About Dress for Success® Seattle:
YWCA Dress for Success® Seattle promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Dress for Success Seattle is part of the national Dress for Success network, which provides interview suits, confidence boosts and career development services to more than 45,000 women in over 79 cities each year.
Locally, DFSS and the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County have teamed up to bring these important services to women in need. Since March 2003, DFSS is housed at the YWCA building located in downtown Seattle at the corner of Fifth & Seneca.
Looking good means feeling good. And when you feel good about yourself, that confidence shines through to others…including prospective employers.
In addition to helping clients train for and find jobs through various employment programs, the YWCA also offers Clothing Services to help individuals get the right look for job interviews, office work and more.
We help women entering the workforce after years as stay-at-home-moms, women moving from welfare to work, domestic violence survivors forging new lives, homeless women working towards self-sufficiency and residents of emergency shelters.
Touching Lives:
Janet, age 48:
When Janet left an abusive marriage of 17 years to establish a new life for her and her children in Washington, she was scared, but ready to start building a new, safe life for herself and her family. But just as she began to regain her footing, unfortunate circumstances derailed her career, and she lost her home.
Undeterred, she attended and completed a computer training course offered by a women’s employment program. She was then referred to Dress For Success® Seattle where she received both a new interview outfit and the self-esteem boost that played a key role in finding and securing her new job. “It just filled me with the confidence I needed.”
She views her DFSS experience as a blessing to be shared, saying, “I’ve seen that there is a fine thread of human care and compassion…I want to carry that forward and share it with others. That is what success is.”
…Making a real difference

Burien City Manager Mike Martin Arrested For DUI
According to The Seattle Times, Burien City Manager Mike Martin was arrested for a DUI Sunday night (April 19th) after his vehicle left the road and struck a ceramic pot in a yard in the 12600 block of 14th Avenue South in Burien (Google street view below).
Apparently Martin was found outside his car, “leaning forward and swaying side to side,” according to King County Sheriff’s records. His breath allegedly smelled strongly of alcohol, his speech was slurred and he admitted to drinking a couple glasses of wine and two beers.
The article goes on to say that Martin refused to perform both field sobriety tests and Breathalyzer tests, and that he was arrested. Under Washington state law, refusing to take a breath test results in automatic suspension of a driver’s license for at least one year. Martin may challenge the suspension or seek approval for an alcohol-ignition device on his car.
According to the Times, this isn’t Martin’s first run-in with the law – he apparently previously resigned as Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Kent after a 2005 hit-and-run incident.
Martin has been city manager since November 2006, and his yearly salary is $135,180.
We’re working on getting comments from both Martin and other city officials, but the Times goes on to quote Mayor Joan McGilton as saying that his arrest will be discussed at the next city council meeting on Monday night, April 28th, which we will cover.

Welcome Our Latest Advertiser: Dr. Jim Coleman, DDS!
The B-Town Blog offers a warm-smile welcome to our latest Advertiser, Dr. Jim Coleman, and his amazing team at Seahurst Dental Design.
At the office of Dr. Jim Coleman you will experience how pleasant modern dentistry can be! Their focus is always on your health, and your comfort is their first concern. Their passion is creating gorgeous, healthy smiles coupled with minimally invasive complete care.

Dr. Coleman takes the time to involve you in deciding what the right care is for you. The office has a fun, relaxing, non-judgmental atmosphere. How refreshing!
Dr. Coleman’s office is truly “state-of-the-art.” Remember the sound and feel of “the drill”? Well, Dr. Jim says: “In our office, we offer the gentle process known as air abrasion. This decay-removing process is virtually pain-free as I can control the speed of the spray of air/powder mix as well as the intensity. There is generally no need for shots with this technology. It’s also free of the noise vibration and smell associated with the old drill.”
Just imagine a filling done with no drilling and no shot!
Patient safety and comfort are always the top concerns for Dr. Coleman. They use digital x-rays, which reduce radiation exposure by 90 percent, the Diagnodent system to locate problems on average three to five years sooner, along with pictures so you can see your teeth, too. To help you relax, you can enjoy chair massagers, hot towels, aromatherapy and Tempur-Pedicâ„¢ chair pads.
Would you believe a same-day onlay or crown is possible?
One visit, no temporary, no “silly putty” impressions to gag on. Start to finish in a little over an hour. Dr. Coleman uses CEREC technology to design, fabricate and place all ceramic, metal free restorations in just one visit.
Sedation dentistry is wonderful for those whose fears or busy schedules have caused them to put off care. Can you believe, it is possible to achieve a healthy mouth often in only one visit! Millions of people have experienced this relaxing non-IV technique where, by taking a pill, “hours seem like minutes.”
For patients who want whiter teeth, they offer in-office power whitening (i.e. Zoom!), which achieve brighter smiles in just a couple of hours. Or, for the do-it-yourselfer, professional home whitening kits.
Jim Coleman, DDS, FWCMID, has more than 35 years’ experience providing smile makeovers along with comprehensive dental care. At Dr. Coleman’s office they provide all the expertise and services of the downtown Docs but with the hometown warmth and convenience.
Just head west from Olde Burien on SW 152nd; the office is on the right in a convenient location with plenty of free parking (see map below).

BREAKING: Three-Vehicle Injury Accident Blocks Ambaum

Photos and Story by Gina Bourdage
About 4:30pm Tuesday, a three vehicle injury accident occurred on the corner of Ambaum Boulevard and SW 130th Street blocking all through traffic.
Involved was a early 2000′s white pickup truck, a professional roofing truck (Diamond Roofing) and a newer black sedan.
Burien police were on the scene to detour traffic. The fire department was called in to clean up chemicals leaking from both the pickup and the professional roofing vehicle.
Police said they will investigate the cause of the collision and that one man (the driver of the white pickup) was taken to the hospital for injuries.
The cause appears to be high rate of speed and a illegal turn, however officials were not able to confirm.

Man Arrested In White Center For “Gutting” Church’s Cat
From our sister site The White Center Blog comes this horrific story that sounds like it’s straight out of a Stephen King novel:
When writing fiction, oftentimes writers resort to having to depict a bad guy as being “really bad” by showing him hurting an animal; this is often referred to as the “kicking the dog” scene, and it’s intended to make audiences hate the antagonist.
However, in this true story, the bad guy is so bad that we won’t have to resort to writing that scene – he already lived it out, and is now paying for it:
King County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 47-year old man in White Center Sunday on animal cruelty charges after he allegedly severely injured a church’s cat with a box cutter knife.
The incident occurred at Cross Church, located at 1320 SW 102nd in White Center…

Watch Women Play In Their Underwear Wed. 4/22 In Tukwila

For all you (ahem) hardcore football fans out there, this Wednesday, April 22nd will be a big day in South King County – because the northwest’s own Lingerie Football League team the Seattle Mist is holding a free, open-to-the-public (spellcheck alert on that last word!) “Mini-Camp.”
No, the term “Mini” in this case is related not to skirt length, nor trendy cars – it’s an actual “football” camp where women play (as in football silly) in their underwear from 11am-1pm at Tukwila’s Starfire Sports Complex, located at 14800 Starfire Way (map below).
The two-hour session is open to the public and admission is free, and here are the details…
BREAKING: Annexation Heading Toward Aug. 18th Vote

The city of Burien announced Tuesday (4/21) that its proposed annexation of the southern part of North Highline will be heading toward a vote of residents this summer, after receiving final approval from the Boundary Review Board last Thursday, April 16th.
The proposed election day for the vote is Tuesday, August 18th, so if you live in the affected area (the yellow “Area X” in the map above), be sure to mark your calendars – this will be your chance to help decide whether Burien annexes your community and becomes your new overlord.
Or not.
A simple majority is all that’s needed for this to pass, and if approved, the annexation will take effect in early 2010.
For more information, or to determine if you live in the proposed annexation area, visit the City of Burien website at www.burienwa.gov/annexation, or call 206-241-4647.

Residents Plan To Sue Port Of Seattle Over 3rd Runway

Over 150 area residents turned out Sunday to hear lawyers discuss an upcoming class action lawsuit against the Port of Seattle over the third runway.
by Jack Mayne
Big 757s taking off and landing right over your house can jar nerves and rattle lifestyles, yet a lot of people have to live that way every day – and many are ready to fight on in court.
“I can’t sleep at night,†said one person at a meeting Sunday afternoon at the SeaTac Community Center. “It got better for a while, but then they opened the new runway and now I can’t hear people in the room,†said another person, “or what is on TV.†Still another said people had moved from his rental properties and others said the value of their property, already hammered by the faltering economy, have gone lower because of the November opening of the runway….
