have hit me!

This was basically a fight in the bar on the 29th about 1:30 AM. But then somebody pulled out a gun and shot one of the fighters in the stomach. His buddies tried to drive him to Harborview but we saw the speeding car, stopped it, and made the guy go in an ambulance.

Sounds like the fight started in the bar over one guy flirting with another guy’s girlfriend. Or something.

BTB Advertiser The Tin Theater will be showing the big Seahawks playoff game against Chicago this Sunday, Jan. 16th on their big HDTV screen.

Doors will open at 9am, the game starts at 10am, and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis in the theater.

The entire bar will be open as well.
