Last Tuesday, a double-wide trailer burned nearly to the ground behind Sylvester Middle School here in Burien. The family that lived there basically lost everything (including the family pet) but the clothes on their backs, and had no insurance.

They are a family of five – Hal and Deana Buckley, and their three children – a nine-year old daughter who attends Gregory Heights Elementary School, a two-year old and a six-month old.

The story goes that on Tuesday, Deana took the two babies and went to pick up their daughter at school at about 2:30pm. When she returned home, the house was totally engulfed in flames.

Hal returned at about 3:20 just in time to see the fire department trying to put out the fire. No one was home and they have no idea how it started.

This family needs our help.

The Red Cross has helped them with three days of support, but they are in dire need of cash, gift cards, furniture, a cheap place to live…everything.

I spoke with Deana Buckley on the phone Saturday morning and she’s very grateful for the help they’ve received so far. She mentioned that they need two sets of bunk beds now, and also asks that anyone who wants to help try to either go to Sunday’s fundraiser (11am-4pm at Thi Salon), buy cookies from their daughter or donate cash or gift cards (ie: Target, Fred Meyer, etc.), as they have enough clothes for now. They need to get back on their feet and find a place to live, as they’re now staying with friends in Renton.

Here’s how you can help out this weekend:

Sunday (3/9) from 11am – 4pm at Thi Salon Services (in Big 5/Big Lots Complex @ 125 SW 148th St Burien (241-9984) an all-day fundraiser for the Buckley Family. Salon owner Thi will be donating all proceeds to the family from all salon services, so go get your hair done, a manicure, pedicure, your back waxed, scalp massaged or whatever other services they offer. Rumor has it also that Thi will stay “until the last person leaves” and will donate all monies collected directly to the family. There’s also a Fundraising Jar (see photo at left) where you can just donate cash. There will also be food available (hot dogs, etc.) donated by the local Safeway across the street.

Sunday (3/9) from 2-4pm at the Burien Safeway (on 148th near First Ave South, conveniently located just across the street from Thi Salon), daughter Morgan will be selling Girl Scout Cookies near the front door (she lost all of her cookies in the fire but is out selling again – way to go Morgan!). So go show off your new ‘do to her and buy a bunch of cookies!

Eventually we’ll set up a PayPal donation button on the site that will deposit funds directly into a Buckley Family bank account, but until then, to donate cash you can contact Lynda Isernio at Sterling Bank at 243-6869 for more information.

For additional information on how you can help this family call Kathy Vallade 243-9595 or Gregory Heights School at 433-2323.

The Kiwanis plan to rebuild, but this will take some time.

If you have any ideas on other ways to help (perhaps hold your own fundraiser?), please don’t hesitate to email Scott at the B-Town Blog. We’re here to do whatever we can to help as well.

Further info will be coming soon, so stay tuned to the B-Town Blog for exclusive information.

In the meantime, if you’d like to donate, look at the right sidebar of this page and you’ll see what appears to be a new “Ad,” but is actually a call to action for all our faithful and generous B-Town Blog Readers to donate to the American Red Cross’ “Burien Apartment Fire Fund.”

All donations will go directly to the victims of last weekend’s tragic fire that killed three, injured six and left dozens homeless.

Latest news developments:

On Monday, the King County Sheriff’s Office declared that the fire that destroyed the eight-unit Tara Apartments and heavily damaged the identical Jenny Marie Apartments in the 400 block of Southwest 155th Street was arson. Investigators aren’t releasing what specifically led them to conclude it was arson, said sheriff’s spokesman John Urquhart.

The fire is being investigated by King County Fire Investigators and the Major Crimes Unit of the Sheriff’s Office.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible. Anyone with information about the arson should call the Sheriff’s Office immediately at (206) 296-3311.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the fire caused about $1.75 million in damage. But for many of those left homeless, the fire consumed belongings that will be difficult to calculate in dollar amounts.

If you’re interested in helping out (either with donations to the upcoming auction event or your assistance in helping get the word out), please email us ASAP.

This Thursday, Jan. 6th, King County Prosecutor (and area resident) Dan Satterberg will be the guest of the Burien/White Center Rotary Club at their monthly meeting at Angelo’s Restaurant, located at 601 SW 153rd in Burien.

Satterberg is scheduled to speak about science, specifically “the many ways in which forensic evidence leads to the finding of truth in the courtroom in King County,” according to an email.

The event starts at Noon.

Here are the details:

WHAT: King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg speaks at the Burien/White Center Rotary Club meeting.

WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 6th at Noon.

WHERE: Angelo’s Italian Restaurant, located at 601 SW 153rd in Burien.

COST: We believe there is a fee, but it includes lunch. Call Angelo’s for details: (206) 244-3555.

INFO: For more information, contact Dan Donohoe at the King County Prosecutor’s Office: (206) 296-9029.

Here’s Satterberg’s bio:

King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg, 50, was elected King County Prosecuting Attorney in November 2007 to succeed his longtime friend and mentor, the late Norm Maleng.

Dan served as Chief of Staff for Norm Maleng for 17 years, and was responsible for the management and operation of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, including budget, human resources, technology, legislative and policy matters. The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office employs more than 210 attorneys, 230 staff, and has a budget of over $55 million.

Before 1990, Dan was a trial attorney in the Criminal Division, where he spent rotations in the Special Assault Unit, Drug Unit, and served as the office’s first gang prosecutor in 1988.

Dan was born and raised in South King County and attended Highline High School. His father was a lawyer in White Center and his mother was a nursing instructor at Highline Community College. He graduated from the UW undergraduate school (Political Science and Journalism) and the UW Law School, where he met his wife Linda, a corporate lawyer.

They live in Normandy Park with their two children, ages 18 and 14. Dan’s hobbies include his rock band, “The Approximations” where he plays bass and sings, hiking, running, and traveling with his family.

Presentation by King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg: CSI: King County: “How prosecutors use forensic science tools to find the truth and convict the guilty.”

On January 6th, 2011, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg would like to share some good news with the members of the Burien/White Center Rotary. Prosecutors use many types of evidence to prove their cases in court. Often times the most powerful evidence comes from science. Join Dan as he discusses the many ways in which forensic evidence leads to the finding of truth in the courtroom in King County.

Dan will be speaking at Angelo’s Italian Restaurant in Burien at 12:00pm on January 6th. Angelo’s is located at 601 SW 153rd Street, Burien.

As they have been doing for several years now, local Boy Scout Troop #375 will be recycling Christmas trees the weekend of Jan. 7th and 8th, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Herr Backyard Garden Center, located at 1st Ave South and SW 160th in Burien.

It’s just $5 to donate your tree(s), which get recycled.

“This is one of two major fundraisers we do every year,” said Scoutmaster Mark Ufkes last year. “Along with our annual dinner at St. Francis, the money raised today will go towards scholarships for camps for scouts. And people should know that a kid can be a Boy Scout without having to pay much money.”

Troop #375 serves boys in areas including Des Moines, Normandy Park, Burien, White Center and West Seattle. For more information, check out their website here.

We here at The B-Town Blog highly recommend that all Readers recycle your tree with these kids, because everything stays local, from the donations, which fund scout activities, to the firewood (which will be sold to raise funds) to the mulch made from the tree chippings (which will end up in a local yard).

The 50% parking discount is for parking at the Terminal Direct level of the airport parking garage will allow Seahawk fans to “Score a Touchdown With Terminal Direct” and take Link Light Rail downtown. This extends the promotion offered season long for Seahawk home games at Qwest Field.

“Terminal Direct parking at Sea-Tac Airport offers the most convenient access to the airport terminal and quick connection to Link Light Rail,” said the Port in a press release. “You’ll park on the 4th floor of the airport garage, an easy walk to the pedestrian bridge leading to the SeaTac/Airport station.”

For Saturday’s playoff game, customers parking in Terminal Direct will enjoy a $2 per hour rate, 50% off the regular rate. The discount period begins at 11 a.m., two and a half hours before game time, and you get the chance to see the Seahawks without the hassle of downtown parking. Discounted parking is available for up to eight hours and will automatically be credited at the special rate when you exit the airport parking garage. A minimum stay of 3 hours is required and you must park in Terminal Direct.

The airport’s Terminal Direct parking is a perfect way to make the connection to Link Light Rail and stay out of the traffic hassles on game days.

Fans riding Link to the game can skip any post-game ticket lines by purchasing a round trip ticket ahead of time or by using an ORCA card from any ticket vending machine before boarding. The round trip fare from SeaTac/Airport station on Link Light Rail to the Stadium station is $5.

Elizabeth Weldin, of the Toxics Cleanup Program with the Washington State Department of Ecology, will be speaking about the “Tacoma plume,” from the ASARCO plant in Tacoma.

“For almost 100 years, the Asarco Company operated a copper smelter in Tacoma. Air pollution from the smelter settled on the surface soil over more than 1,000 square miles of the Puget Sound basin. Arsenic, lead, and other heavy metals are still in the soil as a result of this pollution.”

Learn how this affects you. How safe are we? Who is at risk? How does this impact the sustainability of Burien? Can I grow my own food? Can my kids play outside in the dirt? What businesses might be impacted? Land value? What steps can we make to mitigate the presence of arsenic and create a healthy and resilient community?

Here are the details:

WHAT: Sustainable Burien’s monthly meeting.

BTB Advertiser Burien Press will be hosting “Process Paintings,” a new art exhibit featuring oil paintings by local artist Garreth Schuh, which will open with a reception this Saturday, Jan. 8th at 6pm.

Everyone is invited to join Mr. Schuh and members of the community as they raise their coffee cups and toast a new year full of exciting arts events in Burien.

Burien Press is located at 423 SW 152nd Ave in downtown Burien, just across the street from city hall and the main library.

According to the good folks at Burien Press:

Garreth Schuh grew up in a rural area south of Seattle where he spent a lot of time with his grandparents who farmed, made things by hand and lived a rich, but frugal life. Mr. Schuh’s grandmother introduced him to oil painting and the “matter-of-fact” portrayal of her subjects stayed with him as he matured. Garreth Schuh studied art and architecture through college and he obtained a Master’s Degree in the mid-1980s in Philadelphia. He built a career around a parallel focus on creating art and architecture and though he left that rural life behind, he has always felt the pull of the lessons of his childhood and a connection to his grandparents’ generation.

In the early 1990s Garreth Schuh became disabled which dramatically changed every aspect of his life. He has been fortunate to be able to rebuild my life around the limitations of a wheelchair, and now finds that the inspiration for making art, and living life in general, is an effort to stay connected to his grandparents and their generation’s resourceful way of life. Many of the paintings in the Process Paintings exhibit recall his childhood experiences with them, the things they taught, and landscapes, people or creatures from those years. Mr. Schuh’s disability profoundly limits his options to engage the world physically, but painting his memories of that robust rural life keeps him tangibly connected to his grandparents and gives my life balance.

Burien Press is locally-owned and operated and open seven days a week from 6am – 8pm.

In addition to hosting gallery-style art shows, the Burien Press also hosts a monthly Sing & Sketch event on the second Thursday of every month and supports the growing arts community in Burien.

For more information, check out their website here.

Burien resident Tom Nelligan will be channeling Elvis this Saturday (Jan. 8th) when he returns to the 14th annual Seattle Invitationals, the contest to find the area’s best amateur Elvis tribute artist.

The event will start at 7:45pm at Club Motor, which is located at 1950 First Ave South in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood.

Tom has lived in Burien for years and works as a painting contractor. But on the side, in his heart-of-hearts, he’s a hip-swivelin’, pelvis-shakin’ Elvis Tribute Artist!

He’ll be “leaving the (Burien) building” this Saturday night to perform at the Seattle Invitationals, hoping to take home the top prize by singing the crowd favorite “Big Hunk ‘O Love.”

Favorite Judge “Sweet Pea,” also a Burien resident, is a well-known Rockabilly Queen and International Rockabilly Socialite and is returning for her second year. Priscilla (Marlow Harris) is also a Burien native, attending Glacier High School back in the day when Elvis roamed the earth.

WHAT: 14th Annual The “Seattle Invitationals” contest to find Seattle’s Best Elvis Impersonator!

WHERE: Club Motor, located at 1950 1st Ave. South in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood.

WHEN: Starts at 7:45pm on Saturday, Jan. 8th, what would be Elvis’ 75th birthday.

WHY: Because this is the highest expression of Performance Art manifested with a pompadour. Plus, a LOCAL boy is going to compete!

TICKETS: Tickets are $12 and are available online here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/133761

by Rebecca Dare and Bill Opfermann

When a disaster hits, first responders will not be able to help everyone – you may not even be able to contact 911. You may be at work and not able to get home. In the critical first hour of an emergency, the people you will turn to for help are your neighbors. Have you talked with your neighbors about what you would do during a disaster?

We recently hosted a neighborhood disaster preparedness program called Map Your Neighborhood (MYN). We invited 33 households in our neighborhood. We created a neighborhood map in advance and numbered the houses 1-33. Fifteen neighbors came and we followed a video that led us through the steps. MYN also provides booklets with all the steps that we followed. The host on the video has you pause it at certain points so that the participants can fill out the information to create the neighborhood plan. We put together a contact list that included phone numbers, children’s names and pets. We also put together a Neighborhood Skills and Equipment Inventory. We chose one house to be a gathering spot after a disaster and a house designated as a care center for children and vulnerable adults. Though not part of the MYN program, another house was offered as a place to house pets if necessary.

Those that came really liked the program. We felt more connected as neighbors and had an empowered sense that we could help ourselves and each other in case of a disaster. We hope many neighborhoods, including those living in apartment buildings and condos, will find this interesting and useful enough to do it themselves.

Sustainable Burien’s January 9th meeting will be devoted to neighborhood disaster preparedness. We’ll have 4 or 5 speakers: Karen Ferreira from Regional Emergency Preparedness; Mechee Burnett, from SeaTac Police Department, will talk about CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training; someone from the Fire Department; a person experienced in cleanup and restoration after a disaster; a neighbor who went through the Northridge, CA. earthquake, and Bill and I will share our hands-on experience helping to create a prepared neighborhood.

Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) is a program designed to start your neighborhood conversation about disaster preparedness. The MYN program was developed by Dr. LuAn Johnson, of the Washington State University Emergency Management program , to help neighborhoods of 15-20 houses quickly and easily create a response plan for emergencies. Click here to view a video of Dr. Johnson that may be helpful.

The Map Your Neighborhood Program will help you:

Create a neighborhood contact list and identify those in your neighborhood who are elderly or need special assistance.

Create a neighborhood utilities map that shows the locations of natural gas and propane tanks in your neighborhood.

Identify the skills and equipment that each neighbor has to contribute during an emergency. Now you’ll know who has plumbing skills, who knows emergency medical care and who has a chainsaw or generator.

Learn the 9 Steps to Take Immediately After a Disaster. You’ll be able to protect your home and secure your neighborhood with this written checklist.

We hope you can come to the January 9, 2011 (Sunday) Sustainable Burien meeting at Burien Library at 2 p.m. to learn more about Map Your Neighborhood and other disaster preparedness information:

The second annual “No Pants! Light Rail Ride” is coming this Sunday, Jan. 9th, from 3pm – 6pm, sponsored by Emerald City Improv, which encourages link light rail riders to ‘drop trou’ and ride like nothing’s going on.

This public prank is open to everyone, and to participate, you simply just show up, pay your fare, get on board and take your pants off while riding Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail; just be sure to wear a non-revealing undergarment of some kind.

Most pantsless pranksters are gathering just before 3pm at Westlake Center in downtown Seattle, but we encourage our Readers to buck that trend by boarding either at the SeaTac or Tukwila stations sometime between 3pm – 6pm, and riding the other direction. We think this will allow for more surprising reactions from unsuspecting travelers, and after all, humorous reactions is what this entire prank is about.

We also encourage everyone to take photos and/or video (without being too obvious) and email them to us for posting after the event.

This is affiliated with the “No Pants Subway Ride,” which is a global event started by Improv Everywhere in New York in 2002.

We sent our crew out in 2010, and here’s a video we produced of the event (read our coverage of last year’s event here), starring the frequently-pantsless Bart Bryan along with numerous other whimsical locals:

Here are other videos from last year:

Here are the event details:

WHAT: Second annual No Pants! Link Light Rail Ride.

WHEN: Sunday, Jan. 9th from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.

WHERE: Most are meeting just before 3pm at Westlake Center in downtown Seattle, but that’s not a requirement; in fact, we discourage our Readers from starting there, as you will have to wait to board the trains, plus, you’ll be stuck with dozens, if not hundreds, of other “No Pants!” riders. If you board from the SeaTac or Tukwila stations, we think you’ll most certainly garner a stronger reaction from unsuspecting riders.

INFO: Created by Emerald City Improv, Luke Greenway

From their website:

** Invite your friends!! **

Emerald City is proud to announce that we will again be having a No Pants! Light Rail Ride, as part of Improv Everywhere’s 10th annual No Pants Subway Ride. Cities around the globe participate. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, January 9th.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

Willing to take pants off on light rail

Able to keep a straight face about it (or at least try really hard)

Wear non-offensive underwear

Pay your fare

Bring a small bag or backpack to put your pants in during the event.

WHERE TO MEET: MEET AT 4TH AVE AND PINE ST, across from Westlake Center, a little before 3pm.

After the event: right now we are planning to meet at Fox Sports Grill again this year to talk about all of our stories over a beer. It was a great time last year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may NOT wear any revealing or “skimpy” clothes. If deemed too revealing, we will ask that you put your pants back on. This includes thongs, jock straps, ass-less chaps, whitey-tighties that can be seen through etc. Please use common sense.

The kick-off for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Highline will be Thursday, Jan. 13th, from 7pm – 8pm at Mt Rainier High School’s theater, located at 22450 19th Ave South in Des Moines.

The event will provide information about Relay For Life and how volunteers can get involved in the fight against cancer.

In 2010, the Relay For Life of Highline saw over 400 people from the cities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park and SeaTac participating on 31 teams, and raising over $64,000 (we’re proud to have been sponsors for the last two years) – read our coverage here.

Founded 25 years ago by Tacoma physician Dr. Gordy Klatt, Relay For Life has grown to be the most recognized fundraising event for cancer nationwide, held in more than 5,000 communities and raising more than $3 billion toward cancer research, advocacy, education and patient services.

Relay For Life is a family-oriented event in which teams will walk or run in shifts around the track for 12 to 24 hours. Participants traditionally camp out on the field, and, when they are not taking their turn walking, enjoy a variety of entertainment & activities. The 2011 version will be sponsored by BTB Advertiser Normandy Park Senior Living.

The Relay For Life of Highline will be held on the weekend of June 11th and 12th at Mt. Rainier High School in Des Moines.

Local football fans are invited to gather and cheer the Seattle Seahawks on as they head out of town to face the Chicago Bears in the NFL Playoffs this Friday, Jan. 14th starting at 1pm.

While the rally may not be as huge a moment in local sports lore as the now-legendary Marshawn Lynch 67-yard run in last week’s game that resulted in a minor earthquake at Qwest Field, it should, at the very least, send tremors into the spirits of our suddenly hot local sports team.

At 1pm, people are encouraged to gather at Valley Ridge Park (S. 188th) in SeaTac to enjoy free coffee, donuts, flags, rally towels, etc. provided by the team. Then, at 1:45pm, team buses will drive by on their way to the airport to head to Chicago, and fans are encouraged to send them off with a huge display of support.

Maybe we’ll cause another minor tremor?

According to the Seahawks blog:

The 12th MAN will be sending the Seahawks off in style with a multi-location rally on Friday afternoon.

Seahawks fans are invited to help send off the team to Chicago from five points along the bus route to SeaTac Airport on Friday afternoon. Key locations will be overpasses in Renton, Tukwila and Sea-Tac. Fans will be given various Seahawks items (12th MAN Flags, rally cards, rally towels, etc.) to wave to the team buses and various passersby to show their 12th MAN spirit. The Sea Gals, Blitz and Blue Thunder will join the fans at the five locations.

The team will depart Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton at 1:30 p.m., so organizers are asking fans to be at the following locations starting at 1 p.m. and before 1:30 to prepare for the caravan of buses. The five locations are:

Pan Abode (near N. 44th St., Renton, WA, 98056)

NE 30th St. (Overpass, NE 30th St., Renton, WA, 98056)

Renton Ave. S. (Overpass, Renton Ave. S., Renton, WA, 98057)

Lind Ave SW (Overpass, Lind Ave. SW., Renton, WA, 98057)

Valley Ridge Park (4644 S. 188th St., SeaTac, WA, 98188)
