To enter our drawing (which will be held at the end of the fest on Sunday; winners will be announced on the B-Town Blog on Monday morning June 22nd) all you have to do is come by our booth, fill out an entry form and play a festive and fun game we like to call “Toss The Unread Newspaper With Outdated News Into The Recycling Bin!”

One Last Call For Donations For Three Tree Point Fireworks
The Three Tree Point 4th of July Fireworks Fund drive has a current balance of $17,100 (with a target of $21,000), so we’re tossing out one last pitch to ask for contributions from our BTB Readers.
So if you haven’t already, please make your donation now for Burien’s best barge-based, free fireworks show on a great beach – donate online now! You can donate any amount between $25 and $500, so please lend a hand.
The $21,000 budget covers the cost of the barge, fuel, tug, insurance, permits, fireworks and professionals to run the show, police protection for the area (which is being increased this year) and dumpster rental.
So if you’re interested in sponsoring the fireworks, or giving a donation, please click here – you can donate online or via snailmail. This is an amazing celebration of Americana in a great neighborhood!
Burien Launches Its Own Radio Station At 540 AM
The City of Burien now has its own radio station, but instead of broadcasting “Top 40 Cocktail Music” with DJ Mikey, or “EZ Red Tape Listenin’” with DJ HerHonor, they’re playing recorded information on city events and programs, emergency information and city-related public service announcements.
Kind of like what you see on the city’s TV channel (21) only without pictures.
You can listen to the broadcasts on one of those old-fangled radio thingys tuned to 540 AM…

National “Dump the Pump” Day Is Thursday, June 18th

Thursday, June 18th is National “Dump The Pump” day, an annual event sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association to raise awareness of the benefits of public transit.
Everyone is concerned about saving money and cutting down on expenses these days. And as local gas prices again begin to creep up to $3 a gallon, one of the easiest ways to keep more money in your wallet is to park your car at home and hop on public transportation.
Once again this year, the region’s transportation agencies are urging residents to ride a bus, train, boat, bike, take a walk, or share the ride this Thursday…

REVIEW: Summer Shows At The Burien Art Gallery
by Julia Wight
Here comes summer, along with the latest art show at the Burien Art Gallery. This time avant-garde meets heart warming watercolors and superb photos. In other words, here is something for everyone.
In the main gallery, it’s fun to watch people’s reaction to the work of sculptor Timea Tihanyi. One visitor asked me if they were remodeling. Timea has converted mundane objects that barely attract our attention into sewn soft cut felt sculptures that make us question what is art and hopefully start us thinking about how we perceive our environment…
Area Residents File Class Action Lawsuit Over 3rd Runway
Monday afternoon (June 15th) a class-action lawsuit was filed on behalf of area residents who are upset with Sea-Tac Airport’s third runway against the Port of Seattle, claiming that noise and vibrations from aircraft are over and above what the Port has promised.
The class action lawsuit claims that as the runway was being developed and built, planning documents stated that it was to “only be used as an alternate runway to reduce delays in bad weather.”
Lawyers from the firm Pfau Cochrain Vertetis Kosnoff, PLLC contend that the port mislead residents to believe that the statement in the documents would be followed. However, since the runway’s opening, the plaintiffs claim that the port is now using the third runway for both departures and arrivals, bad weather or not, and at all hours of the day…

BTB Reader Kathi Vallade sent us the photo above, which she took at Saturday’s Burien Town Square grand opening celebration; here’s what she had to say about it…
PHOTOS: Scenes From This Weekend’s Relay For Life

Over 1,000 Witness Burien Town Square Grand Opening
Saturday morning (June 13th) at 10am sharp, the Highline High School Pirates marching band kicked off the grand opening ceremonies by marching (and boisterously playing) down SW 152nd to the main podium at Burien’s new Town Square where numerous local and state dignitaries spoke to a crowd estimated by local police as “well over 1,000.”
Here’s a video segment we call “Whaddaya Think?” shot by your B-Town Blog video production crew of Mark Neuman and Bart Bryan:
The day’s celebration served as the culmination of over 12 years of the city’s planning for the $193 million “town square as the central focal point for the downtown core” as first approved in 1997, then developed and built beginning in 1999 until construction began in 2004 to Saturday’s festive ribbon cutting ceremony.
Temps were in the lower 70s with a slight hazy cloud cover that made for good lighting for the politicians, developers and library folk who spoke, including:
- Burien Mayor Joan McGilton
- King County Library Director Bill Ptacek
- Congressman Jim McDermott
- State Rep. (and Burien native) Dave Upthegrove
- Dan Rosenfeld of Urban Partners (another Burien son)
- King County Council Chair Dow Constantine
- City Councilmember Lucy Krakowiak
- Judge Richard Eadie
Free tours of the new Library building, Town Square condos and city hall were provided all day, and foot traffic was busy throughout. As children explored the new kids section of the library or bounced in the bouncy houses outside, parents enjoyed free refreshments and giveaways from local Burien businesses.
We’ll have more videos and photos soon, so be sure to come back to your most up-to-date local news source right here!
