The Environmental Science Center (ESC) on Thursday (Feb. 9) announced the winners of the Earth Day Kids’ Art Contest:

Congratulations go out to Anne Wilhite of Mr. Matthews’ 4th grade class at Marvista Elementary for winning the Grand Prize:

Ngan Nguyen of Ms. Miller’s 6th grade class at Cedarhurst Elementary also won as a Finalist:

Payton May of Mrs. Barker’s class, also Marvista Elementary, was selected as a Finalist:

A total of 103 pieces of artwork were submitted from eight schools and programs in the areas served by ESC. Students were asked to submit work that inspired others to take care of the earth. The work was judged by three jury members, two from the Burien Arts Commission. Judging criteria included artistic merit, creativity, and originality. Ms. Wilhite’s art expressed what the world could look like if we all do our part to protect the environment. Ms. May’s more literal artwork reminds the viewers to THINK of important actions, such as commuting and composting, that will provide a greener place for us all. Ms. Nguyen’s art inspires people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to take part in protecting the world.

To give special recognition to the Grand Prize winner, the former Mayor of Burien, Joan McGilton presented the award to Anne in front of her class. After the ceremony, students eagerly waited to have a chance to talk with the former Mayor and to shake her hand. ESC sincerely thanks McGilton for her continued support of ESC and our local schools. ESC along with its supporters is proud to continue inspiring each of these three young artists with an artist’s tote containing:

Artist & Craftsman Donation- heart-shaped craft box, craft tissue paper, craft glue, and set of paintbrushes

Utrecht Art Supplies Donation- artist’s sketchbook, set of pencils, and eraser

Beading kit

Sculpting sticks

Anne Wilhite’s will be featured on the invitations to ESC’s Annual Earth Day Dinner & Auction as well as on ESC’s website. Additionally, the Grand Prize included a one-year membership for a family of five to the Seattle Aquarium. One Finalist received a Family Fun Pack to the Woodland Park Zoo and the other received admission for four to the Seattle Bug Safari and admission for two to the Pacific Science Center and IMAX theater. All participants were recognized for their submissions with a certificate of participation. Thank you to all the students and teachers who submitted these wonderful works of art. We look forward to seeing more next year!

But put that extra thick Sharpie away Mr. Tagger – this is not an open call for random graffiti – this is a legitimate call for an Artist(s) to paint a real mural.

The Dollar Tree is officially located at 250 SW 152nd Street, but the mural is on 4th Ave SW, just across from the city hall garage.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 24th.

Here’s more from a press release:

CALL TO ARTISTS City of Burien Arts Commission Mural Project

Eligibility: This project is open to all Northwest artists.

Deadline: Friday, February 24th. This is not a postmark deadline.

Project Budget: $12,000, to be inclusive of materials

The City of Burien and the Burien Arts Commission is seeking an artist or artist team to create a dynamic, innovative mural on the exterior surface on the side of a downtown Burien building. The building is on 4th SW between 150th and 152nd Street and is currently leased by The Dollar Store. The building wall is on a busy pedestrian friendly arterial and is across the street from the new Burien Town Square, which is the community’s central gathering point. The new Burien Library and City Hall are also located in this area.

The wall is painted concrete and is 18 feet high by 160 feet wide. It is required that the artist cover at least 50% of the wall with the mural. The artist will be required to include some type of community aspect in the design and/or creation process. This opportunity is intended as a community-building opportunity that can also create a sense of wonder and pride in the Burien downtown. The artwork will transform this large white wall into an interesting and exciting focal point and graffiti deterrent.

Artwork Opportunity:
The City of Burien is seeking an artist or artist team to develop, design and create a mural project that involves the Burien community in some way, to be determined by the artist. The project should reflect a thematic aspect of the community, such as growth, change, history, diversity, etc. The commissioned artwork should be created in media that is suitable for an exterior application directly on the concrete wall. The design will be presented to the Burien Arts Commission, Burien City Council and Dollar Store stakeholders prior to the final approval.

The $12,000 project budget includes the artist’s design fees, compensation and travel expenses, all materials and fabrication costs, shipping and transportation of materials to the site, preparation of mural site, installation of the artwork, application of protective coating if needed, and any applicable taxes and/or insurance.

About Burien:
Burien is a 100-year-old waterfront community with six miles of Puget Sound shoreline and mountain views. Burien is 16 miles south of Downtown Seattle. Burien is a diverse community with over 50 languages spoken in the homes of Burien area students. Over the last several years Burien has been busy rebuilding and reinventing itself. The downtown’s major arterial received a makeover and the new Burien Town Square opened its first buildings and park in 2009. Town Square has reshaped the downtown area into a central gathering point for the community. The city is also proud to be the home for many not-for profit arts organizations including an orchestra, live theatre, and choral and dance groups. The city has become an art pocket of the Northwest with unique arts projects such as B/ IAS (Burien Interim Art Space) and the yearly lantern festival “Arts A Glow”.

Application Materials:
Written application materials will be photocopied for the panelists. Please do not staple or bind application materials. Please submit written materials on plain white 8 1?2 x 11 paper.

Two local Photographers will have their work featured in a free ‘Mobile Photography Gallery Exhibit’ with an Opening Reception on Thursday, Jan. 5th at Zeitgeist Coffee (171 S. Jackson Street) in downtown Seattle.

The gallery will focus on photography produced on a mobile device, and will be on exhibit beginning at 5 p.m., with live music from DJ Spinja (local DJ celebrity) until 8 p.m. for the Opening Reception, which will be held Jan. 5th during Seattle’s famous First Thursdays Art Walk.

A Closing Ceremony will be held Jan. 28, 2012 at 3 p.m., and will begin with a photowalk/shootout through Pioneer Square. This is an opportunity for Q&A with the photographers about their photographs, processes, and inspirations.

The gallery will remain until Feb. 1, 2012.

The local photogs included in the gallery are Mellow Longfellow and Jennifer Phillips-Dilly, both from the Burien area.

Jennifer said:

“There is almost nothing I love more than when objects and light align to create undeniable clarity that demands my attention.

I grew up in Seattle, but as soon as I’d saved enough money for a house, I chose the Burien area. I’ve spent many glorious (and soggy) hours at Seahurst Park and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I went to the Northwest School of the Arts, Humanities, and Environment in Seattle (with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Jason Finn of The Presidents of the United States, annnnd Steve Turner of Mudhoney) and then The Evergreen State College in Olympia. My focus of study was always in the arts and humanities, but I’ve worked full-time for Group Health Cooperative for over 20 years in various positions. Not until I found a place to share my photos on Instagram (an iPhone app) did I become completely obsessed with taking and editing photos with my iPhone.

You can find samples of my photos on Flickr here, or find me on Instagram as ‘eelnej’.”

Here’s more from a press release:

The Darkroom Series: In today’s world of constantly evolving technology, mobile photography is an emerging art form. The advancements in functionality and design for cameras on the iPhone and Android platforms have been astounding. The imaging is simply amazing, and the artistic content truly fascinating. Anyone with a camera phone can snap a picture or preserve a moment. What we present to you in this series are individuals taking mobile photography to higher levels; the casual user as Artist, the casual user as Photographer.

In towns and cities, in rural and urban areas all over the world, mobile photographers have the ability to capture moments in time with unprecedented clarity. The advantage mobile devices or smart phones provide is that ultra-spontaneous element: Your phone, your camera, is always with you. Every ordinary moment becomes an opportunity to compose a stunning photograph. The Darkroom Series will show that mobile devices are not just phones, but are now valid cameras and darkrooms. A photographer can now edit, much like in a darkroom, the shots they take on their mobile device through a multitude of apps. All of which can create the same effects of an actual darkroom. This series will highlight mobile device photographers from Seattle and the Puget Sound who continue to amaze through mobile device imaging.

Juxt: Originating in 2011, is an organization designed to cultivate and foster art created through mobile device technology. Juxt believes that through cultivation and fostering of art created by casual users through social networking, that this community will flourish. Mobile device technology has empowered the casual user to tap into their creative and artistic side. This artistic merit is where Juxt finds its niche in ensuring legitimacy in the art form. Juxt staff are artists themselves with long histories of community arts organizing and event planning.
Twenty-seven artworks by twenty seven artists are on display, and an artist reception and awards presentation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25th, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The juror, Barbara Benedetti Newton, is a Signature Member of the Northwest Pastel Society, juried member of Women Painters of Washington since 1998, and Charter Member, Signature Member and past President of the Colored Pencil Society of America.

Artists United is a club of visual artists, made up of amateur, professional, and retired artists. Originally started in 1949 by a group of watercolor painters living in the Burien area, the group has grown to include members from throughout South King County, working in a variety of media: drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and jewelry. Our aims are to encourage individual artistic development and to bring art into the community.

Artists United meets monthly at the Cove in Normandy Park, and offers demonstrations by local professional artists working in various art media. Our Annual Juried Show is a public exhibit produced by members, juried by professional artists, with awards presented to the winning artists. The Autumn Art Fest is a show and sale of artworks by members held every fall at the Cove in Normandy Park. This event attracts patrons from throughout the Puget sound area. The Exhibits Program allows members to display artwork in selected local venues, on a rotational year round basis, and the monthly newsletter is a publication of member news, art opportunities and art related information.

It’s bound to be a busy Saturday in the White Center area, as Jubilee Days continues with an all-day Street Fair (on 17th from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m., more info here), then from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. it’s the White Center 3rd Saturday Art Walk, which will take place at various businesses in the Dub C.

And this should be an interesting art walk as well, with two locations planning on showcasing nude body painting by local muralist Ryan Henry Ward.

Here’s more from the event Organizers:

Still excited after last months film festival?! That’s what we wanted to hear. Now put all of that excitement into our Live Painting Extravaganza! We are bringing you 13+ local artists who will be making their magic on the streets of White Center! Add to that -the fun vibrations of Jubilee Days and you have a recipe for Awesome! Come watch talented artists put their passion on canvas. If you have ever looked at a piece of art and wondered ‘How DO they DO that??’. White Center Art Walk has the answer- and it’s not 42…

Big Al Brewing & Herban Legends will both be hosting groups of artists at their locations. Herban Legends will have nude body painting crafted by local muralist Ryan Henry Ward. If you haven’t seen some of his organic work, you are missing out. These ladies always end up so freakin cute you want to hug them…but you can’t…because they are covered in paint.

**Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Maggie Schneider: Local multi-media artist that has done oodles to help promote the local art scene, Maggie’s range is all over the board. She recently did a project capturing urban wall spaces. She has also been known to create urban wall spaces herself. We are excited to see what genre of work she brings to brighten Big Al Brewing, not that they need it; have you had the Lowman Brau!?

Company (9608 16th SW): Corianton Hale: Graphic Design- Company is not messin’ around this month. They are hosting an entire weekend of fantastic. All month the graphic design work of Corianton will rock your ever-lusting memory. Actually, some of it may even be planted in your memory since Corianton has made oodles of your favorite ‘Stranger’ covers. Come in, eat some wings and rock your heart out. They open at noon for this particular Saturday; they are that serious about it.

If you need to fill your musical heart this weekend Company is hosting: Conniption Fits, The Blue Ribbon Boys, Steel Tigers of Death & Full Tilts very own Justin- showcasing his skilz with the musics! Come drink and rock at the same time.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Bellevue College- Class of ’10 Photography— Shoot to Show – Water + Interesting Images- Sadly, Dubsea won’t be open for this art walk but they will be showcasing the photography from the 2010 graduating class at Bellevue College all month. Stop by, have a delicious coffee beverage of your choosing and soak in the snapshots from yesteryear.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Patricia Ariel: Mixed Media- I wish that words could do Patricia’s work justice but there is no way to convey how magical her pieces are. They have a figurative theme that is layered with bold color; interlaced with a dynamic- art- nouveau-feel Patricia really drives home the words ‘wow’ and ‘I wish I could do that’. We are excited to have her as one of our participating live painters as well! Keep your eyes peeled!

Café Rozella (9434 Delridge Way SW): TBA

Dzul Tattoo (9622-B 16th Ave SW): Katie & Alex – Black & White Photography. Drop in for funky grooves and an eye-full of new body ink. Updated B&W photos of the newest generation of ink, dripping with permanence. This shop has spirit and enough eye-candy to chew on for days.

3.14 (9602 16th Ave SW): Amara Kopakova: Acrylic Paintings- Moody, organic paintings that keep your eye moving. Kopakova is no foreigner to keeping your attention. Subject matter? People…or not…or landscape…or abstract… Wait, what was the question? Have you had a pastry on a stick yet? You should do that. Then write a strongly worded letter about it. Amara will be back again this month- she will also be one of our live painters…Are you getting excited yet??? 3.14 is also hosting music! They will have singer/songwriter Margoux Lesourd for your inner ear excitement.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Dave Ryan: Mixed Media- Full Tilt has found its niche with record art. They’re loud, they’re fun, they have graphic images on them, but mostly, they are guaranteed to make you smile. Dave Ryan is coming through with some fun art. It’s totally worth it to pop in and suck down some Ube ice cream while the green walls spin records for you.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW) – Chau Dang: Curious Comics- I’ve been checking back to this website for new works since I found it in my inbox. These are super-clever and highly entertaining. Simple line drawings with a message that makes you chuckle repeatedly. We all believe that laughing and pizza go together, yes? Yes, we do. That is why you should make it happen. Pizza you can believe in with comics you can laugh at.

**Herban Legends (Medical Marijuana Dispensary)- (9619 16th Ave SW)- Group Show!- These guys are showcasing some of the Northwest’s finest artists: Jenna Colby, Brendan Wenburg, Jeremy Orsben, Lawrence Seward, Matthew Carson & Sarah Bareck. Live Grooves from DJ BioFunk? Only if you’re lucky. Mind your P’s & Q’s – the art is worth drooling over. No seriously, bring a napkin. Also, for this months art walk these fantastic folks are bringing you Live Painting from Jenna Colby, Brendan Wenburg & Ryan Henry Ward! Ryan will be doing nude body painting as well. Come see how he transforms the female form into a walking, talking Henry original. **Indicates hosting 3 or more Live Painters.

LIVE PAINTING! WHAT? LIVE PAINTING! YEAH? LIVE PAINTING-NOW! WCAW!
