We’d like to take a self-indulgent moment to send a huge shout-out to all our Readers for another great month of traffic – The B-Town Blog had nearly 56,000 Unique Visitors during the month of January, 2012!

Here are our statistics from Google Analytics, showing a total of 55,760 Unique Visitors and 104,679 Pageviews for January::

Click image to see larger version.

We’re proud of our success here at The B-Town Blog, because we’ve worked very hard since 2007 to continually serve the Community we live, work, shop and spend in by updating our website daily with professionally-produced, award-winning local Journalism (we were named ‘Best Hyperlocal Website‘ in the entire northwest by the Society of Professional Journalists last May).

And we’d like to point a few things out to our Readers, as well as any businesses considering Advertising:

We are (far as we know) the only local website in the entire country that is absolutely transparent in its website traffic statistics – something you will NOT see on any other competing “local” websites, both new and old (including amateur ones that claim to be “daily” but really aren’t and others that are based in downtown Seattle). Click on the Sitemeter or Quantcast graphics below to see our LIVEstats (keep in mind that statistics vary with each independent measuring company, something that’s not in our control, and part of the risk of being transparent):

Click to learn more about our Pledge to the TAO of Journalism.

“Transparent” of course means that, at any time, YOU the Reader can click on one of these statistics links in the footer of the website (at the bottom of any page), and see what kind of traffic we’re getting right then and there from totally independent, external sources. Ever see any other website do that? Neither have we…

We strongly believe there is no more room in the media world for self-produced, fabricated circulation numbers. We’d also like to remind any potential Advertisers out there to shop around and ask for actual, independent proof of website traffic statistics from other sites before buying, because you deserve honesty and professionalism.

Our philosophy for gaining Readers, though simple, is very effective:

EDITOR’S NOTE: Janet Grella, the “Sales Diva” for our network of local blogs, has announced her retirement from advertising after nearly 40 years in the biz! This announcement took us all by surprise, and followed on the heels of another even more-shocking announcement made earlier this summer:

“I have an aneurism of my aortic arch and I need open heart surgery.”

Over the past three years Janet has conducted exit and entrance interviews with clients and businesses. We felt it only fair to conduct one with our “Diva.”

PLEASE PRAY/SEND HEALING THOUGHTS:
Before we get into Janet’s life story, we’d like to first kindly ask all our Readers to please take a moment to say a prayer for her, send positive thoughts or meditate – your choice! Even if you’re a cynic, an atheist or are just a plain meanie, please take a minute to look at Janet’s picture and send some kind of loving, positive message to her, envisioning her fully healed and healthy, and perhaps even repeating her name. THANKS!

Janet started her career in advertising on October 2, 1971 – her 22nd birthday – at the Fort Wayne Newspapers in Indiana. She was the ‘dummy,’ or the person who implemented the newspaper layout. She went on to work at several advertising agencies in Fort Wayne. Her responsibilities included general office, media buying and selling. She also wrote radio and TV commercials and won several awards for her radio voiceovers, as well as an Addy Award for a TV commercial.

In the late 70s she moved to Detroit, where she worked in advertising as a media buyer, media planner and media supervisor. A move to Chicago in 1982 found Janet working as Media Director of Creative Field’s, Marshall Field’s Department Store’s in-house agency. In a period of several years she held several positions including Advertising Director. When the department store chain was sold in 1990 she moved to Advertising/Promotion Director of WMAQ-TV, NBC’s owned and operated station in Chicago.

Janet waves during an Independence Day Parade in Burien.

A marriage and move to California found Janet working with a local magazine as Sales Director and then for a division of Tribune Company as a consultant. She kept the consultancy for several years, even with a move to Burien. She jumped to the other side of advertising when she began selling ads for the Robinsons’ Highline Times. She was the sales manager and stayed with them for seven years. She took an early retirement in 2009 to travel and study Italian. Retirement lasted 10 months. Then she bumped into Scott Schaefer at The B-Town Blog tent at the Burien Farmers Market.

A few hours later, Janet left the tent as the new Sales Diva!

“I credit Janet with a great deal of our success and growth within our communities. She is a seasoned advertising executive and we were lucky to be associated with her these past three years,” said Schaefer. “I am confident she’ll come through this health scare with flying colors, and I can’t wait to give her a big, non-aortic arch damaging hug at her get well party!”

“Why retire?” we asked Janet.

“This will be my second open heart surgery to repair my aorta. The recovery period is up to four months. It is particularly gruesome the first month or so, as I recall. I knew I couldn’t work for the blogs with any consistency. You know how devoted I am to the blogs and to my clients. Unless I can give 110% effort, I’m not happy. Plus we hope to travel to Italy when I’m recovered, which would further keep me from working. So it just seemed like time.”

"The arotic arch is a very bad place to have an aneurism," - Dr. Joseph Teply. (BTW, that's NOT Janet's heart...that's a model!)

Janet has had one meeting with her surgeon, Joseph Teply of Swedish Heart Institute. She and her husband Michael really liked his no nonsense, tell it like it is attitude. She recalls him saying something to the effect of “I’m not going to sugarcoat it, the arch is a very bad place to have an aneurism.”

“Having an aneurism repaired is an elective surgery. You can have it, or it can break and kill you. No one lives through a burst aneurism. I am told that there is up to a 5% chance of stroke or death during the surgery,” Janet told us.

Janet has not had her pre-op meeting with her surgeon yet, so she does not know all the details of it, but here’s what she does know:

She’ll be admitted to the Swedish Heart Institute on Monday, Sept. 12th.

Surgery will be performed on Wednesday, Sept. 14th.

During surgery, she will be on a heart-lung machine and her body will be cooled to 40 degrees Farenheit. The brain requires much less oxygen when the body is cooled.

The surgery is expected to take five hours. Basically a Dacron piece will be attached at either end of the aneurism.

According to Dr. Teply, she can expect one day in ICU and a total of five days in the hospital.

Janet’s good friends Sylvia and Bob Harris are having a mass said in Janet’s honor on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church in White Center at 8:30 a.m. (located at 9622 20th Ave SW in White Center; 206-767-6220)

In Janet’s own words about the life-changing news:

Almost a year ago my husband Michael and I decided that we’d spend October-December 2011 in Italy. It would be our fourth and longest trip over our 20 year marriage. During the past year we strategized, discussed, searched, dreamed and booked our “appartmentos” all over Italy; most specifically Rapallo in the North (thanks to local friends), Lecce in the heel of the boot and Roma our favorite city. We were going to stay in the very trendy and non-touristi area of Monti, above the Coliseum. Thanks to an old college friend and his wife, we were starting our journey in Barcelona in their condo near the main market in Barcelona. “Il perfetto viaggio”, as I say in my very broken italiano. (A perfect trip)

I wept the entire time I was canceling apartments, flights and dreams.

I have been with The B-town Blog and its sister blogs from almost the beginning. This of course includes The Waterland Blog which I like to take credit in encouraging editor/publisher Scott Schaefer in starting due to my long-time association with the Des Moines community from my former job. While working as Sales Diva for the blogs, I met many wonderful people whose associations I value. I therefore wanted all my customers and friends to know of our fabulous trip, and the fact that I would not be working the last three and a half months of 2011 with Scott and group. Here’s the self-fulling prophecy that I told everyone:

Janet proudly shows off some of the features of The Waterland Blog at a fundraiser party.

“My husband Michael and I are going to Italy for three months the end of this year unless one of us gets sick or dies.”

I was still telling everyone that when I got a call from my new health care provider, Margaret Larson, A.R.N.P. here in Burien. “You’ve got what looks like a goiter on your thyroid and we have scheduled a CT Scan at HMC for Friday.” This of course was discovered in a routine chest x-ray that is standard operating procedure at Larson Family Medicine. Michael and I showed up as requested. The tech told me that the order said “mass in upper chest.” I’ve had experience with “mass in chest” before.

That was in October 1990. That mass turned out to be a really big (baseball sized) aortic aneurism that was repaired with a new aortic valve later in 1990 in my then-hometown of Chicago. It was Michael and my plan to get married as soon as we could after the surgery. Four months to the day we said our “I Dos” in front of lots of friends and family in my new hometown of Palm Springs.

Early Monday morning on July 25, I heard the words that turned my life/our lives upside down again:

“You have an aortic aneurism in the arch of your aorta. It’s 9.8 cm long and 4.5 cm wide.” That’s about 4 long inches by 2 inches wide.

It seems like forever since I heard those words. As I mentally and emotionally prepare for the big day, I want to give a few shout outs to some of my peeps.

From the business side:

First of all to Scott Schaefer, the brains behind the blogs. Thanks for giving an old gal a chance to prove she still has it!

Secondly my clients – thanks for believing in me and the power of community websites!

Personal side:

To my husband Michael who’s been by my bedside through thick and thin since 1990–You’re a great caregiver. And fun at parties as well!

My family and extended family. Sister Chris lending support for mother Garrott back in Indiana. Michael’s sister Gerry and daughter Alice visiting before the surgery and his daughter Rachel coming up to support dad during the surgery.

My wonderful ‘friends’ network, from Indiana to Detroit to Chicago, Palm Springs and Seattle. Everyone is making a particularly tough time easier…..and alot more fun!

My medical team of Margaret Larson for identifying the problem, Dr. Curtis Burnett my cardiologist and Dr. Joe Teply whose qualified hands I’m placing my life in!

It’s the start of a new month, which means that, before we dive headfirst into summer, it’s time to take a look back at June 2011, reflect and share our thanks:

Ah, the sweet sweet rain of ‘June Gloom.’

Cold breezes! (especially at the Burien Farmers Market!)

And, according to Google Analytics, 61,182 Unique Visitors and 117,771 Pageviews of The B-Town Blog for the month of June!

That’s a year-to-year growth of +24.33% in Visitors and +37.84% in Pageviews over our May-June 2010 stats!

Click image to see larger version.

We’re proud of our success here at The B-Town Blog, because we’ve worked very hard to continually serve the Community we live, work, shop and spend in by updating our website daily with professionally-produced, award-winning local Journalism.

And recently, we were honored to be named ‘Best Hyperlocal Website‘ in the entire northwest (covering a 5-state area) by the Society of Professional Journalists.

We are Burien’s original “Local Blog,” in business since Dec. 5, 2007, and run by actual, experienced Journalists, award-winning Writers and Professional Photographers.

And we’d like to point a few things out to our Readers, as well as businesses considering Advertising:

We are (far as we know) the only local website in the entire country that is absolutely transparent in its website traffic statistics – something you will NOT see on any other competing “local” websites, both new and old (including ones that claim to be “daily” but really aren’t). Click on the Sitemeter or Quantcast graphics below to see our LIVE stats (keep in mind that statistics vary with each independent measuring company, something that’s not in our control, and part of the risk of being transparent):

Click to learn more about our Pledge to the TAO of Journalism.

“Transparent” of course means that, at any time, YOU the Reader can click on one of at least three statistics links in the footer of the website (at the bottom of any page), and see what kind of traffic we’re getting right then and there from totally independent, external sources. Ever see any other website do that? Neither have we…

We strongly believe there is no more room in the media world for self-produced, fabricated circulation numbers. We’d also like to remind any potential Advertisers out there to shop around and ask for actual, independent proof of website traffic statistics from other sites before buying, because you deserve honesty.

Our philosophy for gaining Readers, though simple, is very effective:

Dear B-Town Blog,

I went for my usual walk around my neighborhood today and saw that a “cleaning” company had strewn about their company advertising. They put rocks inside a plastic bag with their advertising and tossed it into driveways, sidewalks, and onto the street. (A cleaning company! How ironic is that?) They didn’t even have the courtesy of putting it on a porch or on the door handle. I’m so annoyed.

We try to keep our neighborhoods free of trash in Burien and we don’t need a company from BELLEVUE, no less, adding to the litter. My neighborhood is Salmon Creek. You can see it all for yourself if you take a quick stroll, they plastered the place. I’d love for them to have a little bad press about their bad advertising practice. They should be ashamed!

Sincerely,
Sherry

According to Sitemeter, a widely-used, independent website tracking service, during October 2010, we had 75,397 Unique Visitors and nearly 128,000 Pageviews; according to Google Analytics, we received 83,605 Uniques and over 138,000 Pageviews– both record highs for us!

Sitemeter’s stats indicate a +43.6% increase in traffic over September, our previous record month (with 52,496 Readers); Google Analytics shows a +31.38% increase.

Here are the most recent stats from Sitemeter:

We’re proud of our success here, because we work hard to serve the Community we live, work, shop and play in.

The B-Town Blog is (far as we know) the only local news website that is absolutely transparent in its website traffic statistics – something you will NOT see on any other competing “local” websites (we use quotation marks because ones produced in downtown Seattle aren’t truly “local” now, are they?).

“Transparent” of course means that, at any time, YOU can click on one of at least three statistics links in the footer of the website (at the bottom of any page), and see what kind of traffic we’re getting right then and there from totally independent, external sources.

We’d also like to remind any potential Advertisers out there to shop around and ask for actual, independent proof of website traffic numbers from other sites before buying, because our philosophy, though simple, is very effective:

If you are one of over 1,000 businesses in Burien, you’ll be receiving a very special invitation via snail-mail and e-mail in the next few days. That invitation will be to join the Discover Burien Association (DB).

You must have heard of those guys? They’re the fine folks that have created all the events we have come to enjoy and expect in Burien. Events like the Farmers Market, the Father’s Day Car Show, Boo in Burien, the Art walks and more.

But Discover Burien is much more than events. They are a non-profit corporation working on economic development, business recruitment & retention, education, promotion and marketing of the Burien community. DB’s got an Executive Director, Steve Gilbert and is run by an executive committee of 12 elected members from the Discover Burien membership roster.

And speaking of marketing, the folks at DB have been busy working on creative and cost effective ways to attract customers into our city and your business. As a member you can enjoy compelling ways to market your business. Consider group advertising potentials that are targeted, focused and on point:

Seeing your business promoted on the back of a bus with nine other advertisers moving back and forth 24/7 between Burien and West Seattle

Sharing group commercials with three other advertisers running 60-80 times in a month

Sharing a group page in the Highline Times six times a year with special group rates

As a member, you and your business will also enjoy a 10% discount on ad rates on The B-Town Blog. BTB is Burien’s #1 news and information outlet, with nearly 50,000 unique visitors per month. You can also enjoy a 20% discount off the Highline Times open display advertising rate, or a 10% discount on the Best of Burien quarterly coupon book.

Members will also receive:

Discount on a Highline Athletic Club membership

No Fee IRA from Cox Financial

Web Site Presence and Links on Discover Burien website

Free black and white ad in quarterly coupon books

Access to Inventory of Banners for Sales and events

Restaurant sampling at Burien Farmers Market

Access of monthly DB newsletter to promote your business specials and events

Besides these marketing benefits, DB likes to party, with bi-monthly afterhours get-togethers at local Burien businesses. They also like to inform with morning seminars that you’ll find pertinent to growing and retaining your customer base. DB calls these events “Networking & Educational Programming.” You’ll call it fun and informative.

Discover Burien has just celebrated it’s eighth year in serving the Burien business community. Their members are an eclectic mix of individuals and businesses that want to see Burien thrive. In addition to actively working in the business community, they also work as a liaison between businesses and city hall to streamline issues.

BTB Advertiser Ventana Construction wants our Readers to know that it’s offering a free “Building a Better Home Workshop” dealing with energy tax credits and lead paint removal beginning at 6pm this Wednesday night, April 14th.

The 1.5-hour remodeling workshop will be held at their West Seattle office, which is at 5458 California Ave SW. It’s held in conjunction with Goforth-Gill Architects, and will cover a broad range of information for those considering a project for their home.

Call 206-932-3009 to reserve a seat if you are interested in attending.

Here’s more info from Ventana:

Lead Paint Deadline Looms

2010 is shaping up to be a busy year for remodeling. Many homeowners who held off on projects for the last year or two are now ready to move forward with their plans. There’s extra incentive to do energy-efficient improvements this year because of a $1500 federal tax credit that will expire at the end of 2010.

All this remodeling activity may be complicated, however, by a new EPA regulation on handling lead paint in pre-1978 homes. The new rules go into effect next week on April 22nd, and require that remodelers who work on projects as small as bathroom remodels and minor siding and window replacement be certified to safely remove lead paint and be registered with the EPA.

Ventana Construction (www.ventanabuilds.com) is one of a very short list of Seattle companies currently registered with the EPA and trained to legally do remodeling and renovation on pre-1978 homes with lead paint. Homeowners planning remodels in 2010 should expect to receive an EPA lead paint pamphlet from the contractor and see an added level of protection when demolition is performed in or outside their home.

Ventana Construction is an award-winning, full-service custom home and remodeling contractor. We are a family-owned business specializing in whole-house remodels and additions, with a focus on seamlessly blending the new areas with the existing home. We also do total facelifts on kitchens, baths and basements and build spectacular outdoor gathering places and garages.

We are members of the Better Business Bureau, the Master Builder’s Association, the National Association of Home Builders and the Built Green program. We are donors to local non-profits and schools, and particularly to Westside Baby, which provides essentials to children in the Seattle area.

Ventana Construction also offers a monthly workshop in our West Seattle office about the remodeling process. The Building a Better Home Workshop is held in conjunction with Goforth-Gill Architects and covers a broad range of information for those considering a project for their home. We also talk in detail about the energy tax credits and the new lead paint rules. Our next workshop is April 14 at 6pm. Call to reserve a seat if you are interested.

We are proud to support local news coverage in Burien through the B-Town Blog. Call 206-932-3009 to talk with us about what you have in mind for your home in 2010.

March 2010 was a record-setting month for The B-Town Blog, with over 51,000+ Unique Visitors and 102,000+ Page Views, and like we did in 2009 (November, October, September and August, July, etc.), we’d like to shout out a huge THANK YOU to all our beloved Readers and Advertisers for the following statistics:

51,459 Unique Visitors – an average of 1,660 per day!

102,816 Page Views – an average of over 3,316 per day!

That translates to an overall traffic increase of +23% growth for Unique Visitors and +30% growth for Page Views over February!

Not bad, considering that Burien’s post-annexation “new” population is just over 46,000.

Here are the most recent stats from Sitemeter, a widely-used, independent website that tracks internet traffic:

We’re proud of our success here, because we work hard to serve our Community.

The B-Town Blog is also one of the few (if any) websites we know of that is absolutely transparent in its website traffic statistics – something you will NOT see on any other competing “local” websites (we use quotation marks because ones produced in downtown Seattle aren’t truly “local” now, are they?).

“Transparent” of course means that, at any time, YOU can click on one of at least three statistics links in the footer of the website (at the bottom of any page), and see what kind of traffic we’re getting right then and there from external, independent sources.

We’d also like to remind any potential Advertisers out there to shop around and ask for proof of website traffic numbers from other sites before buying, because our philosophy, though simple, is very effective:

LOTS OF LOCAL EYEBALLS
+
GOOD ADS
+
BLOGVERTORIAL STORIES
=
CUSTOMERS!

Click on a logo below to see our stats (keep in mind that statistics vary with each independent measuring company, something that’s not in our control):

And remember, we are here to serve our community, since we all live, work, shop, eat and drink here.

We are active members of Discover Burien as well as the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce, and you’ll see us at various events, the upcoming weekly Farmers Markets, festivals, city council meetings and much more.

Welcome back BTB Advertiser Burien Honda, which is having a birthday party and inviting everyone to come on in to check out the special green tag savings hanging from the rear view mirrors of all their cars.

They’ve been around Burien for 47 years and counting. In 1963, owner Jack Enderson opened a Honda Cycle dealership on SW 153rd and First Ave South, where “Mr. Auto” used to be (now Horizon Pets). He eventually added Triumph, BSA and Harley bikes to his inventory. In 1972, they needed more room and moved to their current location at 15026 First Avenue South.

This original 1970 N600 Honda has just 628 miles on it; its MSRP new was just $1,995!

In addition to an international reputation for its high mileage, Honda is leading the automotive industry in the Green and Hybrid Movement in automotive efficiencies. “Green” cars include the FIT Hatchback, Civic Sedan and “Hybrids” include Civic, Insight and Accord. They also have all of Honda’s conventional models. On the horizon is the FCX Clarity – a hydrogen and electric car available right now in California – and the CRV Diesel SUV sold in Europe and Japan.

Right now you can enjoy great 47 Anniversary savings on all Honda’s in stock! So stop on by and start enjoying your new Honda today.

Here’s a flashback pic of Burien Honda, circa 1972 – they’ve come a long way!:
