Burien Redwood Plaza

As I was driving by the shopping plaza on the south side of 148th Ave SW I spied this sign, “Burien Redwood Plaza.” I scoured the parking lot looking to identify a nearby Redwood. No redwoods in sight.

I decided to investigate.

I fired off this email to the Burien government:

I am assuming there must be a story behind (this sign) because to my knowledge we do not live in the redwood forest.

This it the reply I received:

Years ago, the property was originally developed by investors living in California. I’m not completely sure, but my guess is that’s why ‘Redwood’ was used. Over the years, the name stuck.

There you have it folks. Any more theories on the Redwood Plaza name? And what do you think, should we keep the name “redwood” for a non-redwood neighborhood?
