From their MySpace page:

Ang Pambansang Banda ng Pilipinas Parokya ni Edgar is a bunch of guys, six to be exact, who unexpectedly find themselves in a proper band, with a proper recording contract with a proper record company (Universal Records), which gives them a proper”recording career”. Parokya ni Edgar is Chito Miranda and Vinci Montaner on vocals, Darius Semaña and Gabriel CheeKee on guitars, Buhawi Meneses on bass and Dindin Moreno on drums. But beneath the silly gags and the punchlines, the Parokya Band has matured musically. Chief lyricist and frontman Chito Miranda once declared: “Nagti-trip lang talaga kami, eh.” But by jokester/slacker standards, this band is already an overachievers: six albums with an endless string of hit singles (including one that inspired a movie), loads of music awards, and a fan base that extends all the way from Aparri to Tawi-Tawi. What could be a greater feat than have the whole country chanting: “Hoy-hoy-hoy-hoy-hoy-hoy!”? Countless Gold and Platinum Record Sales Awards, MTV Awards and Awit Awards trophies later, PnE is showing no signs of slowing down with their latest release Halina Sa Parokya . Like any other Parokya album; comic skits, spoofs and heaps of classic Parokya humor abound in Halina Sa Parokya. The idea for their album artwork was inspired partly by the Department of Tourism thrust to promote various tourist destinations and local festivities via their Wow Philippines campaign (if you can recall the TV advertisement which featured Regine Velasquez). The album was also inspired by both the popular children’s TV show Sesame Street and its local counterpart Batibot . Taking aloook at the album cover alone, you will laugh at the colorful characters Chito, Buwi, Vinci, Gab, Darious and Dindin portray! And surely, too, it will be more obvious to tell why Parokya ni Edgar has been dubbed as “Pambansang Banda ng Pilipinas.”

Other blurbs:

The band is best known for its novel rock songs which are often satirically twisted covers of popular songs. The music band has since experimented with musical styles of one song with another substituting alternative rock for pop rock, rapcore for funk and so on, much to the comic relief of their audience. They called themselves “Skembergs” at first, when their band consisted of three local vocalists- Gabrielle”Gab” Ignatius Chee-Kee, Alfonso Miranda “Chito” aka, Jr, Francis Vincent Montaner “Vinci”, and two guitarists, Jerick and Miko. They would practice after-school to perfect their talents in music before playing at the Eraserheads concert. The Eraserheads concert success propelled them to add a bassist and a drummer – Buhawi Meneses and Dindin Moreno and also rename the band as Parokya ni Edgar. The guitarists Jerick and Miko left the band after high school to take up other career interests. This paved the way for guitarist Darius Semaña to join the band.

Parokya ni Edgar (English translation: Parish of Edgar) is a Filipino band that was formed in 1993 by a group of Ateneo de Manila High School students. The band is famous and most lauded for its original rock novelty songs and often satirical covers of famous songs. The band has since transcended musical genres, varying styles from one song to another – alternative rock to pop rock, funk to rapcore, and so on – while providing comic relief to their listeners.

The band soon started playing at the legendary local band hub, Club Dredd. Coming out during the height of the Pinoy rock explosion, with the Filipino rock community giving in to the influence of especially grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Parokya ni Edgar played like no other. Their jokes, silly antics, and outrageous performances paved the way to the popularity that they currently enjoy.

Eventually, the late managing director of Universal Records, Bella Dy Tan, signed them as contract artists after witnessing one of their performances at Club Dredd. Soon their initial recordings such as Buloy, Trip and Lutong Bahay were heard across the nation. Their first album, Khangkhungkherrnitz became a triple platinum hit in the Philippines having sold 120,000 units. The other 3 albums include Buruguduystunstugudunstuy (triple platinum), Jingle Balls Silent Night Holy Cow (gold), and Gulong Itlog Gulong (platinum).

Here are some videos of the band showcasing their wide range of music styles:

Parokya Ni Edgar featuring Kamikazee “Ordertaker” (this song appears to be about ordering food in a restaurant, it ROCKS, has had 905,148 views on Youtube; and after viewing you’ll be chanting “Waiter! Order!” over and over):

by Mark Neuman

We sat down recently for a talk with King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg.

Dan joked while recollecting his days playing both offense and defense for Highline High School’s football team in the late 1970’s.

“We were a small team, but we were slow.”

The Pirates won, perhaps, four games during the three years Dan was there.

“But really, I have to say that learning to lose and learning to do so with some grace and class is part of learning to live,” he said. “I think I may have learned more by being on a losing team than I would have being on a state championship team.”

Dan went on to the University of Washington for his BA in Political Science and a law degree.

“My favorite professor in law school was the one that scared me the most. His name was Arval Morris, a constitutional law professor. He was an intellectual giant,” Dan said. “I was in awe of him because of his ability to analyze and his depth of knowledge.

“He taught us so much about constitutional law and the rules of criminal law and how the government interacts with its citizens. The contract between government and citizens is the Constitution.

“It’s a fascinating area because we continue to define what we mean by that contract. The Constitution is a living, breathing document in my office because we look at Fourth and Fifth and Sixth Amendment issues every day as we analyze cases.

“I love the law, and I see those years in law school as formative years,” Dan added. “The prosecutor has a significant role in moving law in new directions. A prosecutor can actually direct traffic.”

JUVENILES WITH GUNS
One area where Dan is directing traffic deals with attempting to separate kids from gang activity before they fire a weapon in commission of a crime.

“You would think that when a 16 or 17 year-old youth is caught with a handgun that we would bring to bear all of our resources because this is a giant red flag. ‘We better pay attention to this kid,’” Dan said. “But the truth is that current state law builds in a tolerance where literally nothing happens until (there are) five felony convictions.

“And only then the kid, by law, would go to a Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration facility, let’s say Echo Glen, for a period of time.

“So the message that we send to a kid is that gun possession is not a big deal.”

Dan Satterberg and The State Prosecutors Association want to change that. They are pressing the Washington State Legislature to make changes to the law during the upcoming legislative session such that a juvenile found in illegal possession of a handgun will “get an immediate response from the system. We don’t wait. The kid gets removed from the community and put into Echo Glen,” he said.

“And while there the juvenile can get help with tried and true programs such as Moral Recognition Therapy which helps him understand his options and the potential consequences of his future actions.”

Dan greets one of the courthouse companions.

CANINE COMPANION PROGRAM
Dan spoke about the relatively new Canine Companion Program which involves having a dog in the courthouse to help calm the nerves of those going through the legal process.

“We have a dog in our office. Her name is Ellie, a six year-old Golden Lab. Ellie’s full time job is to come in and lay on the floor and look up at you with doe eyes. She puts kids at ease. We use her with our elder abuse cases as well.

“Once we got Ellie on board we realized this is an essential part of what we need to do to put witnesses and victims at ease. We have a lot of children who come into our office to talk about sexual abuse that happened to them or some scary moment, and when they see the dog all of a sudden everything’s okay. And they want to come back to see Ellie again.

“We even bring the dog up to drug court. Ellie will put her head in the lap of someone who may be heading to prison because they screwed up.

“Ellie doesn’t discriminate. Ellie loves everybody.”

NORM MALENG AND THE JOB OF PROSECUTOR
The duties of King County Prosecutor involve overseeing a staff of about 500, including 220 attorneys. The Office of the Prosecutor has an annual budget of $56 million.

Those duties fell on Dan’s shoulders quite unexpectedly in the spring of 2007 when long time Prosecutor Norm Maleng died suddenly at the age of 68.

Dan was appointed by the King County Council to serve as prosecutor and subsequently won election to serve the remainder of the full term.

“It was a great honor for me to work with Norm Maleng for 17 years. I was just 29-years old when he selected me to be his chief of staff.

“What I learned from Norm was not so much about the law as about life in general. I started with him shortly after he’d lost his daughter in a tragic sledding accident. So he was in many stages of grief and I learned an awful lot about dealing with people in grief.

“One of the things that he taught me was that every one of the thousands of felony cases we deal with involves a human tragedy, a story of someone’s hurt or loss or suffering.

“Norm would always start out a meeting with a homicide victim’s family by reaching out and saying how sorry he was that this happened to their family. He would say ‘Tell me about your son or daughter.’ To make that case and that person alive. The case wasn’t just a file full of papers.

“I try to keep that practice alive. What makes this job so meaningful is the ability to reach out and talk to victims and their families.”

THE FAMILY AND THE BAND
Dan and his wife, Linda, have two children and live in Normandy Park.

When he finds the time, Dan loves rocking out with his pals in their band The Approximations. Here’s info from their website:

Organized by bass player and singer Dan Satterberg (aka the King County Prosecutor), the band includes harmonica player and vocalist Bill Mattocks leader of the Bill Mattocks Band, keyboardist and vocalist Michael Hepburn from the nationally known 80’s R&B group Pleasure; drummer and vocalist Rusty Fallis, guitarist Tom Pratt, guitarist and vocalist John Rankin, percussionist and drummer Fred Staples, vocalists Linda Norman and Michelle Purnell-Hepburn. Tom, Rusty, Dan and John also play and record original songs as the Treehouse Dreamers.  With such a large band and wide array of musical backgrounds, the Approximations are likely to play songs by Smokey Robinson, the Beatles, AC/DC, Savoy Brown, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fleetwood Mac and Kings of Leon all in the same set.

The Approximations have played their full, multi-faceted, danceable rock sets in Seattle venues such as the Showbox, Showbox Sodo, Mountaineers Club, and the Highway 99 Blues Club entertaining for private functions, special occasions, and benefits for the Domestic Violence Coalition, and the American Cancer society among others.

The band’s website is here, and you can view videos of the band in action here.

You can catch The Approximations at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (located at 435 SW 152nd Street in Burien), this Friday night, Sept. 18th:

.. Otherwise officially began in the summer of 2008, when Forry and Steph who had been been working on new material by themselves joined up with Chris Kiger on drums and Justin Cormier on bass. “It all came together so quickly and naturally”. They had their CD Release Party here on July 2nd, then played at the Tree Tree Point 4th of July party, and now Highline High School grad Trevor Rasmussen’s band, Boomerang Summer, is returning to Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub this Thursday, Sept. 3rd.

Rasmussen attended Sylvester Middle School, graduated from Highline High School and spent the better part of his childhood running around Burien – his mother was a P.E. teacher at Sylvester for 25 years. He moved back to Seattle two years ago after pursuing a full-time music career in Portland, and then L.A. where his dream was cut short when he broke his neck while surfing. After two years of rehab and a complete change of perspective he is now recovered, working fulltime as a publicist in his hometown and part-time as lead singer, saxophonist and songwriter for Boomerang Summer – something he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to do again.

Boomerang Summer consists of three Highline High School grads, including Trevor Rasmussen, Ian McKamey and Ben Johnston.

It’s even more special that he serendipitously connected with Highline High School grads and Burien natives Ian McKamey, guitar, and Ben Johnston, drums, to form the new band over the past year. All three attended HHS, played in the jazz and symphonic band.

On Thursday, Sept. 3rd the band will bring their infectious live show back to Burien’s Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub, which is located at 435 SW 152nd Street.

With only two sizzlin’ summer shows left, make sure you check out the hottest FREE ticket in the Waterland City Wednesday night (Aug. 12th) – Handful of Luvin, playin’ just down the road a bit at the Des Moines Beach Park beginning at 7pm.

Fresh off the largest concert turnout to date with last week’s performance by The Paperboys, Snohomish Artists Guild and the Des Moines Arts Commission will play host to this northwest band, who will play rain or shine! If the sky does open up, the Des Moines Parks Dept. has arranged for an alternate site indoors, so come to the park to support wonderful live music.

Be sure to bring a chair or blanket and dress for our NW summer weather, and don’t miss your chance to see great talent in our community free of charge. Des Moines Beach park is located at 22030 Cliff Avenue South (see map here).

Here’s more info about Handful of Luvin’:

The band ‘Handful of Luvin’ originally began in the spring of 2002 when front man David John & Andrew Joslyn (fiddler) met at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. At the time David John was promoting his own second self-produced solo album ‘Blue Room,’ and had a considerable fan following in Seattle and Bellingham. Andrew on the other hand was a pretty prominent classical musician until he decided to pursue freer styles with fiddle playing such as Scots Irish, blues, and rock fiddle/violin. When the two met, and began playing with each other, Andrew’s fiddle complimented David’s unique guitar work and soulful vocals perfectly. In the fall of 2003 they began performing together & immediately realized the potential of their sound, and quickly set about forming a band.

Through various transformations & several musicians (much love and Thanks to Billy Hooper, David Stern, Becky, and Logger), the band eventually came across Patrick Files late in 2004 (bass guitar). Pat’s own background with funk, rock, and thrash metal brought a whole new dimension of musical variety into the band.

Within two months, in early 2005, Pat’s friend Mike Knight (drummer) was recruited as the final member into the band. Originally Mike was apart of the indie-jam rock band ‘Carraway’ and produced several recordings with them. Within HOL he is able to use his extensive expertise with the drums & percussion, and also has an uncanny attention to detail which keeps the band on point.

Every member of the band brings their own entirely unique background with music to the band whether its gypsy, folk, funk, reggae, or rock. When these guys come together, in any setting, it is never disappointing. Handful of Luvin’ has an energy that is unparalleled as well as contagious. ln the end Handful of Luvin’ is a number of things: it is what the fans and the audience are left with after a HOL show; and it is about five very diverse musicians who love music and try to communicate that to everyone.

Here’s a handful of videos of Handful of Luvin’::

B-Town Blog Advertiser Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub will be hosting an unusual and fun two-man band called “Two Buck Chuck” from 8pm – 11pm on the last Thursday of every month beginning July 30th (and again Aug. 27th, Sept. 24th & Oct. 29th).

According to our friends at Mick’s:

“There will be no cover charge, and Happy Hour will be from 9-11pm which consists of $2.50 domestic beers and $3.50 import beers. All 13 beers on tap are on special during happy hour. There is also a happy hour food menu which is very inexpensive.”

Two Buck Chuck consists of brothers Ryan and Sean Mefferd, both on acoustic guitar and vocals, focusing on tight vocal harmonies while creating their playlist on the fly, mostly through audience requests or by drawing from their extensive knowledge of past and present radio hits, including the often-hilarious kitschy crap, which when done by these guys, becomes comedy gold (if you don’t believe us, just listen to the MP3s below).

According to their website:

“I personally love to come in when Two Buck Chuck is playing. I thoroughly enjoy the music” — Duke Moscrip, Owner, Duke’s Chowderhouse

For over a dozen years, whether they were band mates or watching one another from the wings, Ryan and Sean have always given each other mutual support and admiration. The Mefferds have each honed their crafts alongside and amongst many of the Northwest’s marquee musicians and producers, be they rock, pop, country, or R&B. In the summer of 2003 the brothers realized their common passion and Two Buck Chuck made their debut.

“Growing up together we were exposed to the same music. Whether we were listening to Boston or R.E.M on our own terms or being force-fed Neil Diamond and John Denver by our parents, we took it all in together. Music has always been in our lives and we continue to take in the Coldplays, Toby Keiths or Jack Johnsons of today with the same kind of appetite and appreciation.” — The Chucks

Two Buck Chuck offers a high-energy alternative where a full band is too much and a DJ is not enough. From Elvis to Britney, ABBA to Zeppelin, their seemingly endless repertoire of familiar songs is ever expanding. Raise a glass and sing along!

Highline High School grad Trevor Rasmussen’s band, Boomerang Summer, is holding a CD release party for their debut EP “Breathe” at Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (BTB Advertiser) on Thursday, July 2nd.

Rasmussen attended Sylvester Middle School, graduated from Highline High and spent the better part of his childhood running around Burien – his mother was a P.E. teacher at Sylvester for 25 years.

“I’m as lucky as they come, because I could just as easily be in a very worse situation,“ says Trevor. “We named the band Boomerang Summer, as it represents the way things come back around if you let them. For me, getting a second chance at something like this makes it that much more special.”

He has no delusions of grandeur, however, and he’s not quitting his day job. His band’s debut five-song EP is not flashy, nor does it shoot for that big radio single – it does, however, give a proper introduction to their musical outlook – diverse arrangements, thoughtful songwriting and great playing mixed with a hummable simplicity.

From the smart pop-blues of “Simple” and the lighthearted political swing of “Save” to the blast of saxophones and fast paced Latin sojourns of the title track, “Breathe,” the music moves seamlessly through several genres and styles. And whether it’s the epic Jimi Hendrix style solo that erupts from the “live in the moment” anthem “Say Goodbye” or the hushed melodic questions asked in “The Game,” the EP makes one thing clear – these guys are bringing it back to playing music for music’s sake.

All veterans of the regional musical landscape, Trevor has made sure the group has had one thing in mind since they kicked off their first rehearsal in guitarist Ian McKamey’s leaky basement.

“Let it happen,” he says. “We weren’t worried about the length of the tunes, sticking to a particular style or getting jammed up in trying to fit into a particular genre. The guys put their hearts and souls into the music and took each song to where they thought it wanted to go. Everything else has followed from there.”

From the live show to the record, the synergy of the group has surprised even them.

“We all have arrived from such different places musically,” says Ian McKamey, whose professional music career started at age 15 opening for Pat Travers. “Amazingly, we’re almost always on the same page and somehow, it all works.”

Trevor Rasmussen is a Burien native whose band will be holding a CD release party at Mick Kelly's on Thurs., July 2nd.

The band has had an impressive response at its first few debut shows and is quickly building on the respective member’s longtime fan bases in both the Seattle and Portland areas. The aptly titled Breathe will be available online and in NW stores July 24, just in time to heat up summer.

“The most important thing to us is that we go out there, play great music and make sure everyone present has a good time.”

Thus, he guarantees three things at a Boomerang Summer show – good vibes, great songs and a soulful explosion of musical diversity – so far, so good. Perspective has its perks.

And while this may be another CD release party for most, for Highline High grad and lead singer/songwriter Trevor Rasmussen it is something very special.

On Thursday, July 2nd the band will bring their infectious live show to Burien’s Mick Kelly’s Irish Pub (located at 435 SW 152nd Street) to offer the CD – before its July 24th release – to their neighborhood fans.

The Seattle Weekly has an interesting story on how Normandy Park resident Eddie Rodriguez and his band, Los Volcanes, ended up recording the song “Red, Red Wine” for pop legend Neil Diamond.

And this Friday (Feb. 6th), Eddie and his band will be playing it at a tribute to Diamond in LA. Other bands on the bill include Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and Tim McGraw, among others

Here’s a video we found of Los Volcanes on MySpace:

So Fall Out Boy’s not just a bunch of pretty faces?

With all the recording and touring this band’s been doing lately, and with Pete Wentz and his lovely bride Ashlee Simpson just having their baby, it’s hard to believe these guys have time to do anything extra.  But they made time for a Seattle-based charity that we’ve covered before called For the Children of the World.

Fall Out Boy was kind enough to autograph two guitars that will be auctioned off to help the children of Chernobyl.

The first of the signed guitars is on eBay right now, just in time for Christmas:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300279803901&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DSelling

NOTE: Bid now, bid often, as this auction ends Tuesday, Dec. 16th at 5pm!

Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley were all backstage at the Paramount last Thursday to sign the guitars and went on to perform at KISS-FM’s Jingle Bell Bash.  What a concert and what a great group of guys!!

Many other celebrities have helped out For the Children of the World in the past, including:

  • My Chemical Romance
  • The Shins
  • Billy Talent
  • Devo (yes, Devo!!)

For the Children of the World is a non-profit organization whose mission is to offer care, compassion and hope to children and families who have been affected by the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl Nuclear accident.  For the past 13 years, they have accomplished this by hosting children from the country of Belarus.

Over 85 children come to the Seattle area each summer (including several Burien-area homes) for 6 weeks for a health respite. Doctors have found that a six week stay in a clean environment with good nutrition can completely recover the children’s immune system.

For more information, or to learn how you can help, please visit For the Children of the World’s website.

Cynthia Reid is an owner/agent at John L. Scott Westwood, who previously wrote these two stories about For the Children of the World for the B-Town Blog:

The B-Town Blog proudly plugs in its amp, cranks the volume up to 9.6 (we broke it trying to recreate a scene from “This is Spinal Tap“) and presents our latest Advertiser(s): Lost in the Bamboo and The Beat Merchants!

That’s two, two…two bands for the price of one!

Lost in the Bamboo is an original alternative/Americana band writing and performing songs in the vein of Weezer, The Gin Blossoms, and Deathcab for Cutie.

Started in 2007 by the husband/wife team of Ted and Jessica Walker, LIB has steadily garnered a loyal following of fans hooked on their infectious grooves. Lead by vocalist Gary Mullin, who is also an accomplished songwriter and performer, LIB is well known for their exciting live shows that typically include audience participation and humor.

The band is rounded out by the incredible musicianship of lead guitarist Kelly Crabtree and John Arvizu, who played together in the band Sugar Water prior to joining LIB.

Gary, Ted, and Jessica also happen to have another working band with a growing following – The Beat Merchants, formerly known as Gray Sky Falling, is a cover dance band playing hits from the 60’s to today. The Beat Merchants also include guitar virtuoso Michael Nakagawa.

So if you’re a club or a group needing live music, they have you covered whether you want catchy originals, or to dance to your favorite hits from your iPod.

For booking info, contact Ted Walker at gotrhythm@hotmail.com

And if you hear or read that either act is playing, be sure to catch them live, your feet and booty will thank you.

Lost in the Bamboo can be seen/heard at:

  • Oct. 20th at The High Dive
  • Oct. 22nd at The Central Saloon
  • Nov. 23rd at The High Dive along with The Beat Merchants

And on a personal note, we here at the B-Town Blog would love to give a serious shout-out to LIB’s founder, Ted Walker, without whose help we never woulda had our first-ever B-Town BlogstockAPalooza show way back in early September.

Speaking of which, here’s a video of Lost in the Bamboo playing at said event:

Last Saturday night (Sept. 6th) we sponsored an outdoor mini concert/music stage on SW 152nd and 10th Ave SW in Olde Burien at B-Town’s annual Artwalk.

We called it B-Town BlogstockAPalooza, and we had a great turnout (most likely due to the fact that both The Mark and The Tin Room featuring “extended outdoor seating”).

The show featured four bands:

Here’s one of many videos we shot, this one an annotated “Pop-Up Video” styled clip featuring the original song “Oceans” by Lost in the Bamboo, whose founding member Ted Walker was instrumental (pun intended) in helping us line up the bands and get the show done:

And it might look/sound something like this (doing Led Zep’s “Kashmir“), which was shot when AIC played w/NW Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya in 2007:

The Art ThievesIn case you haven’t made plans yet for tonight, here’s an idea:

Local band “The Art Thieves” will be showcasing their masterpieces (and axes) tonight from 8pm+ at Wayne’s World Tavern, which is located at 1832 South 120th in the Boulevard Park part o’B-Town (kinda near the BP branch library).

According to their website:

The Art Thieves began as a few guys answering ads on Craigslist back in the spring of 2005: Mike Mesford and Dave Heuman got together for the sake of jamming on their guitars and sharing their love of music.

Two others answered ads and a foursome was created of Mike, Dave, Tom LehnerBruce DeGrado (drums).

The four musicians got together in late February and played somewhat cohesively, with Tom filling in the sound with his great vocals. Kurt Keydel, who had jammed with Mike on acoustic guitars earlier in the year, called him back up to see what he was doing.

Mike mentioned that he was jamming with other players and that they needed a keyboard player. Kurt had an old Roland Synthesizer and decided to tag along in late April. (bass) and that they needed a keyboard player. Kurt had an old Roland Synthesizer and decided to tag along in late April.
